CUTTING EDGE BULL SALE
BAR 17 LITTLE VALLEY LIVESTOCK
Welcome to the 20th Cutting Edge Bull Sale. Its hard for Vicki and I to believe, as the original founder its been that many sales. Heck the kids were just little and look at them now. Both are very involved in Agriculture and assuring the success and future of our farm. Good times are only going to get more frequent. One thing hasn’t changed for us, and that’s raising better cattle. Over the years our herd has grown to just under 400 Angus and Simmental females. We have a strong set of bulls this year and are proud to bring them to town. I believe we have started them right; pail fed oats at weaning and turned them out on Fall Rye grass for the months of September and most of October and switched to a high roughage TMR. The bulls are quiet and easy to handle. The 43K and 29K bulls pretty much speak for themselves. Calving ease, growth and great temperament all standing on a tremendous foot. This year we have two flushes by two half sisters, Little Valley EnviousPride 304 and Little Valley Pride 783, both flushes sired by the 2023 Canadian Western Agribition Grand Champion Angus bull Greenwood Four Mile 47J. The Four Mile calves should throw tons of calving ease and sire daughters with exceptional feet and udders. VAW 304, VAW 783, and Four-Mile’s dam all excelled at these attributes. There are five Ellingson Profound 8155 sons in this year’s sale, and they all have 90 lb birth weights. Don’t let that scare you. It seems that the Angus breed has been dubbed the calving ease heifer bull breed, and they are, but let me tell you, I speak from experience, the Angus cattle can stand all day with the Exotics. The cattle market is great & let’s capitalize on it. These bulls will pay at market time. With prices the way they are now, and with a robust calf weighing 50-100 lbs more on sale day that’s anywhere from $200-$400 more per calf at sale time, and that’s only half of it, think of the great females you can retain. We are pleased with the Simmental bull offering. Five of them are sired by Mader Brazen 819J and proved to be thick, stout made, calving ease bulls. With that said if you have any questions give me, Will or Wyatt a call.

Matejka Farms Red & Black Bulls
Calving ease is often related to birthweight of a bull, this is partly true, but there are other factors that influence calving ease. The dam and her management are at least 50% of calving ease. Take into consideration your own cow herd genetic and feeding practices. The calving ease score (CE) is our best estimation based on genetics, EPD’s, Actual BW and body shape of each bull. The CE score can be found on the right column of their stats box.
HHHH Likely to have a high level of calving ease based on sire and dam history, BW, and EPD equation.
HHH Should be comfortable when bred to moderate size heifers.
HH Recommended for second calvers or cows
H Recommend for mature cows
Our bulls are comparable in genetics and performance as they are raised in similar surroundings and management. Our Cutting Edge bulls are selected from the offspring of a 200 head cow herd base. The sale bulls are pail fed, leading them to be docile, while maintaining their soundness and activity in a large group.
The feeding program has remained the same. The home raised, rolled oat based ration (with mineral pack from Bullseye Feeds) at about 1% body weight and good free choice hay, has allowed our bulls to perform, grow and mature at reasonable rates with their future in mind.

EPD’s - An Effective Tool To Assist Your Bull Buying Decisions
This does not making buying a bull any easier – it should only give you more confidence in realizing what the animal can contribute. EPD’s are a pedigree estimate that can help you navigate management and environmental conditions. Keep in mind that it is still a 50/50 contribution between the bull and the female.
NOTE: BREED AVERAGES CANNOT BE COMPARED between Red & Black Angus, nor can they be compared between other breeds of cattle.
These are the Average EPDS throughout the breed. The Lower the % means above average EPD! (NOTE: 1% is GOOD, 50% is Average) EPD’s
pounds of birth weight the lower the EPD number, the lighter the calves (the lower the % is good)
pounds of weaning weight the higher the EPD number, the more pounds will be weaned (the lower the % is good)
To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work. Keeping in mind that you cannot compare EPD numbers between breeds or even between Red Angus and Black Angus The EPD Averages listed below are the average of all the registered Canadian Black Angus and all the Canadian Red Angus. To use EPDs effectively you must understand how they work. Example:
Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd.
You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of +10 and Bull B has a weaning weight of +60. What does that mean? How can you use the EPDs to choose between the two bulls?
If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50).
pounds of yearling weight the higher the EPD number the more pounds as a yearling (the lower the % is good)
pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. (the higher the EPD number combined with WW EPD should increase weaning pounds) A management number with reflection of the environment and feed resources.
Randomly Mated with 10 Similar Cows
EPD Black Angus BW 0.4 with a 16% - should offer better calving ease than the average of 2.0 (50%), and the EPD Black Angus YW 116 at 4% should produce higher Yearling Weights that are above the average of 95 (50%).
It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs (WW & YW) may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider. +10
