PS
PREFACE UNIT NINE WITH THE THEME OF REPRODUCTIVE CITY RECREATES THE CONCEPT OF THE SOCIAL CLUBS WITH THE SAME CORE IDEOLOGY BUT IN AN UP-TO-DATE APPROACH BECOMING A USEFUL ADDITION TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE CHOSEN SITE IS LOCATED IN CUBA, ON THE FACTORIA ROAD OF HAVANA. IT IS A NARROW CRESCENT SHAPED LAND BORDERED BETWEEN TRACKS OF THE CUBAN NATIONAL RAILWAY ON EACH SIDE, ONE NOT VERY OFTEN USED, ON THE GROUND, ON THE EAST BORDER, AND THE OTHER, ON THE WEST, CONSTRUCTED ON A STRONG DOMINANT STEEL FRAMED STRUCTURE, BUT OUT OF USE. BEING LOCATED BETWEEN THESE TWO TRACKS, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE STEEL CROSS-BRACINGS AND THE COLUMNS, THE GROUND LEVEL FLEXIBILITY IS VERY LIMITED , WHICH HAS MANIFESTED IN THE PROPOSAL BEING AN ELEVATED BUILDING, BUT ALSO PROVIDES WITH A UNIQUE SCENE AND THE RAILWAY BEING AN IMPORTANT INFRASTRUCTURE, REDUCES THE POSSIBILITY OF ANY OTHER MAJOR CONSTRUCTION IN THE VICINITY, NOT TO MENTION THE POSSIBILITY OF USING THE TRACKS, OR INTEGRATING THEM IN THE PROPOSAL IN THE FUTURE.
4
THE PROPOSAL –THE SKILL CLUB- IS A CENTRE WERE THE CURRENCY IS ‘SKILL’ AND ANYONE WITH ANY TALENT COULD USE THE FACILITIES IN EXCHANGE FOR OFFERING THEIR SKILL. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR A WIDE RANGE OF PEOPLE TO BECOME INVOLVED AND ALSO HELP BUILDING AND MAINTAINING THE CLUB WITH THOSE SKILLS.
CAVEH BAHREYNI TOOSSI U1620580
HAVANA SKILL CLUB
THE PROPOSAL IS STEEL BASED CONSTRUCTION, SIMILAR TO THE ADJACENT RAILWAY STRUCTURE, FITTING WITHIN THE CONTEXT. WITH THE MENTIONED FRAMEWORK STRUCTURE, THE NEED FOR LOAD-BEARING WALLS WAS REMOVED WHICH PROVIDED WITH UNOBSTRUCTED FLOORS, WITH OPEN SPACES WHICH ARE EASILY DEFINED BY PARTITION WALLS, OFFERING FLEXIBLE OPEN SPACES WHICH WITH THE HIGH CEILING FACILITATES A BETTER VENTILATION IN THE HOT CUBAN CLIMATE. THE PROPOSAL HAS INTRODUCED A WALL ON THE WEST SIDE WHICH ACTS AS AN ATTRACTION FEATURE BEING SEEN FROM FAR, WHILE COVERING THE ACTUAL BUILDING, AND PROVIDING SHADE DURING THE HOT HOURS. IT ALSO ACTS AS A MODIFIED SOLAR CHIMNEY WHICH WITH OTHER METHODS HOPE FOR CARBON FOOT PRINT REDUCTION. THE PROPOSAL INCORPORATES INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, AND FACILITIES FOR PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL AND MODERN AGE TECHNOLOGY SKILLS.

CASE STUDY PLUMSTEAD COMMON WORKING MEN’S CLUB
TS
PLUMSTEAD COMMON WORKING MEN’S CLUB FIRST ORIGINATED FROM A DOCTOR’S SURGERY AT THE FRONT OF KIRKHAM ROAD. DURING THE EARLY 1900s THE NEW BUILDING WAS BUILT FOR THE CLUB (1907 AS INSCRIBED ABOVE THE ENTRANCE) ‘ THE CLUB HAS BEEN EXPANDED A FEW TIMES WITH ADDITIONS TO THE SIDES AND A BIG PROFESSIONAL DART ROOM, AND A LARGE SNOOKER HALL AT THE BACK WITH FOUR BEAUTIFUL TABLES!
“However, despite the pleasure it gives so many people, the WMC is struggling to find its place in contemporary British society.” (Marshall, 2017)
THE BUILDING WAS ONCE VERY CLOSE TO THE SECOND WORLD WAR BOMBED AREA IN 1940-1941 THAT HAPPENED ON THE BUILDINGS NORTH TO THE CLUB. THE DART CLUB IS VERY ACTIVE AND HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY THE BRITISH DART ORGANIZATION FOR MAJOR TOURNAMENTS WITH ITS EIGHT DART BOARDS. THE MANY TROPHIES WON BY THE MEMBERS ORNAMENTING THE ENTRANCE SHOWS THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE THEM FOR THIS SPORT. IT IS NOT ONLY DART, BUT ALSO SNOOKER HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE HISTORY OF THE CLUB AS STEVE DAVIS STARTED HIS CAREER AT THIS CLUB AND PRACTICING THERE, GRADUALLY MAKING HIS WAY TO BECOME A CHAMPION. THE CLUB HAS RECENTLY BEEN THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME AND THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS HAS DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY AFTER THE BAN OF DRINK DRIVING IN THE UK WHICH PREVENTED MEN TO DRIVE AFTER HAVING THEIR DRINK IN A LOCAL PLACE.

PLUMSTEAD COMMON WORKING MEN’S CLUB WAS INITIALLY A SINGLE BLOCK BUILDING BUT OVER THE TIME IT EXPANDED. THIS EXPANSION HAS OCCURRED IN AN INTERESTING WAY AS IT HAD KEPT THE ORIGINAL INTEGRITY OF THE BUILDING INTACT, AND WITH AN ADAPTED CIRCULATION WITHOUT BREAKING THE BORDER OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACE MAKING IT ALTER IN A GRADUAL TRANSITION, ONE DISSOLVING INTO THE OTHER AND PROVIDED THE USERS WITH NEW FACILITIES IN THE NEW SPACES. THIS PRINCIPLE WAS ADOPTED IN THE PROPOSAL TRYING TO HAVE SPACES WHICH ARE CONNECTED TOGETHER WHILE KEEPING THE BORDER BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DISTINGUISHABLE YET BLURRED AND AVOIDING A SHARP CLEAR BORDER ALLOWING THE USERS TO FEEL STEPPING IN A RELAXED LESS CONSTRAINED ENVIRONMENT. THE CIRCULATION HAS BEEN EXPLAINED ON ANOTHER DIAGRAM SEPARATELY.
1- THE ORIGINAL BUILDING BUILT IN 1907. 2 -THE ADDITION OF THE ADMIN SPACE WITH ITS OWN (AND ONLY) ENTRY POINT THROUGH THE MAIN CIRCULATION CHANNEL. 3- WITH DART BECOMING POPULAR A DART CLUB WAS ADDED TO THE REAR END OF THE CLUB. THE GENERAL USER ACCESS TO THIS SPACE IS A DIRECT PATH THROUGH THE MAIN BUILDING BUT DOES NOT REQUIRE CROSSING THE MAIN SOCIAL SPACE. 4- THE ADDITION OF THE SNOOKER HALL WITH ITS TWO ENTRANCES. THIS PART IS ACCESSED BOTH FROM THE MAIN SOCIAL SPACE AND THE DART CLUB ALLOWING FOR AN EASY ACCESS FROM BOTH GROUP OF USERS. THIS ALSO ALLOWS FOR THE PLACE TO BE PRIVATELY OR SEPARATELY ACCESSIBLE IN CASE OF HAVING DIFFERENT GROUPS OR ACTIVITIES AT THE SAME TIME.

THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE OPPOSITE PAGE SHOWS THE VARIOUS SPACES AND HOW THE CIRCULATING ZONE HAS BEEN EMBEDDED WITHIN THEM. IT ALSO GIVES AN IDEA OF THE STRUCTURE AND THE RELATION OF THE SPACES AGAINST THE STRUCTURE. THE CIRCULATION IS BOTH A CONNECTING AND A SEPARATING ELEMENT BETWEEN THE SPACES. THIS ZONE AT PARTS ONLY GRANTS ACCESS TO ONE SPACE THROUGH ANOTHER PART - CREATING A HIERARCHY, AND INVISIBLE BARRIER - BUT AT OTHER TIMES PROVIDES WITH A DIRECT LINE.
THE ABOVE DIAGRAM SHOWS THE MAIN VARIOUS SPACES USED IN THE CLUB AND HOW THEY RELATE TO EACH OTHER WITHIN THE SPACE, ALSO THE OVERALL ACCESS AND THE SERVICES.

UNIT TRIP HAVANA, CUBA
UNIT NINE STUDY TRIP THIS YEAR HAS BEEN TO THE CARIBBEAN, VISITING HAVANA, THE CUBAN CAPITAL. THE FOCUS OF THE TRIP WAS INVESTIGATING THE ARCHITECTURAL ASPECTS AND INFLUENCES OF THE POLITICAL SITUATION OF CUBA, AND HOW THROUGH YEARS THE STYLE AND METHODS OF ARCHITECTURE HAS BEEN CHANGED AND ADAPTED ITSELF TO THE NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS OF THE TIME. ON THE OTHER ASPECT, LOOKING INTO THE SOCIAL LIFE AND THE WORKING MEN’S CLUB AND LIFESTYLE, AND EVALUATING THE POTENTIALS OF REINTRODUCING THE CONCEPT IN THE COMMUNITY.
18
ONCE A BLOOMING SOCIETY AND A DREAM DESTINATION FOR MANY, NOW HAVANA IS CRUMBLING UNDER THE HUMIDITY, POVERTY AND LACK OF MAINTENANCE. THE MAGNIFICENT FAÇADES ARE AMONG THE LAST REMAINING PARTS OF THAT PROSPEROUS ERA, STILL PROUDLY STANDING, BUT WHAT IS BEHIND THOSE BEAUTIFUL COLOURFUL FAÇADES IS THE REAL LIFE OF CUBANS, A LIFE WE DO NOT SEE, ONE WHICH IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FORM THE PICTURES TAKEN FROM THE STREETS.
CAVEH BAHREYNI TOOSSI U1620580
HAVANA SKILL CLUB
HAVANA
ES PS
THE GLORIOUS FAÇADES OF CUBAN STREETS.
20
THERE WAS SO MUCH ATTENTION GIVEN TO THE FAÇADES, TO THE OUTER SPACE, TO THE APPEARANCE. THE EMPHASIS ON THIS, AND ON THE EFFORT OF KEEPING THE OUTSIDE BEAUTIFUL WAS AN INTERESTING ENCOUNTER, ONE WHICH PARTLY INFLUENCED THE LATER PROPOSAL.
CAVEH BAHREYNI TOOSSI U1620580
HAVANA SKILL CLUB
THESE FAÇADES SOMETIME HAVE NO REAL RELATION TO THE EVERYDAY LIFE CONCEALED WITHIN THEM, AND AT TIMES ARE JUST THE MEANS OF ATTRACTION, OR TO DISTRACT FORM THE REALITY OF INSIDE, AND AT TIMES, MORE THAN OFTEN, ONLY A WALL WITH NOTHING BEHIND.
THE ENDLESS COLONNADES OF CUBAN STREETS. THROUGH THE COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE THE COLONNADE WAS EMPHASIZED IN CUBAN ARCHITECTURE. THIS WAS PARTIALLY TO ADAPT THE SPANISH ARCHITECTURE WITH THE HOT AND SUNNY CLIMATE IN CUBA, WHICH ALSO PROVIDED WITH AN INTERESTING UNDERSTANDING OF THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACE SEPARATION, AS IT BLURRED THE BORDER BETWEEN THE TWO, WHICH IS ANOTHER INFLUENCE OF THE CITY ARCHITECTURE IN THE PROPOSAL. WALKING ACROSS THE CITY VERY OFTEN ONE WOULD ENCOUNTER OPEN DOORS, PEOPLE INSIDE, OR OUTSIDE UNDER THE SHADE OF THE COLONNADE, ENGAGING IN SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND THE DOORS, THE WALLS, AND THE COLUMNS WERE NOT OBSTACLES TO PREVENT IT, BUT ON THE CONTRARY ACTED AS GUIDES TO CHANNEL IT.
PS
THE DOORS OF CUBAN STREETS.
22
THE CONNECTION OF INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, THE BORDER TO THAT BLURRED SPACE MENTIONED EARLIER ARE THE DOORS OF THE CUBAN HOMES. THEY VARY FROM HEIGHT AND WIDTH, TO SHAPE AND PLACE, BUT APPEARED AS THERE IS NO CONCERN REGARDING THE WIDTH, NOR THE NUMBER OF STEPS, OR HOW THE LANDINGS ARE PLACED, IF ANY.
CAVEH BAHREYNI TOOSSI U1620580
HAVANA SKILL CLUB
THIS APPEARANCE OF NUMEROUS DOORS, ESPECIALLY NARROW ONES, APPEARED TO BE ANOTHER ADAPTATION TO THE REAL LIFE SITUATION, AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH KEEPING THE GLORIOUS FACADE INTACT. THE BUILDING ON OUTSIDE GAVE THE IMPRESSION OF BEING ONE, BUT THESE NARROW DOORS WERE CUT FROM AN EARLIER EXISTING WIDER HALLWAY AND DIVIDING THE PLOT IN TWO OR MORE, HENCE THEIR NARROWNESS. YET, AS ONE WOULD OFTEN SEE, THE DOORS WERE NOT CLOSED, OR WOULD NOT BLOCK THE CONNECTION, THE LINE OF SIGHT, FROM INSIDE TO OUTSIDE, REDUCING THE FINE EDGE BETWEEN IN AND OUT. IT WAS TRIED TO BRING THIS FLUIDITY WITHIN THE PLANS OF THE PROPOSAL.
THE ILLUSTRATION OF THIS PAGE INDICATE HOW THE COLONNADES OF THE COLONIAL BUILDINGS PROVIDED AN INTERMEDIARY SPACE BETWEEN THE PUBLIC (OUTSIDE) AND PRIVATE (INSIDE) AREA. HAVING VARIOUS DOORS OR OPENINGS ALSO ALLOWED FOR AN EASY, RELAXED AND UNOBSTRUCTED CIRCULATIONS BETWEEN VARIOUS SPACES, WHILE KEEPING THE ACCESSIBILITY IN CONTROL BY CREATING LAYERS AND ZONES.

THE SITE IS LOCATED ON THE FACTORIA ROAD, WHICH RUNS ADJACENT TO THE MAIN NATIONAL RAILWAY STATION OF HAVANA, CONNECTING IT TO THE POWER PLANT, FURTHER WEST AT THE END OF THE ROAD. IT IS ALSO SEPARATED FORM THE BAY OF HAVANA WITH THE TRACKS OF THE RAILWAY, AND A BUSY HIGHWAY. WALKING ALONG FACTORIA ROAD, THE BUILDINGS CHANGE FROM SMALL AND OVERLY OCCUPIED RESIDENTIAL, THE COMMON STYLE OF HAVANA, TO LARGE BLOCKS OF UNOCCUPIED AND ABANDONED STRUCTURES, AS ILLUSTRATED ABOVE. IN THE VICINITY OF THE SITE, BESIDE THE HUGE AND LENGTHY RAISED TRAIN TRACK, THERE ARE VARIOUS IMPORTANT ELEMENTS, INCLUDING THE BEAUTIFUL RUINS OF THE OLD POWER PLANT, WHICH ARE MENTIONED ON THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE NEXT PAGE.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE CASE STUDY AND THE WAY SPACES WERE CONNECTED, THEIR HIERARCHY AND CIRCULATION, LEAD TO EXPERIMENTING HOW VARIOUS SPACES CAN BE CONNECTED. THIS CONNECTION, AND THE INTER-RELATION WAS FIRST EXPERIMENTED IN A 2D MANNER SIMPLY CONNECTING SURFACES (RESEMBLING ZONE OR LEVELS, NOT FLOORS) AND INTERLOCKING THEM THE TOP ROW DIAGRAMS - AND IN THE NEXT ATTEMPT, IN A MORE ELABORATE APPROACH, THEY WERE ENVISIONED IN A 3D SPACE TRYING TO ESTABLISH A SPATIAL CONCEPT AND INITIAL IDEA FOR THE PROPOSAL AS SEEN IN THE LOWER DIAGRAMS.

THE ILLUSTRATION ABOVE IS AN INITIAL GUIDELINE PRODUCED TO BE ADOPTED IN THE PROPOSAL. IT IS AN INDICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES REQUIRED FOR EACH ZONE AND SPACE. DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS, THE SPACES HAVE BEEN MODIFIED, RELOCATED AND CHANGED TO FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES. BEING IN THE HOT CLIMATE OF CUBE AND THE SHORTAGE OF POWER HE BUILDING IS MAINLY NATURALLY VENTILATED THROUGH WIDE OPENINGS TOWARDS EAST (WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE PREVAILING WIND TO ENTER FREELY), INTRODUCING THE WALL ON THE WEST SIDE CASTING SHADOW IN THE HOT HOURS OF THE DAY, AND HIGH CEILINGS.

THE SKILL CLUB BEING FOR THE LOCALS AND BELONGING TO THEM WILL BE FUNDED MOSTLY THROUGH ITS SHAREHOLDERS AND INVESTORS BUT IN ESSENCE, AS MENTIONED ITS CURRENCY IS SKILL AND THUS ANYONE WHO CAN USE THEIR SKILL IN THE PRODUCTION AND MAINTAINING THE CLUB COULD BE A POTENTIAL SHAREHOLDING MEMBER. THE REST OF THE FUNDING WOULD BE THE HELP OF THE GOVERNMENT, FUNDS FROM THE LOCALS, AND THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD CDR. THE MAINTENANCE IS ALSO A USER COMMUNITY DUTY AND ON THE SHAREHOLDERS. THIS IS ALSO WHERE THE SKILLS COULD BE USEFUL IN MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS ALONG WITH ENHANCEMENTS AND UPGRADES. THE CHAIR OF THE CLUB WOULD BE ELECTED THROUGH THE USERS AND SHAREHOLDERS BUT FROM ONE OF THE TRUSTED MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, WHO IS KNOWN, REPUTABLE AND RESPECTED.
THE PROGRAMME WILL BRING THE SKILLS OF THE MASTERS (IN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF MASTERY) TO THE SEEKERS. IN THE CURRENT SITUATION IN CUBA PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE MUCH SPARE MONEY TO SPEND ON EXTRA ACTIVITIES, BUT WITH ESTABLISHING THIS CLUB THEY CAN TURN THEIR SKILLS INTO SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND LEISURE. THE SKILLS OF ANY REASONABLE USAGE AND ACCEPTABLE TYPE ARE WELCOMED. THE USER DEMOGRAPHIC IS ANY PROVIDER AND SEEKER OF SKILL, MOSTLY TEENAGER AND ABOVE. THE FACILITY IS ALSO WELCOMING CHILDREN BUT THEY NEED TO BE SUPERVISED.

IN AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND STRUCTURAL APPROACH TOWARDS EFFICIENCY, THE PRINCIPLES OF THE PROPOSAL WERE ALTERED IN A FEW STEPS. CONSIDERING THE PROPOSAL COVERING THE TOTAL SPACE OF THE SITE AND BEING A BLOCK THE FIRST STEP WAS INITIATED, WHICH LEAD TO THE CUT OUT OF THE FRONT PART MATCHING IT WITH THE BORDERS OF THE SITE. TO PROVIDE LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING AND AVOIDING UNLIT OR POORLY LIT AREAS, RESULTING FROM VERY LONG OR DEEP FLOORS THE DESIGN WAS DIVIDED IN TWO SEGMENTS OF MAIN AND AUXILIARY, AND THEN TILTED TOWARDS SOUTH TO ALLOW MORE NORTHERN LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING AND PROVIDING EXTRA SHADING ON THE SOUTHERN PARTS. YET HAVING DEEP FLOORS AND BEING VERY CLOSE TO THE TRACKS OF THE RAILWAY THE WIDTH WAS REDUCED AND AT THE FINAL STAGE THE WALL ON THE WEST WAS INTRODUCED WHICH PREVENTS THE SUN FROM ENTERING THE BUILDING ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON WHEN IT IS AT ITS STRONGEST.

THE BUILDING STRUCTURE CONSISTS OF STEEL COLUMNS SIMILAR TO THE ADJACENT RAILWAY TRACK, PROVIDING A FRAME AND MESH THAT THEN THE FLOOR SLABS ARE PLACED UPON. IT HAS A RAISED GROUND, ONLY LEAVING THE CORE AND THE HEAVY MACHINERY SPACES ON THE GROUND LEVEL, AND THE ONLY PART AS BASEMENT IS THE PLANT ROOM. ON EAST IT HAS BEEN PROTECTED BY VERTICAL SHADES WHICH DURING THE FEW HOURS OF MORNING PROVIDE BETWEEN 14%-32% SHADING, AT 6:00 AM, TO 10%-95% AT 11:00 AM THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND AFTER 11:00 AM THE SUN PASSES OVER TO THE WEST SIDE AND THERE IS COMPLETE SHADING. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GROUND AND THE UPPER LEVELS IS EITHER THROUGH THE LIFT AND STAIRS OF THE MAIN CORE, OR ON THE 2 LOWER FLOORS BY THE RAMP, WHICH ALSO ACTS AS A LITTLE OUTDOOR EVENT SPACE, AS THE RAMPS ARE NOT DIRECTLY ABOVE EACH OTHER ON ONE SIDE. THE PROPOSAL AND RAMP BEING OUTSIDE OF THE UK, RUNS WITHIN A REASONABLE ACCESSIBLE ANGLE BUT DOES NOT PROVIDE FREQUENT LANDINGS SIMILAR TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF BRITISH BUILDING REGULATIONS. ITS PURPOSE HAS BEEN MAINLY INDICATED AS ENTERTAINMENT RATHER THAN ACCESS. CONSIDERING THE NUMBER OF BUILDING RUINS IN HAVANA AND THEIR POSSIBLE DEMOLITION, THE WALL WILL MAINLY BE CONSTRUCTED WITH RECLAIMED BRICKS FROM THESE BUILDINGS, REDUCING THE NEED FOR NEW MATERIAL AND LOWERING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT.
THE WALL AND THE STEEL FRAME OF THE BUILDING IS STRENGTHENED BY THE TENSION CABLES PLACED PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR TO THE WALL. THESE CROSSED TENSION CABLES ALLOW FOR THE TENSION AND COMPRESSION OF THE WALL, CAUSED BY ITS WEIGHT, AND ITS RESISTANT AGAINST THE WIND, TO BE DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE STRUCTURE AND PASSED TO THE GROUND.
46
THE CUT OUT OF THE FLOOR ON THE THIRD LEVEL CREATES A LARGE SPACE FOR EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES WITH AMPLE NORTH LIGHT PENETRATING INTO THE BUILDING, AND WITH THE SET BACK OF THAT FLOOR IT ALLOWS FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY THE ACTIVITY OR SCREENING HAPPENING ON THE FLOOR BELOW.

1 0 THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE END OF FACTORIA ROAD, IT IS AN AVERAGE ROAD, NOT VERY WIDE AND DOES NOT ALLOW FOR THE BUILDINGS AT THE END TO BE CLEARLY SEEN. THE VISIBILITY IS EVEN REDUCED BECAUSE OF THE RAISED TRAIN TRACK, THE WESTWARD TURN OF THE ROAD, AND THE FAIRLY TALL BUILDINGS IN FRONT OF THE SITE. THE WALL PROVIDES A DOMINANT FEATURE TO THE BUILDING AND ATTEMPTS TO ATTRACT THE ATTENTION OF THE PEOPLE FROM FAR DISTANCE. IT ALSO HIDES MOST OF THE BUILDING INTRIGUING PEOPLE TO EXPLORE WHAT IS BEHIND IT. THE WALL CAN ALSO BECOME A CANVAS FOR THE LOCAL ARTISTS, AN EXHIBITION SPACE, OR EVEN WITH THE ADVANCEMENT IN SMART CITIES AND SMART LIVING, IT HAS THE POTENTIAL OF CHANGING INTO AN INFORMATION BOARD.

THE OPEN SPACE BETWEEN THE TWO PARTS OF THE BUILDING WHICH IS CONNECTED THROUGH THE RAMP IS ABOVE THE EMPTY LAND OF THE RAILWAY STATION WITH NO OTHER BUILDINGS IN THE VICINITY, AND THEN IT IS ONLY THE MAIN ROAD SEPARATING IT FROM THE SEA. IT PROVIDES A NICE EXPERIENCE WITH AN UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW OVER THE EASTERN PARTS OF THE CITY AND OVER THE BAY OF HAVANA. THE VARIOUS LARGE OPENINGS ALLOW FOR NATURAL VENTILATION AND ARE COVERED WITH TIMBER BLINDS WHICH ALLOW FOR THE AIR MOVEMENT IF CLOSED, ANS ALSO PROVIDE WITH SEMI-TRANSPARENCY WHICH CREATES A LESS INTIMIDATING SPACE.

GROUND FLOOR CONSIDERING THE LARGE NUMBER OF OLD VEHICLES IN CUBA AND THE NEED FOR THEIR REPAIR, THE GROUND FLOOR CONSISTS OF THE MECHANICAL WORKSHOPS AND REPAIRS. THE HEAVY MACHINERY REQUIRED FOR HEAVY INDUSTRY ARE ON THIS LEVEL. WITH THE CORE, THEY ARE THE ONLY PARTS OF THE BUILDING TOUCHING THE GROUND. THE PLAN CONSISTS OF A FEW SPACES WHICH ARE WELL CONNECTED AND SEPARATED THROUGH VERTICAL SHUTTERS ALLOWING FOR AN EASY MOVEMENT WITHIN THEM. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE PATH WHICH CARS MAY CROSS THROUGH THE BUILDING SITE ENTERING FROM ONE SIDE AND EXITING FROM THE OTHER END, AS THE WIDTH IS VERY LIMITED. THERE IS AN ACCESSIBLE TOILET ON THIS FLOOR WITH SHOWERING FACILITY ON THIS LEVEL.
52
THE RAMP INITIATES CLOSE TO THE CORE OF THE BUILDING AND AT THIS LEVEL THE MOST VISIBLE ELEMENTS ARE THE STEEL COLUMNS WHICH GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE RAILWAY TRACK HAVE BEEN EXTENDED WITHIN THE SITE.

FIRST FLOOR WITH THE RISE TO THE NEXT LEVEL THE MORE FINER SKILLS WILL BE ACCESSIBLE. THE FIRST FLOOR IS THE INTELLECTUAL AND COMPUTER BASED SKILLS. THESE ACTIVITIES REQUIRE SCREENING EQUIPMENT, DESK AND CHAIRS AND MEETING FACILITATES FOR GROUP WORK. ALSO HAVING A SMALL KITCHEN WILL BE USEFUL AFTER WORKING FOR LONG HOURS. CONSIDERING THE MORE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THERE ARE SEVERAL TOILETS PROVIDED ALONG WITH AN ACCESSIBLE ONE. THE RAMP AT THIS LEVEL BECOMES WIDER AND THE SLOPE ENTERING THE BUILDING IS PLACED OUTSIDE OF THE EXACT LOWER SEGMENT, CREATING A THEATRE LIKE EXPERIENCE. THE RAMP AFTER THE LANDING AT THE FIRST FLOOR CONTINUES BOTH ALONG THE EDGE OF THE BUILDING OFFERING A COVERED OUTDOOR SPACE, AND ALSO UPWARD TO THE SECOND FLOOR MAKE ITS NEXT NARROW LOOP. UPON ENTERING, THE SMALL ADMIN AND RECEPTION SPACE WELCOMES THE VISITORS AND PROVIDES THEM WITH INFORMATION.
54
FROM THIS FLOOR, FOR PROTECTION AGAINST MORNING SUN, ON THE EAST ELEVATION, VERTICAL TIMBER FINS HAVE BEEN PLACED, BLOCKING THE SUN WHILE ALLOWING FOR THE AIR MOVEMENT TOWARDS AND THROUGH THE BUILDING.

SECOND FLOOR THE SECOND FLOOR IS FOR THE ACTIVE PEOPLE WHO FEEL FIT ENOUGH TO RUN UP THE 4 LOOPS OF THE RAMP AND ATTEND A PILATES SESSION ON THIS FLOOR. THIS FLOOR INCLUDES INDOOR ACTIVE SPACES WHICH CAN EXTEND TO THE OUTER AREA BY OPENING THE LARGE TIMBER BLINDS AND USING THE WHOLE SPACE SIMULTANEOUSLY. ALSO THE CEILING ABOVE IS CUT AT SOME PART ALLOWING FOR A DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE AND A SCREENING FACILITY FOR WATCHING A FILM OUTSIDE IN THE WARM EVENINGS OF HAVANA. THE END PART OF THE FLOOR HAS BEEN STEPPED RESEMBLING THE SEATS OF AN OUTDOOR STAGE AND THE CUT OFF FROM THE CEILING ALLOWS FOR THOSE ON THE UPPER FLOOR TO ENJOY THE EVENTS HAPPENING HERE, OR WATCH THE SCREENING, IF THEY WISH. THIS LEVEL ONLY PROVIDES WITH ONE ACCESSIBLE TOILET AS THE MAIN SERVICES ARE ON THE FLOOR ABOVE.
56
THE LAST LOOP OF THE RAMP TERMINATES ON THIS FLOOR AND SIMILAR TO THE FIRST FLOOR IT CONTINUES ALONG THE EDGE OF THE BUILDING CREATING A WALKWAY (PROTECTED BY THE VERTICAL FINS AND COVERED BY THE ROOF ABOVE), ALLOWING FOR DIRECT ACCESS TO THE OPEN EVENT SPACE AT THE OTHER END, INSTATED OF CROSSING THROUGH THE BUILDING AND INTERRUPTING THE YOGA SESSION HAPPENING IN THE CLASS. IT ALSO ALLOWS FOR THE FIRST ENTRANCE OF THE WALL TO THIS SIDE.

THIRD FLOOR THE THIRD FLOOR IS THE LEVEL THAT THE AUXILIARY PART OF THE BUILDING APPEARS. THE HALF OF THE THIRD FLOOR, THAT IS ON THE MAIN BUILDING IS MOSTLY REFRESHING AREA, WITH SHOWERS, TOILETS, A SMALL KITCHEN AND ITS LOUNGE. THESE ARE ALL AT THIS LEVEL MAKING A CLEAR CONTINUES AREA ON THE SECOND FLOOR. AS MENTIONED EARLIER THE FLOOR AT THIS LEVEL IS SMALLER THAN THE LOWER ONE CREATING A SMALL AMPHITHEATRE OR EVENT SPACE ALLOWING MORE AUDIENCE FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE SECOND FLOOR. THE OTHER HALF IS ACCESSIBLE BY THE BRIDGE WHICH TRAVELS ALONG THE WALL AND ALL TOGETHER WITH THE FLOORS ABOVE MAKE A SMALL INDEPENDENT CLUB. THIS FLOOR HAS A SMALL INDOOR SCREENING AREA, AN INDOOR SOCIAL SPACE, SUCH AS A SNOOKER CLUB, A LITTLE BAR AND A FEW OUTDOOR SEATS. SIMILAR TO THE MAIN BUILDING THE EASTERN PART IS PROTECTED BY VERTICAL TIMBER FINS TO REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF THE DIRECT SUN RAYS.
58
THE FIRE EXIT OPENS ONTO THE WALL AND TRAVELS DOWNWARD TO THE LEVEL OF THE RAMP ON ITS FOURTH LOOP AND THEN FROM THERE FOLLOWING THE RAMP TO THE GROUND.

FOURTH FLOOR THE FOURTH FLOOR IS THE SOCIAL FLOOR OF THE CLUB. ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BUILDING THIS FLOOR IS THE DINING AREA, WITH BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES AVAILABLE. HAVANA BEING HOT HAS A VIBRANT OUTDOOR LIFE AND MOST OF THE TIME PEOPLE ENJOY BEING OUTSIDE. FOR THE SAME REASON THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING MOST SPACES HAVE LARGE OPENINGS WITH TIMBER BLINDS ALLOWING FOR THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR AREAS TO MERGE.
60
THE OTHER CHANGE ON THIS FLOOR ON THE MAIN SIDE, IS ITS FURTHER SETTING BACK FROM THE EDGE OF THE BUILDING WHICH REDUCES THE SOLAR GAIN OF THIS LEVEL EVEN MORE, AND A MORE PLEASANT DINING DURING THE DAY.

FIFTH FLOOR THE FIFTH FLOOR IS THE MANAGEMENT AND REVENUE LEVEL. ALTHOUGH AS MENTIONED THE CLUB IS MAINTAINED AND SUPPORTED BY THE MEMBERS BUT TO ENSURE THE LIFE OF THE CLUB, AND CUBA BECOMING A POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION, ON THIS LEVEL ALONG WITH THE MANAGEMENT AND ADMIN OFFICES, THERE ARE THREE SMALL GUSTS HOUSES. FOLLOWING THE SAME PATTERN THE FIFTH FLOOR SETS FURTHER BACK CREATING AN OUTDOOR WALKWAY IN FRONT ON THE BUILDING. THESE HAVE BEEN SET ON THIS LEVEL TO ENSURE THE SAFETY AND BEING AWAY FROM THE REGULAR DAILY USE OF THE CLUB, OFFERING MORE PRIVACY TO THE OCCUPANTS. THE BIGGER ONE WITH A PRIVATE BALCONY LOOKING OVER THE EAST OF THE CITY IS ON THE MAIN BUILDING AND TWO SMALLER ONES WHICH SHARE THE SAME AREA ARE ON THE AUXILIARY SECTION OF THE BUILDING, AND SIMILAR TO THE LOWER FLOORS THE TWO SECTIONS OF THE BUILDING ARE CONNECTED BY THE BRIDGE.
62
THE FIRE ESCAPE OF THE AUXILIARY PART ALSO RUNS IN FRONT OF THE WALL MEETING THE EXITS OF THE FOURTH AND THE THIRD FLOOR ON ITS WAY DOWN.

THE STRUCTURAL SUPPORT FOR THE WALL CONSISTS OF THE STEEL COLUMN AND THE INTERNAL PARTS IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE A UNIFIED STRUCTURE WHICH HOLDS AGAINST THE HEIGHT AN D THE WIND. THE WALL IS STRENGTHENED WITH SOME BRICKS PLACED PERPENDICULAR TO THE MAIN COURSE (THIS ALSO PROVIDES A SMALL GAP IN THE WALL AT THESE PLACES ALLOWING THE WIND TO PASS THROUGH THE WALL AND REDUCING ITS RESISTANCE) , AND THE ADDITION OF THE WALL TIES BETWEEN THE BRICKS. THE USE OF RECLAIMED BRICK FOR THE WALL AS MENTIONED EARLIER, ITS SHADING QUALITY, AND BEING A SOLAR CHIMNEY ALL HELP TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE CONSTRUCTION.

2-THE FOUNDATION ON THE FAR SIDE (IN RELATION TO THE WALL) IS THICKER AND HEAVIER, SO IT CAN WITHSTAND THE MOMENTUM PRODUCED BY THE WALL PULLING AWAY FROM THE BUILDING. 3- PROPER HAND RAILING AT THE EDGES ASSURES THE SAFETY OF THE USERS. 4-THE VERTICAL TIMBER FINS ON THE EAST SIDE PROTECT AGAINST MORNING SUNSHINE. THEY ARE TIMBER WHICH WILL REFLECT AND RADIATE LESS HEAT, AND WOULD NOT BEND, MELT OR STRETCH UNDER THE SUN. 5- THE LARGE OPENINGS ALLOW FOR AIR TO FREELY MOVE AND HELP WITH NATURAL VENTILATION.
N
6-THE CROSSED TENSION CABLES CHANNEL THE TENSION UPON THE STRUCTURE TO BE DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE WHOLE OF IT, AND ALSO ALLOW FOR THE COMPRESSION TO BE PASSED TO THE GROUND VIA VARIOUS PATHS, PREVENTING FROM EXCESS LOAD ON A PARTICULAR PART.
7-AT EACH FLOOR LEVEL THERE IS A HORIZONTAL BEAM (ILLUSTRATED IN LATER DRAWINGS) WHICH NOT ONLY CONNECTS THE BUILDING TO THE WALL BT THE PERPENDICULAR BEAMS ATTACHED TO IT, BUT ALSO PROVIDES A BASE FOR THE ROWS OF BRICK STACKED UPON IT. 8- THE BREAK BETWEEN THE TWO PARTS OF THE BUILDING ALLOW FOR DAYLIGHT TO ENTER, AND PENETRATE TO THE LOWER FLOORS. IT ALSO LETS THE AIR TO RAISE AND PREVENT IT FROM BEING TRAPPED IN THE CENTRE OF THE BUILDING. 9- THE MAIN FIRE EXIT OPENS TO OUTDOOR SPACE 10- RAISING THE FLOORS, THE OPEN STRUCTURE OF THE GROUND LEVEL, AND THE LIFTED WALL ALLOW FOR UNOBSTRUCTED MOVEMENTS AND EXTRA VISIBILITY OF THE AREA AT THE EYE LEVEL, THAT IS ALREADY TIGHTENED AND RESTRICTED BY THE PRESENCE OF THE RAISED AND DOMINANT RAILWAY TRACK.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING PROVIDES A BED FOR THE FLOORS TO BE LAID UPON. THIS ALLOWS FOR AN UNOBSTRUCTED SURFACE WHICH THE WALLS COULD BE PLANNED FLEXIBLY. IT PREVENTS THE STRUCTURE TO BECOME A SOLID FIXED ENTITY WITH NO POSSIBILITY TO CHANGE OR ADAPT TO NEW PROGRAMMES. 1- THE CORE IS PLACED AT THE CENTRAL PART OF THE BUILDING. IT NOT ONLY ACTS AS THE THOROUGHFARE FOR THE USERS OF THE BUILDING, A CHANNEL FOR SERVICE PIPES, AND THE SAFE PASSAGE IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, BUT ALSO IS AN ELEMENT THAT HELPS THE INTEGRITY OF THE WALL BEHIND IT BY ANCHORING PARTS OF THE WALL TO IT.

2- FROM THE SECOND FLOOR UPWARD, THE BUILDING HAS AN ADDITION TO IT, THEREFORE THERE IS AN EXTRA FIRE ESCAPE WHICH MOVES TO THE FRONT OF THE WALL.

3- EACH FLOOR HAS BEEN DESIGNED ACCORDING TO HE PROGRAMME AND PLACED ON THE FLOOR. NONE OF THE WALLS HAVE LOAD BEARING FUNCTION AND THUS CAN BE SLIM AND LIGHT, REDUCING THE LOAD PUT ON THE BUILDING, AND ALLOWING FOR A LIGHTER STRUCTURE.

1-ON EACH FLOOR ON THE OUTDOOR PART OF IT, THERE IS A GUTTER RUNNING PARALLEL TO THE BUNDLING AND CLOSE TO THE WALL PREVENTING RAIN WATER OR ANY OTHER EXCESS FLUID ENTERING THE BUILDING. THIS GUTTER RUNS AROUND THE BUILDING ON THE FLOOR AND TERMINATES AT THE COLLECTING SYSTEM AND CARRIED DOWN THROUGH THE PIPES IN THE SERVICE DUCT INTO THE MAIN CORE. 2- EACH SERVICE AREA ON THE FLOOR HAS BEEN HIGHLIGHTED TO CLARIFY THEIR OVERALL CONNECTION AND PLACEMENT. 3- EACH BLOCK ON THIS DRAWING REPRESENTS THE SAME SERVICE AREA ON THE SAME FLOOR OF THE MIDDLE DRAWING MENTIONED AT (2). 4- FOR EACH SERVICE AT LEAST HOT AND COLD WATER PIPES, AND WASTE WATER PIPE HAS BEEN SHOWN. 5- THERE ARE EXTRA HOT WATER PIPES ALONG THE WALL USING THE HEAT GAIN OF THE WALL TO STAY WARM WHICH IS SHOWN LATER AGAIN. 6- THE WALL ALTHOUGH IS MOSTLY COVERED BY THE BUILDING AND LESS EXPOSED TO RAIN ON THE CONSTRUCTED SIDE, YET AT THE BOTTOM HAS A SEPARATE GUTTERING SYSTEM WHICH CARRIES THE EXCESS WATER TO THE GROUND ALONG SOME COLUMNS AND THEN TO THE RESERVOIR IN THE PLANT ROOM.

1-THE HORIZONTAL BEAMS WITHIN THE WALL CARRY THE LOAD PRODUCED BY THE WEIGHT OF THE BRICKS. THEY ARE REGULAR BEAMS WITH HEXAGON CUT OUTS AND SPLIT IN HALF, THEN WELDED TOGETHER MAKING A WIDER BEAM WITH THE SAME STRENGTH. 2- THE RAMP ITSELF IS ATTACHED TO THE MAIN STRUCTURE BUT ON THE WEST, WHICH IS RUNNING ALONG THE WALL, IT IS CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNIONS AND PLACED NEXT TO THE WALL WHICH PROVIDES BOTH STABILITY TO THE WALL AND SUPPORT FOR THE RAMP. 3- THE WALL IS FACING WEST AND EXPOSED TO SUNLIGHT, HAVING A RELATIVELY HIGHER TEMPERATURE. A SET OF HOT WATER PIPES ARE ATTACHED TO THE WALL TO USE THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF THE BRICKS TO KEEP THE WATER HOT ALONG ITS DISTRIBUTION THROUGH THE BUILDING. THESE PIPES ARE IN ADDITION TO THE MAIN ONES TO PREVENT ANY SHORTAGE SHOULD THE WALL OR THE PIPES NEED TO BE REPAIRED. 4-THE PLANT ROOM IS LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT. THE RESERVOIR FOR THE RAIN WATER DRAINAGE AND THE SERVICE MACHINERY ALL ARE LOCATED AT THIS PART. IT IS LOCATED AT THE LOWEST LEVEL OF THE SERVICE DUCT, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CORE.

WARM AIR LEAVING
PS
THE WALL IS FACING TOWARDS WEST AND IS DIRECTLY HEATED BY THE SUN. THE EMPTY SPACE BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE WALL WOULD FACE AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE FROM THE HOT WALL, RESULTING IN THE AIR RISING UPWARD. THIS RAISE OF AIR WILL CREATE VACUUM AND THU THE AIR FROM OUTSIDE AND FROM THE LOWER LEVELS, WILL BE MOVING IN THE BUILDING THROUGH THE LARGE OPENINGS, TO REPLACE THE LOST AIR. THE PROCESS CONTINUES AND CREATES AN ENHANCED VENTILATION WITH FRESH AIR FROM OUTSIDE, CONSTANTLY REPLACING THE AIR OF THE BUNDLING. HEATED WALL BY SUN

THE WALL AND THE GAP BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE WALL ACT TOGETHER SIMILAR TO A SOLAR CHIMNEY. AS THE AIR TEMPERATURE IN THIS SPACE GRADUALLY INCREASES, IT WILL MOVE UPWARD.
N
SUNLIGHT
DAYLIGHT
THE BUILDING IS IN A NORTH-SOUTH DIRECTION, WITH A SLIGHT DEVIATION TO NORTHEAST, THUS MOST OF THE BUILDING RECEIVES ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT. THE NORTH FACING SECTION IS MOSTLY DEDICATED TO PARTS OF THE PROGRAMME WHICH BENEFIT FROM DAY LIGHT, AND THE PARTS WHICH REQUIRED LESS LIGHT WERE PLACED CENTRALLY. THE OPENING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING, WHERE THE RAMPS ARE LOCATED ON THE LOWER LEVELS, CREATES A LIGHT WELL ALLOWING FOR SUNLIGHT, BUT MOSTLY DAYLIGHT TO PENETRATE INTO THE BUILDING. A SMALL PORTION OF THE BUILDING IS DIRECTLY FACING SOUTH, AND WITH SET BACKS THE STRENGTH OF THE SUNLIGHT OVER THE HABITABLE PARTS HAVE BEEN REDUCED, OR THE ROOMS WHICH DO NOT NEED OPENINGS, SUCH AS THE THEATRE HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED ON THAT PART.,

THE SHADOW STUDY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR SHOWS THAT BESIDE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING MOST OF THE TIME THE BUILDING ONLY WOULD CAST SHADOW ON ITSELF, AND ON THE EMPTY LAND BEHIND IT, OR ON THE TRACKS OF THE RAILWAY STATION. HAVING SHADOW OVER ITSELF WOULD BE BENEFICIAL CONSIDERING THE HOT CLIMATE OF CUBA, HELPING WITH NATURAL VENTILATION.
THE BUILDINGS COVERED BY THE SHADOW IN THE MORNING ARE THE CAR PARK, IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING AND THE REST ARE MOSTLY ABANDONED, EMPTY OR OFFICES WHICH WILL NOT BE OPEN UNTIL LATER HOURS OF THE DAY
