Fall Fitness MIKE MCKEE [Senior Fitness Instructor]

Happy October, everyone! As we start to see the leaves change and adapt with the new season, there is no better time to also see your own version of change. Be sure to switch up your workout routine from the norm, because your body will adapt to those specific stresses on your muscle and you may find that you’ve hit a “plateau.” You can make adjustments such as number of sets, amount of resistance, movement speed, or just switch out the old exercises with completely new ones. I hear there are a few very fun and knowledgeable trainers over at Cattail’s Fitness Center that are eager to assist you with new ideas for your fitness routine and help you get the results you’ve always wanted! Free fitness consultations are available to all Members at your convenience. To help you get started, here are a few tips you can use when designing a routine:

• Always include a 5-10 minute warmup and a cooldown. This can utilize the cardio machines, lighter versions of your resistance exercises, stretches, and foam rolling. This will greatly reduce risk of injury, as well as next day soreness! • When stretching or foam rolling, always spend at least 30 seconds in the stretch, per muscle, if your goal is to increase flexibility. 5-10 second stretches will not do much for you. •Perform

your

exercises

according

to

your goals. 4-6 reps = strength building. 8-12 reps =

hypertrophy (muscle growth/

toning). 15-20 reps = toning and fat loss

If you’d like to know more, I am always happy to help, and look out for more tips in future fitness articles. As always, stay active, and I look forward to seeing everyone around the fitness center.

Even in areas that we treat with fungicide, like the green surrounds, the disease continues to take ryegrass to the ground and thin areas out. Sometimes when we mis-hit a volley our grip can turn in our hand, try to reset to the proper grip if you notice

This grip, sometimes referred to as the “shake hands” or “hammer grip” can be found by holding the racquet as if you were going to hammer a nail with the racquet frame’s edge. By holding the racquet this way, it allows us to hit both forehand and backhand volleys without

switching grips. This saves time when rushed at the net. With the continental grip we can also hit high, standard, or low volleys all with the same grip. We are also able to hit angle volleys from all positions on the court, whereas with the incorrect grip our volleys tend to travel straight ahead to our opponents. When up at the net, the goal of any volleyer is to make their opponents hit their shots upwards, back to the volleyer. This makes it easier for the volleyer to then hit a winning volley. By using the continental grip, we can impart underspin on the ball keeping it lower to the ground forcing our opponents into hitting awkward shots that pop up to us at the net. If we do not use the continental grip, our volleys will have either a side or top spin, which makes our volleys easier to be returned. When practicing this grip, sometimes we revert back to our old habits.

For one, it is difficult to practice

something that is uncomfortable or that forces us to make more mistakes than we are used to. Generally
