2011 has been a year of unbelievable change in all sectors of the beef business with a lot of factors weighing in on our industry. Some producers have experienced ruin from the extended drought in the southern states, primarily Texas, yet other cattlemen have been blessed with oceans of grass, historical gains and financial bliss. I’m told that the US beef cattle herd has shrunk to its lowest level since the 1950s. Marketings of America’s she stock due to the drought, and the high commercial value of cull cows and replacement prospects is likely to blame. On the other side of the supply/demand picture is the realization that beef exports (due largely to big increases in purchases to Russia, Japan and South Korea) are up 30% from 2010. It appears to me that if we are going to ration beef to consumers in the future then the highest quality beef will prevail. In a recent announcement, Walmart has decided to carry choice beef in its coolers. I think this is one signal is indicative of a very large movement suggesting that the quality beef movement is alive and well. Already, the choice/select spread has moved to a lofty $17/cwt with addition premiums available for CAB and Prime. These days, producers are routinely rewarded or discounted for attributes that include, but are not limited to, marbling and cutability. Gone are the days of commodity beef. Heterosis will take second place to predictability. Value differentials now exist that link a modern day beef producer’s genetic decisions to his sustainability. Luckily our American Angus Association has given us the tools to measure, compare, select, cull and reproduce the valuable traits that will move us in the right direction. Today we can use EPDs and $value indexes to make informed decisions that will help us make huge strides in reproductive efficiency, calving ease, pre-weaning performance, feedlot gain, feed efficiency and harvest premiums. As always, the National Western Foundation Female Sale is a showcase of the individual accomplishments of America’s most aggressive Angus pioneers. This year’s offering is a continuation of that long standing tradition. It has been the privilege of the dedicated staff at Conover Auction Service to catalog and document the important contribution these females and embryos can and will make to your bottom line.
