As far as major projects and disruption for the fall, we are finished! Save for the core aeration and topdressing of fairways late in October, our main focus this fall is to increase our Turf Type Tall Fescue population.
The Turf Type Tall Fescue is bred to be more disease, heat, traffic and stress tolerant than the rye and will provide a much more consistent rough to play out of through the season.
Turf Type Tall Fescue will be utilized in the roughs as opposed to the existing ryegrass. The Turf Type Tall Fescue is bred to be more disease, heat, traffic and stress tolerant than the rye and will provide a much more consistent rough to play out of through the season. The fescue’s water demands match up better with the bentgrass fairways which in turn allows for firmer playing surfaces. In addition, the fescue’s growth habit is slightly slower than ryegrass which makes it easier to maintain a consistent 2.5 inches. We will be interseeding and possibly sodding a few areas here and there to help make our rough more consistent and resilient, but overall disruption will be minimal. RICKY’S TIP
RICKY SERRANO [DIRECTOR OF GOLF INSTRUCTION]
Hitting with long irons isn’t as difficult as many golfers believe with the right kind of set-up and swing you will be striking them high and long. First, position the ball forward in your stance, like you would with a three wood, where you can sweep the club head through rather than hit down at the ball like a wedge. Second, swing on the same scale and at the same tempo as you would swing a fairway wood. Third, when you practice, use both techniques with the ball teed on a tee until you build enough confidence in the clubs to play them for real off the ground.

One of the many reasons why players get stuck at a certain level is because they are not willing to invest time into learning new shots. For me as a coach, one of the biggest indicators that a player has invested time into learning proper technique, is when a player has achieved a slice backhand.

This great shot can be used defensively when you are pulled wide, or offensively, as an attacking approach shot. I personally use this shot against big servers as a chip return. Here are a few tips on how to execute the shot: 1. Prepare early by taking the racquet back a little higher than your planned point of contact. (Turn your shoulders) 2. Open the racquet face and set the hand so that the back of your hand is looking up towards the sky. (Using continental grip) 3. Accelerate forward and through the ball with a slightly open racquet face. This will impart the needed backspin, which will keep the ball low and allow you to control the flight of the shot. This shot will definitely take practice, but once you have it you will add better defense and offense to your game all in one shot. Be patient with it and get practicing!

Catching your opponent off guard is one of the greatest feelings in tennis. We all want to make our opponent(s) feel as though they are smothered and just cannot win points against us. I know that seems easier said than done, but with the following tips, you will be all over your opponent like Alex Justiniani on a shrimp salad wrap. ATTACK SECOND SERVES

be to come in behind it to the net— nothing says aggressive like rushing the net! If you hit a quality return of serve, the opponent will frequently feel rushed and play a passive groundstroke, enabling you to polish off the point with a winning volley or overhead. TAKE THE BALL EARLIER
Being aggressive does not necessarily mean hitting the ball hard. One of the most aggressive plays is simply hitting the ball earlier. As soon as the ball bounces on your side, as the ball is rising, make contact at your waist level. By hitting the ball sooner, even if we hit it with
away from an opponent is the ultimate goal. DON’T BE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS
We want to avoid our opponent being able to settle into a rhythm. An effective way to do this is to change the heights and spins of our shots to keep them guessing. Throwing up a topspin lob, even when our opponent is at the baseline, can force them into an uncomfortable and defensive shot, enabling us to take advantage and be aggressive on the next ball. On the flip side, a very low or short shot, like a slice or a drop shot, can force our opponent into a defensive position, giving us the opportunity to attack the next ball. All of these shots will help us be more allaround, aggressive tennis players. Don’t second guess yourself when employing these strategies.
Be aggressive, be
confident, and close in on the net quickly when you have the chance.
