Early golf times on weekends should be reserved for male members. At Cattail, we encourage men, women, and juniors to all play golf whenever they can, including those desirable weekend morning times. Golf is a game of tradition to be played in 9 or 18-hole increments. At Cattail, we say if you only have time for five holes, play the five holes. Time for just two holes before work? Great! Get out and make the very most of your Membership in the ways that best accommodate your unique schedule.
General Manager's Notes Years of Tradition Unhampered by Progress “Change. The mere mention of the word causes people to become anxious, uneasy, nervous, apprehensive and restless. Fear of change and all that accompanies it can become an anchor to an organization and hold it back from growing and developing into a progressive and diverse environment.” – Author Unknown Country clubs over the years have stayed rigid with many of their philosophies, whereas Cattail has looked at the traditions and said, “why not?” Take for example, some of the most common country club rules: Tennis players must wear 90% white on the tennis courts. At Cattail we say no you don’t. Proper tennis shoes are required, but colored tennis apparel is welcomed. Denim should never be permitted at a club. Period. At Cattail, we say if denim makes you more comfortable and gets you to the club more often, then wear denim. All we ask is that it is cleancut and free of rips or tears.
Children should not be seen or heard unless at child-specific events, and they should most certainly be out of the restaurant by 7:00 p.m. (yes, this is a real rule at many clubs). At Cattail, we say bring your entire family to the Club anytime. I think you can see my point in the above examples. Cattail prides itself on progressive thinking and daring to be different from other country clubs and their stance on abiding by ‘how things have been always done.’ We have a vibrant staff, and I like to promote the philosophy with them that there are no bad ideas. If an idea adds value to your experience, improves the service we deliver to you, or has a positive impact on the budget, I encourage my team to present them. This season, we will try many different ways of doing things. Some will work well; some may not. The practices that prove to be effective, we will review and emulate wherever else we can. We will also evaluate what doesn’t work so we can learn from it and improve. I ask that as we go through my inaugural peak season, that you please be patient with us and understand that improved Member service and satisfaction is always our number one goal.

[DINING ROOM MANAGER]
April has been a very exciting, and busy, month for the food and beverage team. In anticipation of the busy season, we have been hard at work revitalizing and refreshing the appearance and inner workings of our dining service areas. To start, and perhaps the most easily noticeable change, are the new dining room chairs. Yes, they have finally arrived! Overall, the feedback has been immensely positive and we hope all of our Members can appreciate the increased comfort, as well as the fresh, new look they give the Restaurant. Also of note in the Restaurant, we have begun to refresh and update our buffet fixtures and decorations. These new fixtures have, and will continue to create, a more appealing and inviting appearance to our theme nights, buffets, and special Club events. Furthermore, we have modernized the serving staff uniform and introduced classier new wine glasses. The month of April also saw the opening of our Lower Patio. Upon your first visit back this year, you will probably notice the new fence and overall layout for service and equipment. We firmly believe that the changes we have made to the layout and operations on the Lower Patio, will significantly improve Member service, as well as efficiency in operation. Many Members have shown excitement over the newly implemented draft beer system on the Lower Patio, which currently offers Stella Artois and Fat Tire, available in our new 16 oz. plastic logo cup. While we are still operating with limited Lower Patio hours just on the weekends, the entire food and beverage team is itching with excitement, and looking forward to opening for full-time regular summer lunch service.

TIPS TO START
THE SEASON NIC FLICKINGER [FIRST ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL] With the weather finally improving and the golf course rolling into great shape, the golf season is finally upon us! Men's Opening Day yielded the highest field on record with 108 golfers, and the CCWGA Leagues are all under way with great numbers too. Additionally, we are starting to see more guest play as the season gets underway, and we ask that you remind your guests of our policies prior to play. My hope is that every round you play at Cattail is an enjoyable one, and here are a few items to think about the next time you tee it up.....
Pace of Play A time of four hours and fifteen minutes is considered acceptable for an 18-hole round at Cattail, no matter the size of the group. Proper pace-of-play ensures that your round and those of your fellow golfers, are enjoyable. Below are a couple of ways that we manage pace-of-play at Cattail: 1. The Golf Staff manages tee-off, turn, and finishing times from the first tee and from the golf course. They will advise accordingly if a group is falling behind. 2. Members are kindly asked to help with the efforts by playing ‘ready golf’ and encouraging their guests to do the same. 3. The Golf Committee supports the Golf Staff’s authority to adjust group orders on the first tee as needed, and to request a group to speed up play when necessary. Your cooperation in these instances is most appreciated.

Starting times and lottery requests can be made via the Cattail Creek website, mobile app, or by contacting the Professional Shop. It is always better to call the Professional Shop to schedule a tee time, rather than sending an email. This is the quickest way to ensure that you receive the tee time that you are after and it is the only way that you can make a tee time on the same day of play. The online tee time system will only allow you to book a tee time two months in advance as well.

Two simple adjustments to the way you practice will result in less wear, and faster recovery, of range tees. 1.) Concentrating divots in one area is arguably the worst practice method because it creates large voids requiring the most time for turf recovery. Scattering divots is a popular practice habit that is frequently encouraged because it does not create large voids in the turf that are slow to recover. It does though, remove the most turf in total because a full divot is taken with every shot. 2.) Practice in a linear pattern by placing each new shot directly behind the previous divot. Leave a strip of live turf at least 4 inches wide between each line of divots. This keeps divots narrow so that lateral growth

Golf Shop News LAUREN BURNS
[Golf Shop Merchandiser]
Whenever I golf, I prefer to walk. Walking is great exercise, it gives me a greater opportunity to get a tan, I can justify eating whatever I’d like afterwards, and it gives me more time to settle down after a bad shot. The key to having an enjoyable time walking is comfortable shoes. Right now in the Professional Shop, we offer ECCO, FootJoy, Adidas, Puma, and Ashworth golf shoes. We also have the ability to special order Nike. The current trend in golf shoes is for them to look more like street shoes. They are spikeless and have the appearance of tennis shoes. These are obviously for play either on a sunny day, or in the afternoon. For men, Ashworth makes a great pair of spikeless shoes, the Cardiff. They are designed to deliver enhanced comfort, functionality, and the performance of a traditional golf shoe with revamped styling and the versatility of a casual shoe. They offer a two-year waterproof warranty and are leather, which really completes any look.
For women, Adidas came out with a completely new style, the ClimaCool Ballerina. It looks like a standard flat, but is for golf! They have ultra-light athletic construction, mesh upper construction, and on and off the course fashion appeal.
Spikes are still necessary in the morning, with dew, and during wet conditions. Some of the most popular shoes for wet conditions are FootJoys. FootJoy Icons offer luxurious calfskin detailing, outstanding waterproof comfort, breathability, and durability. They have memory foam in the tongue and around the collar and Stinger golf spikes that provide superior traction throughout the golf swing.
For women, ECCO has released the ECCO Women’s BIOM Golf Lace. The BIOM is a colorful golf shoe make of Yak leather that has been treated with Hydromax, making them both durable and comfortable. ECCO is known for making comfortable shoes, which has led to them being known as the go-to shoe for those who have had past, or present, foot injuries or issues. With the weather changing and summer around the corner, I hope to see you all out on the Course – hopefully walking!

Don’t Compound Your Mistakes!
RICKY SERRANO
[PGA Director of Instruction]
Compounding mistakes is one of the worst things a golfer can do to his or her score. Once you are in the mindset of “it doesn’t matter anymore,” you might as well stop playing right away. We all see those great recovery shots that professional players make in big tournaments at just the right time. Everyday golfers get frustrated when they are unable to execute recovery shots like those because they don’t consider that the professionals practice those exact recovery shots for hours on end. When you are faced with tough situations, pause and go back to your strengths. The safe option is usually the better one when you are in trouble. For example, when you are faced with a shot from the fairway bunker, it might be a better option to chip the ball out of the bunker and back onto the fairway. These options may not seem as exciting, but your score will benefit in the end. If you take the time to apply your mind to these tips, you will see your score decrease rapidly. The key factors center around concepts rather than actual technique, and you will notice the rewards immediately once you have ingrained them into your game. It may require a little extra effort to stay on track at first as you are shifting to a different approach than you are used to, but once you see the results, you’ll wonder why you haven’t always played this way. 18 CAT TALES NEWSLETTER

GREEN REPORT CHRIS HARRIMAN
[GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT]
Spring has finally graced our presence after an extremely slow start to the growing season. Cold temperatures have deterred an abundance of top growth but rest assured, the turf is shooting down strong roots in order to take on the heat that is sure to come. The Golf Course has just about filled in from aeration, and conditions are on the way to their peak. The rough is hitting its stride but it is still noticeable that some areas are taller than others, and some voids are still present. These areas remain mostly ryegrass. The ryegrass grows quickly in the spring compared to the grass we have been promoting in the rough- turf type tall fescue. This fast growth of the ryegrass is only upward, so the voids from past disease and drought stress remain from years past. The vast majority of renovated or sodded turf type tall fescue rough remains thick, consistent and creates a fair challenge to escape from. Our focus this fall will again be to integrate more tall fescue into our roughs. This will be done through sodding green surrounds, applying round up to areas, re-seeding as well as simple over-seeding to outer lying areas. Speaking of seed, it is easy to notice the ugly seedheads of the Poa annua on our greens. The short game area is the worst culprit, housing each and every seed that is brought in from outside courses. For the most part, we have been able to keep the Golf Course proper sufficiently clean of Poa annua. Throughout the season, we use growth regulators to limit Poa annua movement and germination. In the fall, we use clean bentgrass plugs from the nursery to replace entire Poa plants. The fight against Poa annua will forever be ongoing. In the coming weeks you will start to notice that since the Poa plant has produced a seedhead, using a significant amount of resources, that the plant will start to turn purple and get smaller. This is a product of nature combined with our utilization of growth regulators and working to promote bentgrass over Poa annua. Each spring, our goal is to complete aeration to our bentgrass areas and allow the bentgrass to recover before the Poa annua seeds drop off the plant. This timing greatly reduces our exposure to weed invasion on our greens, tees and fairways.
Cart Rules Reminder The past few years have been amazing in that we have had well over 100 new Golf Members join the Club. We hope to see that trend continue and therefore, I wanted to provide a start-of-the-season reminder on Cattail cart rules that are set by the Green Department and Green Committee to help ensure your safety and the quality of the Golf Course. 1.) Cart traffic is restricted to the path on holes #4, #5, #6, #12 and all of the par 3’s. Architecturally, these holes can not support normal cart traffic and have pinch points that would wear out quickly. 2.) Carts are not permitted in the rough nor in mounded areas. Please focus cart traffic in the fairways. 3.) The small white and black posts indicate the last possible point as to where you should retreat back to the cart path. They do not call for a cart to drive right next to them and make a sharp turn towards the path. 4.) Most importantly, scatter your cart traffic. You are driving on a living plant. By scattering your traffic (not driving in a worn area) you are increasing the chances that a certain area will be consistent with the rest of the Course, and you are also lessening work for the Green Department (thank you!). Finally, each and every Member should be an advocate for the Course! Everyone should be able to follow these parameters and also help communicate them to guests and other Members who may be concentrating more on how to make triple bogey than where to drive their cart.
The Golf Course thanks you!

GRIPS AT CATTAIL CREEK Chris Cozzillio [Head Tennis Professional] This year, your Cattail Tennis Staff has implemented a new initiative called the GRIPS program. Very similar to the different colored belts in karate, the GRIPS program grants children different colored grips for their tennis racquets in accordance with reaching various skill milestones in the sport. This enables children to receive prizes and feel part of something fun, while also gradually improving their tennis game. On April 5, we hosted our 10 & Under GRIPS Launch, and 30 of our Cattail Kids received their very first grip! The GRIPS program is not only for 10 & Under players, and soon there will be a GRIPS launch for the 11-17 year old age group. Cattail Creek Juniors will benefit from the GRIPS program because they will clearly see which areas of their game need work, thus motivating them to get better and reach the next level. Here is how it works: The player gets assessed by a Cattail Tennis Pro. This process only takes about five minutes, and there is no charge for the initial assessment. After the initial assessment, there is a small fee when a player is ready to test for the next grip color. They will undergo a series of small challenges and will be placed in a group based on their scores. The challenges include tennis abilities, physical abilities, and general knowledge about our sport. The player will notice that each grip gets progressively harder to attain, ending with the black grip, which is equal to the level of a high-level collegiate player. We hope that implementing this system will encourage the kids to fall in love with the sport, have fun, and become exceptional tennis players!
