Another exciting project that has been a topic of conversation for the past few years is a year-round tennis solution for our Members and Professional Staff. After months of research, data collection, surveys and options review, the Board of Directors has voted to move forward with the construction of a four-court tennis air-structure, or bubble as it is more commonly known. There will not be a special assessment for this project, as it will be financed over a ten-year period. We are confident that the bubble will fund itself through block time, lessons and clinics over the winter/indoor season. Our goal is to keep you aware of the process by communicating regularly and openly. At this time we are in the design phase of the bubble and have engaged an architect to coordinate the

Getting past the intimidation factor, and on to a healthy life LYNN SLUPSKI [MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR] & John Foelber [fitness director]

Lynn: I know I should work out, and I actually really want to, but I never do, and I have no idea where to even begin. John: There are a couple of questions you should answer first before even worrying about the actual workout routine. What are your fitness goals? Be specific. “I want to lose weight,” is certainly a good goal, but a more specific target will be more helpful – “I want to lose 25 lbs. before my son’s wedding in four months.” What workout setting will make you most comfortable? Close your eyes and envision different scenarios. Think of yourself working alone, with a close friend, blending into a large group fitness class, participating in small group training with a couple of others, or one-on-one private training. Then start with the scenario that feels best. When can I realistically workout? Setting an unrealistic schedule and then not being able to keep up from the get-go is a quick way to sabotage your plan. Sit down and think about days and times of day that you are most likely to be able to regularly make a little time to better yourself through exercise. Lynn: I am so out of shape that I honestly think I might die if you put me through one of those workouts I see on ‘The Biggest Loser.’

Dismissing these feelings though, doesn’t help you or the many others who feel the same way. In reality, you are entering an environment

John: Let’s be honest, those types of weight loss shows are not real life. When you see someone lose 30 lbs. in one week, that’s not realistic. The workouts on those shows are over-the-top, with prescreened contestants, doctor-supervised workouts, and on-site paramedics due to the risk involved. Communicate with your trainer upfront about your goals and hesitations so you are on the same page when initiating your first exercise routine. If working out alone, remember that those show regimens are not necessarily healthy or safe; go at your own pace. Lynn: I’m embarrassed! I feel like everyone else in the Fitness Center works out regularly, in their trendy fitness clothes and shoes. I would be red-faced exhausted after 5 minutes on the treadmill and I haven’t bought a new pair of tennis shoes in three years! John: Any fitness professional or gym rat would quickly dismiss those feelings by telling you that ‘no one is watching you, or cares.’

CAT TALES 2014

10

that you are not knowledgeable about, or comfortable with. The best way to appease these feelings is to control your workout environment. Start with a machine, or do an exercise, that you are already familiar with. Put the treadmill on slow, with no slope, and don’t worry about what all of the other buttons and settings do. Stick with that pace as long as you need or want to. Workout attire covers a wide spectrum. Some will always sport the newest anti-fatigue, sweat-proof matching outfit, but there are others who have been wearing the same “I ran the Baltimore Marathon 1984” t-shirt for years. No one really cares. Promise. Lynn: If I saw a benefit to personal training, I would definitely do it, but I really don’t understand why I need to. I can make myself do cardio for 30 minutes, I just need to find my own self-discipline. John: It really is a personal decision to use a trainer, based on the goals you outlined for yourself.

Fitness Objections (This is the real transcript from John and Lynn’s fitness consultation conversation.) John: What are your fitness goals? What do you want to accomplish by working out? Lynn: I want to gain muscle without losing weight and increase my cardiovascular capacity without losing weight. I would like to get stronger and find a casual, energetic activity that I enjoy doing and is in my comfort zone. John: It seems like you have a good idea of what you want. What have you been doing to accomplish these goals? Lynn: Um... Well… I have done a lot of stuff. I did ‘air yoga’ for six weeks. Sometimes I jog. I tried broom ball once, I jump rope sometimes. Oh yeah and I’m great at pull-ups though I don’t do them often! John: That’s great! How well have those activities helped you

OCTOBER Fitness Challenge:

40/40/40 Suspension Strap Challenge John Foelber [fitness director] Our last suspension strap challenge, 40 atomic pushups followed by 40 bodyweight rows, focused more on upper body strength and endurance. This month we are switching it up and giving your lower body a kick in the butt, literally. Try this 40/40/40 challenge and your glutes, hamstrings and legs will be strong, tight and firm by the end of the month. Strong hips and legs not only look good but are critical to lower back health and athletic performance in sports such as golf and tennis.

Here it is, plain and simple, but not easy.

40 left leg lunges 40 right leg lunges Rest 60 seconds 40 hip thrusters

Congratulatio ns to Member Mike Jack for the Septembe winning r Challeng ew ith a record ed 19 workouts! A total of 16 Members part icipated - Gre at job!

I assume a good number of our Members can perform all of these already, so the winning score will be the Member who completes the challenge the fastest.

Start upright facing away from the anchored part of the suspension strap with your left foot in the suspension strap bent to a 90 degree angle.

Insert both feet into the stirrups so that the straps hang vertically and position your body so that your arms are resting by your hips and your knees are bent so that your knees are directly over your hips

Bend your right leg to initiate the lunge while reaching back with your left leg untill your left knee touches without resting on the pad. Your weight will shift back and be evenly distributed across both legs. If done properly, your right knee will not drift forward and should remain over your right ankle. Repeat with right leg.

Extend and lift the hips so that your thighs and torso create a straight line, hold for up to one second, return to your starting position and repeat. During this movement your knee joint should not extend, but rather, stay flexed at your 90 degree starting position.

WHAT IS THE RYDER CUP?

TYLER CHAPLIN [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

The end of September witnessed the Ryder Cup Matches, more commonly known as ‘The Ryder Cup,’ which is a biennial golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and is contested every two years, with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.

Click the image to see the full version of our Short Game Area Project plan!

The event’s trophy is named after the person who donated it, Samuel Ryder. The Ryder Cup, and its counterpart, the Presidents Cup, are unique in not just the world of golf, but all professional sports. Despite being high-profile events that bring in tens of millions of dollars in TV and sponsorships, the players receive no prize money and compete purely for the victory.

PRACTICE with a Purpose RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION] In the 18 years that I’ve been teaching golf, the average golfer’s practice routine has not changed at all. Most people head to the driving range and simply hit balls with no real plan for improvement. Your time is valuable, which is why it is imperative that you use your precious practice time more

wise. There are three types of practice to master – a warm up before a round, a regular practice on the range and around the practice green, and practice on the course.

The Warm-up Loosen your muscles and find a feel for your swing before your round. Focus on making solid contact with the balls without worrying about the direction of the shots, except to note how they are curving. That will likely be your shot shape for your round, so be prepared for it on the course. Don’t try to change your swing during a warm-up session; make only minor adjustments, if any.

The Full Practice Session Before beginning, choose a specific problem or skills to work on and select drills that will target it. Always end a session by incorporating the sensations you have developed with the drills into full swings with different clubs. Choose a target, visualize your shot trajectory, and always keep a consistent shot routine. Since 45% of your score is accumulated from within 50 yards, spend the majority of your time working on the chipping and pitching aspects of your short game. Practice putting drills, including some very long putts, to get feel for distance and to develop confidence.

On-Course Practice Go out alone in the evening when the course is not busy and play two or three balls. Practice playing in different situations such as fairway bunker shots, shots from bad lies in the rough, and others that you can’t practice on the range. Play your own scramble using the worst shot so you know what you need to work on. Or play a two-man competition against yourself, hitting two balls all the way around and keeping score. On-course practice is so important in connecting the gap between the practice tee and the actual round. Ricky working with a Member during his Ladies Beginner Golf Clinic in September! Handicaps Shouldn’t be a Headache ELI MIRELES [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

Every golfer wants a fair shot at beating their friend in a round of golf. The United States Golf Association (USGA) ranks the skill level of players by their ‘handicap index’ or ‘handicap’ which are used interchangeably, and are intended to keep play ‘fair’ between golfers of different skill levels. But how exactly do your scores convert into your handicap? How is my handicap calculated? What does it represent? A ‘handicap’ represents a player’s potential ability. It is calculated by averaging a player’s ‘best’ scores, and then taking 96% of that average. A ‘handicap differential’ is used to determine what scores are deemed to be a player’s ‘best’ but for the average player, it is usually their top 10 scores.

Are there any other adjustments that are made to handicaps?

Can the above handicap adjustment ever be waived? No. The above policy is an actual rule that appears in the ‘Rules of Golf,’ section 3-5/9-3c. It states that no person, golf pro, golf committee, club, or course has authority to dismiss any formal rule, including the required handicap adjustments for competitors playing from different sets of tees.

Our first ‘Mystery’ location was the James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia. Their course is completely different from Cattail’s with tall trees, open fairways, and a relatively flat landscape. James River is a refreshing course where you can swing the club freely without being harshly penalized. After playing James River, we left to have dinner at our next ‘Mystery’ location, Kingsmill Resort, in Williamsburg, Virginia. We dined at the James Landing Grille, a lovely seafood restaurant in the resort where we enjoyed dinner on the riverfront while watching the sunset. We spent the evening in the suites, with everyone having their own bedroom and an 8:00 a.m. wake-up call! Brunch was delicious, and included made-to-order omelets, fresh oatmeal, and all the bacon you

Keys to a

Killer Forehand

CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]

Most of us prefer hitting forehands to backhands. There are exceptions to every rule, but generally, tennis players favor their forehand. This means that if possible, we want to look for opportunities to hit forehands and make them as lethal as they can be.
