NEW CATTAIL WEBSITE “HOW TO” GABBY FORTE [MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR]

With Cattail’s new website, updated mobile App and mobile website, there are a lot of changes to keep up with! The Marketing Department is here to help you navigate the new designs and find the information you need quickly. Read below for a “how to” for each of the three different ways to communicate via desktop or mobile device with Cattail. We hope this is helpful, but if you have any questions or need additional assistance navigating any of these areas, please contact Gianna Rico, Communications Director at gianna.r@cattailcreekcc.com or 410.489.4653 ext. 241.

WEBSITE (Used on desktop computers/laptops)

• When you get to the home screen of the public side of the website, you’ll want to immediately log in using your Member login credentials. Click “Member Login” on the top right-hand side of the screen. • Once you have entered the private side of the website, you’ll come to the home screen (pictured left) showing a rotation of flyers featuring upcoming events at the Club. The top of your screen hosts the main navigation, which is where you can find more detailed information for each of those specific areas.

• When you hover over an area (for example, the “Golf” section in picture to the right), you’ll see a drop down menu with many more options within that area.

• If you click the “Golf” section, you will see a screen show up that has those same navigation items on the left-hand side of the screen (as seen in the picture to the left). This section features some additional information, which you can view by clicking the “+” sign next

CAT TALES 2017

MOBILE SITE • The mobile site can be found by visiting www.cattailcreekcc.com on the browser of your mobile device. You’ll automatically come to the page shown in the picture on the left below.

HOW DO I LOGIN?

• To login on the mobile site, click the three lines on the top right-hand side of the page. This will show an additional menu, which can be viewed in the picture above, middle. Click the “Member Login” option at the bottom of that menu. You’ll then come to the Member login landing page , where you enter your credentials and click “sign in.” The home page on the mobile site mirrors the main website, so you will again see the rotation of banners featuring upcoming events (above right). • If you click the three lines at the top right-hand side of the screen again, you’ll see the main navigation. Click the “+” sign next to the name of the page you want to visit to see more options. Want to view the Restaurant menus? Click the “+” sign next to Dining, and then select “Menus.”

CATTAIL APP The Cattail App can be found where you normally download your Apps – the App store for iPhone users, and Google Play for Android users. Once downloaded, you will need to login using your Cattail username and password. The home page (pictured right) of the App shows the most-used functional pages of the website.

• In addition to the main menu on the home screen, there is a popout menu that you can view by clicking the “Menu” button on the top left-hand side of the page. This extra menu (viewed in the picture, left) gives additional information and options for what to do on the App. Here you can also view your Member profile, located at the bottom of the menu, and upload your picture. • If you would like to book a lesson, a tee time, a dinner reservation, etc. each of those pages looks very similar, as seen in picture to the right. This particular picture shows the tee time option – simply choose your date by clicking the “calendar” button, and then choose the time you would like to play. Click “Book Now” to complete the necessary information and confirm the booking.

We are just about finished here, but I am curious to know when you do retire, what do you want to be remembered for? laude is one of Cattail’s most respected employees by Members

and staff alike. He has worked at the Club since 1997 under four General Managers, and has witnessed the construction of our pool expansion, Fitness Center, and Golf Professional Shop. Whenever a Member or employee needs to place a name or face or recall Club historical facts, Claude is the go-to man. He is a fixture at Cattail, and we would like to thank him for his 20 years of service to the membership. Cheers to you, Claude!

Claude’s Sangria We thought it fitting to feature one of Claude’s famous cocktails - his sangria - as we are celebrating his 20th anniversary (see opposite page). His sangria is loved by many Members of the Club, and now you can make it for your family and friends at home. But don’t forget you can always stop by the Bar and get a glass of it yourself. This sangria is the perfect way to welcome fall. It’s spicy and sweet with a touch of warmth. Cheers! THE GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN [GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

A

s I look back at the newsletter from 2016 and just try and copy what I wrote then, I am thankful that

I cannot. The weather last year was miserably hot and wet. 2017 was still hot, and wet, but a few cooler days were thrown in to keep us sane. Overall the Golf Course has held up well save for a few spots in fairways. These areas just cannot keep up with a stressful Mid-Atlantic summer and will continue to be sodded out to a stronger variety of bentgrass. With aeration just about behind us, we are set up for an enjoyable fall.

As the green tees are built up, we will also be evaluating areas in the rough. Gray leaf spot has come earlier than ever this year, and it has taken down plenty of ryegrass in the rough. We continue to sod out the rye and replace it with tall fescue that is much more disease resistant. A few areas in the rough will be seeded but we will be inserting some tall fescue sod where we can and as the budget allows.

Sodding is our best defense against

At 18 acres, our fairway acreage is well below the average of 24 acres. With this in mind, last year we started an initiative of growing in 5,000 square feet of bentgrass up in our nursery to the right of 10. 5,000 square feet of bentgrass from a sod farm costs about $3,000. We will be building all the tees in house, so our pace of construction will depend on how busy we are with keeping the Golf Course in shape for the fall. thus protecting the net better! Tennis players typically back up when they are playing a tough server (or when they feel pressure at the net as well). Obviously it would be foolish to just charge into the court recklessly, but by holding our ground more we cut down on the angles available to our opponents. This “shrinks the court” making it easier for us to cover more territory. Tennis is a “country club sport,” but the more we think like football players, boxers, and goalies the better we will be on the court!

Play on Clay, You Say? CHRIS COZZILLIO [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]

Tennis is played on numerous different surfaces—clay, grass, hard, and even carpet! This makes tennis more interesting than other sports. Each surface suits different players games—for instance, Roger Federer has 8 Wimbledon Championships, which is played on grass, while Rafa Nadal holds 10 French Open titles which is played on clay. The low, fast bounce of the grass suits Federer’s game, while the slower, higher bounce of the clay suits Nadal’s. Now, we are going to focus on just clay for the remainder of this article. Clay is an extremely necessary surface for developing juniors or those trying to move to the next level. Most European players grow up playing on clay, which is why they typically dominate the clay court events. For instance, you have to go all the way back to 1999 for the last time an American won the French open. The great thing about clay is that the

make sure you are making contact with the ball in your preferred strike zone. Again, those faster feet translate to all surfaces! THREE - Point Construction: On a hard court, we can often bail ourselves out of a point by going for a clean winner. The court surface enables the ball to pass by our opponent quickly. However, we can often get enamored with this strategy, causing us to go for winners too often and at the wrong times. The clay forces you to play a more cerebral style--to poke and prod the opponent until they give you an opening. Lucky for all of you, we have clay at Cattail Creek! We are fortunate to be able to train all day on the surface that make us better athletes, better movers, and better players!

skills developed by playing on it translate to the other surfaces. For instance, a clay court specialist is going to perform better on a hard court than a hard court specialist is going to perform on clay (typically). Why is that? ONE - Longer Points: Because claycauses the ball to bounce higher and slower, typically the points will last much longer than they do on a faster hard surface. Playing long points in practice and in matches on clay causes us to hit more consecutive balls in the court, regardless of surface. After all, keeping the ball in the lines more times than the other player is what tennis is all about! TWO - Movement: Moving on clay is tricky business. It can be slippery, and you may even slide from time to time. Also, due to the higher bounces, you have to move quicker and more efficiently to
