If you observe anyone fishing while you are out enjoying a round, do not hesitate to contact either the Golf Shop or myself. The Club is private property and it is also a liability concern if a golf ball injures them. If you are comfortable politely asking the fishing enthusiast to please vacate the property, that is fine as well.

Interest in Craft Beer Continues :

Four New Varieties Added Matt ault [dining room manager]

Membership response to our recently-added craft brews has been amazing, and therefore this month we are excited to announce the addition of four new beverages for your drinking pleasure when visiting The Creek. New on Draft Vanilla Porter, Breckenridge Brewery A surprisingly easy-drinking beer that is quite smooth with a strong vanilla finish. Available in the Restaurant in 12 oz. and 20 oz. glasses.

New in Bottles All available in the Restaurant, Lower Patio, and on the Beverage Cart.

60 Minute IPA, Dogfish Head Brewed and continuously hopped for 60 minutes, this easy-drinking beer delivers a strong, citrusy flavor that IPAs have become famous for in recent years.

Agave Wheat, Breckenridge Brewery At first taste, a drinker will get a traditional wheat ale flavor with citrus overtones, however at the finish the agave nectar comes through in a bit of a surprise.

Crispin Hard Apple Cider Perhaps the most unique of our new additions is Crispin, a small craft cider company, known for creating all-natural hard ciders – all of which are gluten free. Refreshing, not too sweet and a bit of a dry finish all describe this hard cider well. Get in touch with your adventurous side and try these new offerings, we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Caroline Bowman, 26, daughter of Members Rob and Connie Bowman, is starring as the lead role of Eva, in the current US tour of the Tony award-winning production, Evita. Cattail will be taking a bus to the Kennedy Center to see her perform on the tour’s last stop in DC on Friday, October 17 (see page 6 for complete details). Member Chad Barnhill threw out the first pitch at the Orioles game on Saturday, August 9. He was invited to do so as the General Manager of the new Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore. What an awesome opportunity! On August 2, Pool Café Manager Jody Lilley was promoted to a 6th degree black belt in karate by Grandmaster, Takeshi Miyagi, at a celebration ceremony she was attending in Okinawa, Japan. While there, she trained with some of the highest-ranking black belts in the world and she also became the first American woman to receive her teacher’s license from the prestigious Okinawa Shorinryu Karate-Do Association. Jody carried on a family tradition, in that her husband Jim, was the first American to be promoted to black belt by Mr. Miyagi. Way to go Jody!

Our Members and staff members have been doing some pretty cool things! Check it out and give them a high-five next time you see them around the Club.

Members and BFF’s, Danny Gough and Sam Lancelotta, participated in the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland, on August 7 and 8, and caught a whopping 738.5 lb. blue marlin. Nice catch boys!

September Fitness Challenge:

Breaking the Mold John Foelber [fitness director]

This month, there is no advantage to being stronger, faster, more athletic or more coordinated. A higher number of repetitions, heavier weights, further distance, or a faster time will not necessarily guarantee a top-of-the-list finish. This month the only thing that counts is attendance! The Member who completes the most qualified workouts in our Fitness Center during the month of September, wins. Easy as that! What constitutes as a ‘Qualified Workout?’

1. An at-least 30 minute session that incorporates:

a) At least 10 minutes of cardio (treadmill, elliptical, precor, bike, octane trainer). b) At least three strength exercises (strength machines, cables, dumb bells, weight bars, kettle bells, medicine balls). c) At least two stretches.

2. A one-hour Cattail group ‘Boot Camp’ or ‘Strength & Conditioning’ clinic.

3. A personal training session with Kristi Gorey or John Foelber.

You may record up to two workouts per day, as long as they are executed at Cattail. I look forward to seeing you (a lot) this month in the Fitness Center!

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN

[GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]

As we move into September, we hope that our luck continues with the weather. Periodic rains have been timely, and we have dodged most of the bigger thunderstorms that have wreaked havoc on other facilities. It may seem odd to be thankful for the ‘average’ temperatures we received in August, but the Course has greatly benefitted. The

rains

and

cooler

temperatures

allowed us to have an extremely effective fall restoration. With the playing surfaces having deeper roots than normal, we were able to pull out deeper aeration cores and incorporate more sand into the profile. The Golf Course will continue to get firmer and so long as it does not get too cool, too quickly, we should have an unprecedented quantity of roots to kick off the 2015 year.

This is a rule that can be changed by the Golf Committee depending on course conditions. Some courses have changed the rule and adopted it as a local rule. The rule here states that to get relief from an embedded ball it has to be in a closely mown area through the green. Changing it by taking out the ‘closely mown area,’ then includes the rough as well. change made is taking out the closely mown area so it includes the rough as well.

tree-lined fairways, perfect playing conditions, and small greens. The course provides a great test for anyone’s golf game. After finishing nine holes, we had a small weather delay, but did not let that put a downer on our great time. During the delay, we gathered in the clubhouse to converse about it over a beverage among friends. Luckily, we were able to get back out on the course to finish a spectacular day on the truly beautiful course at Fountain Head.

Avoiding Tennis Elbow Woes

ALEX JUSTINIANI [DIRECTOR OF TENNIS]

Tennis elbow is one of the most common injuries in tennis and can often be fixed with a few simple steps. The term describes a condition experienced by over 50% of tennis players, and is caused by overuse of arm, forearm, and hand muscles, resulting in elbow pain. Ease the pain and avoid discomfort with the following tips: Longer follow through

fix. If you like to hit the ball hard but you

Hit the ball earlier & out in front Another technical problem is derived by players getting accustomed to hitting the ball late. For maximum power and comfort, try to hit the ball earlier with a full extension. The later you hit the ball, the weaker your arm will be at the point-of-contact, leading to arm discomfort. Check your strings Your strings also factor in to your comfort level, so it is important to take advantage of the different string types that are designed for different playing styles. If you have discomfort, your racquet should be strung with a lower tension than you are used to. Here are a few examples of string types and comfort level: Polyester Strings Toughest on your arm, but big rewards with power and spin. Not recommended for anyone with arm discomfort. Hybrid Stringing Polyester on the mains, and something softer on the crosses. Mid-range with comfort level. Multifilament Synthetic Gut The best option, and most cost-effective, for any club player.

Slice Slice, Baby! CHRIS COZZILLIO [HEAD TENNIS PROFESSIONAL]

MEMBER-MEMBER TOURNAMENT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3 9:30 AM -12:00 PM

Each match provides opportunities to use many different spins. Topspin and underspin are the most commonly used spins on the tennis court. However, determining when to hit which spin can be a difficult task. If you are more proficient with one spin over another, use that spin most frequently. Remember though that you should be able to hit all spins in order to add more depth to your game.Today’s focus is the ‘underspin,’ or ‘slice.’ Use the slice in these three situations:

Trouble Time

The slice is often most useful when in a pickle. Your opponent has hit a great shot—you are on the dead run and are unable to get underneath the ball to hit topspin. Switch to that continental grip, and slice, slice baby!

$125 per TEAM includes TENNIS LUNCH & PRIZES! CCWTA MEMBERS RECEIVE A 20% DISCOUNT.

Chip & Charge

The slice can be an effective tool to approach to the net. A good slice stays low, forcing your opponent to hit up. Follow that slice into the net, and you could get a great look at an easy volley to close out
