Dinner – Clubhouse
Dear Members,

As the Board previously communicated to the Membership, I am leaving Cattail on Sunday, May 7 and have accepted the GM/COO position at Pine Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake,

good and not just a few days. It is a move made with many emotions, most of them mixed and with some uncertainty.
S U N D AY,
I have written and said many times, it is the people that make a Club special and unique. In my three and a half years at Cattail, I have developed some great relationships with both Members and Staff that I will never forget. I have been fortunate to work for and with some amazing

and inspirational people whose passion for Cattail is just exceptional. Cattail is fortunate to have some of the most dedicated Staff that I have had the pleasure to work with. All have been helpful in making Cattail the place that it is, but I would like to specifically recognize a few for their efforts who have helped make my job a little easier the last few years: Jennifer Turowski has shown tremendous growth and leadership abilities during my time here. I am very proud to see how she has progressed into a valued and respected leader at Cattail.

Her career in club management has no limits. Chris Harriman has taken the Golf Course and its conditions to new levels each and every year. He tackles every project with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude that is critical to the
Club’s success. He addresses every problem as an opportunity and is always focused on providing a premium golf experience for players of all levels and abilities. Gabby Forte has taken over the Membership and Marketing department with creative and outside-the-box thinking to help keep an active membership pipeline. She has helped create programs and procedures to help improve Member retention and make new Members feel welcome upon joining. Member retention is as critical as Member recruitment, and I appreciate how Gabby has diligently worked on this area. Chef Tom Caswell has embraced new methods and ideas in the culinary world with enthusiasm. He is constantly working to give Members delicious and creative dining options for both ala carte and private events. The Winter Wine Night this past March was some of the best food I have tasted, not just at Cattail, but anywhere I have worked previously. The Club is in good hands moving forward, and I would like to think that I am leaving Cattail at least a little bit better than when I arrived back in November 2013. Thank you to the Board of Directors for their consistent and constant support these last few years. Cattail is poised for great things, and I wish the Members and Staff nothing but the best.

PATIO & TURN STATION NEWS

This season the Food & Beverage team’s focus is on the Patio and Turn Station. These two areas play an important role in the daily operation of the Club. The Turn Station was a new addition last season,

and you could say it was a “test run.” We learned a lot about what you, the Members, expected at the Turn Station. We took all of the comments that we gathered and put something together that we feel will appeal to all Members who use the area. The layout has been improved. We found that Members had a hard time seeing what was offered, so we decided to add a “grab & go” refrigerator to make the selection process quick and easy. Healthier

BUNKER to BUNKER I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work under two Bill Stausbaugh Award winners as an Assistant Golf Professional in Tony Pancake (Crooked Stick Golf Club) and Dennis Satyshur (Caves Valley Golf Club), along with some other great mentors. Everything I have learned about the golf business and how to conduct myself as a professional every day, came from observing and soaking in the knowledge these PGA Professionals possess. I wanted to work for these people because I knew they had proven leadership ability and a history of advancing their Assistants’ careers. I know that I wouldn’t be in the position I am today as your Head Professional without these experiences. I feel a great responsibility to ‘pay it forward’ and work to make Cattail Creek Country Club a place that attracts highly motivated and driven individuals, and to helping them achieve their goals. This commitment can present some short term challenges and more frequent turnover, as evidenced by the recent departures of Tyler Chaplin and K.J. McClay. Despite these challenges, I believe the end result is a better overall product for our Members. Our two newest employees, Annie Shearer (Buyer and Merchandiser) and Lewis Schnauble (PGA First Assistant) have hit the ground running and are excited to be here. David Amato is thriving in his new role as Assistant Golf Professional and Outside Service Supervisor, and our two 7-month PGM Interns from Campbell University (Jonathan Mansberger and Jared Richardson) will be arriving in mid-May. I am confident that the team we have assembled is prepared to deliver a first class, comprehensive, full service golf operation in 2017. If there is anything we can do for you, or if you have any questions about anything and everything having to do with golf, it is our pleasure to help. We look forward to seeing you at the Club and teeing it up with you soon! Everything for Golf,

RICKY’S TIP Do you have a game plan for your next round of golf? Here’s a suggestion: Set a goal for how many shots it takes you to get the ball in the hole around the greens. I’d be willing to wager your score will be lower with this goal in mind. A good game plan for an average golfer would be to take three shots to hole out from forty yards in. Never four. For a low handicap golfer, the goal should be to get up and down in two shots more often than not. Getting up and down two times out of three is a good round of golf. Scoring boils down to where you save the most strokes with your short game. Practice your short game more than your long game. We have two beautiful practice greens here at Cattail, but I notice the Members spend more time hitting balls on the Range. Golf isn’t just about hitting perfect shots—it’s about recovery. That’s why I recommend this game plan to you.
MORE TIPS FROM RICKY Ø Try to land the ball on the green with your short shots. This prevents bad bounces from longer, patchy fringe and rough turf. Ø Always spot where you want to land the ball. Aim there and let it run to the target. I’ve been practicing that way ever since I started playing golf. It helped me develop a feel for distance. Ø When I first started playing bunker shots, I was taught to follow through and finish high on sand shots. Unless you’re faced with a short shot to a tight pin, that’s still solid advice.

Farewell, Alex CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]
When I first came to interview at Cattail four years ago, Alex Justiniani took me over to the Clubhouse to have lunch and talk about his view of how he wanted to grow the program at Cattail. He insisted that I eat as he went over what his plans were--then every time I took a bite, he asked a question, and I was stuck with food in my mouth. (This happened approximately five times). Anyway, it was eerie how similar our ideas were, and how much we saw eye to eye right off the bat. In the tennis profession, it’s very difficult to find someone who shares similar philosophies, ideologies, and passion for the way a program should be run. After that, he showed me Courts 6 and 7 overlooking the water and Golf Course, and told me that’s where I would be teaching, should I get the job. I left that interview excited and anxious--hoping that I would be able to work with Alex and teach with that view. (Spoiler alert, I got the job). The first week or so was stressful--we had a trip to Amelia Island with about 30 Members, and we both wanted to make a positive impact right away. The vibe for that first week was-tense. I remember thinking, I am eternally grateful for everything Alex has done “Jeez, does this guy ever smile?” Then a few days later, for me. I have learned an incredible amount from him we left for Amelia Island. We met at Cattail around on and off the Court. Being able to teach in one of the 3:00 A.M. to carpool to the airport after one of those most beautiful tennis clubs in the country, continuing standard Maryland February snowfalls. As we start my tennis education, meeting my girlfriend--all of those to pull away in Alex’s car, he says, “Hey, you left your things would not have been possible without Alex giving courtesy light on in your car”. Embarrassed that I was me the opportunity at Cattail Creek. holding us up, I quickly got out and jogged to my car I could go on and on about Alex as a Tennis Professional, to turn out my light. I then slipped on a spot of ice-- a boss, and as a friend--but all three are overshadowed both legs in the air, and fell completely on my back. I by his abilities as a father. For those of you who have shot up immediately and yelled, “I’m okay!” The entire seen him in this capacity, you know I’m not lying! I am ride to the airport, I thought Alex was going to veer off so happy that he is able to continue his career at Sea the road in a fit of laughter. Although I got quite the Colony and be near his family. We will surely miss him at shiner, it was the best “ice breaker,” and our friendship Cattail Creek, but I could not be more excited for him, began on that day and has grown ever since. both professionally and personally. Good luck, boss! MAY 2017
