GenEral Manager NOTES GREG COLOMBO, CCM [GENERAL MANAGER]

Based upon the weather this year, I am not sure if spring has sprung or we have simply sprung a leak. With record rainfall in June, I am cautiously optimistic that July will give us improved and more consistent weather the rest of the summer for you and your family to enjoy at Cattail. Despite the sometimes less than ideal weather conditions, I hope that you have been able to see some of the changes and additions that we made so far this year. We added lighting that is both decorative and improves safety at the Pool and Lower Patio. The soft seating furniture at tennis and on the Lower Patio has been a hit for those who have

match. The conversion of the fire pit on the Lower Patio from wood to propane is almost complete, which will allow you to enjoy the furniture and fire much more often. Chris Harriman and his crew replaced the walkway from the Pool parking lot to the clubhouse, as well as the entrance into the lower level, with new pavers that are attractive and safer to walk on. Last month, I politely asked that the Members remember to be courteous to their fellow Members in their use of the Club’s amenities. I have received far too many complaints from Members regarding children remaining unsupervised and behaving inappropriately while at the Pool. The staff does their best to ensure the safety of everyone; however, they are not childcare or a substitute for the watchful eye of a parent. Children over the age of 13 are permitted to use the pool without a parent but, this does not afford them the opportunity to behave as they choose. The staff will be more diligent in enforcing the pool rules on a daily basis. If the rules are not followed, pool privileges may be suspended for constant or

repeat offenders who disregard them, behave in an unsafe manner and ultimately diminish the enjoyment of other Members at the Pool. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter. Thank you to everyone that took the time to fill out the tennis survey so that our tennis staff can better serve you and provide the programs and activities that are important to you. The survey also provided valuable feedback regarding the proposed tennis bubble project. We will be scheduling a follow-up Town Hall in August to discuss the results, construction costs, aesthetics, business plan and overall education of the tennis operation, as well as how it functions for non-tennis playing Members. There are no easy answers to many of the questions that you may have, so our goal is to have an open and transparent discussion about the process and what is in the best interest of the Club and its Members. See you at the Club!

S CHALLENGE JULY FITNESpu ll-ups! THe Dreaded John

SS]

R OF FITNE Foelber [DIRECTO

Performing a pull-up reflects overall upper body strength better than any other bodyweight exercise, and it shows above average muscular endurance when done for multiple repetitions. Not only does it show elevated strength and endurance, but usually is a good reflection of overall body composition (a leaner person will be able to perform more pull-ups). While a pull-up is a simple exercise, (grabbing on to something overhead and pulling yourself up) there are two variations to be aware of. Because the ceiling of the Fitness Center is too low, we will be performing these pull-ups on a modified bar on the cable cross machine. A traditional pull-up is done with an overhand grip with a shoulder width or wider grip. (A) A chin-up is performed with an underhand or neutral grip. (B)

Holidays are a time of celebration and joy with dear friends and family. If your family is like mine, it is circled around hearty meals, fine wine, and laughter. The talk, taste, smell, and preparation of food gets us salivating even before it touches our lips. Finally, once the food hits the table, we dive in filling every inch of our plate. Unfortunately, what comes next is a stuffed belly, lethargy (maybe nap time), guilt, and regret. This holiday weekend I encourage you to practice eating mindfully and free yourself from guilt. Mindful eating is about allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food preparation and consumption by eating intuitively.

As we make our way into July, summertime temperatures are here, but along with them have come significant rains. Two years ago at this time, we were 6 inches behind in rainfall and were utilizing the irrigation system to its full extent. The past two years, however, we continue to get hit with thunderstorms and our total rainfall for the year is well above normal. Ricky’s Tip:

‘Burn the Target’ for ultimate accuracy RICKY

SERRANO [DIRECTOR of golf instruction] The image of burning a target and the sheer intensity of narrowing your focus should give you a good idea of what I mean by reducing your margin of error. When choosing a distinctive and specific target, you not only plan a definite strategy for the shot that you’re about to play, but also subconsciously instruct your brain to achieve the desired outcome. If you define your target specifically enough with your eyes, the brain will go to great lengths in order to provide the end result that you want. If you have no clear goal for the direction of the ball, you have little hope for a positive outcome.

How To Ensure a Speedy Recovery! Matt Hill [Assistant Golf Professional]

Towards the end of the summer, there is usually a lack of turf coverage on our Driving Range tee. Heavy play removes divots faster than the turf can recover; and hot, dry summer conditions leave little opportunity for seedling establishment or regenerative growth of surrounding turf. So what can be done? The solution resides with golfers. Since randomly scattering divots can quickly destroy a practice range tee, the better approach is to shrink one’s divots by removing them in a pattern just like the professionals. More specifically, this includes placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. This can easily be repeated for up to 15 shots resulting in much less turf being removed. Whether or not you play like a pro, you can certainly practice like one. The linear divot method is recommended because it minimizes turf loss and leaves a strip of turf between linear divots causing faster turf recovery. Implementing this simple divot pattern into your practice regime works for all turfgrass species and will have significant season-long benefits at our facility.

After all, it is a great workout—and people are warming up to the challenge of battling it out “mano-y-mano”. So, if you want to give singles a try, here are two weapons that will help you get off the court (with a win) a little quicker!

ANGLES IN THE OUTFIELD: Hit more angles. We frequently get locked into hitting right down the middle—which is a consistent, smart approach.

However, hitting some

shorter angles gets our opponent way off the court—which serves the duel purpose of keeping them running and opening up areas for the next shot. These may seem easier said than done, but these two little tips can make an immediate

& over and 40 & over league play they will find many similarities in the Combo League two-out-of-three set format with the third set super tiebreaker played in lieu of a full third set. Combo league play is a bit different in a few

respects, however. For instance, instead of the typical two singles courts and three doubles courts per match, combo league play is comprised of solely three doubles courts per match. Another unique aspect of combo league play is that there is a wider range of NTRP rating levels per team. For instance, on an 8.5 combo team, the NTRP rating levels will range from 3.5 to 5.0. Each doubles team would therefore have to be equal to or less than a “combined” rating of 8.5…and that is where the name comes from! Each doubles team must consist of two players with no greater than a 1.5 NTRP

Although this league does not advance to a sectional championship like the Spring USTA Leagues, it is still beneficial to join a team.

to the test without the fear or stress of blowing an important match and adversely affecting your rating! Combo play is also a great way to get exposure to higher levels of competition since the range of players is much greater than in the typical USTA League format. If you are looking to continue the fun of USTA League play into the fall season, look no further than the USTA Combo League!
