[MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR]

HAVE YOU MET JACOB IRONSIDE? As the new Food & Beverage Manager, I am extremely excited to be a part of Cattail Creek Country Club. Golf has always been a big part of my life. From playing in junior tournaments, to playing in high school and college, I have always had a passion for Clubs and being around golf. At Johnson & Wales University in North Miami, Florida, I studied sports management with a golf course concentration. During my time in Florida, I worked at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort, the Westin Diplomat, and Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club. At Turnberry, I was able to help with the redesign of the golf course, which was one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever had. When I moved to Maryland, I landed a job selling Taylor Made Golf clubs and my love for golf continued. I was able to experience and learn so much from the company, including travel to the headquarters in San Diego to see how they manufacture clubs. This is an amazing opportunity for me and I want to bring my passion and excitement for the game of golf to the Dining Room. I look forward to meeting each and every Member this season.

RICKY’S TIP:

DON’T RESTRICT HIP TURN… RICKY SERRANO [Director of Golf Instruction]

There’s a school of thought that says “swing with minimal hip turn and maximum shoulder turn on your back swing.” I don’t subscribe to it, because if you don’t let your hip turn you won’t be able to make a full shoulder turn. If you can’t turn your shoulders, you can’t generate leverage.

NO Hip Turn Hip Turn

Thus, going back, I want you to allow your hips to turn as far around as they’ll go without forcing the right leg to straighten or collapse or your weight to move to the outside of your foot. Today’s golfers allow their hips to turn going back in response to the pull of the shoulder turn, not as a mindful or free act. In the 60’s, 70’s and even the 80’s the hips only begin to be turned by the shoulder windup after the club reaches about hip – high (one piece takeaway). Be sure to make the hips followers not leaders in your wind-up.

Over the past weekend, I was given the honor of being inducted into the African American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame, located in West Palm Beach Florida. Bobby’s best attribute is probably his ability to connect with all of our Members while interacting with all of our Members. He is willing to listen and talk to you about your match, strings, clothes, the weather…. You name it! He is the guy to talk to. On the one hand, we are sorry to see him leave- Bobby was a phenomenal employee, coworker and friend. On the other hand, we are excited for Bobby to pursue other career and academic aspirations.
