Another great addition to the Club is our recently hired Fitness Director, John Foelber. For those Members who spend time in the Club’s Fitness Center, I am sure you have seen, and hopefully met John already. Both John and Bob Wampler have been offering complimentary golf swing and fitness assessments on the weekends in our new Learning Center, which will continue on Saturdays and Sundays through mid March. Many Members have already taken advantage of this great opportunity, and we hope to see you continue using the Range and the Indoor Learning Center. Please keep an eye out for weekly reminders and registration links for these assessments.
General Manager's Update Dear Member, As the weather begins to show signs that spring is just around the corner, everything is in place for another great year at the Club. For those who have not had the opportunity to meet Bob Wampler, our new Head Golf Professional, I strongly suggest you stop by the Golf Shop and say hello. Bob’s presence and immediate impact on the Golf Operation is already making a positive influence for the upcoming season. Bob’s first hire is our new Second Assistant Golf Professional, Tyson McFarland. Tyson is on board and working well with the golf team. Tyson previously worked at TPC Las Vegas, and is an accomplished collegiate golfer, setting many scoring records and winning several events in his youth. We’re all excited for March 15, when the Club will be reverting back to normal operating hours and the Clubhouse and Golf Operation will be open six days a week. On the tennis front, the excitement level is off the charts. Our two new Har Tru Tennis Courts will be completed and opened during the first week of April. We have added a new refreshment center outside the Fitness Center, which includes a new ice machine and chilled water dispenser. All the Tennis Courts were outfitted with new seating cabanas, and we have added a new scoreboard. The tennis shed was replaced this winter, and the landscaping around the Tennis Facility is also getting a facelift. In the next month, we expect the entire facility to be buzzing with activity. Finally, due to the hard work of the Tennis Committee, and Tennis Committee Chair, Christine Callahan in particular, we are opening a new Tennis Pro Shop in the Clubhouse, across from the Men’s Card Room where the Kid Zone previously resided. We expect the Shop to open in early April, and we will soon send information regarding the vendors we will be stocking (these vendors will be available immediately for special orders). The proceeds from the Tennis Classic Tournaments over the past two years were vitally important to the funding of the Shop construction process.
The staff is looking forward to seeing many Cattail Kids visit the Club in the coming months, especially by participating in one or more of our Summer Camps or Clinics, as well as the Crocs Swim Team. We aim to instill a love of Golf, Tennis, and Swimming amongst our Juniors, and we value teaching and coaching highly. Our staff has introduced several new programs for this season, and I encourage you to browse the website's Tennis, Golf, and Swimming pages (or check out the Sports Book when it arrives within the next two weeks). Registration for all of our spring and summer programs opens within the first week of March, so that you can start planning as soon as possible! We also offer many clinics for adults, both in tennis and golf. Information about these opportunities is also available by navigating through the appropriate sections on our website, and many are already open for registration. The Club’s Annual Meeting will take place on Monday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Clubhouse. During this meeting, the Executive Management team, along with the Officers of the Club will make presentations. This is a great opportunity to hear what has been planned for the 2013 season and to speak with some of the staff members. I hope to see you at the meeting, and I look forward to seeing you very soon at the Club. Sincerely,
Joe Fulco, CCM, CCE General Manager

RICKY'S NOTES: 2013 PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] Bob and I recently attended the 13th Annual PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit in Orlando, Florida, where over 600 PGA Members and apprentices come from all over the world to learn from the best in the business. The summit theme, "Where Communication Meets Excellence," focuses on the importance of coaching in today's highly competitive marketplace. The line-up of presenters included a wide range of experts in coaching, all of whom gave outstanding presentations. The summit featured 16 unique and renowned presenters over a two-day schedule. Here is a brief summary of some of my favorite presentations from the Summit.
Bobby Bowden - College Football Hall of Fame A great thought from Coach Bowden: “Your purpose comes from your heart." No matter what you do, everything comes from your heart. What goes in your eyes and ears directly effects the heart, so be careful of what and who you listen to and watch. Keep what goes through the eyes and ears good, and your heart will be good too.
Tim Kremer -“Peak Performance through Emotional Mastery and the Infinite Power of the Mind”
Dave Stockton, Sr. & Ron Stockton - “Secrets of the Short Game" The Stocktons theories to putting is very simple, he describes his approach to putting as a "signature approach." By this he means that your putting stroke should be like your signature. Let your mechanics come naturally, and focus on creating a nice rhythm for your stroke. You don't work to control your signature - you just let it flow through your hand. Every putt you make should feel like a natural motion that expresses your own style.
Tim’s presentation was my favorite, and well organized. For me, he stood out among all of the presentations because he presented an entirely unique perspective. His was a theory of game improvement that focused entirely on how our emotions impact our games, and even our reality. He believes that we need to look at our emotions as guiding our lives. ”Don’t use experience to shape your emotions – it’s your emotions that shape experience.” It was a fascinating theory, that brought light to the day filled with mechanical and technical suggestions. You can learn more about Tim's philosophy by visiting www.myspiritofgolf.com. This year's PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit was one of the best I've attended. I'm excited and ready for the upcoming season, and can't wait to share some of what I've learned from the best in our industry.

[FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
Well, it's the March edition of the newsletter.....the golf season is not too far away! Check out what's to come in the very, very near future. PGA Merchandise Show and New to The Golf Shop I had the good fortune to attend the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando with Bob over three days at the end of January. For those of you who have never been to the show, it is massive! We had the opportunity to meet with vendors, checking out new products, see what is hot in the industry, and meet with fellow PGA Professionals. It is a lot of work and lot of walking, but it is also a great time. Let me share with you some of the new items that you will be seeing in the Golf Shop in 2013. Stitch Golf Stitch is a company that puts a very modern feel to very classic styles of golf head covers, shoe bags, and other accessory items. They offer the finest in quality wool and leather products at affordable prices, operating out of one manufacturing warehouse. From stripes to plaids to lucky clovers to skulls and crossbones, they offer quite a variety of choices for you. Personalization and customization is at your fingertips: choose your set makeup and decide what you would like on it. The company also makes a great baseball leather, which is terrific for head covers or for a shoe bag. Arriving for the spring season, be sure to check them out! Under Armour You got it! New for 2013 in the Golf Shop will be Under Armour. The awesome product that you love is now available at Mill River prices. Sure to be a hit, the Golf Shop will showcase these items for both men and women. New to Under Armour is their new Coldblack technology. The product protects again harmful UV rays and reflects away IR rays; no matter what color you are wearing, whether it is white or black, you aren't going to feel hot in the fabric. Under Armour Golf offers a wide variety of shirts, pullovers, covers, bottoms, and more. Smathers & Branson As many of you already know, the Golf Shop began carrying Smathers & Branson belts last year. In addition to the wide variety of belts we carry (and can special order too!), there are going to be some new items this season. The Golf Shop is going to offer Cattail Creek logo belts, wallets, and coaster sets. If you love Smathers, then these items are a Cattail must for you!

Cattail Creek Women's Golf Association Spring Fling The CCWGA Spring Fling is set for Wednesday, March 20, and serves as the big kickoff to the CCWGA golf season. Whether you're a returning league member or new to the Club, it is a great way to meet and mingle with other Golf Members. Directors from the Tuesday 9 Hole Morning League, Wednesday Evening Twilight League, and Thursday Morning 18 Hole League will be present to provide more insight and let you know what is new and in-store for 2013. The Golf Professional Staff will also be there; we haven't seen a lot of you in a long time, so we are looking forward to catching up with you. In addition to all of this and much more, sales representatives from FootJoy, Polo, and Peter Millar will be on hand to showcase new products and take special orders. Come on out and enjoy an evening of fun and laughs with us! New Staff In addition to Eli Mireles (six-month intern) who I wrote about in the last newsletter, I am please to announce two more additions to the Golf Professional Staff in 2013. Please be sure to introduce yourself to both Wilson and Jordan this season! Wilson Henry - Wilson was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and started golfing when he was just three. Since then, he has had nothing but love for the game of golf. He attended Quaker Valley High School in Sewickley, and was a varsity letterman all four years in both golf and lacrosse. He now attends California University of Pennsylvania as a sophomore, majoring in Professional Golf Management. Wilson also participates in the PGM Student Society and the club golf team. Last year's freshman internship saw him at Allegheny Country Club. Jordan Tabor - Many of you have already had the pleasure of meeting Jordan. He has worked the past three years as a member of the Golf Outside Operations Staff at Cattail. During the transition periods between Head Golf Professionals, Jordan assisted myself and Ricky in the Golf Shop. In addition to working outside, he will be working the Golf Shop during the summer months as one of our staff. He has become a tremendous asset to the Golf Operations and is a hard-working and ambitious young man. As always, please let us know if there is anything that we can do to make your Cattail golf experience a memorable one!

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN
[GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
Winter is nearing its end and spring fever will soon be setting in. Our target date to open the regular Golf Course will be Thursday, March 14th. This opening will be a “soft” opening. As you have seen on the Blog this winter, we have gotten deep into improvements out on the Course and there are still a number of items pending that we want to get done before the season is in full swing. A soft opening means that normal daily tasks like mowing greens, changing cups and raking bunkers will only be done 1-2 times per week. As the season moves into April and the grass starts to take off, our regular season staff will come back and our focus will shift into manicuring our pristine Golf Course. As has been true in the past, March is our main cultural practice month. When we talk about accomplishing projects for March, modifying the turf and soil takes the bulk of that menu. In the coming weeks we will begin aerifying tees, verticutting and solid tine aerifying fairways and following both projects up with sand topdressing. On March 18th, we will be pulling ½ inch cores out of the greens and filling the holes with coarse sand. To follow
that up, on March 25th we will again be dryjecting sand into the greens to create even more opportunity for the bentgrass on the greens to live a healthy life this year. Along with these physical practices, we will be filling in the gaps from our soil tests with all the necessary nutrients. The bunker work and wall repair on #8 is now complete. The bunker now sits in close proximity to the green and fits into the existing green contour nicely. The Green Committee with advisement from Drew Rogers, Golf Course Architect, has now decided to convert the left bunker on #8 into a closely mown approach/ collection area. This improvement will balance out the green surround and reduce concentrated foot traffic while adding a few more interesting shot options to the hole. This is an exciting time for the Golf Course and there will be all kinds of important info firing through the Green Department Blog. All things considered, the weather this winter was relatively normal. It allowed us to get many different tasks accomplished on the Course and we are looking forward to an impressive season. See you out on the Course!
Yukon has not been excited about aerification ever since he figured out the plugs weren’t dog food. Unlike him though, you can be informed by reading the Blog about how great these cultural practices are for the Golf Course!
Almost 250 railroad ties have been removed and replaced this winter. That’s over 100,000 pounds of lumber!

REMEMBERING RESOLUTIONS Fitness Update JOHN FOELBER [FITNESS DIRECTOR] Spring is here! Well actually, it will be here officially on March 20. Most of us are looking forward to all of our favorite warm weather activities, such as golf, tennis, and sitting by the pool. While we look forward to these things, it is also a perfect time to look back at any new year’s resolutions that you made just two months ago, particularly fitness or health related ones. Are you still keeping them? If so, that’s great, but typically this is the time when our resolutions become a memory that maybe we’ll get around to revisiting next January 1. This doesn’t have to be the case! With spring almost here and the promise of warmer weather just around the corner, now is the time to reevaluate and recommit to your health and fitness goals. You can get started now by scheduling a personal training consultation with me in the reservation system on the website. This consultation will include time to talk about your fitness goals, health and exercise history, along with static and movement screenings. If you haven’t been by the Fitness Center for a while, a lot has changed. With the help of the Facilities Engineering crew (Rob, Sean, and Kemp) the Fitness Center’s layout has been changed to optimize space. We now have five treadmills, two ellipticals, a recumbent bike, and an octane trainer. There are also two brand new Life Fitness ellipticals set to arrive in mid-April.
Meet John... John Foelber, Fitness Director, is a Certified Personal Trainer and Golf Fitness Instructor (via Titleist Performance Institute). Schedule a session with John by clicking here, or contacting him directly. Fitness training is great for your health and strength, and it can be fun, too! Every personal training client is unique and has different needs and goals. Whether you are trying to improve your overall golf or tennis game, or just trying to live a healthy and pain free lifestyle, your exercise routine will be customized to help you reach and surpass your goals. All sessions are 60 minutes long. Individual Rates
Along with more open space and the added cardio equipment, this month we will be receiving new medicine balls, stability balls, resistance bands, foam rollers, and various other new equipment. I invite you to stop by the Fitness Center to try out the new equipment, and recommit to your fitness goals this spring!
$75/session 20 session package: $1,300

TIM'S TIP OF THE MONTH: RACKET FACE TIM HALTER [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] Contrary to popular belief, the direction in which you swing your racket does not determine the direction of the ball. So what does determine the direction of the ball? The racket face!
From these three examples, it should be clear that the racket face determines the direction of the ball, not the swing. Now how can you use this information in application? Simple. Stop thinking that the swing will make the ball go where you are aiming.
The idea that if you swing up the ball goes up and if you swing To master ball placement, begin thinking that the racket face is down the ball goes down is, in most players' minds, a rooted king. Even if you do not have the so-called perfect stroke (most truism. This seems logical, but in practice this is not true and is the do not, including the pros), if you can source of much miscalculation when attempting to solve stroke problems. "EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE practice adjusting the racket face, you will eventually find the shot. To add to the confusion, many coaches

If players want the ball to THE RACKET FACE, YOU WILL racket face. In your practices, experiment go crosscourt, they swing the racket EVENTUALLY FIND THE SHOT." with opening and closing the racket face to begin developing a feel. You can also in that direction. If players want the practice hitting the ball down the line or crosscourt by adjusting ball to go down the line, they swing the racket in that direction. the racket face and pointing it in the direction of the intended This instruction only instills a false "racket swing truism" in players' target. minds. Whether swinging up or down, the true secret to ball direction is control of the racket face. When attempting to adjust the racket face, do not change your Let's examine this concept a little closer, beginning with the slice groundstroke. A backhand or forehand slice groundstroke is hit with a downward swing of the racket. If that is true (and it is) how is it possible that the ball can be sliced and then go up over the net? The racket is swinging downward so the ball should go down, right? No. While the racket is swinging downward the face of the racket is open, pointed upward toward the sky. The downward swing merely puts spin on the ball. The open racket face determines the ball's direction. Racket face control is king in tennis!
grip. Keep the same grip, and adjust your wrist position instead. Moving your wrist automatically changes the face of the racket. When your racket face changes, so will the direction of your shot!
How about topspin? The premier topspin player of the day would have to be Rafael Nadal, with his buggy whip forehand swing over the wrong shoulder. Nadal's swing is dramatically upward. If the swing determines the ball direction, Nadal must be trying to land the ball on the moon because that is the direction his racket is moving! Yet as Nadal swings upward, the racket face is pointed forward, thus sparing any additional craters on the moon. How about when a pro returns a blasting serve? All he does is block the ball with no swing, and the ball goes in the direction he is aiming. There was no swing, just a bunt at the ball and off it goes to the desired target. The swing could not have determined the direction of the ball, because there wasn't one!
