Justin is the epitome of a loyal employee and demonstrated this best during the summer of 2013 when the Club was in between General Managers and Clubhouse Managers. He worked opening and closing shifts seven days a week as the only manager in the Clubhouse for over a month. At the same time, he maintained a smile on his face and a positive attitude to keep his staff’s morale up during a period of significant transition that occurred in our busiest months of the year.

The season of giving is upon us. With all of the holiday parties and shopping, it is easy to forget the importance of giving to others during the cold winter months. Cattail has made it easy to do good deeds this season:

Lynn Slupski, Membership Director, belongs to the Maryland SPCA Urbanites, a group of young professionals who participate in incentives to help homeless pets at the shelter. The Urbanites are hosting small-scale pet food drives at their places of work this season to benefit the Kibble Connection, a partnership with Meals on Wheels that delivers homebound people their meals along with food for their pets. We were especially moved when Dr. Hruban sat with us and shared details of his staff’s many efforts, from gene sequencing of familial pancreatic cancer to a three-year-effort targeting the disease in one lab mouse. You often hear people state what the holidays mean to them. Although some answers overlap, it really does vary from one individual to the next. Being in the golf business, my job often requires me to work a lot of holidays. The month of December includes Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve and while the Golf Course remains relatively quiet with colder temperatures and snow, the Golf Shop remains quite active with shopping and sales.
Happy holidays! Thanksgiving has come and gone, and we hope everyone had a safe and fulfilling holiday. While the weather gets colder, there are still great reasons to visit the Club. We are fully stocked in the Golf Shop for all your shopping and gift giving needs. Our Golf Shop hours are now: Tuesday – Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. In the Golf Shop, our “Wheel of Fun Sale” will run from December 9 – 21. When you bring your selections to the counter, you will have a chance to spin the wheel for additional savings and a variety of additional prizes. HOW TO BEAT COLD WEATHER
ELI MIRELES [ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL]
If you’re one of those golfers who is willing to venture outdoors when it’s cold and windy, here are a few tips for extending golf into the winter season. Before You Hit the Course: Of course any discussion about playing in cold weather has to mention apparel. The keys to dressing warm and staying dry? Layers and fabric. Here is a simple cheat-sheet even the most fashion-impaired can follow: ✔ When choosing socks, pick a pair that are a decent length. I prefer wearing compression socks — they’re great for keeping your calves warm and help with reducing lactic acid buildup in your legs the following day. ✔ Except when it’s mild out, I strongly advise wearing a base layer consisting of a compression shirt and pants. ✔ For shirts, any type of technical fabric that wicks is fine. Some golfers enjoy wearing shirts that sport a heavier weave in winter such as pima cotton or a poly-cotton blend. In terms of pants, you’ll need pair that are waterproof and windproof for lousy weather. ✔ Keep it simple with sweaters; stick to classic colors and silhouettes that can be worn on and off the course. Try a lightweight knitwear made from performance wool fabrics that don’t get in the way of your golf swing. LAUREN BURNS [GOLF SHOP MERCHANDISER] In the golf industry, the majority of 2015 spring/summer orders are placed and in. So, I already know what the Professional Shop will be stocked with through June of 2015. Scheduling multiple brands to come in throughout the beginning of the season requires planning in regards to ship dates, color story, and size runs. You always want to make sure you have the right amount of sizes while not having the same colors from multiple brands in at the same time. The men’s line that I am most excited about is Peter Millar. They have three great colors stories featuring bright colors, think Jelly Belly candy canes, and are really going outside the box in terms of patterns and contrast trims. As always, they have another great lineup of cotton shorts colors (18 different colors) and performance shorts colors (12 different colors), and those are just the solids! They also came out with a new woven, which I have never seen before. This woven is a performance stretch woven made for mobility and comfort, easy care, and breathability. For the ladies, there will be one new company that we will be trying out, JoFit. JoFit was created by women and made just for women, so they know how to make you all look your best while still killing it on the golf course. The company has been around since 2006 and since I saw their line last year
at the PGA Show, I have been impressed. JoFit does run about a size big, so if you are usually a medium, be sure to take a small into the fitting room as well. JoFit will also be offered in the Tennis Shop, so ladies who golf and play tennis will be able to mix and match their outfits seamlessly!

Another trend for the ladies that we will now offer in the Professional Shop will be golf dresses. I know the idea of wearing a dress out on the course seems ludicrous, but the few ladies I have seen do so at Cattail have come back with glowing reviews! Out of all the brands we offer, I have been most impressed with Nike’s dresses. They come with detachable knit shorts and are Dri-FIT to wick sweat away and help keep you dry and comfortable. I am looking forward to another great year and further developing concept of what you all like to purchase in the Professional Shop!
