Arts Beyond Sight
Founded in 2010 with the intent of providing an annual festival for artistic and cultural exchange between Singapore and Malaysia, CausewayEXchange (CEX) has presented close to 250 artists across all arts genres and attracted an audience of 30,000 from all walks of life in both countries. To date, CEX remains the only regular platform for cross-cultural exchange between Singapore and Malaysia. Held in Singapore and Malaysia in alternating years, CEX in 2015 for instance, as part of the SG50 celebrations, brought a total of 90 Singapore artists to Malaysia in conjunction with two major festivals in two states: the month long George Town Festival in Penang and the JB Arts Festival in Johor. Key Singapore artists featured in CEX have included: Cultural Medallion recipient and founder/artistic director of The Necessary Stage, Alvin Tan; renowned comedian Kumar; well-known percussions ensemble Nadi Singapura; established music ensemble Siong Leng Musical Ensemble; photographer Edwin Koo and short film director Sanif Olek.
The Singapore International Foundation builds enduring relationships between Singaporeans and world communities, and harnesses these friendships to enrich lives and effect positive change globally. We bring people together to share ideas, skills and experiences, and collaborate in the fields of healthcare, education, the environment, arts and culture, and livelihood and business.
CEX 2016 is co-organised by DMR Productions and The RICE Company Limited with Project Management by Global Cultural Alliance Ltd.

I am proud to learn of the progression of CausewayEXchange since 2010. To date, CausewayEXchange has presented close to 250 artists across all arts genres and attracted an audience of 30,000 from all walks of life in both countries. This year, CausewayEXchange has a thirteen-day programme which includes varieties of the arts from music, theatre, painting, design, literature to live show, to name a few. I understand from Mr. Shawn Lourdusamy that this year’s CausewayEXchange is broader and improved. it will not only stage exciting performances and masterpieces but also provide opportunities for practitioners and spectators to participate in educational workshops conducted by experts. In addition to their inclusion of their arts and healing programme. I invite everyone to come together and take part in this wonderful journey offered by CausewayEXchange. I am confident that with your support, CausewayEXchange will be able to provide more avenues to encourage the exchange of platforms between the arts and creative communities in Malaysia and Singapore; and further rising bilateral relations of both countries.

How can arts and culture play a role in making the world around us a better place beyond just staging performances in places where people would usually go to?
This collaboration with Causeway EXchange 2016 is one that is meaningful for The RICE Company Ltd. As an arts enterprise which mission is to harvest the potential of the arts for a greater good for the community, this year’s Causeway EXchange with its special focus on art and healing is certainly one that resonates with us.
Tan Tee Tong Director The RICE Company Limited
We hope that by taking arts out of the its usual comfort zone of typical performance venues, this year’s programmes which has works that require audiences to experience an exhibition in a dark or which takes places in an environment of healing will or theatre experts working with children and youths will expand for us new possibilities for the place and role of arts and culture in our daily life.
This year, we have expanded the festival to include a component on the theme of “arts and healing”. Here, we look at the role the arts and culture play in healing in all senses of the word and we are glad to work with the medical communities in both Singapore and Malaysia for this first effort. Moving ahead, this component of “arts and healing” will be a main feature of the festival.
Shawn Lourdusamy Founder / Festival Director CausewayEXchange
It is all the more significant when all of the above takes place within the context of an exchange between two countries, ie Malaysia and Singapore. We welcome and thank our Malaysian friends for being with us here in Singapore and sharing with us their experiences.
2016 marks the 7th installment of CausewayEXchange and as the saying goes, there is always a “seven year itch.”
We wish all a great and enjoyable 12 days of causeway exchanges ahead!
This year, we felt it was time to give the festival a new twist. After the first six years, I am beginning to feel it is important to keep the festival relevant and, to give it a bigger purpose -- to take arts beyond performing spaces, the usual venues and the usual audiences.
Last year, the festival celebrated SG50 with a flourish: we featured 90 Singapore artistes at the George Town Festival in Penang for a month and then at the JB Arts Festival in Johor Bahru for another month.
So, this year, we are glad to have The RICE Company Ltd (TRCL) as CEX’s co-organiser. Being an arts and culture enterprise which has an emphasis on youth and the arts and on arts education, TRCL proves an ideal partner in how we can bring arts and culture beyond the usual.
We hope that our programme line up this year has become more meaningful and more exciting. We have a 2016 Boh Cameron Award winning production called ‘HOME’; Sarawak’s newest world music sensation ‘At Adau’ performing a FREE concert at the Botanical Gardens; an art exhibition in total darkness held at Suntec over 7 days; a commissioned work by ‘Main Wayang’ who will be working with kids from both the Little Arts Academy and the Malaysian High Commission over 3 days of workshops which will result in a stage performance; we have talks on the importance of arts therapy and healing as well as a concert by Medical Doctors in support of our new initiative. I wish to express my sincere thanks to H.E. Dato Ilango, High Commissioner of Malaysia in Singapore, for his support and for gracing the opening ceremony. My heartfelt gratitude to Dato Vinod Sekhar for coming in as the Presenting Sponsor to boost CEX, and Singapore International Foundation for believing in our Arts and Healing programme by helping us fund it, and also Sengkang Health as well as Suntec Convention Centre for believing in it and being new partners to CEX. I also wish to thank CEX’s sponsors and partners, friends and colleagues who have stood behind the festival since the inaugural event in 2010 and the artistes and the audience who have played a major role in the growth of CausewayEXchange.

The question is this: how do we bring arts and culture to those who otherwise may not have a chance to experience it?
So, for 2016, we have a 13 day festival bringing to you 60 Malaysian artistes to entertain and satiate your senses.

Written and directed by Khairi Anwar — an emerging name in Malaysian theatre who wrote “Teater Bangsa” that eventually won Audience Choice at 2016 Boh Cameron Awards — and Nell Hanan, “Home” tells the story of a Malaysian’s inner conflict between choosing to remain in the country or to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

Set in a village in Peninsular Malaya during the medieval period, the story tells of a teenager Siti Zulaikha who plays upon the minds of the villagers into believing that she can see witches. Drawing upon the villagers’ anxieties and paranoid, Zulaikha uses her influence to destroy the lives of those whom she dislikes, striking fear within the villagers. Her ultimate target is Megat Serapi, a married man whom she previously had an affair with. This is a story about adultery, love and the exploration of the human psyche and behaviour.

Machas rock the mic! They may not be from Sentul, Brickfields or Klang, and they may not be old men. However, these guys have one thing in common with the stereotypical old men you see in movies: they all come with massive amounts of angst and flaring tempers. This show proudly presents the best of the Machas in the comedy industry who will tickle you silly with their anger and sarcasm. Be prepared to have your eyes filled with tears of laughter, and your cheeks and belly with mirth as these men take the stage.
