19 th ANNUAL BULL & HEIFER SALE 19 th ANNUAL
Saturday March 11, 2023
Sale will be held on the farm at Shiningbank Lake, AB Farm Gate Timed Auction through DLMS
swantewittsimmentals.ca
Offering 61 yearlings, 14 two year olds, and 31 registered replacement heifers. Farm Gate Timed Auction Sale.
Bidding opens AT 8:00 AM March 10, 2023 and closes at 6:00 PM on March 11, 2023
Welcome to our 19th Annual Sale. It’s been a fantastic year with good crops and improving cattle prices. We have had a few more additions to the family. We welcomed our second baby boy, Jake William Laird, in July and Rowen is loving being a big brother. Also Justine and Mat had a baby boy, Tate Mathew Knull, on January 19, 2023 whom Frankie and Wren are enjoying very much. Darian and Austin have their two girls, Eiza and Elsie, down in Arrowwood and Darian is enjoying adding a few Highland cattle to her Simmental herd.
This year we have a selection of calving ease bulls from our Gilbert and Director’s Cut series as well as some polled and traditional horned fleckvieh bulls sired by our homozygous polled Keet’s Furtive herd sire. There are a couple of neat AI calves on offer and we have new genetics coming from our Wolfe Fitzroy bull who is proving to be a calving ease sire as well as to have all that thick muscle. We’ve also added Wolfes Hank to our herd and he has given us a good handful of wicked power bulls!
In our purebred program there are a good variety of homozygous polled red and black sons. A few calving ease sons from our 90 Proof heifer bull as well as power and growth bulls from Everest. We also have many of the LFE RS Lewis sons available and find that he calves great on cows without giving up any muscle. Our homegrown Gibraltar bull sired by the LFE Amber Jack bull has a few bulls in the sale and he also calves fantastic and produces many dark red calves. Major League is the new addition to our red program and although we only have one bull from him this year, he has quite a few heifers on offer. We strive to produce bulls to fit a variety of programs and all are semen tested and guaranteed.
Our replacement heifer calves are heifers that represent our herd and breeding program as a whole. All the calves at the sale are vaccinated as newborn calves with Nasalgen, an intranasal vaccine, and then boostered in spring with Pyramid + presponse and Vision 8 with somnus. They are boostered again in fall with Presponse HM, Express 5, Vision 8 with somnugen, and dewormed with Bovimectin and Clean Up II. We select our sale calves from our herd of 350 registered cows focusing on soundness, temperament, udder structure, and longevity as well as calving ease. To us it’s more important to have an unassisted calf than an assisted one with a low birthweight. No one has the time to be pulling calves in this busy day and age. Every one of our calves is weighed on a digital scale within 24 hours of birth. We will once again be having a Farm Gate Timed Auction sale this year. The bulls will be available to view on farm at any time and will be in pens for the buyers convenience starting Wednesday, March 8th. Feel free to stop by whenever or check out the bulls online. Snacks and coffee will be provided daily! Videos will be posted of each bull on our website at

Horned, Full Fleckvieh: Gilbert is Darian’s bull and we used him as a heifer bull for a couple of years before she took him down south with her. He is sired by the very successful Guerrero AI bull who has been quite popular in the simmental breed recently for his calving ease. What we really love about him is the growth that we get out of these first calvers. His calves just have so much muscle and thickness to them.

There is a lot of consistency in this cow family and you’ll see the Breezy 108B has a bull in the sale as well. Ethelda 85E has a bull that will be a two year old in the sale next year. Basically these cows can produce marketable, thick, powerful bull calves. We love their awesome feet and fabulous udders. Kip will add muscle and color to any herd.
Polled Full Fleckvieh Non Dilutor: Kiwi is Jordan’s bull and he has a great temperament. He’s that dark red color with lots of depth and a loose hide. A fantastic bull coming from a first calver with lots of thickness and growth. He was a c section due to a twisted uterus and so his calving ease scores are terrible. However I would recommend this guy as a calving ease bull, the surgery was no fault of his.

His dam had twin bull calves last year that both sold in our sale and we find the year after they twin the birthweight on the single calf tends to be a bit higher. Check out his EPDs and you will see he still has good calving ease coming from an old mature cow. She never built large calves at birth and never gave us any issues calving. Polled Purebred, Non Dilutor: King is out of Jordan and Darian’s cow they bought from Erixon Simmentals way back when Jordan was still in vet school. The old girl is still producing in the herd and this guy is going towards some RESP funds for their children! She’s been a great cow who has held up very well and has put a few bulls through the sale for them in the past.

We have been very pleased with our fullblood and purebred female program and we are very happy to be able to offer these females in our sale. Every year we struggle to choose which heifers will be retained in our herd and which we will part with since we love them all so much. We try to choose ones that represent the herdsires we are currently using. We select the heifers for our own herd at the same time as the ones for our heifer sales and aim to provide our buyers with a great representation of the kind of females we like to build our herd around. This year we have quite a few purebred heifers to offer as our cow herd was very heavy on the girls when they calved. We guarantee all of our heifers to breed to natural sires.

How to Participate in the DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auction with Extended Bidding:

First time Farm Gate users:
- First time users will select the REGISTER button. Fill out the registration form for a free user account. Select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. (please note due to some of the text notification features the Farm Gate Timed Auction Site requires a new account separate from your DLMS Live sale site)
- After you create your Farm Gate account you will receive a txt message with a pin code to verify your account.
- On your first login to Farm Gate Timed auctions we recommend you go to your profile and confirm your notifications are set to YES. This allows the site to send you text and/or email notifications when you are out bid and if there is activity on your favorite lots.
Returning Farm Gate users:
- If you have used Farm Gate Timed auctions in the past simply enter your username and password to continue.
3. How to Bid
Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in. There are 2 options for bidding on the lot.
- Place Next Bid
- Max Bid Amount – The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other.
4. Watch List Feature
If you have items in multiple auctions or a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list, you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing.
5. Sale Ending / Closeout
Most Farm Gate Timed Auction sales close racehorse style with extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and gives all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale.
6. Bidding Close & Follow-up
After the clock has gone to “ENDED” the computer will declare the sale finished. Typically within 24 hours of the sale close the sale consignor will contact all winning bidders to arrange payment, transfer of pedigrees and delivery/Pick up of your lot. Or as the winning bidding you can contact the sale consignor / sale manager to confirm payment instructions. For more info and assistance with bidding contact; DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082
