It truly is the most wonderful time of the year because it helps everyone remember what is really important in life: family, friends and spending time together. The decorations, gifts, meals and wine are all a lot of fun, but it is the memories created by the time spent together with your family at home and your extended family here at Cattail. Farewell, Justin Passero!
It is with bittersweet feelings that we pass along
news that Justin Passero, a beloved and long-term Cattail employee, will be leaving the Club to pursue the next step in his career. Justin began his Cattail career in April 2009 and has rotated through nearly every Clubhouse position including refreshment room attendant, bartender, and server, on his path to his current position as Dining Room Manager. He is known as a jack of all trades that can jump into any situation or position to get the job done. Probably his most important attribute is his ability to develop sincere relationships with his Restaurant staff, manager peers, and the Membership. Justin is the epitome of a loyal employee and demonstrated this best during the summer of 2013 when the Club was in between General Managers and Clubhouse Managers. He worked opening and closing shifts seven days a week as the only manager in the Clubhouse for over a month. At the same time, he maintained a smile on his face and a positive attitude to keep his staff’s morale up during a period of significant transition that occurred in our busiest months of the year.
Goodluck, Justin! We will miss you! CAT TALES 2014

Cattail gives back
The season of giving is upon us. With all of the holiday parties and shopping, it is easy to forget the importance of giving to others during the cold winter months. Cattail has made it easy to do good deeds this season:
Toys for Tots Bring an unwrapped toy when you visit the Restaurant. and place them under our ‘Giving Tree.’ The toys will be distributed to children in need around our area via the Marines’ annual program!
Socks for Seniors
Member Lesley Sedlack is involved with this wonderful organization that distributes socks, along with a warm smile, to seniors who are in assisted living, are homeless, or who do not have family and are alone at the holidays. Lesley has arranged for Cattail to be a drop-off spot for socks. http://www.socksforseniors.com
‘Hope for the Holidays’ Pet Food Drive
Lynn Slupski, Membership Director, belongs to the Maryland SPCA Urbanites, a group of young professionals who participate in incentives to help homeless pets at the shelter. The Urbanites are hosting small-scale pet food drives at their places of work this season to benefit the Kibble Connection, a partnership with Meals on Wheels that delivers homebound people their meals along with food for their pets. Cattail Members are invited to drop off small bags of dry food, canned food, or treats for dogs and cats, to Lynn’s office. CAT TALES 2014

What The Holidays Mean for Golf NIC FLICKINGER [FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
You often hear people state what the holidays mean to them. Although some answers overlap, it really does vary from one individual to the next. Being in the golf business, my job often requires me to work a lot of holidays. The month of December includes Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve and while the Golf Course remains relatively quiet with colder temperatures and snow, the Golf Shop remains quite active with shopping and sales. So for Cattail, here are what the holidays mean for GOLF:

HOW TO BEAT COLD WEATHER
ELI MIRELES [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
If you’re one of those golfers who is willing to venture outdoors when it’s cold and windy, here are a few tips for extending golf into the winter season. Before You Hit the Course: Of course any discussion about playing in cold weather has to mention apparel. The keys to dressing warm and staying dry? Layers and fabric. Here is a simple cheat-sheet even the most fashion-impaired can follow: ✔ When choosing socks, pick a pair that are a decent length. I prefer wearing compression socks — they’re great for keeping your calves warm and help with reducing lactic acid buildup in your legs the following day. ✔ Except when it’s mild out, I strongly advise wearing a base layer consisting of a compression shirt and pants. ✔ For shirts, any type of technical fabric that wicks is fine. Some golfers enjoy wearing shirts that sport a heavier weave in winter such as pima cotton or a poly-cotton blend. In terms of pants, you’ll need pair that are waterproof and windproof for lousy weather. ✔ Keep it simple with sweaters; stick to classic colors and silhouettes that can be worn on and off the course. Try a lightweight knitwear made from performance wool fabrics that don’t get in the way of your golf swing. A warm hat, a stick of lip balm to carry in your pocket and a solid pair of gloves are a must. Callaway sells one of the best pair of Cart Mitts that are easy to slip on and off between shots in frigid conditions. On sunny days, remember to wear sunglasses. Too many people still think that temperature affects the intensity of UV radiation when in fact it doesn’t. Exposure to the sun’s rays can be just as damaging in the winter as it is in the summer. GOLF SHOP NEWS:
Spring
Fashion
LAUREN BURNS [GOLF SHOP MERCHANDISER] In the golf industry, the majority of 2015 spring/summer orders are placed and in. So, I already know what the Professional Shop will be stocked with through June of 2015. Scheduling multiple brands to come in throughout the beginning of the season requires planning in regards to ship dates, color story, and size runs. You always want to make sure you have the right amount of sizes while not having the same colors from multiple brands in at the same time. The men’s line that I am most excited about is Peter Millar. They have three great colors stories featuring bright colors, think Jelly Belly candy canes, and are really going outside the box in terms of patterns and contrast trims. As always, they have another great lineup of cotton shorts colors (18 different colors) and performance shorts colors (12 different colors), and those are just the solids! They also came out with a new woven, which I have never seen before. This woven is a performance stretch woven made for mobility and comfort, easy care, and breathability. For the ladies, there will be one new company that we will be trying out, JoFit. JoFit was created by women and made just for women, so they know how to make you all look your best while still killing it on the golf course. The company has been around since 2006 and since I saw their line last year
at the PGA Show, I have been impressed. JoFit does run about a size big, so if you are usually a medium, be sure to take a small into the fitting room as well. JoFit will also be offered in the Tennis & Fitness Pro Shop, so ladies who golf and play tennis will be able to mix and match their outfits seamlessly! Another trend for the ladies that we will now offer in the Professional Shop will be golf dresses. I know the idea of wearing a dress out on the course seems ludicrous, but the few ladies I have seen do so at Cattail have come back with glowing reviews! Out of all the brands we offer, I have been most impressed with Nike’s dresses. They come with detachable knit shorts and are Dri-FIT to wick sweat away and help keep you dry and comfortable. I am looking forward to another great year and further developing concept of what you all like to purchase in the Professional Shop!
‘Wheel of Fun!’ Come to the Shop and discover your percentage off (10%-40%) by spinning the ‘Wheel of Fun!’ The promotion applies to everything in the Golf Pro Shop, and will be offered from December 9 - 21!

RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] Just because the winter is here, doesn’t mean that golf needs to end. The Indoor Learning Center is perfect for taking golf lessons and working on your swing so you can be ahead of the game come spring. Every sport has an off season and golf is no different. It doesn’t make sense to knock the rust off when it is already time to compete. You can continue to improve your game throughout the winter by using a variety of technology that we offer, such as V1 Golf video swing analysis system, and the Sam PutLab which is a system the measures and analyzes all movements in your putting stroke. We also have a FlightScope which is a 3D Dopler ball tracking golf radar. Take advantage of my reduced lesson certificates and fine tune your game in the comfort of our warm indoor Learning Center. 2014 Cattail Top Junior Achievements
TYLER CHAPLIN [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
On November 11th and 12th, I had the pleasure of attending a PGA Junior Golf Summit at the Country Club of Fairfax. I learned a lot about junior golf camps at other clubs in the area. We are going to implement many of their ideas to improve and progress our junior golf camps so they will be better than ever. I am so excited to get started next year and can’t wait until school is out so the fun can begin. Here at Cattail Creek we have some of the best juniors in the area. Here are a few junior achievements:
• Bennett Buch won the AJGA Tournament here at Cattail with a two
day score of 145 (74-71).
Junior Club Championship winners:
• Caleb Taylor placed second in his first MAPGA Junior golf
tournament at the University of MD golf course and represented

The movement of a tennis player to set up for the overhead is very similar to a quarterback in football dropping back in the pocket to throw. The swing and the ideal contact point of the racquet hitting the ball is like that of the quarterback winding up and throwing the football. Step 1. Turn sideways. Step 2. Side shuffle/karaoke step back to track down the ball. Step 3. During the shuffle/karaoke step, raise your non-racquet arm up and point your index finger to track the ball.
has completed 25 consecutive Boston Marathons.
Step 4. Place your racquet behind your head as if your racquet is a “back-scratcher.”
Details to know:
Step 5. Release your arm from the “back scratch” position up towards the ball.

For the overhead to be perfect, you need to complete the arm extension with your racquet arm. If the ball drops too low, the arm is not able to extend fully, and you run the risk of pushing the ball, which often results in an error. The wrist must remain flexible; this allows the necessary pronation, or “snap,” on top of the ball.
Why this Stroke is Important
This stroke is vital, especially for the frequent, aggressive net-rusher. If an opponent lobs once or twice and tastes a mouthful of ball fuzz from your overhead, they will think twice before lobbing again. If they do continue to lob, they will try to hit the “perfect lob,” which will often result in an error.
