This unseasonably warm weather has us dreaming of how beautoful the Course looked last Spring! We can’t wait for grenner grass and blooming flowers.

GENERAL MANAGER N O T E S

What a difference a year makes! As I am typing up this article, we had 95 golfers on the tee sheet on February 19 after having 89 golfers the day before. A year ago we still had remnants of the 36 inches that fell in late January. It is great to see Members using the Golf Course and Range in the “offseason”. A tip of the cap goes to our Golf Course Superintendent Chris Harriman for his ability to keep the regular Course open during these alleged winter months. It was a great recommendation on his part, and I know that our Members have appreciated it. Thank you again to everyone who participated in the Focus Groups with Rick Snellinger and the Chambers Group. Your feedback, comments and opinions are beyond valuable to the Board and Managers of Cattail to be able to give you the products and services you desire. We will soon be sending out a communication to the Membership with the results to keep you informed. The House Committee met in February and it was requested that the dress code in the dining areas be communicated to the Membership as a friendly reminder when you visit the Club. As a general rule, if you can wear it on the Golf Course, you are permitted to wear it in the dining areas. The Cattail Room is the only exception to this, which requires long pants for the gentlemen. Hats or caps

A N OT E F RO M YO U R M E M B E R S H I P D I R E C TO R . . . Dear Members, This time last year we were enjoying all the benefits of an early spring – golf and warm weather! I hope this March is just like last, as it certainly helps to start off the year right with regard to membership. I’m excited to launch our 2017 Referral Program (details right). You can expect a referral card in the mail in the next few days that makes it so easy to spread the word about Cattail. Simply pass these cards along to any friends, family, co-workers, colleagues, etc. that you think would be a good addition to the Cattail family. We’ll take it from there by answering prospective Member’s questions, giving a tour, or scheduling a time for them to try the Golf Course. I’m urging each and every Member to think of two people to pass their referral cards along to. I have faith that, with your help, we can make 2017 the best year for membership yet! Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you all around the Club soon.

THE GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

What happened to winter? Did we even have a winter? The answer is yes we had a winter and in fact, it is still here, despite abnormally high temperatures. We have seen plenty of warm air move in and out over the past two months and it has allowed a fair amount of people to come and enjoy the Golf Course, which has been great. Air temperature is much different than soil temperature however, and soil temp is what the turf cares about. Temperatures in the soil move very slowly, very similar to water temperature. On a 70 degree day in February, do you think it would be fun to go swimming in your unheated backyard pool? No. Water and soil temperatures are still averaging in the 40’s, especially 3-4 inches below the surface. We need a solid two week moving average around 50 degrees to really start seeing the turf wake up. The freeze and thaw has been minimal through the winter though and that will help speed up the wake up time this spring. It also allowed us to keep the greens and tees open all winter long. Ballmarks were repaired and divots were replaced. We will be doing as much as Mother Nature allows us to do with the turf over the next few weeks and by mid-April we will be playing on a spectacularly conditioned property.

As you have seen on the Blog this winter, we have gotten a variety of things done on and off the Course and there are still a number of things pending that we want to complete before the season is in full swing. We are in the middle of constructing four new “green” tees for the front nine that should be finished up shortly. We have a few odds and ends to tighten up including one more irrigation project on #4 and making sure our full irrigation system is operating properly. After that, cultural practices will be the focus. As has been true in the past, March is our main cultural practice month. When we talk about accomplishing projects for March, modifying the turf and soil takes the bulk of the activity. In the coming weeks we will begin aerating tees, verticutting and solid tine aerating fairways and following both projects up with sand topdressing. On Monday, March 13, we will be pulling ½ inch cores out of the greens and filling the holes with coarse sand, weather permitting. We will also be bringing back the Dryject sand injection process in conjunction with core aerating. The Dryject has been integral in helping keep our greens firm and draining properly throughout the season. Along with these physical practices, we will be filling in the gaps from our soil tests with all the necessary nutrients. This is an exciting time for the Golf Course and there will be all kinds of important info firing through the Green Department Blog. We don’t know what the warm winter means, but we are preparing for an early spring and another blazing hot summer! See you on the Course! Below: Have you seen the new walkway by the Tennis Courts? The Greens crew worked tirelessly to get it up just in time for March.

THE PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW RECAP! LEXIE DILORETO [GOLF SHOP MERCHANDISER]

The Golf Professional Staff has returned from the PGA merchandise show in sunny Florida! Fortunately enough, Cattail Creek Country Club is starting to see our fair share of warm luminous days just in time for the season to kickoff. The PGA Merchandise Show was a great success for the Golf Professional Staff! My days before the show were filled with various educational conferences and seminars as I spent four days at both the Merchandiser of the Year Conference and the Association of Golf Merchandisers: Retail Conference. The breakout sessions were filled with topics concerning best practices, managing an open to buy, tournament and corporate opportunities, visual merchandising, and customer service values. Meanwhile, Bob, Ricky, Tyler, and KJ spent some time at Demo Day checking out all the new technology for hard goods. Our time at the PGA Merchandise Show was spent meeting with all the brands we carry. As a team, we are making sure that the best merchandise offered is available for you in 2017. We also took time to browse in search of any new vendors that would be a hit inside and outside the Golf Shop. Throughout the off-season, we have been busy analyzing our current mix of vendors. We have decided to focus deeper on the brands that have proven to be successful at Cattail Creek, and minimize the brands that may not be producing positive results. This was a focus for us down in Florida- to think critically about the brands we currently carry, and if any new brands were a necessity in the shop. The Golf Professional Staff brings positive feedback and learning experiences from our time down in Orlando. 2017 is looking excellent inside the Golf Shop and out on the Course. Whether you are in need of a fresh outfit or a new golf club out on the green, Cattail Creek is here to help!

NEW YEAR, NEW GRIPS TYLER CHAPLIN [FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

This year, the new grip that I am most excited about is Golf Pride’s Multi Compound Cord with Align Technology. The MCC is one of the most popular grips on and off the tour, and they have made it even better. Using a rib in a grip is nothing new, but Golf Pride has made it with a much harder material and put it on the outside of the grip. When installed on a shaft, the red ridge rises and extends down the back of the grip to aid better hand alignment and more consistency, locking the hands in place every time. The MCC with align technology will be available this spring. There is no better time to change out your grips than during the off-season. We have plenty of grips in stock,

such as the Golf Pride Tour Velvet, Multi-Compound Cord and Tour Wrap, along with Winn Dri-Tac, Super Stroke putter grips, and more. If we don’t carry the exact grip you are looking for, we are happy to order it for you. Grips that are simply worn-out and slick will negatively impact your game and cost you strokes. Stop by the Golf Shop today and speak to one of the Golf Professionals. It would be our pleasure to evaluate the condition of your current grips, show you available replacement options, and install them for you.

Ricky’s Tip RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF GOLF INSTRUCTION]

I recently attended The PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit in Orlando, Florida, the PGA of America’s largest educational event. The PGA Teaching Summit attracts nearly 800 professional attendees throughout the United States, and this year attracted participants from a record 13 different countries. This year’s theme was “The Pursuit of Excellence” and featured an outstanding cast of the leading PGA and LPGA Professional instructors, as well as many other renowned performance experts. The segments they focused on were coaching juniors, the short game, body mechanics, and the future of technology. James Sieckman’s presentation on the short game was excellent. His philosophy is that the first step in building is laying a foundation. His foundation in the short game focuses on the smallest movement - bump and run or basic chip shots. Once you have mastered the shoulder controlled movements in the bump and run and basic chip, you’ll add the frame to the house, by incorporating some wrist action into the movement. The pattern is the same and the fundamentals are similar, but the motion gets a little longer. When the frame is ready, you can add a roof to the house by adding the motion of the arms to the motion even longer. He calls this the toss shot or the finesse shot. Dave Phillips who is the co-founder of The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). presented on the future

of technology. He was the first to use a drone as a part of his instruction program at TPI Academy in Oceanside, California to keep an eye on his juniors while they practice and play. He recently attended the Consumer Electronic Show (CES ) in Las Vegas where all the techs giants unveil their new products. One of his favorites was from Halo Sport, which premiered a new technology from fifteen years of academic research. “Neuro-priming” increases the excitability of motor neurons during athletic training to improve strength, skill, explosiveness, and endurance. This season I will be implementing a new coaching system for juniors and adults, and I’m guaranteeing results or your money back! I’m excited and ready to get this season started, and I can’t wait to help you achieve your golfing goals.

Defining Success Differently

season ends. However, the area we live in often gives us one day

CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL] This winter, I think we can all agree we have been incredibly lucky with regard to the weather. Of course, I probably am jinxing us all, and we will get another four day snow storm before the that is 30 degrees—cold, windy, stuck seeking tennis shelter at

can’t do it in a match”. To me, it sounds like the player isn’t even attempting their goals during a match. Let’s say, for example that you are working on a top spin forehand which requires you to fully follow through your shot. You go to your match and make every single forehand, but you are not following through and have zero topspin. This means that you did not succeed in your goals of hitting more topspin forehands. Instead, you retreated in to your comfort zone of just putting the ball in play. And most likely, you won the match and feel good about it. To truly improve in tennis, you must learn to define success in ways that may make you lose points or matches. I remember the first few times I started working on an aggressive second serve which requires a lot of racquet head speed and spin on

Moving from inside to outside can really mess with your timing and your tennis game. Inside the courts are faster, the ball skids, and there are no elements to worry about. Then we move outside, and the ball feels like it is moving two miles per hour, the sound is completely different, there’s sun, wind, etc. Even the backdrop can mess with your head—switching from the plain backdrop of an indoor facility to the grass, trees, and sky of an outdoor court can make it difficult to see. Here are three tips to combat the difficulties of switching back and forth from inside to outside. 1) When going from inside to outside, put a strong emphasis on taking the ball early. The ball will not come to you as it does when you play inside. Get up to the ball, quickly.

So when I started trying this new second serve, I would constantly double fault and give points away. A lot of times, I would want to go back to my “safe” serve, but I knew that it wouldn’t help me get better. So I had to learn to really define success by achieving my goals. And my goal was to learn a second serve, not to win matches or points. After two painful months of doubles faulting and not feeling comfortable, I had developed a great second serve that I could rely on to be aggressive. And to this day, it’s one of my most dependable weapons in my game. But the real lesson I learned, was to define success differently. As you approach your tennis season, if you have a goal in mind, remember to focus on the goal and not the short term

the essentials for outdoor tennis. Sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, water. When we’re inside, my lessons drink far less water than in outdoor season. When your body isn’t accustomed to the temperature, 75 degrees can make it seem like it’s 100. 3) In typical Maryland fashion, the 75 degree weather will go away, and the cold will set back in for a while, so we migrate back indoors. When this happens, the ball will feel like it is being shot out of a rocket to you. Focus on setting your racquet as early as possible. Lateness is the biggest enemy when moving back inside. 4) When going back inside, place a high importance on stretching. The cold can tighten up your muscles big time, especially if indoor facilities are being stingy with the heat. Get to your block early and spend some time stretching before heading on court.
