The Beer Is Flowing!

Matt Ault [DINING ROOM MANAGER]

As we head into the spring season, and warmer beer drinking weather, Jennifer, Claude, and I are very excited to announce our upgrade to a nitrogen system for all draft beer. Prior to this addition, the Clubhouse was utilizing 100% carbon dioxide for our draft beer. While this is certainly most common in the industry, it can lead to problems such as over-carbonation and over-pressurization in long beer lines - and thus, that sharp, prickly taste in your beer. Conversely, a nitrogen/carbon dioxide blend, leads to a creamier, smoother drinking beer – one to be enjoyed all day long. With this change we are happy to announce we have slightly changed the beers on tap. Currently our draft offerings include: • • • • • •

Membership Director Dear Members, A big thanks goes out to the 498 Members who completed our Membership satisfaction survey. We had a final response rate of 38.9%, which is high enough to be considered representative of the Membership as a whole. A lot of time went into preparing the questions in a way that would derive data that would be of value to the Club’s leadership in determining ‘what the Membership wants.’ The surveys were anonymous, and Snap Surveys, is currently compiling results reports for us over the next couple of weeks. We anticipate being able to communicate some initial data at the Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday, March 19 (please register online to attend).

Once the Board of Directors and Department Managers review the basic results, we will identify any areas and questions that might require deeper cross-analysis with each other, in order to gain more insight. We’ll keep you posted on this process! Graciously,

attail is proud to be the host golf course for the Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) organization’s annual charity golf tournament. BHGH’s mission includes nurturing low-income students to be successful in school, graduate college and be outstanding community citizens.

This past January, many Cattail Members joined forces with BHGH to donate their time and their respective businesses’ services and products for a ‘Not So Extreme Makeover’ at the Boys Hope House. The boys home, located in the East Rosemont neighborhood of Baltimore City, provides residential accommodations in a safe and supportive environment to boys from families whose income falls well below the poverty level, but who desire to break the seemingly continuous cycles of poverty. Volunteers and vendors from across Maryland donated their time, skills and supplies to overhaul the Boys Hope House. Contractors and builders replaced all bathrooms, the kitchen, all flooring, doors, and furniture; all items and labor were completely donated. A proud high-give goes out to the following Members who were involved in this important and special project: Mike Buch, Carl Buch, Mike McSally, Tim Carr, Tim Doyle, RL Gladden, Ron Lloyd, John Mikk, Harry Spector, and Kurt Zanelotti.

MARCH FITNESS CHALLENGE:

Help Us Get Back to Cattail! JOHN FOELBER [FITNESS DIRECTOR]

So far we have seen a lot of amazing individual accomplishments with our fitness challenges. We have seen 784 jump rope jumps in 5 minutes, a 7 minute 5 second plank and a 2 minute 19 second squat hold- just to name a few! This month we are going to change it up a little bit and work together as a team. The driving distance from Naples, Florida to Cattail Creek Country Club is approximately 1089 miles. Together as a team will we will try to cover that distance by the end of the month using these methods… • Distance from a cardio machine (bike, elliptical, treadmill, AMT machine) • Distance from running or walking • Daily steps over 5,000 using a pedometer (5,000 steps is an average day for most) We will start our journey in Florida and work our way back to Maryland. The Club needs everyone’s help to get all the way back home to Cattail, we don’t want to come up short and end up in Richmond or Washington, DC. Check out the Cattail Facebook page, weekly update, Fitness Center bulletin board and my blog for updates. As the weather starts to break this month let’s look forward to our outdoor spring activities mainly golf and tennis at the end of the month; last year it was 63 degrees on March 31.

It is hard to believe in tw o shor to try and be t weeks we will be ve nturing out gin Spring A eration!

T

echnically, winter is nearing its end and we know spring fever will soon be setting in. As of right now we cannot set a specific date as to when the regular season Course will open but we are shooting for mid-March. As the sun moves higher and higher each day, the soil temperatures will surely come up so that the grass can start to grow for 2015. This opening will be a “soft” opening, meaning normal daily tasks like mowing greens, changing cups and raking bunkers will only be done 1-2 times per week as we also look to finish off a few projects with the soil thawed. As the season moves into April, and the grass starts to take off, our regular season staff will come back online and our focus will shift into manicuring a pristine Course. We have gotten a variety of tasks completed on and off the Course this winter and there are still a number of things pending that we want to get done

before the season is in full-swing. Paving the cartpath for #10 tee, installing the new pump station, implementing cultural practices and of course, beginning the grow-in process at the new Short Game Area are all on the docket for March. March is our main cultural practice month. In the coming weeks we will begin aerating and verticutting tees, verticutting and solid tine aerating fairways and following both projects up with sand topdressing. Weather permitting on Monday, March 16, we will be pulling ½ inch cores out of the greens and filling the holes with coarse sand. We will also be bringing back the Dryject sand injection process this spring. The Dryject will be completed as early in March as the weather allows and will again help keep our greens firm and draining properly throughout the season. Along with these physical practices, we will be filling in the gaps from our soil tests with all the necessary nutrients.

Despite the severe cold and multiple snows this winter, most of the Short Game Area sod has rooted in securely. It will be very interesting to see how the new turf wakes up and readies itself for a lifetime of golfer interaction. Mowing will begin once the surfaces are smooth and the soil temperatures are around 50 degrees. Our stance on this grow-in is not just to get the area open as soon as possible, but to ensure a quality start for a facility that will likely be in place for the next 100 years. As it stands, our target opening will be the end of April. This is an exciting time for the Course and there will be all kinds of information firing through the Green Department Blog. Even with the bitter cold and record snowfall, we were still able to get many different things accomplished on and off the Course and we are looking forward to an impressive 2015. See you on the Course!

This was my second year of attending the PGA Magazine Merchandiser-of-the-Year Conference. This year it was at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida. At the conference, we had numerous breakout sessions each day with different topics, while also changing groups to allow us to hear a variety of opinions.

CCWGA

Opening Day Tuesday, April 7 | 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

As there are Head Professionals and Merchandisers from public, private, and resort courses attending the conference, it is a great opportunity to gain insight on how to approach merchandising from all angles. It is my favorite conference that I attend, as only the best of the best are invited, so the best of the best ideas come from it! I am excited to use what I learned from the conference to continue to improve the look, feel, service, and selection in the Golf Pro Shop. At the PGA Show, the guys get to browse new products and vendors, interview potential interns, attend PGA seminars, and

Vineyard Vines has released a golf specific line, with Jason Dufner as their first PGA spokesperson, that you will see this spring. We will also be bringing in a number of items from Columbia Sportswear, mainly their outerwear for this fall, but also an assortment from their Professional Fishing Gear (PFG) line. If you have the chance to visit the driving range on a practice day of a PGA Tour event or any major golf tournament, you will see several small boxes lined up either behind or parallel to the professionals as they hit balls. You will also see the player and/or their coach players checking out the data on an array of portable devices. Launch monitors and other technological advancements have taken the golf world by storm, and they have provided us with a deeper understanding of the golf swing and how the golf ball flies. From a playing perspective, a lesson with a PGA professional, who has access to this information and the ability and expertise to interpret it, will allow you to understand your ball flight and tendencies. The club and ball data provide the student and instructor with instant feedback, which allows for more efficient practice. The ability to easily identify weaknesses and flaws, allows the instructor to make the proper swing and/or equipment adjustments for you. Here at Cattail Creek, our Flightscope Launch Monitor measures 24 different variables relating to your swing, ball, and/ or club. Check them out below! During winter shutdown, I was able to visit my brother and sister-in-law in Corona Del Mar, CA. While in the area, I took the opportunity to visit Callaway’s headquarters in Carlsbad, CA. I recently became a Callaway staff member, switching over from Ping, and was able to be custom fit for my new equipment in their stateof-the-art Performance Center. My best results came with their new XR product line, which had a great look and feel, and gave me a noticeable increase in ball speed. After trying out a number of Odyssey putters, I decided on one of the new Odyssey ‘Works’ putters. Each putter face has a white hot insert covered with an ultra-thin stainless steel mesh, which produces a faster roll with less ‘skid.’ The Chrome Soft has a ‘Soft Fast’ core with a tour urethane cover and performs at a tour level for a fraction of the price; I suggest trying it this spring! In addition to Callaway, we are excited to have all of the latest and greatest in golf technology available at Mill River prices. Here are some of the hot new products to look for in 2015: TaylorMade

Bushnell Tour X Rangefinders

• R15 and Aeroburner woods

• Exchange Technology – When the red faceplate is used, Bushnell’s patented Slope Technology is engaged. When the black faceplate is used, the device becomes fully USGA conforming.

All of these new products, and more, will be available to try out during Demo Day Weekend on May 2-3; register using the online calendar! Saturday, May 2- TaylorMade/Adams, Titleist, Cobra. Sunday, May 3 - Callaway, Ping, Nike, Bettinardi, and Tour Exotics. Let’s Talk About Practice RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF GOLF INSTRUCTION]

the green, you can save yourself a lot of strokes and bring your handicap down quickly. Head over to the bunker to practice your bunker play for the next 10 minutes, making sure to be target oriented and treating each shot as if it is the real thing. Rather than hitting shot after shot quickly without thinking, make sure to go through your pre-shot routine so that you will be more prepared during an actual round of golf.

W

ith the new Short Game Area opening this spring, there are no excuses to not work on all areas of your game. I know that sometimes finding the time to put in to practice can be difficult, so we need to be efficient with our practice to get the most out of it. I have developed a great one hour golf practice plan that will improve your game. When you arrive at the practice facility, the first thing you should do is stretch for 5 minutes or until you are warm. Once you’re loosened up, start hitting short shots with your wedge and slowly work your way through

each club in your bag, hitting a few shots with each one until you reach your driver. This should take about 20-minutes. When hitting these shots you should treat them like real game situations on the Course. Choose a precise target for each shot and be disciplined with your pre-shot routine. Go to the Short Game Area and practice pitching for 15 minutes, hitting shots from all different distances and lies. The new Short Game Area is set up to simulate real on-course situations, which allows you to fine tune your chipping and pitching. If you are able to get the ball up and down more often around

The last 10 minutes should be spent on the putting green, as the name of the game is getting the ball in the hole! I suggest you practice putts from 15 feet, concentrating on your distance control, and end your session with some short putts. Try ending your practice session by knocking in five three-foot putts in a row, which will end your practice session on a positive note. One-Hour Practice Summary: • 5 minutes stretching to get warm. • 20 minutes on the range hitting each one of your clubs. • 15 minutes on the short game area working on chipping and pitching. • 10 minutes on bunker shots. • 10 minutes on putting. Remember to practice each practice shot as though it is the real shot on the Course!

toe) there is very little in the way of lateral support thus making running shoes dangerous for the dynamic movement required of tennis players.

The Perfect Tennis Shoe Bobby COZZILLIO [ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]

There are many components to what makes a successful tennis player. Most commonly we think about strokes, strategy and fitness when trying to gain an edge over our competition. One often overlooked aspect is tennis equipment. Racquets, strings, grips, shoes and even apparel play important roles in everyone’s tennis game. Tennis sneakers are uniquely designed for the rigors of tennis. Because of the stop and go nature of tennis movement, as well as the quick changes in direction, it is important that proper tennis footwear be worn. The stability and sole are two of the most important

characteristics that set tennis shoes apart from other sneakers. Stability: Because of the side to side nature of tennis movement, tennis shoes are built to provide the player a more “low to the ground” feel. Many players will note that their tennis shoes may have less of a cushioned ride than their running shoes. Tennis shoes typically sacrifice this “cushioned” feel to increase the lateral stability of the shoe. Although this may make the shoes feel a bit harder, it is critical to the player’s safety when making fast cuts on a tennis court. Because running shoes are made for straight forward running (heel to

Soles: The sole of the shoe is important not only for a player’s performance and safety, but also for the well-being of the court. A running sole or a “marking” sole can cause damage to both clay and hard courts. There are several different types of soles on tennis shoes, each of which provide advantages depending on which kind of court surface you are playing on. The two most common soles are for hard or clay (har-tru) courts. A sole made for hard courts will have a combination of both herringbone and nubs. Clay court soles are typically flatter and consist of a mostly herringbone pattern. Many other factors should play into your tennis shoe selection such as arch, weight and of course style! Your tennis professional can help you select the pair that is just right for you! If you are unsure what shoe is best for your playing needs, stop by the Cattail Pro Shop for the newest selection to try on a pair!
