bentgrass to recover before the Poa annua seeds drop off the plant. This timing greatly reduces our exposure to weed invasion on our greens, tees and fairways. The past few years have been amazing in that we have had well over 130 new golfing members join the club. This means that we have a fair number of people on the Course that are not so familiar with the cart rules at Cattail. The following are golf cart parameters set by the Green Department and Green Committee to help ensure your safety and the quality of the Golf Course. Cart traffic is now only restricted to the path on holes #5, #6 and all par 3’s. In order to create a safe and consistent experience, carts are not permitted in the rough and mounded areas. Focus cart traffic in the fairways. The small white and black posts indicate the last possible point as to where you should retreat back to the cart path. They do not call for a cart to drive right next to them and make a sharp turn towards the path. Most importantly, scatter your cart traffic.

You are

driving on a living plant. By scattering your traffic (not driving in a worn area) you are increasing the chances a

Here are a few steps to efficiently use the grass we have on the Driving Range. Since randomly scattering divots can quickly destroy a practice range tee, the better approach is to shrink one’s divots by removing them in a pattern just like the professionals. More specifically, this includes placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. This can easily be repeated resulting in much less turf damage. The linear divot method is recommended because it minimizes turf loss, and leaving a strip of turf between linear divots leads to faster turf recovery. Implementing this simple divot pattern into your practice regime works for all turf grass species and will have significant seasonlong benefits at your facility. Important Steps: STEP 1 Practice in a linear pattern by placing each new shot directly behind the previous divot. In a typical practice tee station setup, the linear divot method can easily be repeated for up to 15 shots or more, resulting in much less turf being removed with each successive swing. STEP 2

since we only have 4! So long as you stay in a safe area,

Leave a strip of turf between each line of divots. For the best results, at least four inches of live turf should be left between the linear divots, or just more than the width of the iron being used. The remaining strips of turf are of great importance because they serve a critical

parameters and also help communicate them to guests and other Members who may be concentrating more on how to make triple bogey than where to drive their cart. The Golf Course thanks you!

Concentrating divots in one area is arguably the worst practice method because it creates large voids requiring the most time for turf recovery. Scattering divots is a popular practice habit that is frequently taught because it does not create large voids in the turf, but it removes the most turf in total because a full divot is taken with every shot.

RICKY’S TIP Feel The Club Head Hitting a golf ball is not very different from driving a nail into a board; both involve the control of a swinging implement. Watch a carpenter as he swings his hammer so that the head acquires its maximum speed at the moment of impact with the nail. You can be perfectly sure that his mind is not cluttered up with thoughts of wrist cocking, pausing at the top of the swing, correct hand action, and the hundredand-one other individual motions that make up the complete action of driving a nail into a board. “If it were, the chances are that he would seldom, if ever, hit it at all. He has one thought in mind: Hitting the nail by swinging the head of the hammer in the most efficient manner possible. The rest takes care of itself.”~Earnest Jones Jim Furyk is one of my favorite golfers, although his swing is probably the strangest on the tour and breaks all the rules of textbook teaching. However, he is so successful and hits it pure. He is one of many golfers who have shown there’s no “right” way to swing the club. A proper golf swing depends not on speed, but on rhythm and gravity. This is what Furyk does so well; he always swings with a good tempo. Gravity is the most powerful force in the universe, and we as humans excel when we work with it, we see great results. Yet most everyone spend stheir golfing lives working against it. When Furyk goes onto his back swing, back and up, it wants to come down. That’s gravity at work; without it the club would float away along with you. Your job isn’t to pull the club down towards the ball- it already wants to go there. Your job is to guide it without any interruptions, without making it go faster than it wants to go.

for understanding the basic fundamentals? Is the student receptive to suggestions? Does the student unconsciously express trust issues? As coaches, we never stop looking for ways to communicate in the most effective and efficient way possible. It is common for the instructor, when asked “What did I do wrong?,” to say “I did not see what went wrong, swing again.” That can be very frustrating, mainly because of the student’s inability to duplicate swings! Thus, we have to become great observers. All of this imperative information is being collected within a half hour to an hour golf session. We do this, while concurrently formulating a road map that can lead the student toward his or her highest potential. The Tennis & Fitness Shop REVAMPED!

THREE TIPS TO WIN IN SINGLES CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PRO]

This season, I feel as though I have more and more Members anxious to get in the singles lineup on their USTA teams. I love it! As a result, I have been focusing my lessons on three important strategies to really excel on the singles court.

HIT CROSS-COURT This is a biggie. The safest play in singles is to hit the ball cross-court. Be wary of changing direction of the ball and going down the line—it is the higher part of the net, and a tougher shot to execute. By keeping the ball cross-court, you reduce your risk of mistakes. Not to say you should NEVER change direction of the ball, but make sure you are in a good, offensive position before uncorking that forehand winner down the line.

USE THE WHOLE COURT Oftentimes we end up playing very linearly.

We hit

very straight forward—even if we hit to our opponents forehand, then their backhand, our opponent does not often stray too far from the middle of the court. Use the drop shot or hit an angle—hit deep, then short—hit short, then deep—anything. Anything that can get our opponent out of their comfort zone.

KEEP THE BALL IN PLAY Over the last few weeks, I have been focusing on one very important, and often overlooked, strategy in tennis—keeping the ball in the court. Although it seems obvious and somewhat silly, it is the primary objective in tennis, right? If you keep the ball in the lines more times than the other person, you win—plain and simple.

Sometimes we strategize to the point where

we can cause more harm than good because we end up confusing ourselves.

The Cattail USTA Tennis Season is played in the spring. This means beautiful sunny days, flowers blooming, and people coming out of winter hibernation to enjoy some outdoor tennis…right? Unfortunately, if you have played any USTA matches this year, there is a good chance you have witnessed that “spring” weather this year has meant, cold, wet, dreary days. Given that playing in tough weather conditions is part of competing in tennis matches, it is a good idea to learn how best to prepare so you are ready for anything Mother Nature throws at you! When playing in colder temperatures, there are some tips that may seem obvious, but not everyone puts in to practice. 1. DRESS WARM - Although this should seem obvious,

layers you will feel much more comfortable once the match starts. 2. STRETCH – This is critical. It is very important to not run right out to your match without stretching or getting your muscles loose. This can lead to injury ,which could sideline you for weeks, effectively cutting your USTA Season very short! Take a few laps around the court, or stretch in the Fitness Center before you go on Court. Not only will this prevent injury, but you will be much more ready to compete when the match starts! 3. SHOT SELECTION – Certain shots are more effective in colder temperatures. Especially on damp clay courts certain shots are almost unreturnable. Keeping the ball low is a great way to use the climate and court conditions to your favor. Low, flat, slicing serves are very difficult to get under and return in these damp conditions.

Drop shots and sliced

groundstrokes are also a great weapon to use! These shots are doubly effective if your opponents have not
