Isa Beefmasters, LLC - 63rd Beefmaster Bull Sale

Page 1

Thanks for joining us for Isa Beefmasters 63rd Performance Test and Bull Sale!

I look at a lot of sale catalogs from all breeds, and I’m very proud to say ours is one of the most complete, concise, and easy to use in the bull business. The off-test weight and scrotal circumference measurements were taken September 10th, so they are current, as is the gain (ADG) and weight-per-day of-age (WDA) data.

The bulls are listed in the order they will sell, and they will be penned in that same order. The pen number is listed at the top of the page. We take great pains to present the data and the bulls in this format so that our customers can easily identify, research, and buy the category of bulls needed.

We are pleased to share with you our breakthrough index we call $Isa. $Isa quantifies a bull’s individual performance and his genetic potential. We think you’ll find that, as you evaluate the bulls using your usual system, $Isa will align nicely with your analysis. You can read more about $Isa on p. 4.

For the first time ever, we will feature three Red Angus bulls. We are beginning an experiment with Beefmaster x Red Angus hybrids. We bought a set of top bred heifers from Halfmann Red Angus, and these are the bull calves of those females. You’ll find them in Pen 8.

We have invested a lot in artificial insemination and embryo transfer in recent years, and that effort really paid off with 26 sons of great herd sires like L Bar Automatic, D’Elite, Escalade, L Bar 4519, L Bar Momentum, L Bar Tejas, and L Bar Resource.

The bulls really turned the crank this year, with two-thirds of them gaining over 4 pounds per day through the 50-day gain test. Thirty of them gained over 5 pounds! As always, you’ll find a wealth of breed-leading EPDs.

The bulls are backed by a complete health program, have been Trich and fertility-tested and are fully guaranteed. Volume purchases will be delivered for free. They also have been DNA’d for parentage and Genomic Enhanced EPDs, and that information will be in the final catalog.

Our family is honored to provide bulls to many of the finest people in the cattle industry. We thank you for coming and look forward to a visit.

Warmly, The Lasaters

The Isa Beefmasters Bull Performance Test

The Isa Beefmasters Performance Test and Sale is one of the largest in the Beefmaster industry and unique in many ways. The bulls offered each year represent the top end of all calves weaned. Not a single bull has been topped off! You can buy the absolute best we know how to produce.

This is the 63rd group of bulls that have been tested in this format. The data we provide, combined with careful appraisal, has proven to be an extremely accurate way to select performance-packed bulls in all price ranges.

At weaning, the bulls are brought together from the various ranches and spend the first twelve months of the Isa Performance Test under range conditions, growing the frame and developing athleticism so critical to the bull’s performance in difficult environments. You can see how they performed during this phase in the Grass ADG data. We then finish with a 50-day Gain Test on a low-energy ration, which is scientifically designed to show genetic differences in gainability without getting the bulls fat or soft. Our customers from all parts of the world will tell you that these bulls hold up when you get them home.

We feel our sale format is the most user-friendly in the industry. We sell two age groups, coming-twos and two-year-old bulls, in roughly descending order of quality. The bulls are penned and cataloged in sale order, which means that the buyer can target the area of the sale corresponding to their budget without jumping from page to page in the catalog. We handpick the first 40 bulls as suitable for use in registered herds.

As the sale progresses, the price goes down, which means a volume buyer can “average down” during the event. The bulls are excellent quality throughout the sale, so you only have to mark off those that do not suit your needs, and then let your target average price determine which bulls you buy. The biggest mistake buyers make is not starting to buy early in the sale and not selecting enough bulls from

which to buy. Be sure to look at the bulls from the bottom up.

All the data in the catalog is gathered by Isa Beefmasters, and each set of measurements is taken in a one-day period. This enables all the bulls to have an equal chance to show their potential. We believe that the grass and feed gains, weight-per-day-of-age, carcass sonogram and scrotal measurements within each peer group are key. We have paid for over 10,000 carcass scans.

We believe that the age of the dam is very important and is basic to our selection process. An outstanding son of a 2- or 3-year-old dam shows exceptional potential. Every cow in our herd has a calf every single year from the time she turns two, so the outstanding son of an older cow carries longevity in his genes, one of the most important economic traits.

We have made a heavy investment in DNA testing to both establish pedigrees, but also to increase the accuracy of our EPDs through Genomically Enhanced EPDs. This enables us to track the bull’s performance while still putting selection pressure on libido and fertility by using multiple sire breeding. Multiple-sire breeding and requiring heifers to calve at 24 months sets Lasater genetics apart from all other cattle families.

All of the bulls have a complete health background, are Trich and fertility-tested and ready for service. And they are backed by the Isa guarantee; while others say their bulls are guaranteed, we back it up.

The proof of the validity of the Isa Beefmasters Performance Test lies in the great semen bulls that have come out of this program: L Bar 5502, L Bar 0324, Automatic, Essential, En Fuego, Escalade, Habanero, Momentum and L Bar 4519.

We are very proud to sell top quality, tough, well grown-out bulls in a user-friendly environment to professional cattlemen. Thank you for being here!

accurate Sire Selection through Isa’s unique data set

We are excited to share with you the Isa Index, or $Isa! $Isa quantifies a bull’s individual performance and his genetic potential. It takes in 24 data points we believe are critical to balanced cattle selection using the Six Essentials and synthesizes them into a single number.

We have used what we called “The Score” for many years to evaluate the bulls and put them in sale order. Previously we did not publish this number, but it has become apparent as we have added more and

more data points (over 50 in this catalog) that we need a way to distill this ocean of performance data into a single, useful index to help speed up the evaluation process.

$Isa uses a proprietary weighted formula to achieve what we believe is the optimum balance of growth, production efficiency, fertility and carcass value. We think you’ll find that as you evaluate the bulls using your usual system, $Isa will align nicely with your analysis.

EPD and Performance category descriptions

Calving Ease Direct (CE): Higher calving ease direct scores represent more unassisted births and are therefore considered superior.

Birth Weight (BW): The lower the birth weight EPD of a sire the lighter is the expected birth weight of his progeny.

205-day (Weaning) Weight (WW): Indicates likely genetic differences between sires in the growth of their progeny to weaning.

365-day (Yearling) Weight (YW): The 365-day weight EPDs indicate likely genetic differences between sires in progeny growth potential through to market age.

Milk: Sires with above average 205-day Milk EPDs are therefore expected to sire daughters with above average milking potential.

Calving Ease Maternal (MCE): the percent unassisted births a daughter will have over the population average. Again, a higher number represents fewer unassisted births.

Scrotal Size (SC): Increased scrotal size is associated with increased fertility in male progeny and with earlier age at puberty of male and female progeny.

Stayability (STAY): the probability a female would be reported as calving in the herd at age 5 or greater. A higher number is more favorable.

Age at First Calf (AFC): The difference between a cow’s birthdate and the birthdate of her first calf. A lower number is more favorable, indicating a female that will calve at a younger age.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI):

Measures feed efficiency.

RFI is the difference between an animal’s actual intake and expected intake based on size and growth on a feed test.

Rib Eye Area (REA): Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same age than will sires with lower EPDs.

Intramuscular Fat Percent (MARB): Intramuscular fat percent (IMF%) or marbling of beef.

Terminal Index ($T): Expressed in dollars and designed for retained-ownership cattlemen interested in fast-growing, high-performing steers that will be graded on carcass merit by packers.

Maternal Index ($M): Expressed in dollars and designed for ranchers focused on maternal criteria. It accounts for growth, milk production and fertility and considers cow maintenance issues.

Feed Efficiency Index ($FE): Expressed in dollars, it blends feed efficiency (from RFI EPD) and post-weaning growth, which is the growth from weaning to yearling.

REA%: the area of the ribeye expressed in square inches, which is an indicator of muscling. Ratioed within peer group.

IMF%: Percentage of intramuscular fat. Ranks the peer group for potential for marbling.

Grass ADG%: Gain on grass between weaning and test. Ratioed within peer group.

ADG%: Average daily gain ratio of feed test. Ratioed within peer group.

WDA%: Weight per day of age. The off-test weight divided by the bull’s age in days. Ratioed within peer group.
