WELCOME It’s with much excitement and enthusiasm that we invite you to our first “New Edition” Bull Sale. We’re excited to have been able to add the Anderson and Family Hereford operation to ours. It is a natural fit. Floyd was responsible for us getting in the purebred operation some 32 years ago. Our first Hereford cow 46K was a gift from Floyd. He taught me much of what I know today about cattle and how to market them. From 1979-1983, I was his herdsman. We then, went to Fort Macleod and bought our own place where Floyd continued to tutor us for several years. The Anderson’s have always put the commercial cattleman first and their cow herd represents that. Much of the bloodlines in their herd are the same as ours especially, over the last couple of years and we have both used a lot of the same Herd bulls. Our emphasis the last 10 years has been carcass and getting Hereford cattle that will grade for the packing plant and still be able to maintain a functional cow herd. We believe Grant & Annette Hirsche in ultra sound and have over 25 years of data behind these cattle. Darryl and Floyd have also used this technique to enhance their program. We’re also pleased to announce our partnership with a company that is going to help expand our meat shop and move our cattle program ahead. We’re in the process of sourcing a packing plant and will be able to ship natural beef locally and over seas. We are working to join alliances with many of our commercial cattlemen that use our bulls. We will then, purchase their calves back for our retail meat operation. There are many good Hereford cattle in the country, but many have different areas of emphasis than we do. We know our cattle fit the demands of our meat shop better than any and we need these genetics to come back from our bull customers to our meat shop, so we in turn can offer them to our consumers. We will have more details sale day. Once again we thank our many customers and friends for their support and help over these last few years. We look forward to working with all of our old customers and many new ones. We’re committed to maintaining the Anderson program similar to the way Darryl has and only sell his top bulls in this sale. NOT one of his bulls have been sold or taken off the top. Only the top 40% of the bulls are offer for sale. We feel this is by far the best over all group of bulls we have ever been able to assemble at one sale. Without a doubt, one of the most powerful bulls in the entire industry. His show record was second to none winning the Canadian National 2 years in a row. This is the full brother to Upstream’s famous “Nitro” bull. We’re really excited to own a share in this guy with Upstream Ranches. He is one of Neon’s greatest sons and he’s smoothed polled and has 100% eye pigmentation. Napoleon 7101 is proving to be one of the great breeding bulls we have used. With his pedigree, it is not surprising, since his sire is the great Neon, and grandsire Online. He is breeding as much pigment and well marked calves as any bull we’re using.

Owned by Rocking G Land and Cattle. A half brother to Neon and out of a “Mac” daughter. It is no wonder this bull shows as much muscling as any we have raised. Sold at the Calgary 2006 Bull Sale for $12,500 to Rocking G and in 2007 was named Grand Champion Bull at Bonanza for Lexi Girodat. He then went on to be named Grand Champion Bull that fall after servicing cows in 2 herds. He is siring some of our top carcass calves with great hair coats. 71S has produced a strong set of calves every year. He puts everything together, he is long, heavy muscled, solid marked with 100% pigment, his dam is an outstanding cow with a near perfect of udder and out of a top cow family. He is at the top of the breed with his Performance and carcass numbers and his own indexes were just as strong. He had a weaning index of 121, yearling index of 135, a rib eye index of 118, and marbling index of 150. Best of all he passes these traits on. His sons have been high selling feature bulls for several years and are working in several top purebred herds across North America and his daughters were all we hoped they would be. The high selling bull at the Calgary Bull Sale the year we bought him. TWISTER is a rugged, heavy muscled bull with good bone and legs, a strong top, deep side and strong quarter. The progeny will be an asset to our breeding program and to the breed as a whole. His progeny are true to his pedigree type. The females look exceptional, they are easy doing yet feminine like his dam and grandma the first ones calved last year and several bought in top calves. The sons are masculine and have that Herd Sire look. As a group they ultrasound well for REA and Marbling. Several sons were features and sold very well in last years sale selling to Purebred and Commercial Breeders alike. This year’s group is perhaps even stronger. 39S proved to be a strong breeding bull. His sons have gone on to make a mark in the cow herds they are working in. His daughters are going to be a big part of our cow herd for years to come, they are very much like his dam, moderate in size with nice tight udders and rich milk. His milk EPD has continued to climb as we have more daughters in production. He combines moderate birth weights with strong performance, extra hair and easy fleshing ability and his progeny have ultra sounded well for carcass traits. “Maxi” 28M was one of the First Polled bulls we ever used. In 2004, we thought he was the best polled bull at Agribition and we bought a semen share and used him a lot. He has truly curve bending EPD’s and performance. A goggle eyed 121M son we retained to use on heifers. After four calf crops, he is in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease and the top 1% for birth weight. Not only do his calves start lighter and come out easy, but they really perform and grow well above average and they ultrasound very well for carcass traits. We calved his first daughters this spring and they show great potential and have near perfect udders like his dam. We’ve started to use him on some of the cows. A 105T son was the 2nd high selling bull in last year’s sale selling to Van Newkirk Herefords. We also used two 105T sons on our own replacement heifers this past year and they sell as Lots 94Y and 236Y.

102W was a former sale Feature and high selling calf in our sale when he sold to Ridder Ranch in Nebraska. We kept an in herd semen interest and have used him for two years. The sons in this sale are from the first group and they are a strong set of bulls especially Feature Lot 49Y. The 102W progeny carry the same classy stamp as the 71S cattle and most carry extra pigment. His dam has been one of our best cows and comes from a cow family that has produced more Herd Sires for our own use than any other cow family on the ranch. She is also the dam to our 37S Herd Sire that we’ve used successfully for several years.

98W was a former sale feature purchased by Eric Lawrence at Maple Creek. We used him on a few heifers on the strength of the cow family behind him. Four of the five sons we had made the sale cut and all are out of first calf heifers.

We looked long and hard before we found the 157K son we wanted to put into our program. 58U was one of the thickest 157K sons we’ve seen and was one of the easiest fleshing bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch. 58U will consistently lower birth weights and worked real well on heifers. His first daughters calved and are good milking. One of his sons topped the sale last year selling to Upstream Ranch.

A Simple Guide to EPD’s
Understanding the EPD Table
EPD’s are only one of several tools that can assist you in finding the bull that will best meet your needs and help you reach your long term production goals. EPD’s do not indicate how many pounds will be added to a herd’s average by using a particular bull. Only the differences among bulls is relevant. For example if you have been using a Hereford bull with the breed average Birth Weight EPD of +3.6 and you buy a bull with a birth weight EPD of +7.6 how much will you birth weight increase? The answer … “who knows?” Theoretically he would have the genetics to add 4 pounds to your birth weights, so if your calves were averaging 80lbs they could average 84lbs. This assumes both bulls were used on the same cows, (a percentage of birth weight is determined by the cow’s genetics) and all other variables such as weather, the type or amount of feed available remained the same. If you have been using a bull with a breed average weaning EPD of +45 and your new bull has a weaning EPD of +60, on the same group of cows the new bull should have the genetics to add 15lbs to the average weaning weight should all the other environmental conditions be equal. If you wish to take advantage of EPD’s it is important to know which traits are most advantageous to your herd and your projected market and to be aware of the EPD’s for the bulls you are using to compare them to the bulls you plan to purchase. Remember only the difference between the EPD’s is relevant. Another consideration is a bull’s EPD’s can, and usually will, change as more information is added, especially if his progeny are analyzed. These changes take place twice a year as the Association conducts genetic evaluations. We would remind you, that while these EPD’s can be used to compare Herefords across North America, they can not be used as a reference between breeds. A thought from Darryl on calving ease. Birth weight or Birth Weight EPD is not necessarily the same calving ease as several other factors such as a cow’s pelvic area or calf shape and length, even nutrition and exercise can influence calving ease. Single trait selection for low birth weight and birth weight EPD’s for the bulls to use on your main cowherd may also lead to lower weaning and yearling weights over time as most lower birth weight bulls have lower performance.
