All bulls that are in good breeding condition at the beginning of the first breeding season are guaranteed breeders. This does not include any injury. Any bull that settles one third or more of the healthy cows he services or passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during the first six months after the sale date is considered a good breeder. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made within six months of sale date. All bulls returned must be in good and healthy condition. Any bulls given a fertility test within the first six months after the sale date will be at the buyer’s expense. All bulls are guaranteed to be breeders, however, no guarantee is given that the semen collected from a bull will freeze.

WHAT IS OSTEOPETROSIS?

Osteopetrosis, also known as Marble Bone, is a genetic defect that causes abnormalities to the development of the bone marrow cavity and brain, ultimately causing death.

WHAT IS THE INHERITANCE PATTERN OF OSTEOPETROSIS?

The inheritance pattern of Osteopetrosis is typical of most bovine genetic defects, both parents must transmit one Osteopetrosis affected gene to the offspring in order for Osteopetrosis to be expressed. A carrier will pass on the OS gene to their offspring 50% of the time. In the unlikely case a carrier is mated to another carrier, 25% of the time the offspring will receive the OS causing gene from both parents - thus allowing for the expression of OS (dead calf). The only time OS is expressed is when the calf inherits an OS causing gene from both parents. All known pedigree carriers have been tested.

You add that up on a load of 600-pound steers, and you made an extra $2,500 just by being our customer. Compare that to our sale average the last couple years - that’s a free bull. How can you go wrong? Here is how it works: First you must be a Gill Red Angus customer. At marketing time, contact Gill Red Angus with the marketing option you wish to pursue: •Complete Retained Ownership •Partial/Partnership Retained Ownership •Livestock Auction or Off-the-Farm Marketing - Sell 100% of your calves off-the-farm or at the stockyards and a Gill staff member will be there to place a bid on them for you. •Replacement Heifer Marketing - Market your top-quality open and bred heifers through our annual production sales in February. Last February, Bob called us and told us he would like to purchase the absolute best heifers we could find for him for the purpose to breed and sell as bred heifers. So we went to looking and purchased the heifers from Sand Willow Red Angus from Waubay, SD, George Schaeffer from Selfridge, ND and the Metzinger Ranch from Ft. Pierre, SD. These heifers sold as high as anything last spring, as quite a few people wanted them. These were the only heifers we bid on for Bob, as the cost was second and quality was first for him. He AI’d them and then turned in Gill Red Angus calving ease bulls. On December 30, at Burwell Livestock, Bob sold the AI bred heifers at auction and they sold for $2,100 each. The heifers in this sale are all the bull bred heifers. The only heifers in this group that are not from a Gill Red Angus customer is a small package he purchased from Miller Red Angus out of Nebraska. The Miller heifers are registered heifers, but they are selling as commercial. Again, the quality of this set of bred heifers is as good as you will find anywhere in the country! If you need some heifers, make sure you take a look at these girls. The bred heifers will sell first sale day, and they are available for viewing at the Kenny Gill Feedlot just south of Gill Red Angus.

100 Open Replacement Heifers Every year we sell some of our customers replacement heifers. Since the start of this, we have been selling a group from Dean Tarter of Camp Crook, SD and Lee Hofland from Reeder, ND. Last year we began selling a small group from Tracy Collins from Prairie City, SD as well. This year all three have consigned heifers again. This summer I was at the Tracy Collins ranch and Dean Tarter’s ranch and saw their momma cows and their bred heifers, and in the past we have been at Lee Hofland’s ranch. I was very impressed with the quality of these cattle on grass. The cows these heifers come from are good ranch type cows. These cattle run in big country for South and North Dakota and they are far from pampered. They work for the rancher instead of the other way around and stay in good condition without the extra feed. On Dec. 13 the Hofland heifers weighed around 650 lbs. All three ranches tell me the heifers will be weighing close to 750 lbs by sale day. The heifers will sell by the head, and will sell following the bred heifers, and before the bulls.

Here is a true herd sire prospect. Lot 1’s sire was born in 2005 and I believe this guy is one of the most powerful sons to date. Red Dawg has sired the Lot 1 bull four out of the last 5 sales and the one sale where he didn’t sire Lot 1, he did sire Lot 2. He is proven to be a muscle sire, who adds length, style, and eye appeal. Check out this guys birth to weaning spread. We really thought about keeping this bull. He has everything a seedstock breeder needs in his herdsires. His depth if body is awesome, muscle is above average, great eye appeal, very sound, and has that dark cherry color we all love. His dam is a great cow who goes back to New Trend 22D, Make Mimi, and Monu 4X. She has a 100 MPPA while Maximizer’s dam has a 110 MPPA. This is a great bull and really needs some attention!

Here is another really good numbered bull with great weights and a top notch pedigree. His dam is out of the top Maiden cow line, which is also the same cow line that lot 3 is out of. If you want a bull that cover all the basis on the pasture and to the plate, this is the guy for you as he is out of a great cow family, has super performance, and has a 127 ratio for marbling! What more could you want?

Wow, here is another bull who came the right size and weaned off at nearly 800 lbs!!! That is money in the bank! The daughters will be keepers as well, since this guys dam has a 109 MPPA, while Vin Diesel’s dam is the great Roxie 1080 cow. The Roxie cow line is one of our all time best, as we have flushed her dam, her daughter, and her, while we have used 2 sons of hers. This guy is a stud and knows it. Come get this herd sire!

This guys dam is a top Red Dawg daughter who is slowly moving to the top of the herd. This guy is her second calf, while her first one was used as a yearling by us, and then sold last spring to Dan and Tara Hooper from Nebraska as one of the top sellers of the sale. They just love him as he is extremely easy keeping! She now has a 108 MPPA and is getting higher every year. I predict her to be in our donor pen in a couple years. We thought long and hard about keeping him, but decided to keep an interest instead, as we will probably AI to him. Check out the EPDs on this guy. He will do you a lot of good!

He covers all the bases, as his dam’s cow family is one of the very best for soundness, productivity, longevity, fleshability, and udder structure. His sire has given us more muscle and length than any other bull we have ever used. So when we combined the two we had great hopes, and then it worked. He is very impressive to look at, and his calves are doing what we had hoped. The jury is still out on his daughters as we will calve his first daughters this spring, but we are confident they will be good.

This good calving ease bull came in a little light. He was suffering from pneumonia early in the summer. By time weaning came, he was over it, but was set back do to it. He really caught up over the winter and on grass. Don’t let the weight bother you, because if he wasn’t sick over the summer, he would be in the mid seven weights. Put him on some heifers and forget about him.

Coming off grass last fall, this guy was one of the more impressive bulls weaned and he hasn’t looked back since. He is a big stout bull with a lot of length and muscle. She is a big bodied, very easy fleshing cow who knows how to produce a top calf. Here is a very powerful, big bodied bull who has all the right parts. He will cover alot of cows without any trouble. We do recommend him as terminal use only, as he is a carrier of Osteopetrosis. But if you market all your calves and buy females back, this guy will work just fine for you. For a while this winter, he was the highest gaining bull, as he was gaining over 5 lbs a day. His feeder steers will be in demand with that type of gain ability.

Lot 126 is a very interesting calf by pedigree and very impressive in person. He is one of those calves you always see when you walk in the pen. What, a white calf??? That’s right! This guy is 50% Red Angus and 50% Charlais. There is quite the story behind this guy. I will give you the short version. We flushed LMG Roxie 1080 to Red Dawg a few years ago, little did we know that the semen company mixed up Red Dawg and the Charlais sire, TR Fire Water semen and didn’t let us know. (There are a few other white calves running around out there, and a few red ones in the Charlais world). Anyway, we decided since this guy was pretty darn good, and out of a couple really good parents, we would keep him as a bull and see if anyone would want him. His Charlais grand sire is LT Wyoming Wind, who Lindscov Thiel used real hard for several years. His dam is also the cow that raised Vin Diesel. OK, this guy has a happy little story to him. We could never find him at weaning. We saw him in early September but then he disappeared. After looking, we discovered his dam wasn’t around either. So then we knew he didn’t just die somewhere. Finally we found him and his mother on Dec. 23, 2 months after we weaned the other bull calves. He was a pretty big old calf, so we figured we would put him in the sale, he will be a little greener than the others, but he is a real good bull. Someone will get a buy, as he will most likely sell under his value since he isn’t quite as shined up as the other bull calves. Come check him out.

This is one of the youngest bulls in the sale, but don’t hold that against him as he will catch up by breeding time.

Boy did we mess up, this guy is a one of the best bulls to sell here, and here we have him 3rd from the end. He is extremely deep made, very classy, really long bodied, and extra thick quartered and wide topped. I really don’t see much of a hole in him. He is flat out good! His dam is a super cow as she is a Brown Vacation daughter that goes back to the good Stalburn Kindle bull. His dam and grand dam both have a 101 MPPA while his great grand dam has a 105 MPPA. In fact, I have to go back 6 generations on the dam’s cow family to find one that is under 100 MPPA. His sire is the good 5L Direct Fire son that Feddes raised and sold to Andras and Montvue. His pedigree is full of greats like Norseman King, Future Direction, Blockana, and Red Lightning. This is a herd sire prospect that needs your attention.

Gill Red Angus Mobridge Livestock 'First Ever Red Angus Only Calf Sale' brings in nearly 4,000 head Amanda Radke - Tri-State Livestock News The “First Ever Red Angus Only Calf Sale” was held Oct. 25 at the Mobridge (SD) Livestock Auction. Bryan Gill, Gill Red Angus, who also serves on the commercial marketing committee for the Red Angus Association of America, seized the opportunity to work with Mobridge Livestock and market his preferred breed. Their joint efforts brought together a set of feeder calves and bred heifers that represented the largest single-offering of Red Angus-influenced genetics across the country. “Over the years it has been obvious that the calf market in South Dakota and Nebraska is stronger than most anywhere else in the country, while the market at Mobridge Livestock is as strong or stronger than anywhere else as well, especially with Red Angus calves,” Gill said. Gill Red Angus worked closely with Mobridge Livestock to get Red Angus cattle consigned to the sale, which totaled just under 4,000 head on sale day. “The whole idea was to gain more attention to the high-quality Red Angus calves in this area. Mobridge Livestock deserves a lot of attention and credit for holding this sale as they have always been willing to go the extra mile to help us and our customers out. They are true promoters of the breed,” Gill said. Promoting the breed is second nature to Gill, who uses Facebook and other media outlets to alert commercial cattlemen about both the breed and his own operation, located near Timber Lake, SD. Find them online at www.gillredangus. com. “We work hard all year long promoting the Red Angus breed, as it wasn’t that long ago that the red hides seemed to be discounted compared to their black brothers, and they still are in other areas of the country,” admitted Gill. “In our area, the demand is extremely strong for Red Angus, especially Red Angus replacement heifers. We are in a small pocket where several of the commercial ranches in this area breed Red Angus bulls to Red Angus cows, and because of this, the demand for the heifers in our area has gotten national attention,” he continued. “By holding this sale, we hoped to gather more feeders together who want to feed Red Angussired calves, and it did just that, as we had several feeders and buyers contact us before the sale who don’t normally purchase out of Mobridge Livestock. Several of these feeders either showed up or left orders and purchased some high-quality steers and heifers at a premium. I truly think this sale will do good things for the breed.” The promotional effort and the size of the offering at the First Ever Red Angus Only Calf Sale paid off. “This was the absolute best set of cattle I have ever seen sell at one place; they were just nice, big red cattle for sure,” reported Craig Collett, who manages a 10,000-head feedlot near Flagler, CO. “When it comes to selling your cattle at the top, developing a good reputation for having topquality cattle and having everything done to them is very important,” Gill said. “Developing this reputation is not easy and takes several years to get it done, but when you earn this reputation, it definitely pays off. “We actually get phone calls from potential buyers asking about specific ranch’s cattle. This is something you earn by having your good cattle at auction in front of buyers year after year. We hope to make this sale an annual event, and I believe it will only get more popular as we go. As the word spreads that this is a great place to purchase top-quality Red Angus calves, the interest and demand will only get stronger. Within 150 miles of Mobridge, you can find nearly 1,500 head of Red Angus breeding bulls for sale annually. There are lots of Red Angus calves available in this area each fall.” The buzz is all about Red Angus cattle this week, and Mobridge Livestock was a one-stop-shop for high-quality feeder calves and breeding stock.
