Welcome to Redd Ranches The day this catalog is delivered to you, we are busy preparing for your visit on April 13, 2013, tagging the bull calves for the 2014 sale and planning the genetic makeup of the 2015 Bull Sale. Diane is ordering food and making assignments. The corrals are being mucked out and 800 first calf heifers are moving out to make room for the Sale Bulls. The cowboys on the range are recording birth info on the 2014 bull test prospects. Paul is buried in sire summaries searching for future sires. Finding the best available sires is more complicated because there is a plethora of information that is better and more accurate than ever before. What has changed? The data (hard facts) have improved for birth, weaning and yearling weights. We are better at producing easy calving sires. But what is really new is the carcass merit data. Our product is a great tasting meat; quality protein with a host of additional nutritional elements. What has not changed? The core principles of adjusting the cattle to thrive in their environment and only keeping cows that never miss. We do not try to make up for Mother Nature’s shortcomings; we select the cattle that thrive without pampering. All things are not “relative.” While weaning and yearling weights are relative, birth weight (being born alive) is not relative. On High Altitude ranches, PAP SCORE is more than just relative it is critical. We select for ease of calving, low PAP, low maintenance cows, heavy yearling weight (which makes heavier weaning weights than selecting directly for weaning weight), muscle (rib eye area) and meat quality (marbling and tenderness). These have been our priorities for a very long time.
1. Live birth and surviving, everything is important after being alive.
2. Staying alive at altitude. A cow must survive 10 years or more.
3. Thrifty cows, low maintenance. Feed costs are often the biggest expense. Low maintenance cow are often more fertile 4. We sell pounds, pounds weaned per cow exposed is an essential measurement of the progress or the decline in a herd’s efficiency.
5. We sell a quality eating experience; carcass quality is the final destination.
Our job is to follow sound principles and to bring to you the best genetics possible. You will find them in a variety of packages, Angus Red and Black, Composites Red and Black, Heifer bulls and growth bulls. All are sound and fertile, ready to work. They are backed by a family with 95 years of providing an honest product to the finest people on this earth. This is not hype. If the rest of the nation was full of people with the same work ethic and personal integrity as our friends in the cattle business, this would be a far better world.
The Paul and Diane Redd Family

WeWe believe Makes Good Cow Sense to Believe ititMakes Good Cow Sense to……… 1. Use yearling bulls: Bulls used as yearlings are more active and productive than 2, 3, and 4 year olds. You’ll increase your calf crop 20% to 25% over his siring life. You have a chance to buy the best when you buy a yearling—a bull has to be better to be ready as a yearling. Almost any bull can make it as a 2 year old. If you buy 2 year olds, you are getting 2nd choice. Yearling bulls are the newest and most advanced genetics available—he could be 5 years ahead of the bull he replaces. 2. Sell the old bull. Often a slow breeder, he may lower your early calf crop by fighting off young bulls. Bulls really cost only one half their purchase price. Two old bulls will buy a fresh, fertile, clean, disease free, active, performance superior and genetically advanced yearling bull. 3. Buy only top end performance bulls. Eyeball for soundness, then use the performance. “Performance is the cowman’s one best bet to increase his profit.” 4. Buy the best bulls you can find. The bulls selected are 90% of our opportunity to improve our cowherd. A good bull not only pays off in superior weaning and yearling weights, but also in superior producing daughters. The extra production of a superior cowherd can make the top performance bull look very inexpensive. If you plan on staying in the cow business—buy the best bulls you can find. 5. Take advantage of hybrid vigor. A systematic cross-breeding program can increase your production by 5% to 25% with little or no increase in costs. At Redd Ranches, we have used over 16 different breeds and crosses. Today the Red Angus, Black Angus, Gelbvieh, Tarentaise, South Devon, Simmental, Barzona, and Hereford Cross cows are the most productive range cows that have ever been on these rugged ranges. They do produce more calf weight weaned per cow bred. They do not cost any more to run. What other management practice can you use that will increase production by 5% to 25% with little or no increase in expenses? Composite HybRedd bulls are a combination of two, three, or four breeds, bringing the strong qualities of each breed together in one bull. This is ideal for a commercial herd or the small producer who may not be able to develop his own crossbreeding program in a cost effective manner. Composite bulls give added productivity like you have seen with your crossbred cows. 6. Don’t buy fat bulls. Too often they are slow or doubtful breeders. Fat is not only deceptive, it’s expensive and can damage a bull permanently. Don’t buy him. 7. Make Mother Nature your partner. Build a cow herd adapted to work efficiently in your country (environment). Keep those good producing cows that wean a good calf every year. Cull the cows that don’t pull their weight. REDD cows fit the west’s desert winter and high altitude summer ranges. 8. Select four good feet and legs. It is hard to over estimate the value of good feet. Sound feet indicate proper feeding and breeding.

Keep “mama cow” maternal first. Reproduction efficiency in your range conditions should not be given away for growth or carcass. A live calf is 20 times more important to net return than any other trait. Select for the most growth and carcass possible without reducing your percentage of live calves or percentage of calves weaned. 11. Produce what beef consumers want, tender, tasty, lean beef. English cattle breeds (i.e. Red and Black Angus, Hereford, South Devon) provide excellent marbling and tenderness, yet Continental breeds (i.e. Gelbvieh, Simmental) provide excellent growth and a lean carcass. A cross between the two presents an excellent solution to providing what the consumer wants.

Red Angus Red Angus are the original Angus: fertile, easy keeping, easy calving, good milking tenacious mothers. Red Angus has stayed true to the native strengths of Angus. We looked long and hard to find a breed to add to our range hardy Hereford cows. If we could have only one breed, Red Angus is the best overall. Use Red Angus bulls to produce calves that will bring a premium as feeders and as carcass beef. Heifers will be fertile early maturing, highly sought after replacements, easy keeping, dependable brood cows.

Red Angus % High percentage
In the early year of Red Angus, one of the founders of the Breed, George Chiga, was asked by a fellow breeder who was concerned that the percentage Red Angus cows in his herd were actually out performing the 100% Red Angus cows, and he wanted to know what George thought he should do about it. With the humor that is pure Chiga, George smiled and whispered “Get rid of the percentage cattle!” We can relate to that breeder! George would not be surprised that still today these high percentage Red Angus cattle are as good as any cattle in our herd, and are often the high performers and top sellers. They have that tiny dose of hybrid vigor with all the goodness of a 100% Red Angus Animal.

Black Angus All of the bulls used to sire these Sale Bulls have been selected by the same criteria: modest birth weight, heavy weaning and yearling weights, low maintenance cow, added muscle and carcass quality. The Black Angus bulls in this sale are mostly from our proven Red Angus base (13 years back) and most are double black. They have the native Angus traits of low birth weight, tenacious mothers with rich milk and outstanding carcass quality.

It is also our goal to put more fun into your Redd Ranches Bull Sale experience. It has become a tradition: Spend less on advertising and give more real prizes to those who buy our bulls.
