CHAROLAIS BULL SALE! They say to roll with the punches; and boy have we all gotten good at doing just that this past year. Drought and a feed shortage, dugouts dry, cattle market bouncing up and down almost as many times as the Covid waves or simply put you just had some bad luck this past year, well you weren’t alone. The lack of and price for feed was crippling in and around us and I along with many had to make some tough decisions on how to see it through and move forward. This last year saw the birth of 76 bull calves born out of a total of 138 births. We had a record-breaking number of 15 sets of twins last year which I hope to never repeat again. The bulls selected for the sale are from the very best of the 76, and only 4 bulls and 2 heifers are twins as I will only bring you the best and these are very much deserving of being added to the sale line up. The bulls were weaned on August 20th this year about two and a half weeks sooner than normal due to the lack of grass in my pastures. They were started on the pelleted 13% ration that they are on right now and will stay on up until bull sale. We had the bulls on self-feed up until January 1st switching to pail/trough feeding since then for two reasons, the first was to conserve on feed as the prepared feed bill for the pelleted ration since August 12TH it is safe to say that it costs about $1000 for each animal in the sale. The second reason is to keep the bulls in good shape and increase their longevity by eliminating excess consumption. This year’s bull pen has a lot more ground space allowing the bulls plenty of exercise which has made for a very healthy active group. The bulls are the exact same sire groups as last year’s sale except for BOB’S Integrity due to his semen in the tank ran out and the addition of HIJ Northern Spirit 367D who was used as clean up and two of the youngest bulls and one heifer calf sired by him. Once again, I would like to welcome back Rosedale farms as guest consignors to the sale, they along with their daughter and soon to be son in law who have also joined us this year under their farm operation of Roselea Cattle Co. Bring a whole new light to the sale, and I am very happy to have them taking part. Purchasing a Charolais bull is a wise economic decision that will increase your calf profits on your cow herd. With the times as they are now why wouldn’t you try to increase your bottom line any way possible. Seeing my customers succeed is important and I try to offer the best set of bulls I possibly can and at a price that is fair and affordable for all parties. BULL EVALUATION

All bulls sell with a passed semen test by a licensed veterinarian. Any decision deferred bulls selling comes with my and the vets guarantee to pass before they are delivered. Current weights and scrotal measurements will be made available sale day.

PAYMENT

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location on sale day. Any purchases made through DLMS, buyers will be invoiced and payment is due upon receiving invoice.

DELIVERY & BOARD

I offer free delivery on arranged loads in Alberta and to central points in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and will arrange trucking anywhere else at minimal costs. Any bulls returning to the farm from the sale should be insured, any loss or injury is on the buyer of the bull from the time of sale. Uninsured bulls’ delivery will be done following the sale at the seller’s convenience. All others will be delivered before April 1st when arranged loads are made to buyers area.

Once again we have seen this year that the Charolais breed has worked in every aspect of the beef industry from the cow/calf producers to the backgrounding and finishing feedlots all the way to the yields at the packing plants. •He was purchased from the Spirit of The North Bull Sale in 2016 after a road trip delivering bulls in Northern Saskatchewan. I thought he was quite the impressive bull, a outcross pedigree from our program. He had a set of feet and legs that were so solid and something I was very much requiring in a new bull, Northern Spirit as a yearling had an incredible thick wavey hair coat. He had big even testicles and a clean sheath two more must possess attributes. •Even though he was used mainly as a clean up bull, I can see the resemblance in the few bull offspring he sired to himself as a yearling. He looks to be making some terrific females also and was hard to make the decision to sell him after this past breeding season as it is time to move on and find a new genetic influence to do what he did for the past three seasons.

•New Herd Sire with an outcross pedigree for my herd. Selected HTA Defender 846F to put some size into the bull pen as I believe it is important to balance out when heading too much in one direction. Along with a little more stretch Defender has a great hair coat and is 4 generations polled which both traits have been continued on in his offspring. •Defender had a scrotal measurement of 40cm and perfect shape when he sold as a yearling. He had a moderate BW of 105 lbs. which when considering his length of body was even more acceptable. •Defender’s dam was a top cow in the HTA program and had a successful track record behind her producing their high selling bull two years prior. •Defender had the third highest ADG 4.64 lbs./day out of the 41 bulls they sold that year. •Defender has a super disposition and solid big feet under him two things that were an absolute must have when selecting this new herd sire.

•HVA Force 77F was also selected for his outcross pedigree, from a program that I respect and think highly of for the direction it is headed •Force’s dam was an extremely attractive brood cow and had a good udder with lots of milk. A definite producer with a solid track record •Force checked the box’s for Homo Polled, testicles 42 cm at 13 months, clean sheathed, great hair and one of the best solid footed bulls I have come across •Solid EPD’s which have only gotten better with his offspring. He carries the TT trait for muscling, and he is so gentle and great to work with all the time •After using him for one breeding season and seeing how exceptionally he calved with consistently low birth weights on all sorts of pedigrees and different size cows and maintained an early gestation period to accompany the low birth weights, I decided I would breed the heifers solely to him and not bother looking to buy a heifer bull that couldn’t be used on the cows or heifer bull semen and still not have a clean up plan. So I have to say it was the best decision I have made as all 24 heifers calved with all most no help. The odd bigger performance heifer needed a bit of a tug but nothing extreme or out of the ordinary. I would say he might be the best heifer bull I have ever used. The group of 17 offspring from that pen of 24 heifers being offered in this years sale is a very uniform, consistent group and this is attributed to Force and his genetic consistency.
