Kid Zone Fall Hours The Cattail Creek Kid Zone offers shortterm babysitting while a parent is on the Club premises. It is located on the lower level of the Clubhouse. You can view complete details about the Kid Zone on our website. Kids are not permitted in the Kid Zone except when a babysitter is present.

We also regularly ask questions on our Facebook page to gather your feedback on events. Surveys are sent after certain events, tournaments, and camps to evaluate your experience so we can continue to improve. We take into account the feedback you provide very seriously when we make decisions and plan future events.

...My Take on the Value of Getting Involved at Cattail TOM COLE [CLUB PRESIDENT] When I joined Cattail Creek in 2002, I only knew two Members. During my first year as a Member, I golfed with Steve Weber, the Green Committee Chairman at the time. During that first round we talked about the course and how it was being maintained. Steve invited me to join the Green Committee starting the next year. From that point forward, I have had the opportunity to meet dozens of Members and make many good friends. It is enjoyable to come to the Club and spend time with your friends, and being involved in the leadership of the Club creates even more situations where you meet different people. If I hadn’t gotten involved in the leadership of the Club, I never would have met as many wonderful people as I have – "Participating with the Members and that includes the who get involved and do things members, and the that benefit the Club is more staff!”

Looking at it from another angle, I’m often told I should get double my current pay for the job I do as the Board President. I’m never sure how to take that since the pay is zero! Seriously, being on a committee or on the Board of Directors creates situations where you get to work with Members and the staff on various projects, events, or enhancements for the Club. It seems like every month I meet someone, or hear about a situation, where a Member or a staff member took an action that had a positive impact on another Member, or the Club in general. Hearing of, and participating with the Members who get involved and do things that benefit the Club is more valuable to me than any pay I could ever ask for.
DEADLINE TO DOWNGRADE/RESIGN All requests to downgrade your Membership category, or resign, for the 2013 year, must be received in writing by November 15, 2012 and will take effect on the coming January 1. Children’s Etiquette Class: Essential, Educational, but also very FUN! LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR] I have had the pleasure of working with Cathy Hanson and Carol Haislip, Directors at the esteemed International School of Protocol, for quite a few years now. I wholeheartedly believe in their programs, which range the gamut covering business and social topics for children and adults alike.

This class is an amazing opportunity for our Cattail Kids, and absolutely worth the investment. Most importantly, kids leave the class feeling comfortable at the thought of being in a variety of different settings amongst people of all walks of life; I hope you will register today! The Children’s Etiquette Class will be held on Saturday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m. The class is best suited for children ages 6-11. Click here to register.
My first introduction to the Baltimore County-based business came in 2006 while employed at Baltimore Country Club, which has contracted Cathy and Carol to host Children’s Etiquette Classes for many years now. The bi-annual event is so respected and successful there, that it always sells out. I have also personally attended the ISP’s professional development courses and found them to be incredibly valuable. In the simplest terms, Cathy and Carol have mastered the art of relating to any given audience, making each individual feel important and comfortable, while still delivering a FUN program. Further, they keep up with the current times, as exemplified by some of our past kid’s programs that have covered topics such as ‘Holiday Etiquette’ and ‘Texting, Cell Phone and Social Media Etiquette.’ In addition to dining manners taught over a 4-course meal, Cattail Kids will be introduced to basic social etiquette such as introductions, eye contact, and conversing with adults, to name a few. Each class always emphasizes a specific social topic, and I’m so pleased that our fall platform focus will be anti-bullying, a serious issue worldwide that has also hit home right here in Howard County.

Dear Member, With winter closely approaching, it is time to recognize some outstanding golfing achievements by our Cattail Members this season. The first round of applause is well deserved for the Cattail Junior Golf Members. Bennett Buch, Steven Segrist and Matthew Forester are part of the Marriotts Ridge High School golf team that qualified for the Maryland State Championship. In addition, I’d like to give a special recognition to Bennett Buch and Ashley Frost. Bennett, a freshman, won the 2012 State Individual Championship with a record breaking total of 138 (68-70) at the University of Maryland’s golf course. Ashley was the first ever Glenelg High School female golfer to qualify for the Individual State Championship. Congratulations! Secondly, congratulations to Mike Occi on qualifying for his first United States Senior Amateur, which was played at Mountain Ridge Country Club in Caldwell, New Jersey. Although Mike did not qualify for the match play portion of the Championship, we all know he will be back again next year to give it a another go! Captain, Howard Feldman, and his B-Team members deserve a standing ovation for

their successful defense of the 2012 B-Team Championship. The finals were played at Caves Valley Golf Club with Cattail edging out Sparrow’s Point with a narrow two point victory. The Championship came down to the final match of Bob Menton and Tim Berry, needing two points to tie and two and half to win. When they revealed they won all three points, it marked the first time in B-Team history that a club successfully defended the Championship. MEET BOB WAMPLER Dear Cattail Creek Member, The opportunity to come on board as your PGA Head Golf Professional and serve you, your families, and your guests, is an absolute honor. It will be my mission, as well as the Golf Professional Staff’s mission, to consistently provide service excellence and an unforgettably positive golf experience on a daily basis. I am looking forward to building upon the already-positive momentum we have going at Cattail Creek. Meeting each and every one of you and building strong, long-lasting relationships with you and your families will be one of my first priorities. To provide a little information on my background, I graduated in 2005 from the Pennsylvania State University’s Professional Golf Management Program and have been a Class A Member of the PGA since 2007.
Prior to coming to Cattail Creek, I have had the opportunity to work under the leadership of Tony Pancake at Crooked Stick Golf Club (IN), Dennis Satyshur at Caves Valley Golf Club (MD), Alan Surges at the Stock Farm Club (MT) and Nick Wolfe at Waynesborough Country Club (PA). Most recently, I was promoted to the PGA Head Golf Professional at Waynesborough Country Club this past summer. On a personal level, my wife of five years, Kate, and I, are excited to welcome the newest addition to our family this holiday season. Our first child is due on or around December 30th, and we are excited to plant roots in the Baltimore area. For the next few months, I will be working with my team at Waynesborough Country Club, as well as with Jason Marciniec and the Cattail Creek team, to ensure a
smooth and positive transition on both ends. Additionally, I want to make sure that I am available and here to support my wife through the final stages of her pregnancy and for the birth of our daughter, Audrey. I will be at Cattail Creek on a full-time basis beginning February 1, 2013 and sincerely look forward to meeting all of you. In the meantime, I can be reached by email at bwampler@wcc1965.org. October ended with some seriously soggy weather. Hurricane Sandy came through and dropped over 48 hours of non-stop rain on the Golf Course, totaling over 6 inches. That is almost 25 million gallons of water in two days. Needless to say, the Course may be a little soft for a while. With temperatures dropping now, and the much lower angle of the sun, it will take a good stretch of sunny days to get the Course firmed back up. This month, we will pull aerification cores out of the fairways. As soon as the fairways dry out, we will begin tackling this arduous task. In the past two years, we have seen the fairways firm up and become a more dense playing surface. Pulling aerification cores and topdressing allows for more root growth and better water penetration,

which both lead to a firmer surface. In the future, we hope to simply revert to only using solid tines on the fairways (not pulling cores out) but for now, we need to continue removing the thatch layer that is the inherent problem with bentgrass. If the weather can cooperate, we will also be aerifying the tees along with the fairways. Thankfully, Sandy knocked a good amount of the leaves out of trees, so leaf intrusion should be kept to a minimum this November. Keep up with the Blog for weekly updates! Laughter and smiles were abundant as we remembered a dear friend and supported a very important cause. Cathy’s daughter, Julianna attended the event and said, “The weather was perfect and the ladies did an

Our Head Golf Professional, Jason Marciniec, worked closely with the event planners; Nic Flickinger also donated his time with a “pro shot on No. 9,” and Ricky Serrano donated a lesson for longest drive. Cattail may not be a village, but it’s certainly a wonderful community, made up of caring and fun individuals, who all contributed to making this event successful and special!

The weather on the day of the event was ideal, with a bright blue sky and endless sunshine! The ladies were decked out in purple, the signature color of pancreatic cancer research, and purple was sprinkled throughout the event through balloons tied to the golf carts, accented gift bags and flowers stationed at each tee. More than 45 women registered for the event

and collectively raised nearly $4,000, which included a corporate sponsorship and a large personal tax deductable donation!

Cattail recently hosted a beautiful philanthropic event, and I’d like to share with you the inspiration behind it, and the amazing results. On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, the CCWTA Tuesday 9-Hole League hosted a Ladies' Invitational and Luncheon supporting pancreatic cancer research and awareness. The event was held in memory of one of our league’s members, Cathy Herold, who passed away from the terrible disease in 2010.
The CCWTA 9-Hole League looks forward to making this an annual event and hosting it again in September 2013,
to help continue spreading awareness and fundraising for pancreatic cancer research. I was so deeply touched by the many personal stories shared with me on the day of the event by Cattail Members and Guests who have had family members or friends taken by this horrific disease. It has encouraged me to try to bring more awareness to pancreatic cancer. I hope you will consider joining us as a participant next year, or by making a tax deductable donation on the day of the event. RICKY'S TIP: Use the New Learning Center! (Part One: The Sam Putt Lab) RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] Did you know that most golfers shoot in the 90's? Forty of those strokes take place on the putting green. At the Learning Center, we have the same device that the top tour professionals are using to perfect their short game. It's called the Sam Putt Lab, and it can help you break 30 putts in a round. The Sam Putt Lab ("Sam" stands for Science and Motion), will give you a complete analysis of your putting stroke and style. This amazing technology provides us with all kinds of detailed reports, such as the consistency of your aim, centeredness of contact, the path, and the length of your stroke. Having this data allows us to see the consistency and inconsistency of your putting stroke, which not only helps us improve your putting, but can also give us the data to properly fit you with the correct putter.
October Golf Happenings NIC FLICKINGER [FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL] The Men's Member-Member rounded out the month of September on the Course. The two-day tournament saw much great play in each of the four formats: better ball, aggregate, alternate shot, and scramble. The full field of 108 golfers played under great conditions for both rounds, and at the end of the second round, the six flight winners dueled it out in a three-hole shootout. Tim Carr and Bill Davidow were able to emerge as the champions, with Robert Yoon & Sang Oh and Eric Frost & Mark Biegel finishing second and third, respectively. Congratulations to all of our Flight winners: First Flight: Tim Carr & Bill Davidow Second Flight: Eric Frost & Mark Biegel Third Flight: Jim Selfridge & Rob Bowman Fourth Flight: Greg Poling & John Jorgenson Fifth Flight: Robert Yoon & Sang Oh Sixth Flight: Peter Brophy & Barry Downey One week later, the two-day Husband & Wife tournament was contested by ten teams, all attempting to take down the defending champions of this event, Kathy & Mike Occi. Unfortunately, a beautiful day of weather the day before gave way to a very wet and soggy tournament day. Although the Saturday conditions were tough, the defending champs proved to be too much to handle again this year as their score of 150 was more than enough to defend their title. The second place honors in the gross division went to Wendy & Scott Michaelson with a score of 161. Leading the way in the net division were Sondra & Ross Rappaport with a score of 133, and right behind them in second were Loraine & Charles Ruttenberg at 134. October 17 saw the close of one of the year-long events at Cattail Creek: the Men’s Founder’s Cup. Forty-nine teams began this better ball match play event and in the end, John White & Dan Deignan (pictured above), came out on top. Their title came at a 2&1 victory over Scott Shigo & John Jorgenson. Congratulations to Ray Ignacio & Scott Segrist and Dave Kopp & Joe Fields for making it into the final four.

With the golf season coming to an end, there is but one tournament left on the horizon! Be sure to mark your calendars for the Superintendent's Revenge Tournament on Saturday, November 10. It's going to be a fun one.
{ member spotlight: CHERYL GUTH } Q. You were mentioned on the Maryland Daily Record’s list of the 2012 Top 100 Women. Congratulations on such an achievement! With such a busy career and your involvement in Cattail Leadership, you still found time to sweep these tournaments.! What have you noticed about the evolution of Women’s Golf here?
Cheryl has been a Member of Cattail Creek since the early days. Over the years, she has served on the Board of Directors (1996-2001; 2009-present), the Nominating Committee (2002 and 2008), and the Golf Committee (2005-present). She also served as the Club Secretary from 1997-2001 and has been a member of the CCWGA since the Club opened in 1993. Cheryl actively participates in the Wednesday Evening League, Club golf tournaments and the Women's "A" Team. During her service on the Board, she participated in several special projects, including the preparation of definitive Membership rules and regulations, a Member handbook, documentation for the bond exchange program and Club governance procedures. This summer, Cheryl had quite the winning streak on the Course, taking the Women’s President’s Trophy, Senior Club Championship, Women’s Club Championship, and the Women’s Founder’s Cup. When not playing golf, Cheryl practices law with McGuireWoods LLP in Baltimore, Maryland. Her practice includes the areas of municipal finance, real estate finance and employee benefits.
A. Women’s golf at Cattail started strong and continues to evolve. I think the change in the makeup of our membership has put pressure on participation. We have a lot of young families who are juggling their responsibilities at home and at work, and those women are finding it difficult to fit golf into their schedules. So participation is not where I’d like to see it, but we are getting more support from the golf staff and I think we’re moving forward. The leagues provide a great way to meet other women golfers of all abilities – I would urge everyone to come out and and give it a try. Q.You and your husband have been Cattail Members since the late 1980’s. What do you like most about this Club? A. Definitely the people. The members here have always been very friendly and open. We only knew one other member when we joined, but we’ve made so many good friends here over the years. And it’s a fun, relaxing place to spend our free time, which is important when
your free time is limited like ours is! Q. You’ve also been involved at the leadership level of these committees since 1996, and now on the board. What advice would you have for members considering getting involved with a committee? A.Think about what special skills you have and the areas that you are interested in and find a committee where those skills and interests can be used. The club needs you. Cattail would not be what it is today without the thousands of hours that our volunteer committee and board members have devoted to the club over the years. Q. It’s clear that even your leisurely hobbies keep you busy in your free time. Is there anything besides golfing that you enjoy in your down time? A. Bob and I enjoy the theater. We have subscribed to CenterStage for over 20 years and I currently serve on their Board of Trustees. We are also huge Ravens fans and have had season tickets since they came to Baltimore. And we love to travel. We recently came back from a wonderful vacation to Barcelona and southern France and are headed back to London in November for a theater trip with CenterStage. Last year, we traveled to India with fellow Cattail members Steve and Debbie Zients and Vijay and Geetanjali Narayen.
Cheryl is also a member of the Board of Trustees of CenterStage, state theatre of Maryland. Recently, she was recognized by The Daily Record as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women, an annual list created to recognize outstanding achievement by women as demonstrated through professional accomplishments, community leadership and mentoring. Cheryl resides in Ellicott City with her husband, Bob, and two cats, Nick and Nora. We had the opportunity to interview Mrs. Guth about her recent accomplishments and contributions to Cattail... enjoy!

Drew Smith is from Baltimore, MD and has worked at Cattail for 5 years as a server. He is studying Exercise Science at Howard Community College, and will be starting classes at the Baltimore School of Massage Therapy in January. Drew is on his way to becoming a personal trainer or physical therapist - he would eventually like to work for a sports team. In his free time, Drew enjoys listening to, and making, music as well as playing sports with his friends and family members. Drew hopes to one day travel through Europe.

Anna Tucker is from West Friendship, MD. She studied Communication and Marketing at DeSales University until this May when she graduated! Anna has worked at Cattail for 3.5 years as a server. She hopes to soon pursue a career in the field she studied, or return to school for a second degree in Elementary Education. Anna loves to play the ukelele, snowboard, and entertain her neices and nephews, who are "the best!"
Luis Velez is from Olney, MD. Luis is studying Finance and Spanish at Towson University where he also plays volleyball. He has been working at Cattail for 2 years as a server. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, especially golf, as well as spending time with his family and friends. In the future, Luis would like to be a stock broker with an office on Wall Street!

Melissa Wrobleski is from Glenwood, MD. She has been serving and driving the drink cart at Cattail for 2.5 years. She studies Nursing at Howard Community College, and hopes to become successful in the medical field so she can have a daily impact on other people. Melissa lives with her Granny, and Yorkie named Tinkerbelle, and enjoys being an artist in her free time.

Cattail Members represented the Club in several levels of men’s and women’s USTA combo leagues. Advancing to the Maryland District Tournament were Suzanne Arena’s 5.5 team, Eileen Dietz’s 6.5 team, Kellie Keehn’s 7.5 team, John Kelly’s 6.5 team, and Don Reuwer’s 7.5 team.
It’s hard to believe another full outdoor season at Cattail is coming to a close. I would first like to congratulate the winners of the 2012 Women’s Member-Member, Laurie Duncan and Terri Jubb. The finalists were Theresa Puchalla and Kelly Bendel. The final CCWTA Social was held October 24th. A great time was had by all! There were some very creative costumes, with the 'Best Costume Award' going to Lori Jobson, who dressed as a Mermaid. Cattail was very well represented at the Combo State Championships held in Columbia the weekend of October 19-21. Cattail is starting to be recognized not just as a young, local league but rather as a skilled group of teams of which the competition would rather not face. Please keep in mind that if you or your team would like to organize a weekend trip to the beach, talk to me as soon as possible; weekends are filling up quickly. The date for the 2013 Charleston Trip has been set for April 11-14. Keep an eye out for an email with the details in early November. �

Women's Member-Member JULIE SEANEZ The Women’s Tennis Member - Member Tournament, held on October 12th, was a tremendous success! This year we had the largest turnout in Cattail history with 32 players participating. Terri Jubb and Laurie Duncan (pictured below) edged Teresa Puchalla and Kelly Bendel to become the 2012 Women’s Champions. Terri and Laurie beat Pam Henley and Sherry Cummings in the semis. Teresa and Kelly defeated Eileen Dietz and Laura Haney in the other semi round. The Tennis Staff raffled off some prizes during the tournament. Kellie Keehn was the big item winner; her name was drawn for a Wilson racquet! Other raffle winners were Charlene Della Ratta, Erin Flavin, Jamie Coles and Kelly Garofalo. We'd like to extend our thanks to all of the Members who braved the cold wind to participate!

side resides belief in yourself. "I CAN make it through my bad times. I CAN win despite my mistakes and failures." On the other side of failure, mental toughness becomes part of your inner arsenal of mental weapons. You no longer fear mistakes or failures. In fact, you welcome them as an opportunity to set you apart from the other players. You are mentally tough and you know it!
This is exactly what many players do in the fog of failures. They emotionally just sit there! If they would just stay positive and keep moving, eventually the fog would clear and they would be on the other side of failure.
Note: If you decide to embark on this journey to the other side of failure, pack well, but leave your emotional baggage behind.
What can players learn on the other side of failure? Let me start with this. Pros have missed forehands, backhands, serves and many other shots in match play and practice, but they can still win! Did it ever dawn on you that it is not the misses or failures that make you lose but your mental attitude toward those failures? You insist on stopping in the emotional fog of failure, never learning what is on the other side!
Please be courteous to Members coming onto the courts behind you, and always take a couple of minutes to pick up all of your tennis balls before leaving, especially after using the ball machine.
On the other side resides a clearer view of failure and a clearer view of where you are going. On the other

Let's suppose you are in a match or you are having a training session. You miss a few fore-hands, some backhands and a number of serves. This happens again and you become annoyed. You mentally stop, become emotional and think, "I can't win a match with all these mistakes. What am I doing wrong? I must stop making these mistakes." From there you become tentative and hypersensitive about your mistakes. Every mistake from then on becomes mentally internalized. You think, "There I go again, another miss. I'm going to lose if I keep this up." You are firmly parked in an emotional environment of failure. Now everything that happens will be filtered though this emotional environment that you, and you alone, have created. Disaster looms!
To help you understand, imagine you are walking over a bridge partially covered in fog. Everything is clear as you begin. Halfway up the bridge, you walk into the fog.The fog lasts for about fifty feet. All you have to do is continue to walk through the fog to reach the other side. Instead, you panic, sit down and stay in the fog. As far as you are concerned, everything is foggy and this is the way it will stay.

Players should be aware that there is a lot of good on the other side of failure. Let me explain. Most players reach the point of failure, put on the brakes and do not think their way through to the other side. Instead, their minds become cloudy with emotional thinking, and they begin a negative freefall. In essence, they stop and sit in emotional turmoil. They avoid the invaluable lessons failures offer that build the mental toughness necessary for future match challenges. All of these lessons reside on the other side of failure.
