Over the past 10 years he has entered buffalo in shows and brought home awards and trophies attesting to his passion for the buffalo. He is always looking to better the herds through top quality genetics. John has been involved in many conferences speaking, judging, and serving on boards. Along with his Uncle Lane, John works with his wife Melanie and their 4 kids on the ranch daily hoping to pass it down to the next generations.

We are very fortunate to have the bull power we have and when crossed onto our performance tested females the resulting offspring do very well. We believe that in order to have great genetics a ranch should set up a program where they are consistently seeing positive results. Culling sub-par animals or adding new bulls/females in is essential to a successful operation. This strict program has proven itself at Bison Spirit Ranch allowing us to consistently place at the provincial, national and international level. In addition, we are proud to have placed in the top 5 at the Canadian Bison Bull Draft (2015 - 2nd, 2016 - 1st and 5th). Be sure to check out the Bison Spirit Ranch Page on Facebook or stop by for a tour.
Bell Creek Bison is situated by Mayview, Saskatchewan along the southern edge of the Prince Albert National Park. The original herd consisted of 20 thick heifers and a bull purchased from Matt Boake back in 1991. Since then the herd has undergone continued growth, and now consists of three herds totalling 220 head. We enjoy the challenge of improving the quality of our animals and the opportunity to do so. Our herd is culled annually, using our own top end yearling heifers as replacements. We are striving for optimum weight gain, form and fertility, and so far this strategy is serving us well and has resulted in early finishing animals with high carcass weights and a uniform, productive cow herd. calves born in 2012 from these bulls have had their first calves this year. Although the calves have not been processed yet, viewing them in the field they seem longer and deeper and taller than previous years. Sorting and weighing season is going to be very exciting. Irish Creek Bison Ranch has been raising quality stock since 1992. The ranch has grown to have three distinct herds: Woods, Plains, and Wood Cross. Traceability- Premise Registration Traceability is becoming ever increasingly demanded by domestic and global customers. The Canadian Bison Association has historically been leaders in traceability. For many years the industry has required animal identification with specific approved tags. Initially with bar coded dangles then progression to RFID. Full Traceability is comprised of three pillars, animal identification, premise registration and recording animal movement. As such the CBA’s focus is to assist producers in moving towards full traceability by providing information on registering their premise. Premise registration is governed by the provinces and territories as deemed by the federal government. Several provinces such as Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba require mandatory registration. The remaining province and territories at this time are requesting on a voluntary basis. Regardless of area there is no fee for registering a premise and the information is kept confidential. Both the CBA and the provinces and territories will provide support to producers in registering their premise.
