We invite you to attend our 2019 Production Sale, literally 85 years in the making.

The Cross family started with Herefords in 1934, that’s five generations of us! The goal all along has been to produce genetics that work in the commercial industry, selection that combines practicality with 21st century science and bottom line economics. We measure all performance traits but also run our cow herd in a manner that eliminates the need for extra labour, utilize the forage and winter grazing opportunities, calve in April and May on pasture, and have a short breeding season to select for fertility. Doing these extra things allows us to select for the “invisible traits. Our job is to produce breeding stock that increases value in your calf crop and reduces costs at the same time, meaning more profit. No chasing trends, just simple math. After dealing with chronic health issues in the last seven years, Jay made the difficult decision to sell the mature cow herd in 2018 and so this will be the last Bar Pipe production sale. We have held nothing back as ALL of our bulls and heifers will be sold except those bred and owned by Jay’s children Andrew and Emma. With 85 years of breeding behind them, we are confident this uniform set of cattle will improve any breeding program. As always, we stand behind them all. Generation after generation, same trusted brand. The cattle are ready to view any time prior to the sale, just give us a call and we’ll have coffee and cookies ready! You can also visit our website at www.barpipe. com for more information about our breeding program and videos on the entire sale offering. Jay Cross

We measure

and select ALL the profit traits

The Canadian Hereford Association recognizes breeders that maintain complete and accurate reporting of performance data. 5 Star breeders report calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight and at least two additional traits. We measure 5 traits: Birth Weight Cow Weight Weaning Weight Scrotal Circumference Yearling Weight

Balanced Trait Selection Balanced trait selection matters! We select for performance and EPDs along with phenotype, structure, pigment, carcass and fleshing ability, scrotal circumference on the bulls and udder quality of females.

Our Guarantee 1) We will work with you to find cattle that meet your needs and provide the information that you need 2) Your bulls have been semen tested and are structurally sound 3) We will provide you with birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, carcass EPDs, as well as history on close relatives. You are entitled to know the full story 4) If your bull does not perform, we will work with you to find a replacement that gets your cows pregnant. 4

Kootenay had the kind of style and presence that really caught our eye in a pen of 50 long yearling bulls at Durbin Creek. This is an important trait in a herd bull and one that he has passed on to his progeny. 247 adds pigment, bone and muscle. His progeny are always at the top for rib eye when we ultrasound. There are 7 sale bulls out of Kootenay this year, including Lot 1 our lead off bull for the second year in a row. He is also the sire or grandsire of 19 sale heifers! 247 is a trait leader for Post Weaning Gain, Rib Eye Area, Scrotal Circumference, Cow Weight, RFI.

BP 247 KOOTENAY 115C 115C, is a home-raised bull we used for two seasons. He is the sire of Lot 8 and seven sale heifers. His daughters at Durbin Creek Ranch are exceptional. Wyatt Agar says they are the best sire group in the first calf heifers from Bar Pipe.

“Duke has an interesting outcross polled pedigree and backed by the best cow family on the Ranch. His dam, Echo 44Y, is a maternal sister to our foundation horned sire 38T. Duke is an extremely long sided, broad topped bull, with muscle that carries deep into his hock. This rugged herd sire passes his length and muscle shape to his calves. He sired an outstanding set of bulls and females for this sale. Andy Ciancone, Kamloops, BC purchased Duke and is building his breeding program around this great bull.

Cracker Jack was in Delaney Hereford’s Reserve Champion Carload at Denver. We saw him there and purchased him at their sale along with Lilybrook Herefords. 23A is an extremely easy-doing bull and he has certainly passed that trait along to his offspring. He has extra length and muscle and is smooth made with a great profile. He was the sire of Emma’s Bonanza 2016 Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Bulll and Bar Pipe’s high selling bull at the Medicine Hat Bull Sale for $11,500 to Holloway Farms. Cracker Jack daughters have really impressed us, they have beautiful udders and are super mothers. 23A is a trait leader for Cow Weight, Udder Suspension, Teat Size, Post Weaning Gain and Rib Eye Area. We used him as an AI sire and have one bull and two feature heifers in the sale.

83C calves have modest birth weights and have tremendous growth after they hit the ground. He is a moderate framed individual that indexed 113 at weaning and 115 at yearling. His sons should follow suit, easy calving yet plenty of growth to weaning and yearling. He has a strong maternal background and his first daughters calved in spring 2019. Bar-RZ has retained an in-herd semen interest and have some top prospects out of him for sale this fall. We have successfully used him on heifers for two seasons.

10B is a proven heifer bull, with four calf crops on the ground. His actual birth weight was 77 pounds. We like the way his calves grow, he adds pounds at weaning and yearling. He is very deep flanked and has a tremendous thickness that he passes on to his offspring. We believe his daughters will be his strength. 10B sired the high selling heifer at the First Choice Sale in 2017 that sold to Blair Athol Herefords and Rae Mahaffey.

This bull has been special since the day he was born, he is proud, balanced and looks like a herd bull! We really like his smooth muscle pattern and how well it carries down into his hock. He is free moving and tracks wide. Lots of performance here with the highest index at both weaning and yearling in a contemporary group of 55. His Anchor dam was a deep bodied, easy doing cow with a near perfect udder. Her first bull sold to Byemoor Farming. We used 38F on a group of Doug, Judy and Emma’s cows and he maintained enough condition to be shown in Bonanza where he placed second in the youngest yearling class. To top it off he is short marked with small goggles. a hooded eye and is homozygous polled This young herd sire ticks a lot of boxes for any program.

This May heifer is sharp fronted and deep-sided. Daughters of the Brost bull have tight udders and he is a trait leader for WW, YW, Milk, Total Maternal and Marbling.

Heifer Calves The heifer calves are out of good cows that were too old to make the trip to Wyoming along with the rest to Durbin Creek. They have all produced replacements and sale bulls. These calves have promising futures. The heifer calves will be pre-conditioned and will be weaned by the end of October.

creating

Our program is geared to creating value for our customers. We measure and select for all traits that have a positive effect on your bottom line! This focus on profitability means that we pay attention to the fundamentals and that our customers can buy with confidence. We run our cowherd in a manner that eliminates the need for extra labour and utilizes the forage and winter grazing opportunities we have available to us here in the foothills of Alberta. Our cows calve on pasture in April and May and we continue to select for even greater fertility. Over 75 percent of our cows calve in the first cycle.

Value

How to read the numbers…

The raw numbers – We know from discussions with customers that some like the actual performance data, and others EPDs, and so we provide both. We give you an actual birth weight (BW), adjusted weaning and yearling weights respectively so that you can compare different aged bulls. Weight per day of age (WPDA) is also shown for these two weights. Ultrasound was used to assess carcass rib eye area and marbling (% intramuscular fat). Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the trait value of an animal, calculated as the difference in expected performance of progeny from that animal, compared to others of average genetic merit. EPDs are estimated not just from the phenotype of the animal but also it’s relatives and progeny, and also depends on the heritability of the trait. EPDs are reported in units of measure for the trait (e.g., lbs, cm, %). Accuracy of EPDs is the correlation between an animal’s EPD and its actual breeding value. Accuracies are normally low unless traits have been measured and until the animal has reported progeny. Four the last four year, we have added genomics testing on the sale bulls which gives us a picture of the actual gene variants inherited from the parents, giving us an immediate increase in EPD accuracy equivalent to a crop of calves. The accuracies for sale cattle can be found at www. hereford.ca, or give us a call. The Canadian Hereford Association publishes 17 EPDs (www.hereford.ca) but we have listed the ones in the catalogue that we think are most relevant to our customers:. The EPDs listed are current at the time of publication. CE - calving ease, BW – birth weight, WW weaning weight, YW - yearling weight, M – contribution of milk production to calf growth, TM – “total maternal” combines maternal contribution to WW through both milk production and genetic growth potential, REA - ribeye area, MAR – marbling. MPI – (maternal productivity index) is an index that gives economic weighting to CE, WW, M, mature cow weight, and stayablility.
