JUDGES David Byrnes, Rough Bark Bison, Yellow Grass, SK David started raising bison in 1999, and operates the Rough Bark Bison Company which is located west of Yellow Grass in south eastern Saskatchewan. The breeding herd of 150 is a mixture of Plains, WoodX and pure Wood bison, with many having been purchased at Provincial and National Shows & Sales. Finishing feeder bison for market is also a major component of the operation. In years past, David has entered bison calves at the Great Spirit Show and Sale in Manitoba and has won numerous awards. David has served on the Saskatchewan Bison Association Board, and is the President of the Many Bone Bison Feeder Co-op for Saskatchewan.
John Cammack, Cammack Buffalo Ranch, Stoneville, SD John, his dad Mike and Uncle Lane bought their first buffalo in 1998. He grew up on the ranch in Stoneville, learning the ways of agriculture from the four generations before him. He runs a cow/calf operation of 350 buffalo cows and 300 angus cows selling calves at weaning, as well as selling private treaty breeding bulls. Over the past 10 years he has entered buffalo in shows and brought home awards and trophies attesting to his passion for the buffalo. He is always looking to better the herds through top quality genetics. John has been involved in many conferences speaking, judging, and serving on boards. Along with his Uncle Lane, John works with his wife Melanie and their four kids on the ranch daily hoping to pass it down to the next generations.
Judges Comments-November 24, 2015 Commercial Cattle Barn Judges Byrnes & Cammack will share their comments on the sale animals prior to the sale. Beldon Bison Ranch is located near Nipawin, SK and is owned & operated by Nathan & Amanda Scott and Don & Paulette Scott. In operation since 1987 we believe that sound breeding programs, strong genetics, humane and ethical handling practices and a genuine love of the bison itself are the touchstones of our operation.
Bison Spirit Ranch is owned and operated by Trevor and Jodie Gompf of Oak Lake, MB. They have 3 different cow herds this year which consist of plains, woods and wood/plains cross genetics. At the 2014/15 Canadian Bison Bull Draft their entry #117 weighed in at all 5 weight intervals as the top heaviest bull. This is something they are very proud of and stands for what they are trying to achieve. He also earned top judged wood X bull for the event. ELK VALLEY RANCHES
SHALE CREEK BISON RANCH
Frank & Neil McAllister Kitscoty, AB PH: 780-846-2980
Jamie ,Debbie, Danielle & Tara Moran Russell, MB PH: 204-773-2674
Established in the early 80’s, Elk Valley Ranches is owned and operated by Frank & Neil McAllister who are proud to offer these bred heifers to Agribition. Our cow herd consists of mainly Plains X animals. Herd sires Plains X and pure Woods. We have purchased bull power from some of the top producers in Canada as well as our own home raised bulls. We feel this combination gives us a top quality animal for breeding as well as meat production. We practice diligent herd management with respect to disease, animal care & record keeping. Animals are fed a grass based diet with only low energy supplements. Our motto: Producing Bison that turn grass into Cash. Come to our MGM sale Dec 11/15 at Kramer's Auction, North Battleford for more of these top bred heifers.
Shale Creek Bison Ranch is located just outside of Russell, Manitoba and is owned and managed by Jamie and Debbie and our two daughters Danielle and Tara. Our herd is 80% breeding stock which was selected from shows and sales across Canada. We have been very successful at many shows and sales and are very proud of what we have accomplished. We were very successful in 2010 with our animals being awarded the Grand Champion Male, Female, and Reserved Champion Female at the Great Spirit Show and Sale that is in Brandon, Manitoba. At the 2012 Canadian National Show and Sale in Regina, Saskatchewan, our yearling heifers won Gold and Silver trophies and our Gold Trophy heifer went on to win the Grand Champion Female. Earlier this year (2015) we went to the National Bison Association Gold Trophy Show in Denver, Colorado for our first time. We took a yearling heifer and she won Gold. This year (2015) at the Great Spirit Show and Sale in Brandon, Manitoba, we won the Yearling Heifer Class, as well as the Grand Champion Yearling Heifer. We welcome anyone to come and visit our ranch so we can show you our animals.
LONE SPRUCE BISON Shane Fielding Amaranth, MB PH: 204-872-5312 Gary & Ruby Fielding started Hidden Acres Buffalo Ranch at Cold Lake Alberta in 1985 with 25 six month old calves. They could not have a “few” buffalo so expanded to Lone Spruce Bison Ranch in Amaranth Manitoba in 2000. Both ranches are managed on native grass, and have a basic cow herd of Plains females. Their son Shane has been involved in the operation from the beginning, but he decided to make the move permanent in 2009. In 2011, Shane introduced pure Woods Bulls and Woods X Bulls from top producers to the herd in Manitoba, adding about 100 pounds to the weaning weights of the calves. We are just beginning to see the results of his breeding program. He plans to better the cow herd by selectively adding these females into the breeding program. Shane is enthusiastic about the bison industry and sees a great future. Last year at CNSS Shane won Rookie of the Year, which he thought was pretty cool. He also won 4th place Yearling Heifer, a great launch to future opportunities. Since introducing Woods Bulls and Woods X Bulls in 2011, the selective heifer calves born in 2012 from these bulls have had their first calves this year. Although the calves have not been processed yet, viewing them in the field they seem longer and deeper and taller than previous years. Sorting and weighing season is going to be very exciting. Shane has an open invitation to stop in for a visit and he will gladly show you around.
SILVER CREEK BISON Nolan & Nicole Miller (The Miller Family) Binscarth, MB PH: 204-532-2174 Silver Creek Bison first purchased bison in 1988 and currently run 1800 head. We run a cow calf through to finishing program and keep close records throughout to select for our breeding program. Over the years we have moved the majority of the breeding to Wood X bulls on Wood X cows to improve conformation, carcass yield and other carcass traits. We run a herd of pure Wood and a herd of pure Plains to supply seed stock to other producers. If you are in our area please stop in; we would be glad to show you around.
XY BISON RANCH Bill & Faye Bouffioux & Family Fort St. John, BC PH: 250-785-4183 XY Bison Ranch operated by Bill & Fay Bouffioux with daughters Cyndy, Sandy & their families is located along the Peace River near Fort St. John, BC. The cow herd, mainly dark, was started 25 years ago with Plains heifers originating from the Merv Stagg herd. The breeding herd has been carefully selected for self reliance, consistent calving with the meat animals producing high yielding carcasses. The bull battery includes: Briggs-1/2 Woods, Cole1/2 Woods, Dorey-1/2 Wood, Davey-100% Woods, Taylor1/2 Woods, Elk Valley-1/2 Woods Patterson-Woods. We are proud of our outstanding herd and truly appreciate the many repeat buyers.

Traceability- Premise Registration Traceability is becoming ever increasingly demanded by domestic and global customers. The Canadian Bison Association has historically been leaders in traceability. For many years the industry has required animal identification with specific approved tags. Initially with bar coded dangles then progression to RFID. Full Traceability is comprised of three pillars, animal identification, premise registration and recording animal movement. As such the CBA’s focus is to assist producers in moving towards full traceability by providing information on registering their premise. Premise registration is governed by the provinces and territories as deemed by the federal government. Several provinces such as Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba require mandatory registration. The remaining province and territories at this time are requesting on a voluntary basis. Regardless of area there is no fee for registering a premise and the information is kept confidential. Both the CBA and the provinces and territories will provide support to producers in registering their premise.
