Welcome to the 2011 NILE
A message from Jay Nansel, NILE President
As President of the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE), I take this opportunity to welcome you to the 45th Annual NILE Stock Show & Rodeo. Our staff, board of directors, members, and volunteers have worked hard to bring you five days and nights of quality stock shows and entertainment. The many events at the NILE are kicked off with the Stock Show featuring a wide variety of cattle shows and sales. The Expo Building will be full of cattle all week long, please come and view the breed of your choice, they’re all there! Other livestock events featured at the NILE are the Jr. Fed Show and Sale of Champions. I encourage you to come out and support the youth of our region. There is also the Club Calf Prospect Show and Sale where 4-H and FFA steer and heifer projects get their start. Our Livestock Judging Contest brings teams from all over the region. In addition, nearly 2,000 fourth graders from Billings and the surrounding communities will be introduced to agriculture through an educational program presented at the NILE. For the horse enthusiasts out there, watch for the annual Gold Buckle Weaning and Yearling Sale and Performance Horse Sale. They don’t get any better than this. On the grounds you will be able to purchase tickets for the NILE Filly Raffle and attend horse clinics. The evenings will feature the Rodeos! Starting with the NILE Ranch Rodeo Finals. This event continues to grow as one of our very popular events. If you haven’t attended it before, I encourage you to do so as you will not be disappointed! Then we will have three nights of exciting PRCA Rodeo. This rodeo will feature some of the best stock in the country and the best rodeo contestants. The rodeo committee takes pride in running a quality and time efficient event that you will enjoy. While on the event grounds, please stop by the Trade Show Booths. They represent the latest quality products and service available in the industry today. There are booths for every interest so check them all out. Once you have taken in the NILE and find yourself as excited as I am, we would love to have you as a NILE member. Please talk to myself or any of the NILE staff or members. We would be glad to discuss your membership options. As we move beyond the NILE fall show, please watch for other NILE sponsored events. In February, we work hard to bring you the region’s biggest and best tradeshow; the MATE. Then in April, the popular Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event comes to town again. I look forward to seeing past NILE participants and meeting those coming for the first time. Welcome again and enjoy the 45th Annual NILE Stock Show and Rodeo.

A message from Justin Mills, NILE General Manager
It is a pleasure to welcome you to be a part of the NILE Stock Show & Rodeo! This year you will experience new and exciting events as we take pride in promoting the regions number one industry. Each year we work to make the show better for our exhibitors. We realize that at the core of this event are those that come to display and compete with their livestock or showcase their businesses. We appreciate your consideration in our collaboration to make this one of the region’s premier events. We continue with our four-day schedule this year realizing that as people continue to become busier, we need to accommodate their schedules. This means the schedule brings many events and activities together at the same time, in which we believe, will bring more people to the grounds. Some minor changes for the Stock Show included stalling all breeding cattle in the Expo Center and moving the Jr. Fed livestock into the Montana Pavilion. The Jr. Fed exhibitors will again show on Wednesday with the Sale of Champions on Thursday at 5pm. I would encourage businesses that believe in our youth and the importance of agriculture to come and support our Jr. Fed exhibitors at the Sale as this provides an extremely rewarding experience. The NILE Gold Buckle Horse Sales and Futurities continue to grow. The sales have been exceptionally successful the last several years and we credit the popularity and growth of the futurities, with the fact that we have outstanding consignments. When it comes to rodeo in Montana, no one does it better than the NILE. This year we will again be providing one night of Ranch Rodeo and three nights of ProRodeo. The NILE Ranch Rodeo Finals will feature the winning teams from across the region as they compete for both the NILE Championship and a spot in the WRCA World Finals in Amarillo, TX. The NILE ProRodeo will host the “CatGriz | Griz-Cat” Rodeo Shoot-Out at the Thursday performance, followed by Tough Enough To Wear Pink presented by St. Vincent Healthcare on Friday, and Wrangler Patriot Night on Saturday. The Western Expo always provides a wide range of commercial exhibits from clothing, saddle & tack, and home décor to livestock equipment and much more. Included is the Cowboy Code Stage featuring free daily entertainment. New this year is the “Young Guns Zone” located in the small bay of the Montana Pavilion with muttin’ bustin’ held twice, to dummy goat roping, stick horse rodeo and more. Finally, I would be remiss to not point out the following events that are extremely important to our future. Like the 4th Grader Ag Education program, where over 2,000 students are given the opportunity to learn about where their food comes from as well as the the Jr. Livestock Shows and Merit Heifer Program. Good luck to all participating in contests, events, and shows!

Artist Spotlight Karen Boylan Karen Boylan Fine Art
9447 Gant Road | Bozeman, MT 59718 (406) 586-1564 |www.kboylanart.com Karen Boylan describes her art as a passion. She constantly finds herself drifting away from the reality of life and concentrating on how light affects objects, the contrasts in colors, and the infinite detail of everything from grass, rocks, and leaves to the vastness of the landscapes around her. “It’s an obsession, really.” She has always had a fascination with nature and animals; their shape, color, texture, and most of all, their beauty. Her passion began at an early age, especially her fascination with horses. Her life has always revolved around these beautiful animals, competing in gymkhanas (games on horseback), horse shows, and rodeos, and they are an essential part of the ranch work she does today. Since graduating from Montana State University, Karen has ranched with her husband, Doug, in the Beartooth Mountains of Red Lodge, and the Gallatin Valley of Bozeman, Montana. She recognizes the importance of painting familiar subjects and draws from her experience as a rancher to create the details paintings that have brought her recognition through numerous awards. Attention to detail is the most important aspect of her work. Although she has worked in gouache, acrylic, pencil and scratchboard, Karen has been concentrating mainly on oils. Traveling throughout the country, she participates in the show such as the Ellensburg National Art Show & Auction, Ellensburg, Washington; the C.M. Russell Show, Great Falls, Montana, the Northern International Livestock Exposition, Billings, Montana, and the NFR Cowboy Christmas Show & Sale in Las Vegas, Nevada. Karen continues ranching today, drawing inspiration from the beautiful surroundings in which she lives. Her paintings are created out of admiration and respect for the Western style of life and the animals she works with. There is a fine balance between ranch work and creating art. Whether calving, branding, doctoring or just moving cattle she loves what she does and relishes the physical challenge as well as the mental change that gives freshness and new life to her paintings.

2012 Horse & Cattle Demos Stock Dog Demonstrations by Tim Feddes Tim Feddes and his brother raise registered Hereford cattle near Manhattan, Montana. The Feddes family has been raising registered herefords since the 1950’s. They have been using stock dogs in their operation for about 25 years. The dogs assist in gathering, moving, and sorting cattle-saving labor costs. The purpose of the clinic will be to show how they take a dog’s bred-in ability and use that ability to assist them in livestock handling. Clinic will show the dogs work on a group of sheep.
Low-stress Cattle Handling with Ed and David Fryer and Montana Beef Quality Assurance Ed and David Fryer, a father-son team, volunteer to teach ranchers and the public about proper cattle handling techniques through a program called Beef Quality Assurance (BQA). BQA training sessions are held throughout the year in various locations around the state. The focus of Ed and Davids’ teaching is low-stress cattle handling techniques and why careful cattle care is important. Together they manage the Castle Mountain Ranch in White Sulphur Srings, Montana. Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) is a national program that provides guidelines for beef cattle production and is enacted through directors in each state. The program raises consumer confidence through offering proper management techniques and a commitment to quality within every segment of the beef industry. Producers have embraced BQA because it is the right thing to do; but they have also gained through increased profitability. As an educating program, BQA helps producers identify management processes that can be improved.

2012 Horse & Cattle Demos Bridleless Horse Demonstrations Jacqueline has shown and trained Arabians, Quarter horses and Pony of Americas for 45 years. She started giving lessons and training at the age of 10. Her first clinic was with Tom Dorrance! Jacque qualified for the Pony of Americas World Championships show for 10 years in a row, and has qualified for the Montana Youth Quarter Horse Regional finals. She has also received numerous All-Around and High-Point awards in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Idaho. One of Pat Parellis students named Aimee Brimhall inspired all of his students to preform to music like she was at the Open Houses back in the 90s. Since then it has gone viral with people like Stacy Westfall preforming her famous reining pattern bareback and bridleless. Jacque realized how much people love to see horse demonstrations to music with little to no aids. Since 2003 she has created a equine choreography business called EquineDance. com. She has preformed all over the northwest with her horse Angel. Jacque currently has 45 students currently working with her learning to create and preform demonstrations to music with little to no aids. She will have 4 of her students preforming with her at the Nile. Jacque is certified in Parelli Foundation Colt Starting, specializing in Liberty, Bridleless, and Freestyle riding. She also offers Western Dressage and Natural Horsemanship lessons at Standing Rock Ranch in Billings, MT.

The NILE Gold Buckle Select Horse Sales are conducted and managed by a committee whose members have a variety of experience in the equine industry. The mission is to hold sales where breeders, trainers, and exhibitors can market high-quality horses to buyers from all over the United States and Canada. A few have even been sold to foreign countries. The sale horses have been selected by the sale committee and screened by Jeff Peila, DVM just prior to the sale. Every effort is made to sell only the top quality horses out of those consigned. The Horse Sale Committee feels that with Lynn Weishaar, auctioneer, John Johnson handling the pedigrees, and the crew of professional ringmen, every consignor has optimum opportunity to sell his/her horse for the highest dollar on that given day. A special thanks should be given to the Horse Sale Committee, Ward, Lynn, John, the ring crew and the NILE staff for all the hard work that goes into making these sales so successful. 16

Sale Terms & Conditions Sale Management acts as mediator only. Although NILE does a pre-sale screening with a veterinarian, NILE makes no guarantee, either written or verbal. All horses (with no stated guarantees) sell “as is” with any and all responsibilities and guarantees strictly between the buyer and the seller. Each horse on which there are two or more bids will be sold to highest bidder. Auctioneer settles disputes and his decision is final. Announcements from the block take precedence over printed and other announcements. Every effort has been made to assure catalog correctness, but NILE assumes no liability for errors or omissions or for statements, verbal or written, regarding horse(s) sold. Catalog comments are provided by seller. Payment terms of the sale are cashiers check, certified check, travelers check, or personal check, with picture ID, and/or any bank letter of guarantee, in U.S. funds only, payable within 1/2 hour after sale. Sorry, no credit cards. There is a $30.00 charge per returned check. Any collection costs (and attorney’s fees) shall be paid by the buyer. Upon payment, cashier will issue a delivery order which must be in buyer’s possession to leave grounds. Buyer pays brand inspection fee. Certificate of Registration and transfer will be mailed to the buyer. All horses will be sold in accordance with Montana auction laws. Title passes to the purchaser at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, at which time the purchaser assumes the responsibility for risk of injury and liability of horse. Any injury or loss of said horse(s) or change in horse’s condition occuring after the fall of the hammer, but before making final settlement or taking final delivery as set forth herein, shall not be grounds for recision of the sale. The purchaser or his agent may take care, custody and/or control of the horse immediately at fall of the hammer, but such taking shall not constitute delivery of the horse. Delivery shall be made only after the purchaser presents himself to NILE cashier and pays purchase price in full. Purchasers who make final settlement shall be tendered delivery in the form of a “release” for the horse, which allows purchaser or his agent to obtain a brand inspection to remove horse from grounds. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The sellers, NILE Sale Management, directors, staff, membership, sponsors, and volunteers, as well as MetraPark and Yellowstone County, assume no reponsibility, legal or otherwise, for any and all liabilities for loss, damage, theft, death or injury to livestock, persons, or property.

Cooper is one outstanding gelding, gentle enough for an experienced 6 year old to a seasoned 90 year young rancher, with no buck. Cooper is ready for any direction, drag calves, heel steers, and make the big circle. Cooper shoes, clips and hauls like a seasoned veteran. At 5 years old he is 15.2 - 1250 lbs and has gas when needed, with the looks of a show horse and experience of a seasoned ranch gelding. Take him home and enjoy him for the next 20 years.

Can you say GORGEOUS? Here is a strawberry roan that stands 15.3 and weighs in at 1200 pounds. This horse is BEAUTIFUL! Along with his great looks, his personality is equally impressive. “Hercules” is as gentle as they come. He is the kind that can have extensive time off and will saddle up every time. This is a top notch ranch and rope horse with loads of cow and versatility. We heel off of him, drag calves to the fire, use him as a trail horse, and even packed on him. This horse is sure footed, light in the bridle, works off leg pressure, and is very willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Like his name indicates, this horse has no white on him, black feet all around. This is a big, stout, ranch gelding. He has done all the ranch chores, he has been roped on outside and started heading. He is durable and would make a good jackpot head horse. He is good to catch, load and shoe and gets along well with other horses. He is a horse that can cover the miles if you need to. A good walker, he goes where you point him. He will be roped on in the preview. One owner.

Barrel racers and ropers take notice. This young gentleman is bred to run, built right, and has a great mind. He is a 2-year-old gelding by Midnight Corona out of an own daughter of Special Leader. He has been a “problem free” horse since the day he was born. Always willing and sensible, he is riding nice and has no bad habits. He grew up “outside” and can look after himself. He has been around kids, cattle, dogs and geese, runs out with a big band of horses and settles right down to learning when worked with. He’ll have 30+ rides by sale time. This is a nice young gelding with a ton of potential.

He is very, very, very, gentle and a people lover. Good in the hills, he likes to work cows with a heart as big as a mountain, he is bred to death and cute too. “Gypsy” has a solid foundation. She can go in any direction, starting to really work nice in barrels and is very light. Has run indoor and outdoor some. She has been hauled and eats and drinks on the road well. This mare is not your average horse, she is super pretty with a huge hind end and shoulder. Ben Reynalds had her for over 7 months. She has been taken slow and is going to get better and better on the barrels and poles. She would also make an excellent breakaway, heel or calf horse. Gentle and has absolutely no buck guaranteed!

A 1d/2d horse with limited hauling and won money at every level. Bred as a barrel horse, it comes easy for her. She has been ridden by my daughter and myself in both the barrels and poles (21 sec). Great at the gate, handles bad ground like a pro, will go any speed you choose. She has the temperament for a junior rodeo horse or the skills to be a serious competitor. She has a very uptight round style that is 4 wheel drive, rarely hits a barrel. Started on cattle and been ridden outside. A solid 5-year-old gelding who’s done it all; dragged calves to the fire, been ridden by women and kids. He is super soft in the face and moves well off leg pressure. He will bridle up, go out and lope a pretty reining pattern complete with sliding stop and rollbacks then go and head steers. Dynamite scores cattle like a rock and runs to the hip very well. Dynamite will leave on your hand and rates. This is the type of head horse that will take you to the big rodeos. Put three superstars on the top side of his pedigree, fill the bottom side with Hancock and you have the makings of a great horse.

Flashy, quiet, 15.1, 3-year-old Mare. Fun and safe for anyone to ride. She handles trails nicely- in the lead, back, or by herself. A spectacular mover, she’s had a rope thrown off of her, wrangles horses, moves cows, crosses water and ditches, stands tied, is good for the shoer, clips, loads, and is easy to handle. She has the speed and the pedigree to do well in the arena and the mind to be a nice riding or ranch horse. Well-bred, would be a nice addition to a breeding program. The sky is the limit with her.

Melanie is a nice ranch horse. One owner, gentle, good to shoe, load and gets along well with other horses. She has done all the ranch chores and has a great running walk. This mare will really watch a cow, would make a good team penner. She is a smaller horse and has been ridden quite a bit by my daughters and their inexperienced friends. She is not quite a kids’ horse but a child that could ride a little should get along fine. She has been doctored on outside and started heeling. Melanie is straight from John Scott Ranch genetics on both sides. Will be heeled on in the preview.

A big, laid back ranch gelding, that rides pretty doggone gentle. He will go as fast or as slow as you want and is really good to doctor outside on, drag calves to the fire, flag colts, etc. Good foot and bone. In his younger days, his tongue was cut, but it doesn’t affect how he reins, handles or keeps. Had a lot of different levels of riders use him. See him on YouTube Jack Blankenship channel.

Rocky is a super well-built 14.3hh, with rare red dun roan color, and a super smart mind; which makes the perfect top notch young gelding. He has been used out on the ranch to gather and sort, and has dragged calves to the fire. He has been used in the arena to carry flags, pick up broncs, team penning, ranch sorting. He has a ton of athletic ability and speed. Rocky rides correct, soft in the bridle, smooth lope, good stop, and turn around. This nice mare has been Gary’s “go to” horse for the last several years. She’s pulled a lot of calves to the branding fire, sorted a lot of cattle outside, and is strong from the horn. This mare is a half sister on the maternal side to Keaton Schaffer’s calf horse “Sox”. She has been here on the ranch her whole life and she will be dependable for you every day the rest of her life.

Hooey is a 15hh, beautiful, put-together buckskin mare who is super broke to ride. She is light in the mouth, broke in the bridle, rides between the reins, has a great one hand neck rein, spins, slide stops, side passes and knows her leads. Hooey has been ridden outside and is quiet on the trail, will work a cow, and knows a rope. She is started on barrels, is being hauled all summer to local rodeos, and is great in the poles. Hooey runs a great reining pattern, will make a great all around using horse that is ready to go any direction, do any job and look good doing it.

Shorty is a jam up, pro caliber heel horse. She has been my #1 heel horse the last three years and have won many buckles and checks along the way. Shorty rates steers really well and will not miss the corner. This mare will fit a #3 roper up to a pro wanting to haul her to pro rodeos. She also has the breeding to be a great producer after she is done in the arena. She is a great granddaughter of Poco Bueno. She is quiet in the box and is guaranteed sound.

Super eye-catching, athletic, and gentle finished head horse. “Poco” is kind and personable with a very willing attitude. He has been hauled and won on in the open level all the way down to the lower numbered ropings. Scores like a rock with a nice flat powerful break across the line, along with loads of cow sense and tremendous speed with a big finish. This gelding has the ticket to take you to the pay window every time he loads into the trailer. Super broke in the bridle and very responsive off your leg. Not only is he a blast to ride in the arena, he is a top notch ranch gelding as well.

Big gentle ranch gelding that has been used in all aspects of ranch work. He runs to cattle, drags calves from either side, has a nice walk, steps out and travels.
