One Student Flies High

Dale Carnegie’s Young Adult Leadership Program If getting honor roll and starring in the track team wasn’t enough for Calvert Hall College High School student, Robbie Whalen, maybe becoming one of 3,000 of the youngest pilots in the county, and early acceptance into the Air Force, cut the cake. “It’s a very small community of pilots in America, maybe 600,000 pilots, and within them, he is one of the smallest percentage that there are, not that many achieve it at that young an age,” Robbie’s pilot’s instructor Jeffery Sherr told ABC2 News. Getting a pilot’s license last summer required Robbie to focus on abilities beyond how to fly a plane; he also needed to go through a one-on-one interview. To sharpen the communication and human relation skills needed to stand out, Robbie took the Dale Carnegie Young Adult Leadership Program. “First of all—I like to think I’m a good presenter, but this class put something measurable in my head about presenting,” said Robbie. “There are a lot of courses out there, but none that provided good examples on how to build those kinds of skills,” he said. Upon getting his pilot’s license, he was complemented on his ability to handle tough questions. Robbie gave credit to the Young Adult Leadership Program (Y.A.L.P.).

Getting the kids back on track! SARA COOPER [FITNESS INSTRUCTOR]

Getting back into a routine after a relaxing, vacation filled summer can seem stressful at times. Mornings are packed with waking the kids up, preparing breakfast, getting everyone dressed and rushing them out the door to catch the bus. Packing a lunch is the last thing on your mind. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle! 1. Prepare their lunches the night before to save time in the morning. Make it part of the evening routine. I personally like LunchBots stainless steel containers. You can purchase them with single, double, or tri compartments so items don’t mix and become mushy. 2. Get your kids involved with picking and packing their own lunches. If they feel empowered to have a say in selecting the foods they want, their food is more likely to end up in their bellies and not in the garbage. With that being said, give them

yum!

real food options. For example, if including fruit, give them a choice between strawberries, apples, or kiwi. 3. Make a water only rule. Water provides everything the body needs from quenching thirst to rehydration. If you do buy drinks, purchase ones with minimal calories, sugar and additives. Fruit juice, soda, and Gatorade contain lots of calories and sugar with no added benefit. In fact, they have been associated with weight gain, obesity, and Type II diabetes. Sugar can be hidden under other names, like (57 to be exact): Sucrose, Dextrose, Cane juice, Lactose, Maltose, Corn Syrup, Caramel, Maltodextrin. 4. When organizing meals, think about 3 major groups: protein, fats & carbohydrates (starchy & non- starchy).

20% Grains & starches

• Protein helps muscles and bones grow

& 10% Fats nuts

40% Vegetables & fruits 30% Meats, eggs, beans & dairy

other Nature always will find a way to balance things out. The rains this spring apparently used up all of our water credits

for the summer and fall. With only four inches of rain covering July, August and September, the pumphouse and wells have been hard at work keeping our playing surfaces alive and growing. The bentgrass on our greens, tees and fairways do not mind the cool, dry weather. Roots are once again digging deep and surfaces are firming up nicely. October is again predicted to have some great weather but with last year’s highs ranging from 51 to 85 degrees, anything can happen. The practice putting green is slated to open on Thursday, October 8. We have had great rooting weather so fa,r and we continue to gradually lower the mowing height on the new 007 bentgrass. This bentgrass exactly matches the bentgrass on our new Short Game Area greens and fairways. The freshly sodded green was also expanded to take over the two smaller approaches that were underutilized. This new space will allow us to install a 9-hole

GOLF Events

WOMEN’s GOLF MEMBER-GUEST Wednesday, October 7

As we move into October, we are gearing up for our Women’s and Men’s MemberMember. Our premiere Member golf events of the season are a great way to close out the year, and if you have not already signed up to play, this is one event you don’t want to miss. “Every end is a new beginning.” Although the 2015 season is drawing to a close, we are already working hard and planning for a successful 2016 season. Our goal as a Professional Staff will not change. We work for you, the Member, and strive to provide you with an exceptional golf experience, excellent hospitality and service, and a contagious enthusiasm for the great game of golf. I would like to express my gratitude to the Golf Professional Staff, who work very hard and long hours to help to achieve the Golf Committee’s and my vision for a successful golf operation. Thank you to Ricky Serrano,Tyler Chaplin, Matt Hill, Jamie Green, Lauren Burns and everyone on our outside service staff for their “buy-in,” commitment to excellence and hard work throughout the year. This is the time of the year that the Club experiences the most turnover. Although we are sad to lose some Members who may be relocating or experiencing difficult financial times, we are thrilled to welcome new Members to the Cattail Creek family. Now, I would like to ask all of you for

your help. I can remember when I was 11 years old, and my dad’s job moved our family from the Cleveland area to Philadelphia. I had to start at a new school, make new friends, and adjust to new surroundings. It took me awhile to feel comfortable and acquainted with the new area, culture, etc. That same apprehension can be felt by our new Members, and I hope that all of us do our part in giving them a warm welcome. As with any Club, Cattail Creek has some unique policies and guidelines. I am asking our current Members to be patient, understanding and welcoming to our new Members. You never get a 2nd chance at a 1st impression, and it will be a combined effort from the staff and the Membership to facilitate this. If a new Member is behind pace on the Golf Course, or makes the mistake of driving their golf cart in the rough, let’s use these situations as a teaching opportunity. Confronting the Member or yelling at them from a distance does not help. However, a friendly reminder, handshake and a smile will leave a positive, lasting impression and help elevate our Club’s reputation as one of the finest Clubs in the region. Thank you for joining me in this effort.

RICKY’S TIP RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF GOLF INSTRUCTION]

Swing a Broom & Improve Release One of the most common problems I notice when teaching my students is an inability to “release,” or square the clubface, at impact. The feeling is difficult to obtain because the club is moving with incredible speed as it approaches the ball. The following drill will train your hands, wrists and arms to instinctively rotate the clubface into square position at the critical moment. Not only will this drill help you release the club properly and more efficiently, it will strengthen and improve the performance of your big muscles in your legs, hips, side and back.

Procedure: Grab a broom so is resting sideways on the ground. Make a swing, allowing the broom to fan open on the back swing. On the downswing, the broom will offer plenty of resistance. You will feel resistance coming from behind you, proof that you are swinging along an inside path. In addition to making full swings, throw the broom at you target from time to time. This will force you to rotate your hands and forearms as in a real swing.,

Manufacturer Spotlight MATT HILL [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]

This month marks the roll out of new products from equipment manufacturers and below are some of the new products from the “Big Three”: Titleist, TaylorMade, and Callaway. From Titleist comes the new iron model 716 and their new hybrid model 816, promising to be the best product they have

created to date and covering all types of players from novice to Touring Professional. The 816 hybrid comes out to match the 2-year product cycle of the irons. Since hybrids are designed to replace those hard to hit long irons, it really makes perfect sense to have these new hybrids on the same rotation as their irons. TaylorMade launches their new M1 line of clubs and has quickly garnered the attention of the best players in the world. Called the “un-metalwood”, the M1 is a composite material clubhead that gives maximum forgiveness and benefits to all levels of players. Jason Day, the

world’s #1 player, instantly put these clubs into play during this tremendous streak he is on, which gives the club instant credibility and makes it one of the clubs that you must try. Callaway has reintroduced the Great Big Bertha and it has been well received in the public’s eye. It is available in many custom options including different crown colors that are fully customizable to fit your individual taste. Make sure you check out these exciting products in the Professional Shop and as always, if you need help determining the right model for you, please see any one of the Professional Staff. We have staff members from every manufacturer listed above that are experts on what items are right for you.

In our fifth year running, we had a record attendance with close to 200 participants and 25 categories. The event featured new and traditional social activities that were well attended and enjoyed. The event kicked off on Friday, September 11, with our first-ever VIP sponsor Pro-Am Round Robin. This event featured 10 pros from around the area teamed up with sponsors who donated $1,000 and higher. On Wednesday, September 16 we began matches and played a full day for the first time. Friday, September 18 featured the first-ever Friday Night Happy Hour, which was heavily attended. By Saturday, September 19 the matches were on full display with great matchups on every court fighting to get to the Finals on Sunday. Saturday night featured our “Players Party,” which has become the premier event for the Classic. Sunday, September 20 rolled in and all the Finals were on display while spectators watched and enjoyed the Lucky Loser’s Bloody Mary Party. I would like to thank all participants for joining us this year, and our volunteers and staff who made the event so successful. I would like to thank all of our sponsors, without you the event would not be possible. Please stay tuned to Tennis news in the next few weeks as we make our donation to the Claudia Mayer & Tina Broccolino Cancer Resource Center.

A Lesson on Taking Lessons Everyone takes a tennis lesson from time to time. Whether you are participating in a group or private lesson there are a few things you can do to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck. Here are just a few ideas to help you maximize your lesson experience.

1

Make sure that you come to each lesson with a goal in mind. Not every technical or strategic issue can be solved in a single lesson, but coming into

the lesson with an idea on what you want to work on will help eliminate time wasted discussing what the problem might be. Your goal could range from “How do I beat a lobber?” to something more specific like “Why is my backhand going in the net so much?”

2

It is important to remember the things you worked on with your pro after the lesson is over. If you learn or work on a new concept or stroke at your

lesson, make sure that you try to continue to work on those things in other groups or matches you play. If you do not make a conscious effort to set good habits in your other groups or block times, the work that you do with your pro at your lesson will be wasted. As with anything in life, the more you practice something the more it becomes habit. It is easy to get caught up in the fun of the drills and games of a clinic, but it is important to work on the new techniques that you practice in your lesson.

3

Make sure to come to every lesson with an open mind. It is difficult to change old habits if you are not open to change. If you are playing great at

your lesson, you probably are not working on the things you should be. Do not be afraid to make mistakes at your lesson. I promise the pros do not judge you on poor shots you hit at your lesson when you are working on new techniques or concepts! If you make sure to keep these things in mind, you will be sure to get the most out of your lesson!

A few fellows celebrating the 2015 Tennis Classic!

Baby it’s {Almost} Cold Outside Chris Cozzilio [Head tennis professional] Unfortunately, the outdoor season at Cattail is winding down, and the indoor season is just beginning. Although October is one of the prettiest months to salvage a little bit of outdoor tennis, harsh weather, such as snow, slush, sleet, and bitter cold temperatures will be here before we know it. Along with the day to day annoyances that winter brings, it can also negatively effect your tennis game if you’re not careful. Follow the following tips to make sure your game, and your wins, don’t hibernate this winter.

3. Wear gloves: The cold dries out your hands, which can cause cracks--a crack on your playing hand can make it nearly impossible to grip the racquet. Wearing gloves when you’re out in the cold air can help prevent these pesky cuts from popping up during your tennis time.

1. String saver: Always bring your racquets in the house after you’re done playing. In cold temperatures, leaving your racquets in the car can cause your racquet strings to lose tension. Lower and lower tension means more balls sailing long in block!

5. The balls: Tennis balls don’t like the cold either. Leaving them in the car or the garage can make them go dead faster--so even a fresh can could feel like a used can from ten years ago.

2. Stretch: The cold can tighten up your muscles. If you try and jump right into block without warming up your muscles, it can be recipe a for an injury. Try and get to your court time early and spend a few minutes stretching out in the lobby.

4. Having the right grip: A tacky or sticky grip can make it easier to hold the racquet in colder temperatures. The Wilson Pro Overgrip is one of the best around!

Hopefully, mother nature will be kind to us this winter and you will not need these tips too often, but just in case we have another winter like the last one, bundle up and follow these tips. See you on the Courts!
