Artist Spotlight Steve Devenyns

Devenyns Limited Editions 1435 Southfork Road, Cody, WY 82414 307-587-6867 |www.stevedevenyns.com Steve Devenyns is one of the finest western and wildlife artists painting today. That fact is a testimony of his talent, diligence and destiny. From decisions he has made, to those made for him, his life has culminated into the stories told in his paintings. Devenyns was born with the talent to visualize and create. However, his direction did not merge with his talent until an automobile accident allowed him the opportunity to focus on his God given ability. During a nine month recuperation period in 1974, the artist began unfolding and discovering the layers of his creativity. Steve’s bareback and saddlebronc riding, as well as his pre-veterinary studies at CSU were put aside and the pursuit of his artistic talent began. It continues today. His dedication to quality and perfection has lead to a successful career as a self taught artist. His work today is a reflection of the input and friendship of several well known artists that have helped and supported Steve throughout his career. Ray Swanson, Robert Tommey, Jim Wilcox, Tucker Smith and John Kittelson have all had a tremendous influence in Steve’s work. Raised in Colorado, Devenyns has always enjoyed wildlife, the west and open spaces. As a boy, his love for livestock and horses put him in a saddle or near a rodeo. The lifestyle Steve enjoys today that takes him to the places that he paints. He is a horseman and outdoorsman that enjoys time in the mountains or with rancher friends working livestock. Devenyns is selective of the West that he paints. His story of the West is told in episodes that reveal moments he knows to be true from personal experience. “I prefer to paint the cowboys of today, the ones I’ve worked with on horseback. Their work isn’t always glamorous, but they are fortunate in so many ways. It’s a life they love, and you can’t pry them out of the saddle. I want to capture on canvas what they feel and see, as well as their independence and dedication. ”No extravagant, wreck a minute, action-packed scenes, but simple, pure stories are found in a Devenyns painting. One reason he paints contemporary life is to prove that the openness and the chance for freedom still exists... if you want it bad enough. Steve Devenyns lives with his wife, Karen, on the Southfork of the Shoshone River near Cody, Wyoming. He continues to pursue his fine art career and now publishes limited edition prints of selected paintings. He is represented by Big Horn Galleries in Cody Wy and Tubac Arizona, and Cogswell Gallery in Vail Co and is proud to now offer his western paintings and prints on the internet as well as in galleries. Recognitions: Over the years Devenyns has been a “featured artist” and his work has graced the covers of many prestigious art publications, including Art of the West, Southwest Art, Inform Art, U.S. Art, and Western Horseman. Recently his paintings have been featured on Beef, Nebraska Cattleman, New Mexico Stockman Journal and Sooper Looper. He has received numerous awards including the purchase of his painting “Happy Hour” for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. His paintings have been featured several times as the Artist of the Quarter program for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation In 1997, Steve was chosen Artist of the Year for that organization. His painting “Fringe Benefits” was the RMEF Anniversary Print and Stamp and was an immediate sellout. Steve is a 3 time Gold Medal winner at the George Phippen Memorial Art Show in Prescott Arizona, The Foundation for North American Sheep named Steve “Artist of the Year” in 2002 and in 2005 he was the featured painter at the Bradford Brinton Museum. His painting “The Spirit of Wyoming” won the People’s Choice Award at the 2006 Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming . Devenyns has talent, vision and the diligence to make his dreams reality. Art Talk Magazine once described Devenyns as “a major talent in the use of oil paint to depict the life of the West.” In 2010, Devenyns was awarded the prestigious Red Smith Artist’s Choice Award at the National Museum of Wildlife Art “Western Visions” Art Show in Jackson Wy. His work can be found in the Qwest for the West Art Show at the Eiteljorg Museum Show in Indianapolis IN, the Prix de West Show at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City, the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody Wyoming and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Governor’s Show in Cheyenne, as well as the Bradford Brinton Museum Show in Sheridan and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson WY.

2011 Featured Clinician Van Hargis has been called one of today’s most versatile horsemen, a designation that reflects a lifetime devoted to learning—and communicating—the elements of superior horsemanship as applied in a variety of disciplines. More than just a clinician who talks about horsemanship, Van is a true horseman whose clinic and seminar presentations are born out of real-world experience working with and learning from horses. Van started riding horses when he was only four years old and launched his career as a trainer at twelve when the wife of world-renowned saddle maker Billy Cook hired him to train her horse. He spent much of his youth in the saddle, working cattle at ranches around his Texas home. At the same time Van was honing his skills as a trainer and competitor, taking both his own and his clients’ horses into the show ring and the rodeo arena. Van and the horses he’s trained have excelled in show and rodeo events like western pleasure, trail classes, calf roping, team roping, and steer wrestling. Van’s wide-ranging experiences with horses taught him valuable lessons about horses in particular and life in general. His genuine interest in people motivated him to share those lessons with others. He began developing his unique horsemanship seminars in 1991 while he was living in New Zealand. In 1992, Van returned to Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he established his own training facility, specializing in coltstarting and ranch horse versatility. From his Texas home base, he has since traveled extensively. Van’s practical experiences on the ranch and in competition, coupled with a dynamic speaking ability, have made him one of the most highly requested clinicians at equestrian facilities and events across the country. He moves easily across the “great divide” between the western and English riding worlds, and has worked successfully with horses from many disciplines, including both working ranch horses and show horses in western pleasure, hunter-jumper, and dressage. In horsemanship and in life, Van firmly believes there’s “nothing but the basics,” and that those basics are the same no matter what equestrian discipline appeals to you. That message has attracted audiences throughout the United States as Van has shared it in his seminars, in radio and television interviews, and in articles that have appeared in regional and national print publications Van is passionate about communication as well as horsemanship, and his versatility as a speaker enables him to deliver an exciting, educational, and motivational program to audiences regardless of venue or topic. With relaxed humor, Van teaches practical horsemanship skills that audience members can take home and put to immediate use, using his interactions with the horse to emphasize the most fundamental lesson: the need for a solid foundation in horse training and in everyday life. From colt-starting clinics to ranch roping demonstrations, from lessons on fear, trust, and confidence to seminars on ranch horse versatility, Van tailors his presentations to the audience’s needs and communicates his practical methods and messages in a way that lets each participant leave the event entertained, educated, and inspired.

Van’s Clinic Schedule If It Ain’t Broke, Fix It with Van Hargis Tuesday, October 18 5:00 – 7:30 PM Working with the Problem Horse

Wednesday, October 19 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM Starting on the Trail to Success- First Time Under Saddle A horse only gets one first start under saddle. In this demonstration Van helps on untrained colt accept blanket, saddle, and rider for the first time. You may have seen “round pen” demonstrations before but Van uses this time to take you far beyond just the horse. He encourages us to take a long, honest and objective look at ourselves on this journey of paralleling horsemanship and human-ship. Van cleverly uses stories and analogies to educate, motivate, inspire and entertain us as he demonstrates training from the horse’s perspective. This presentation truly links horsemanship with human-ship as Van quietly and calmly teaches us and the young horse the skills and confidence to succeed. The Journey Continues Beyond the First Few Rides In these next presentations Van Hargis will demonstrate and discuss the Absolute Basic Criteria of horsemanship by focusing on his simple philosophy of Nothing Beyond the Basics. 1:30 – 3:00 PM Understanding Horse Talk This presentation is all about communication. Here Van helps us “read” horse’s movements and gestures. The horse’s language may seem complicated to most because its simplicity is too often misunderstood. Van is an expert at reading a horse and at teaching others how to interpret “horse talk”. Van also teaches us how to use our minds, body, and movement to communicate to our horses in ways they can understand. 3:30 – 4:30 PM Basic Posture-Be a Rider Rather than a Passenger Our posture in the saddle has a direct impact on our horse’s performance. In this presentation Van teaches us proper posture from where to place our hands, feet and seat. Van will demonstrate good posture, teach you good posture and indicate how it relates to both your health and your horse’s performance.

Thursday, October 20 12:00 – 2:00 PM Addressing Any Problem by Reducing to the Ridiculous If you’ve experienced horses that are head shy, ear shy, or fearful of water or creek crossings Van will teach us how to overcome these issues. This presentation teaches us to simplify things from the horse’s perspective. Things that may seem miniscule to us may be really disconcerting to our horses. Van’s stepby- step approach to solving problems helps us overcome adversity and look at problems as opportunities to become better horsemen and develop more confident horses. 2:30 – 4:00 PM Understanding Collection, Flexion, and Suppleness What is collection? Collection seems to be one of the most frequently used buzz words in horsemanship. How many of us really understand collection and its benefits toward our horse’s performance? Van will not only help you grasp the definition of collection but will explain its purpose and how to achieve it. Most importantly Van will demonstrate how it enhances and improves your horse’s carriage in every aspect of riding. Whether you trail ride or compete professionally your horse needs and deserves a rider who learns how to achieve collection. 44th Annual NILE • October 19-22, 2011

The NILE Gold Buckle Select Horse Sales are conducted and managed by a committee whose members have a variety of experience in the equine industry. The mission is to hold sales where breeders, trainers, and exhibitors can market high-quality horses to buyers from all over the United States and Canada. A few have even been sold to foreign countries. The sale horses have been selected by the sale committee and screened by Jeff Peila, DVM just prior to the sale. Every effort is made to sell only the top quality horses out of those consigned. The Horse Sale Committee feels that with Lynn Weishaar, auctioneer, John Johnson handling the pedigrees, and the crew of professional ringmen, every consignor has optimum opportunity to sell his/her horse for the highest dollar on that given day. A special thanks should be given to the Horse Sale Committee, Ward, Lynn, John, the ring crew and the NILE staff for all the hard work that goes into making these sales so successful. 44th Annual NILE • October 19-22, 2011

Sale Terms & Conditions Sale Management acts as mediator only. Although NILE does a pre-sale screening with a veterinarian, NILE makes no guarantee, either written or verbal. All horses (with no stated guarantees) sell “as is” with any and all responsibilities and guarantees strictly between the buyer and the seller. Each horse on which there are two or more bids will be sold to highest bidder. Auctioneer settles disputes and his decision is final. Announcements from the block take precedence over printed and other announcements. Every effort has been made to assure catalog correctness, but NILE assumes no liability for errors or omissions or for statements, verbal or written, regarding horse(s) sold. Catalog comments are provided by seller. Payment terms of the sale are cashiers check, certified check, travelers check, or personal check, with picture ID, and/or any bank letter of guarantee, in U.S. funds only, payable within 1/2 hour after sale. Sorry, no credit cards. There is a $30.00 charge per returned check. Any collection costs (and attorney’s fees) shall be paid by the buyer. Upon payment, cashier will issue a delivery order which must be in buyer’s possession to leave grounds. Buyer pays brand inspection fee. Certificate of Registration and transfer will be mailed to the buyer. All horses will be sold in accordance with Montana auction laws. Title passes to the purchaser at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, at which time the purchaser assumes the responsibility for risk of injury and liability of horse. Any injury or loss of said horse(s) or change in horse’s condition occuring after the fall of the hammer, but before making final settlement or taking final delivery as set forth herein, shall not be grounds for recision of the sale. The purchaser or his agent may take care, custody and/or control of the horse immediately at fall of the hammer, but such taking shall not constitute delivery of the horse. Delivery shall be made only after the purchaser presents himself to NILE cashier and pays purchase price in full. Purchasers who make final settlement shall be tendered delivery in the form of a “release” for the horse, which allows purchaser or his agent to obtain a brand inspection to remove horse from grounds. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The sellers, NILE Sale Management, directors, staff, membership, sponsors, and volunteers, as well as MetraPark and Yellowstone County, assume no reponsibility, legal or otherwise, for any and all liabilities for loss, damage, theft, death or injury to livestock, persons, or property.

This filly has the right disposition for a youth project. All the foals out of this mare have been soft minded. And yet you can do whatever you want. “WHISKEY” is a quality filly that will be sure to chase a cow and look good doing it. She is sweet and kind with great bone. WHISKEY is halter broke and super gentle. This mare could easily be a great 4-H project, superior ranch horse, or even a star broodmare down the road. She will sure catch your eye with that golden palomino color! We have had incredible success with this cross. This filly currently has a full sister making a successful career as a reined cow horse in Sweden and a full brother earning his keep as a solid ranch horse in Divide, MT.

This is the horse that put us in the “horse business.” “Bartlett” is good to catch and handle - a real sweetheart. She is the mother to my stallion, so I have to breed her out; that is my only reason for selling her. Her 2011 & 2012 breedings are to Raren to Dash who is by a world champion racehorse & his dam is a daughter of Dash For Cash. He is also a 3x PRCA Barrel Racing Circuit Finalist & a money earner in team roping. This mare is bred for a 4/10/12 foal. She is UTD on Vac & wormings including West NIle. A very classy mare.

“Tucker” is a great all around gelding. Not a mean bone in his body and a very willing attitude. Easy to shoe, worm, vet, stands tied, loads in the trailer easily and quiet to handle. Dips his head for the halter or bridle and will stand quietly while being mounted. He is a very people friendly horse and we would call him safe for the family. Rides great out in the hills. Used to gather cattle, has drug some calves and for general riding in the mountains. Rides the same even after a layoff. He is 100% sound. Videos are on youtube at sbar9quarterhorses. Zan Silver Doc is a grandson of the world famous Zan Parr Bar. “Doc” stands 15.1 hands and weighs approximately 1150 pounds. He is a flashy gray gelding that is super athletic. His conformation is solid, along with good feet. This gelding has spent many days on the ranch working cattle. He will go all day and give you everything he’s got. This is one broke horse that is very fun to ride in and out of the arena. I have been heeling off this horse and he is very well on his way to making a super nice performance horse. Hauls, clips and shoes nicely. Guaranteed sound.

If you are looking for a barrel horse prospect, you have found her. “Jill” has been brought along slow and is ready to go on. Nate Hould has been using her for all the ranch chores and she is proving herself to be a horse with limitless potential. Very light in the face and sides, big mover and athletic, big stop and nice rate. Will go anywhere you point her, no matter how rough, and do it all day. Oh, yeah, and she has Leo and Driftwood Ike on her papers. Cant go wrong there. For more info, call Nate at 670-6015.

Y Super talented mare that has been successfully campaigned this season at the barrel futuries by Brenda Seely. She is a 1d/2d horse that has been to jackpots and rodeos. Handles all types of ground, and is used to distractions. Runs poles, has started breakaway roping and will be phenomenal with more training. Started her career off with a great reining foundation in the LCCC horsemanship program. Has the potential to do anything you want and is young enough to do it for a long time. Very quick and sensitive, so would be appropriate for an intermediate to advanced rider.

Chrome, big hip, refined and broke... “Kiss” has it all! She has a solid start on barrels and is ready to start being hauled. We have also started team roping on her and she is showing great potential as a head horse. She has been used to rope and doctor yearlings, move cattle and has been roped on in the branding pen. This classy mare has good bone, eye appeal and is gentle - qualities we all look for in a good mare. See updated video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVcok1TnUd8 or call 307-921-2100.

This is a super-sweet 2-yr-old. He is gentle enough for anyone to ride. He is very classy looking - he would stand out in the horse show ring. If you want a pretty horse for the ranch, not afraid of cows, don’t let this guy get away. He will take you in any direction you want to go. Watch for him in the futurity.

Y If you’re looking for a super horse, look no further. “Murphy” is the real deal! Perfect size, willing attitude and you won’t show him anything he hasn’t seen before on the ranch, in the arena, or out on the trails. he has done it all. “Murphy” is quiet and trustworthy enough for the kids or company, but handy enough to get a job done. Rides the same everytime and is the first to meet you at the gate. His friendly, outgoing way is enough to make anybody fall in love with this cute little horse.

Y “Brute” is 14 hands, solid & well-built. Gentle with excellent ground manners, always ready to go even if it’s just with a halter and bare back. He stands quietly for bathing, clipping, shoeing. In 2008 he was the $800 Rider year-end Champion Buckle winner, placed in Novice Horse and in the Never Won A Buckle class with the MCHA. He has gone on many trail rides & cattle drives, crosses water, logs, and handles any obstacles without hesitation. Placed in the RMBA Ranch Horse Competition and RMBA Stallion Stakes. Check him out at www.krazycreekranch.com.

I bought this horse from Walt Brindley at the 04 NILE. A very versatile horse that has seen it all. Used him alot working cattle starting colts & packing & riding in the wilderness. Been shown in reining, western pleasure, trail and working cow. My grandaughter started riding him late in his 2-yr-old year, she was 7, and has ridden him ever since. In the last 2 years she has won 2 grand championships, 3 reserves and in July won 2nd place money on him at a RMBA ranch horse competition. Dam and sire are proven barrel, cutting and halter horses. This is a big, stout, gentle, horse who has never taken a lame step.

“Steel” is started with about 120 days of riding and is going great. He has been ridden out in the hills & we have dragged a tire on him and he handles a rope well. We have done alot of ground work: tarps, lifting his feet, trailer loading, tying etc. He is hobble broke, stands quiet while being mounted and rides off with no desire to buck or hump, not even the very first ride. He is big enough to make a fantastic head horse, athletic enough to be an excellent ranch horse and gentle enough to be your favorite trail horse. This cute, well built 2-year-old mare is going to make a nice ranch horse with the potential to be a calf or heel horse down the road. She has been used extensively on the ranch and will hunt a cow. Just an overall nice mare that has been started right and is ready to go on with.

This is Molly, Supreme Killobar. She has been started on barrels and poles and isn’t far from being finished on either one. Molly has also been started as a calf horse and works the rope well. She’s also worked cattle, been headed on (turned 35 steers), and drug calves to the branding fire. She’s soft in the face and moves off a leg real well. She has tons of endurance, is easy to catch, shoe, load, and bathe. Molly should work fine for an intermediate + rider.

“Dooley” is a solid young ranch gelding raised in big country and used on a cattle ranch to do all the chores. He is real handy at the end of a rope. Been used to doctor cows, heifers and bulls. Been to many brandings and tag calves. Wonderful to use while working the alley and doing any sorting. Very cowy and great horse to have on the ranch or just take him out in the hills for a nice trail ride. He is honest and has no holes. Watch youtube at sbar9quarterhorses for his videos.
