MARCH 15, 2025

SATURDAY 1 pm mT

Fort Collins, Colorado Centennial Livestock Auction

Welcome to the sale

Welcome to the Colorado Select - Triangle J Ranch – Altenburg Super Baldy Ranch – 33rd Annual Bull Sale! In 2022 we made the decision to sell our cowherd in its entirety to Triangle J Ranch, Miller, Nebraska, Annette and Darby Line family. Triangle J was the #1 registration herd in Nebraska in 2021. Altenburg was the #1 registration herd in Colorado in 2021. These bulls are a blend of breeding of both cowherds. We want to offer you the best of both! And how similar they are, the philosophies of good Simmental and SimAngus, black, baldies, and red. No matter the origin of the cows, we think you will find bulls you will like!

All the bulls have been PAP tested – Simmental and SimAngus work well at altitude. On February 21, 2025, Dr. Tim Holt of Colorado State University tested our bulls at the ranch at 5,315 feet elevation. Our attempt is to show you which bulls are better risks to take to the “high country” and perform well. Those scores will be provided on each bull. Dr. Holt predicts spring yearling born bulls with scores of 42 or less and fall born bulls of 45 or less will work well at high altitude. Simmental and SimAngus can help solve your PAP - Brisket problems!

We are selling at Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins!! Centennial Livestock Auction is a great facilities, and the Kruse family and their crew provide excellent service. We will be selling on DVAuction.com. Please register ahead of time to assure proper bidding on sale day.

The sale starts promptly at 1:00 PM, so come early so you can view the bulls and join us at 11:30 AM for our complimentary lunch. But come early, eat lunch and talk bulls!

We look forward to seeing you at the sale, Saturday, March 15, 2025. Please call if you have any questions regarding the sale offering or leave a bid on a bull.

Remember, this is not just another sale . . . this is a crossbreeding program.

Sincerely, Willie Altenburg 970-481-2570

As most of you know by now, we are offering our 2024 bull crop for sale in 2025 in two large auctions. The 1st sale was held at our ranch in Miller, Nebraska in January. We want to thank all of our customers for making that sale a great success!

This second sale is held at Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins, Colorado the 3rd Saturday in March each year. In order to bring you some of our very best herdsire prospects, we have decided to split many of the sire groups for each sale. All of the bull calves raised at Triangle J sired by Progressive, Resource, El Dorado, Ranger, Highlife, Jackson, Patriarch, Chief, Windfall and Franchise are for sale in Colorado. This gives our customers in Colorado a chance to buy some of our very best bull prospects and allows you to buy half brothers in volume and full brothers from our elite embryo program.

Under the direction of Dr. Holt, the bull sale offering was taken to Colorado in December. This allows the bulls plenty of time to adapt to the environment and give us the most accurate PAP score possible. There is NO breed like Simmental to help solve your high altitude brisket issues!

We are fortunate to have an outstanding group of employees who work hard to improve the quality of this bull sale year after year. They spend countless hours recording data such as birth weights, weaning weight, and yearling weights. They pull tissue samples at two months of age in order to provide you with genomically enhanced EPDs. Our crew puts in extra time during the spring improving an already intensive AI program and we add more embryos every year to continue improving genetic quality.

I want to thank Willie Altenburg and everyone in Colorado who has taken such quality care of our bulls since they arrived in December. It has taken a great team to PAP score, video and fertility check this offering. Bulls are available for viewing in Colorado at your convenience. As always, call anytime if you have any questions. We would love to help you find the bull most suitable for your operation.

Sincerely, Darby Line 308-627-5085

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPD s, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs ): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www. simmental.org.

Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
