About CausewayEXchange First held in 2010 and until today, the only annual platform for artistic and cultural activities between Singapore and Malaysia, CEX has to date attracted 35,000 audiences and hosted close to 350 artists in both Singapore and Malaysia. CEX is co-organised by Singapore arts production company DMR Productions and non-profit arts and culture organisation Global Cultural Alliance Ltd.

Held in Singapore and Malaysia in alternating years, CEX has showcased artists from Singapore in Kuala Lumpur, George Town and Johor Bahru. This year would be our first venture into Ipoh and a return to Kuala Lumpur with our newly initiated Arts and Healing segment which was launched last year in Singapore.

MESSAGE The Singapore-Malaysia relationship stems from deep historical, familial, and cultural links. Our peoples speak similar languages, eat similar foods, and appreciate similar cultural performances. Many of us also have family members and friends in the other country, and this would be especially true for the people of Ipoh. This festival, organised by CausewayEXchange, underscores our common bonds and provides more avenues for Singaporeans and Malaysians to interact and produce amazing art and entertainment together. It is said that art transcends all barriers, and this festival will surely bring Singapore and Malaysia closer together. This is the eighth Mr Vanu Gopala Menon iteration of the festival which alternates between Singapore HIGH COMMISSIONER OF THE and Malaysia, and I am pleased that it continues to expand REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE TO MALAYSIA its outreach into Malaysia – from Kuala Lumpur, to Penang and Johor Baru, and now to Ipoh. The Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur strongly supports such cultural and people-to-people exchanges between our two countries. MESSAGE As Ipoh enjoys a re-awakening and re-emergence over the past few years, it gives us great pleasure to host CausewayEXchange (CEX), an arts and culture programme from Singapore, over the next four days from 24th to 27th August.

This is possibly the first time that the city of Ipoh has seen such a focused programme dedicated to the sharing of the arts and variety of cultures of Singapore. Here we are pleased to learn that the contingent of artists from Singapore will also engage in collaborations with their counterparts here in Malaysia. I understand that award-wining Singapore writers will share the stage with their counterparts in Ipoh in a panel discussion on the use of the English language in their respective countries, while a group of street artist from Singapore will collaborate with our very own artist from agency People of Remarkable Talents (P.O.R.T.) in adding more colors to the various murals already seen in Ipoh. More than being just a series of performances, CausewayEXchange brings with it an in-conjunction programme, Urban Culture Asia: Ipoh which will see a delegation of creative and cultural entrepreneurs in search of collaboration with their counterparts in Ipoh. Here, Ipoh, or Perak has much to offer to the visitor or to those seeking collaborations. And we are sure that Singapore has much to offer Ipoh too. In this, we hope that cross–border collaborations such as CEX will further intensify Ipoh’s impulse to become as a key destination in Malaysia that is abuzz with new ideas and new trends. In turn we hope that with us hosting visitors from Singapore, we would be able to further widen opportunities for our new found friends that will be enriching for both Ipoh and Singapore.

In 2016 Lonely Planet listed our capital, Ipoh as the 6th best place to visit in the whole of Asia while the state of Perak is listed as the 9th best region to visit in the world for 2017. Such recognition does not go unnoticed as we have been recording a steady increase in foreign tourists for the past few years. The CausewayEXchange programme, Urban Culture Asia, is timely as we reposition Perak to be a center for arts and culture in the northern region of Malaysia, as it revolves around local and international creative and cultural activities to be offered both for the foreign and local visitors. Singapore, in particular, has remained one of Malaysia’s strongest markets in terms of tourist’s arrivals of 12.93 million in 2015 alone. With a steady growth of 3.2 per cent in annually, we are expecting the graph to go upward by next year, especially so, since we are in the midst of our biggest tourism campaign to date called the Visit Perak Year 2017. Lastly, I hope that the organisers and participants will enjoy every moment of this CausewayEXchange and not only take home memorable impressions but also seal lasting friendships between the two cities. CausewayEXchange (CEX) 2017 marks a milestone in the growth of this annual cross-cultural and cross-border programme between Singapore and Malaysia. Here, CEX takes a two pronged approach in building greater ties between Singapore and Malaysia through arts and culture. Here, it will take place in two cities in Malaysia: Ipoh from 24th to 27th August and Kuala Lumpur from 22nd to 24th September. This approach represents the dual facets of CEX. The first, that of enriching and broadening our understanding of neighbouring historical cities as well as developing or creating new audiences and opportunities for Singapore’s creative industries. And the second, that of continuously looking at how cross border exchanges can enrich our understanding how the role of the arts and be expanded continuously to help address various conditions of our society, especially areas which need therapy and healing. Here, CEX has chosen Ipoh this year instead of the more well-known and culturally established cities of Kuala Lumpur and George Town for once famous tin mining town of Ipoh is now experiencing a reawakening. Its rich heritage holds many leaning and experiential touchpoints of Singaporeans as well as opportunities. CEX in Ipoh is symbolic of SIngapore’s daring to venture into

‘new’ markets and places and Singapore’s vision of establishing new alliances and relationships in the region and beyond. We are also to bring a delegation of Singapore creative entrepreneurs to Ipoh in an in conjunction event, Urban Culture Asia: Ipoh to explore new collaborations with their counterparts in Ipoh. As for our presence in Kuala Lumpur, last year CEX launched an ‘arts and healing’ component which looked at the expanded role of arts and culture in the field of therapy. Its reach and success has inspired us to further this component further and for it to be the central focus of CEX in Kuala Lumpur. From 2017, we will be making the ‘arts and healing’ a regular platform within CEX and we will focus on continuity and monitor the impact of the work we have done. Through CEX this year, vis-à-vis this two pronged approach and with support from the state agencies from both Singapore and Malaysia and private corporations, we truly hope to be able to engage with our Malaysian counterparts through wider platforms, geographically, culturally and socially.

FLAME OF THE FOREST was formed in 1986 as a dynamic trio coming together for the love of music. 5 years ago, Krsna & Govin Tan decided to inherit the band from their father, Kenny Tan and sought to update the concepts and philosophies bestowed upon them by their predecessors from the 80s. Incorporating styles from other genres, the band synergises the different ideas and concepts from all other music with their understanding of Indian Classical and Folk music - concocting a refreshing blend of music. In addition to combining genres, the band also modernises vital concepts of World Fusion Music that are easily ignored by many. FOTF aims to give an enhanced perspective on the musical alchemy that they have developed by inspiring, influencing, educating and communicating with listeners through their music.

CEX Slam is a slam between Singapore and Malaysia, where 5 poets from each country go up against each other to find out which country takes home the poetic bragging rights for the year. Founded in 2011 as the Causeway Slam, CEX Slam took a break since its inception until its revival and rebranding in 2016, where the Malaysian contingent took home the champions title. CEX Slam 2017 is the return leg of this clash, as it is Singapore’s turn to visit Malaysia in a bid to claim the title. 2016 saw Malaysia win both the solo and group categories. Will we see Singapore return home this year with a share of the spoils, or will Malaysia defend last year’s and claim this cycle’s title outright? Poets will be announced in due course.

Join poet Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingdé and Tse Hao Guang, as they shares various techniques that will help you explore the limits of language, experimenting with structure and voice. ABOUT THE FACILITATOR Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingdé is the author of an epistolary novel, two hybrid works, and seven poetry collections. A former journalist, he has edited more than 15 books and co-produced three audio books. I Didn’t Know Money Was a Conceptualist (2014, Math Paper Press) was a CoWinner of the Singapore Literature Prize English Poetry category in 2016.

Born in Singapore to Hong Kong and Malaysian parents, Tse Hao Guang authored poetry anthologies such as hyperlinkage (2013) and Deeds of Light (2015, both Math Paper Press). He graduated from the Masters of Arts Programme in the Humanities at the University of Chicago, United States, in 2014 with a concentration in poetry and creative writing. 8 • CausewayEXchange 2017

Paul is an Ipoh-born writer whose work often focuses on the experiences, issues and identity conflicts of those in the Indian diaspora. His first solo collection of short stories, Latha’s Christmas & Other Stories, was published in 2013. He currently lectures at University Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar, Perak.

Wani is a Malaysian creative writer, poet and independent singer- songwriter. Based in Ipoh since 2016, Wani wears many hats; she is editor at Sang Freud Ruhma Ripta, chief editor at CQ Malaysia, founder of Pasar Boco and has 20 years of experience in creative writing and the performing arts.

Shu Hoong is the author of five poetry collections, including Frottage (2005) and The Viewing Party (2013), which won the Singapore Literature Prize in 2006 and 2014 respectively. His works have been published in literary journals and anthologies such as Language for a New Century (W.W. Norton, 2008).

Ipoh-born Bridget is a life member with the World Congress of Poets, World Academy of Arts and Culture, and the United Poets Laureate International. Author of two poetry books When the Footsteps Merge and A Horizon of Jewels, Bridget has given poetry recitals in Malaysia, Japan, US and Singapore.

Born in 1951, Piak How graduated from Nanyang University in 1976 with Honours in Economics. In 1972, with a group of young poets, he published New Poems by 15 Singapore Poets. His first poetry anthology, A City’s Story (2015) was shortlisted for Singapore Literature Prize 2016.

YEW CHONG or YC is a full-time finance professional who enjoys painting street art and sketching on weekends. He started painting his first street art in August 2015 in Singapore’s Everton Road historic area, while taking a break from work. He has since painted over 20 street murals in Singapore. The themes of YC’s street art and sketches are mostly related to lost scenes of Singapore, aimed to evoke fond memories of the yester years, as well as to serve as education of Singapore’s heritage to the younger generations.

Award-winning humanitarian Professor James Newton Boss presents an unusual take on past in the region through his new book Journey of 190 Years: The Eurasian Catholic Community in Singapore 1825 – Present. Taking the history of Singapore’s historic St Joseph’s Church as its focal point, Professor Boss looks at the how a common faith as well as shared practices and folklore binds the Eurasian Catholic community in Singapore together. Delving into histories of old Singapore Eurasian families and looking at history of delicacies such as the Malacca Cheese, Dr Boss’ book presents an accessible and anecdotal glimpse into one of the oldest communities in Singapore. Professor Boss’ session in Ipoh for CausewayEXchange 2017 will see him share his own personal experience as as member of the Eurasian community and explore commonalities between Eurasians in Singapore and in Malaysia, in particular those in Ipoh.

Friendship WALL

The concept of the friendship wall came about 2 years ago in Johor to bring two communities from both sides of the Causeway to work on a collaborative piece. Last year we had the opportunity to bring doodlers from Penang to Singapore. This year we are excited to work hand in hand with The Band of Doodlers and PORT on a bigger scale. They will be tasked not only to paint a wall, but an entire house.

Made up of artists with keen interests in doodling, drawing and illustration, we are “white space bandits” on a mission to rid the world of blank spaces. The Band of Doodlers was started in 2013 by founder Mas Shafreen (Wanton Doodle) to promote collaboration through an accessible art form. We advocate fun and collaboration through live doodling performances.

It was great to have had the opportunity to spread the awareness of Dramatherapy in a hospital setting in Singapore. I feel privileged and honoured to have been invited to perform in Singapore CEX, a program where doctors also showcased their talents as musicians. CEX 2016 in Singapore was Anomalistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debut to stage our play outside our home, and it opens up a lot of other opportunities for us. Not just we can stage our own voice from Malaysia, about Malaysia, in our neighbouring country, but we found that Singaporeans appreciate our craft in a unique perspective, that we never had when we staged it in Malaysia. We now have a broader ideas to how art should and can evolve, and one of it is by taking the art out from the hometown, because then we can grow and be something better, we become part of the world. I had a brilliant time at the CEX Festival in Singapore last year. I worked with closely with CEX and Word Forward to revive the CEX Poetry Slam, and managed the Malaysian contingent of slammers. It was a great experience, not just because we won, but for the fact that CEX did not let the slam die out from its hiatus and approached us to help revive it. Working with CEX was easy and I hope the slam will remain a fixture in CEX, and become a celebrated annual poetry event between Singapore and Malaysia!
