A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS Thank you to the whole team for pulling together our Spring 2020 issue. I’d especially like to thank our editor-in-chief, Kallan Koch, for doing the heavy lifting.

I’m writing this note while sailing on the Caribbean, so I’m definitely in a spring mood. In the real estate market, buyers seem motivated so far – but it’s still early and we may see another shortage of inventory. Buyers might be in a good mood due to low interest rates. It’s even possible that some of the large-scale exits in the stock market lately are in fact going to real estate. And apart from its investment value, nothing is more enjoyable and better for family time than waterfront property in Muskoka.

Spring adds new life and new beauty – it puts a smile on our face and a spring in our step! One of my favourite days of the entire year is when the final thin layer of ice breaks apart on my lake revealing open water once again! Seeing that sun sparkle on the water like diamonds builds an excitement and anticipation for what’s to come! And I must admit winter was kinder on us this year for which we are thankful!

6 SPRING 2020 ■

If your business or your kids’ schools should close due to coronavirus, why not open the cottage early this year and ride it out in the fresh air and relaxed lifestyle of Muskoka? Being in the country not only provides a lower risk of exposure than in higher density areas, but it could prove a great way to reconnect with your family, and help relieve the fear that is such an unfortunate part of outbreaks like this one.

This issue will bring you up to speed on the fantastic development at the Wharf in Gravenhurst and the restoration of the iconic steam yacht Wanda III! You will be introduced to a new company Toja that provides outdoor furniture, without breaking the bank. And lastly, Chef René who incidentally catered my daughter’s wedding, shares his “secret sauce” on how he connects with engaged couples to make their day extra special!

We have missed a lot of you over the winter – those that enjoy 3-season cottages eagerly await the “May 2-4” weekend and we will welcome you back with open arms with our spring issue at your door!

There is something about the drive up to the cottage that brings an overwhelming feeling of joy. Memories start flooding back as we proceed slowly down the tree covered dirt road to a place of comfort and familiarity. I begin to recall all of the traditions and adventures we would share only at the cottage.

Kallan Koch

Also, as I discuss in my article in this issue, I’m trying to find optimism in the midst of a recent scare: the coronavirus pandemic. Existential threats like this have a way of focusing our minds on what really matters: our families, our good health, and doing our part to protect society and the planet.

In this issue, we highlight the importance of family by giving you a sneak peak at Cayman Marshall’s winter getaway in Mont Tremblant and how building strong internal relationships build a strong business. We also share with you our experience at the first annual Enliven Gala held at Canvas Brewery in Huntsville, which helped raise nearly $22,000 for its programs to enhance the lives of those living with cancer.

Spring at the cottage is all about re-experiencing those precious moments with friends and family, after a long winter in the city. It’s about sitting on the dock, listening to lapping water as the sun sets over the lake. It’s about leisurely walks through the woods and finding the first mushrooms of the season. It’s about bonfires and toasted marshmallows on cool nights. It’s all these things and more, creating lasting memories that we are so eager to share with the next generation. Though cottage season may be short, these memories last a lifetime.

How to improve on a perfect

Toja takes the best part of summer at the cottage – lounging in the sun – and makes it more comfortable, with outdoor furniture that’s beautiful and durable without costing a (suntanned) arm and a leg. BY GERALD LEVITCH

A

perfect, sunny day is a terrible thing to waste sitting indoors, especially when you’re at the cottage. You want to gather your friends and family around the grill or just relax on the dock with some cool drinks, but where to put them?

Toja Patio began by designing their furniture with comfort and quality in mind.

You might think it’s easy to find quality and affordable outdoor furniture. But it’s not. Toja Patio began by designing their furniture with comfort and quality in mind. Unlike most other outdoor living companies, Toja was able to keep their prices affordable by selling their premium quality products directly to consumers, bypassing the usual distributors and retailers. Toja Patio Furniture is uniquely modular and offers transitional design configurations. Depending on the occasion and the number of guests, you could start with a sectional sofa, then add or subtract sections, put the ottoman where it’s needed, and toss on some extra cushions, maybe in different colours. They also realized the advantages of diversifying their product line by selling a wide variety of outdoor furnishings: rattan furniture, pergolas, outdoor bean bag chairs, and furniture covers. What started as a few patio furniture pieces is now an exploding outdoor living brand that keeps growing. SPRING 2020 13 ■

I

n 2017 Toja Grid started modestly, with the simple idea of building a hammock. This hammock is not the kind that you string between a couple of trees, but one that looks more like an outdoor, four-poster bed, with a sailcloth sheet instead of a mattress. Eventually, the concept morphed into a pergola, similar to a gazebo, but square (or rectangular) instead of round or octagonal. To simplify the frame, Toja invented a doit-yourself pergola kit with heavy-duty steel brackets to connect a frame of sturdy wooden posts. Toja Grid Modular Pergola System, as it is known, uses a Shade Sail, made out of weatherproof fabric, to create easyto-install shaded areas or side panels for privacy. Toja is also known for its Toja Sail Marine Bean Bag chairs. A great alternative to the traditional Muskoka chair, the bean bags are made of Sunbrella® Marine Fabrics. It’s an easy way to provide temporary seating on a boat. Also, they are impervious to the winds, rains and spray from passing motorboats, and they can be easily tossed below deck when they’re no longer needed. Today, Toja Patio Furniture is sold direct-to-retail out of their retail location and online at toja.ca. Toja Grid brackets and pergola kits are getting wide distribution across North America and Europe while shipping free online through tojagrid.ca. Toja is the hidden gem that may become an outdoor living brand like no other, providing simple solutions for outdoor living with the utmost quality. Their unique and durable outdoor furniture solves the challenge of what to do about a perfect, sunny day.

Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre

BUILDING A BETTER

CULTURAL HUB

The Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre (MSDC), based at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst, operates the historic and iconic steamships R.M.S Segwun and Wenonah II and presents Muskoka’s dynamic heritage at its Muskoka Discovery Centre (MDC). Positioned as a cultural hub for Muskoka, it exists to ensure that all residents and visitors will know, appreciate and experience the diverse culture and natural heritage of Muskoka.

They have broken ground on a new building that is connected to the Muskoka Discovery Centre. The building (so far unnamed) will host three new permanent exhibits that focus on Muskoka in a national context.

1.

The Stanley Meek Gallery will explain how Muskoka came to be what it is today, during one of the most dynamic and innovative periods in Muskoka and Canadian history.

3.

The Indigenous Gallery features the Indigenous people, the Anishinaabe, and tells the story of the 5,000-year-old Indigenous site of Mnjikaning. Located on the second floor, the 3,000 sq.ft. exhibit will explore the richness and diversity of First Nations culture and history with stories told by Indigenous people.

Every pile is welded shut at the bottom end, then driven into bedrock and filled with concrete, it makes for a very solid and long-l asting foundation.

THE TOTAL PROJECT COST IS $5.5 MILLION. THEY HAVE RAISED CLOSE TO 55% OF THE REQUIRED FUNDING AND ARE SEEKING FURTHER FINANCIAL SUPPORT. Architect Trevor McIvor designed the new building to be separate from and contrast with the heritage design of the Discovery Centre. His bold design stimulates the imagination and is an energy-efficient structure. The broad band around enhances its connection with the landscape. It might look contemporary, but its origins can be traced back to a trend that started 60 years ago. The building is a timber frame prelaminated beam structure provided by nationally acclaimed Timber Systems of Markham. Exhibit space was created on two levels adjacent to the Wanda III. The total project cost is $5.5 million. They have raised close to 55% of the required funding and are seeking further financial support through individual donors, foundations and government to build the unique permanent exhibits and finish the restoration of Wanda III. During the winter a de-icer, a motion-generating device on a timer placed six to eight feet below the water’s surface, will keep ice from weighing down the underwater bracing. The deck floor will be made of Cumaru, known also as Brazilian teak, a long-lasting, “beautiful hardwood in shades from reddish to a lighter brown and everything in between,” Spoerndli says. “It should last at least 50 years.”

Chef René draws inspiration from couples’ love stories and the rugged, natural beauty of Muskoka to create unforgettable wedding meals By Emma Lovell SPRING 2020 21 ■

There are a few questions that Chef René asks every couple as he prepares to cater their wedding. Surprisingly, these questions have nothing to do with the guest list, the venue or the budget. “The very first thing I want to know is where they’ve spent time together,” says Chef René. “I ask about what made them happy there and what food has connected the two of them.” René uses their answers to hone in on who they are as a couple and what is important to them, which in turn inspires the menu. René recalls a couple who came to him last year looking for a traditional meat-and-potatoes dinner. As soon as he asked about their life together, they proceeded to describe the 52 countries they had travelled to and the many incredible dishes they’d discovered together.

CHEF RENÉ AND HIS TEAM SPECIALIZE IN CATERING MUSKOKA WEDDINGS AT VENUES THAT ARE OFTEN REMOTE OR OUTDOORS, WITH NO FORMAL KITCHEN FACILITIES. HE’LL DESIGN THE MENU AND SERVICE TO COMPLEMENT THE SETTING, RATHER THAN COMPETE WITH IT. THE RESULT IS A RUSTIC ELEGANCE THAT FITS IN PERFECTLY WITH THE RUGGED NATURAL BEAUTY.

22 SPRING 2020 ■

Inspired by their story, Chef René created a tapas-style tasting menu with 28 different dishes from all over the world – dishes like Turkish cigars (a rolled pastry filled with creamy feta and spinach), a vegetable stew with harissa from Morocco, pakoras from India, and a picanha steak with chimichurri sauce from South America. “It became a full-blown food experience,” he says. “A far cry from meat and potatoes. They wanted their guests to experience what they felt was so beautiful about their lives together. It was just so real.” From large, elaborate meals to simpler, more intimate parties, Chef René is always seeking to create an experience at weddings, both with the food that’s on offer and the way that it’s served. Chef René and his team specialize in catering Muskoka weddings at venues that are often remote or outdoors, with no formal kitchen facilities. He’ll design the menu and service to complement the setting, rather than compete with it. The result is a rustic elegance that fits in perfectly with the rugged natural beauty that inspires so many couples to host their weddings in Muskoka.

SPRING 2020 23 ■

“AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT’S ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE THERE, SHARING A UNIQUE MOMENT IN A REMARKABLE SETTING.” – CHEF RENÉ

“It’s all about capturing the spirit of the occasion,” René says. “It actually has nothing to do with me or my food or the beauty of a well-laid banquet table. At the end of the day, it’s about the people that are there, sharing a unique moment in a remarkable setting.” One of the most memorable weddings Chef René catered was an intimate party on an island in Georgian Bay. The venue was an historic cabin perched on a small, rocky outcrop, 15 minutes by boat from the landing. René designed a menu inspired by the breathtaking setting, featuring fresh caught panko-crusted pickerel pulled from the very waters that lapped at the island’s shores. The tables were set out on the dock, with strings of lights and white candles offering the only illumination other than the twinkling stars overhead.

“A great meal creates a sense of

togetherness and friendship.

That connection through food is real and it’s important.” “It was so magical,” says Chef René. “There was no pretense at all. It just showed their appreciation for where they were and who they were with. That’s what it really comes down to.” René’s commitment to authenticity, both in working with the rustic elegance of the Muskoka landscape and in designing menus inspired by the couple’s love story, is apparent in every decision he makes. His favourite and most popular service

for weddings is family-style, with large bowls of vegetables and platters of fish and meats passed between friends. “Seeing people happy and sharing food is what I love,” he says. “A great meal creates a sense of togetherness and friendship. That connection through food is real and it’s important.”

Chef René’s Indonesian Shrimp INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 tbsp coconut oil

2 tbsp ginger, grated 2 tbsp garlic, grated

2 tbsp turmeric, grated 2 Thai peppers, thinly sliced (not seeded) 1 can of coconut milk

1 tbsp sweet soya sauce ½ cup chopped cilantro 1 lb shrimp (31-40), deveined and shelled

Heat a cast iron pan over the grill. Add the coconut oil, allowing it to melt and warm. Once it has warmed, add the ginger, garlic, turmeric, Thai peppers, coconut milk and sweet soya sauce. Allow this to come to a boil and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook until they begin to curl. When there is ¼ inch between the tail and body, the shrimp are ready to be removed from the heat; make sure not to overcook. Serve and enjoy hot.

A lovely pairing with Noble Estates’ Black Station Chardonnay

THE STORY BEHIND THE RECIPE This simple, tasty dish brings together flavours from India and Indonesia like ginger, turmeric, garlic, lemongrass and coconut milk. It was included on the menu for Chef René’s well-travelled couple last year. “The moment I mentioned lemongrass and coconut milk, their recollection of their travels in Southeast Asia was instant,” he says. “They were taken back to the bazaar in Indonesia where they first tasted the dish. Flavour has this incredible ability to transport you to a place of adventure. I like to capture that feeling in the menus I create for weddings.”

Pride Marine’s selection of powerboats from Bryant, Nautique and other top brands gives Muskoka cottagers plent y of ways to enjoy summer on the lake.

N

othing says Muskoka in summer more than an afternoon out boating. And whether your passion is cruising, surfing (or skiing) the waves, or just riding into town for supplies or visiting friends across the lake, the latest models from Nautique, Bryant, Chris-Craft, Sea Ray and others take Muskoka’s favourite pastime to a new level. And the best place to see them in action is at one of Pride Marine Group’s 10 locations – according to the company, some 92% of Ontario boating happens within one hour of a Pride Group location. Pride carries all the top brands in freshwater boating, PWCs and accessories. The company also has a great selection of pre-owned as well as new boats, offering the warranty and service reassurance that a private sale can’t provide. This year, Pride is particularly excited about the newest kid on the dock, so to speak: Bryant, which after its recent union with Nautique, offers the perfect blend of performance, features and style.

Click here to visit Pride Marine Group

SPRING 2020 27 ■

“Bryant boats are made to fill the gap between sport boat and surf boat,” explains the company’s Joe Donoghue. “With a forward-facing drive, these boats offer great performance, create an amazing surf wave, but are also agile and fast. They allow the user to enjoy it like a bowrider and spend a day on the water, or use it as a wakeboat and take their friends and family surfing. They’re very maneuverable, feature the latest in technology and are very stylish.” With the amount of choice in the market nowadays, finding the perfect model for your needs can be daunting. Pride product specialist Caleb Wiles advises that you start by deciding what you’ll be primarily using the boat for. “Right now, we’re seeing a huge trend in the Muskoka market for surfing and wakeboarding,” he notes. “But if you are primarily wanting to use it for cruising and travelling around the lakes, you might look for one of the bowrider types. Bryant is great for that, whereas a brand like Nautique has the power for sports like surfing.” Features like the Nautique Surf System, or NSS, can generate a curl that rivals the best that Ventura Beach or Waikiki can offer. You can adjust the size of the wave to your skill or comfort level, and even 28 SPRING 2020 ■

“Right now, we’re seeing a huge trend in the Muskoka market for surfing and wakeboarding. But if you are primarily wanting to use it for cruising and travelling around the lakes, you might look for one of the bowrider types.”

A powerful motor will get you reliably where you want to go, in calm or choppy weather. customize your own soundtrack. If you’ve never tried it, says Wiles, you’d be surprised at how easy it is to learn. “It’s actually very easy on the joints and quite relaxing, and there are many ways to do the sport.” A powerful motor will get you reliably where you want to go, in calm or choppy weather. But for wakeboarding and surfing, the new power models really have the juice. “The Nautique GS22 has a PCM 300/350hp engine, and that’s among the most powerful you can get. It’s great for people who use the boat as an everyday cruiser,” says Wiles. “But if you want to get into real power, both Nautique and Chris-Craft have models that start at 409 and go up to 550hp. They’re amazing for surfing and wakeboarding – they have the power to pull even a big guy up out of the water!”

One of the most exciting trends in recent years is how purely beautiful powerboats have become. New finishes and colours – inspired by similar advances in automotive finishes, such as metal flake paint – provide the perfect complement to impressive power and features, along with streamlined profiles that make a statement on the water or tied up at the wharf. (Wiles enthuses about a particular beauty he spotted at the recent Toronto Boat Show, the Nautique G23 Paragon, with a sparkle finish that fairly glowed.) Some other extra features you might consider are manual or one-touch fold-down ski towers, allowing you to park the boat in a low-ceilinged boathouse or garage; touchscreen controls; and rear-view cameras (great for spotting and for safely pulling

around to pick up a skier). But one of the most popular extras these days, says Wiles, is theatre-quality sound systems. “These days, you just can’t get a bigger, badder sound system. It’s unbelievable how advanced these systems are today. On the wakeboard boats, the speakers face out the back so the surfer can hear them, and there’s a system called WakeSub which actually produces surround-sound.” Along with cool features like these, safety has come a long way as well. Most modern boats have a deep “dead-rise” (the height of the inside walls), to keep passengers (especially young children) safely inside even in heavy swells, and non-slip deck platforms on the stern and other areas. Wiles says before you buy, you should check the seats, the integrity of the hull and the general fit and finish, as these have an important effect not only on the safety of the craft but its comfort, especially on long rides. “It’s one way Nautique just does it best,” he says. “They have the best fit and finish, the best accessories, the finest attention to detail. They’re always advancing the technology of the product.” Which brings us to Bryant. The company’s recent amalgamation with Nautique means this already

respected brand will gain the benefit of Nautique’s expertise in manufacture, design quality and features. This year, three new Bryant models offer an option for just about every kind of Muskoka boating enthusiast. Bryant C1 Surf: At 21 feet, the C21 Surf is perfect for everyday cruising on the smaller Muskoka lakes, but with no compromise on features. Its 250hp motor is great for both cruising and surfing/skiing, giving you the best of both worlds – in a perfect size for easy docking and transport. Bryant C3 Surf: The next size up from the C1, this 23-foot version adds a sunpad at the stern that operates either manually or electronically, with extra room for passengers. “The C3 Surf is probably the sweet spot; it’s the perfect combination of size and power,” says Wiles. “It’s great for both the smaller and larger lakes, with a deep V hull, surfing capability, and it’s very easy to trailer. I think it will be very popular.” Bryant C7 Surf: At a full 27 feet, “This is a big, bad, beautiful boat,” says Wiles. “It has a fridge and sink onboard, and even a head. It’s designed for big-water surfing, and you can use it on the larger Muskoka lakes, but it’s made for the bigger, choppier waters like Georgian Bay. It’s built to do whatever you need it to do.” Click here to view our 2020 inventory

ART Celebrates LIFE L At Enliven Gala By Martha Uniacke Breen

ocal artists and supporters of The Enliven Centre for Well-being in Cancer got a chance to hobnob and enjoy a glamorous evening at the inaugural Enliven Gala on February 4, World Cancer Day. The Gala, together with a fun-filled outdoor family event known as the Jo-Athlon held earlier in February, raised more than $22,000 for the Centre, and is scheduled to become an annual event.

The Enliven Centre for Well-being in Cancer was launched in 2016 by Allie Chisholm-Smith and Joanne McLean, an active and nature-loving Muskokan who fought stage-four breast cancer before succumbing to the disease two years ago. Joanne’s legacy lives on in the organization she co-founded.

46 SPRING 2020 â–

Enliven is a place that people living with cancer – either those living with a diagnosis, or whose loved ones are living with the disease – can attend workshops, take a yoga or wellness class, and participate in a host of events and programs that will enrich their lives and lets them socialize with like-minded people. The centre offers an antidote to the social isolation that too often affects those living with the disease. “Enliven’s goal is to get people affected by cancer to get out and enjoy life,” says Cat Brown, Enliven board member and part of the Cayman Marshall team, which is a gold sponsor of the Centre. “A cancer diagnosis is not a sentence to stop living. It’s important to continue and live life in every way you can, and Enliven helps people do that.” Held at Huntsville’s newest craft brewery, Canvas Brewing Co., the cocktail-style Enliven Gala attracted some 120 guests, including members of the Cayman

Marshall Muskoka team. The event floor featured the work of local artists for sale through both silent and live auctions. Guests enjoyed nibblies and drinks that included a selection of Canvas Brewing Co.’s own potables, along with the music of local songstress Christina Hutt. One of the more notable donations of the evening came from Soapstones Natural Skincare, a Huntsville-based company that makes all-natural bath and skincare products. Soapstones has created a special Enliven line of products, and donates all proceeds from sales to the Centre. The company’s David McLean presented event organizers with a cheque for $7,500. “We don’t have charity status yet, and operate purely as a not-for-profit organization,” Brown explains. “Without the support of the community, Enliven wouldn’t exist. So events like this are crucial to raise funds as well as awareness.”

“A cancer diagnosis is not a sentence to stop living. It’s important to continue and live life in every way you can, and Enliven helps people do that.” – Cat Brown

OWN YOUR OWN PIECE OF

T

his beautiful, expansive property on the north end of Lake Joseph is your opportunity not only to enjoy what some have called the “prettiest spot in all of Muskoka,” but to own a piece of authentic Muskoka history. The property lies near the site of the old Summit House, one of the storied great hotels of the Gilded Age of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Well-to-do families from the south arrived by steamboat or overland by horse-drawn stagecoach to spend their

summers in the grand Muskoka tradition. The hotel was lost to a fire in 1915. Alizon Hitchman, a young friend of the Fraser family that had bought the land where the hotel once stood, often passed her summers at the Frasers’ cottage in the 1920s. The Kingsland family rented the cottage for a few years until she and her young husband, Norton Kingsland, bought the property nearby and built their own summer house, which they named Tall Timbers. Generations of the Kingsland family’s descendants have continued to live at Tall Timbers even till this day. The property is now

available for another family to build upon and add their own history to this very special place. Blessed with a stunning south exposure and open, unobstructed views of the lake, the 59-acre property features 520 ft. of frontage, a beautiful private beach unlike any other on the lake and four cottage residences. It’s the perfect place to build your dream cottage, family compound, or simply enjoy unspoiled beauty and undisturbed privacy, all within easy distance of amenities and the beauty of Lake Joseph, which has attracted cottagers for over 150 years.

CORONAVIRUS HOW DOES THIS IMPACT

MUSKOKA? By Todd Adair

T

he coronavirus scare is real, and it’s hard to find reasons to stay positive with all the bad news we’ve been hearing lately. The recent stock market bath brought an end to the longest bull market in history, and sent us into a bear market that looks to be with us for a while to come. Meanwhile cases, and the number of deaths, have mounted as the virus has raced throughout the world. What seemed the stuff of science fiction not so long ago has now become everyday life.

constantly exposed to the virus, they are stepping up to save lives and meet the challenge. The same is true of first responders, police, fire and EMS services. I am sure I speak for all Canadians when I say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

In the face of an existential threat like this, many of us are naturally drawn to step back and consider what’s most important in life: family, safety and security, our health and the health of the people we love. It’s an ongoing challenge to remain positive when the news is full of horrors day after day. But it’s important to look for reasons for optimism, and when I look around I see them every day.

Another thing is I am noticing that, for the most part, Canadians are taking seriously the call to follow government safety guidelines such as social distancing. We’re washing our hands frequently, staying home as much as possible, and substituting FaceTime for face-to-face socializing. Statistics are starting to show that these small adjustments in our daily lives are making a measurable difference.

The first is the unflinching heroism of our health care workers all over the country. Despite obstacles that range from a shortage of essential protective equipment to the real danger of being

One indicator we’ve seen here at our business has me hopeful that the economic shock, at least, may be driven more by panic than by underlying weaknesses. In the 2008 recession, real estate sales

basically came to a complete halt. But that has been very far from the case recently – sales in our region have continued to be as healthy as ever, with sales leads up by as much as 40%. With international travel at an all-time low, Ontarians are looking to spend vacation time in our own backyard, which will have positive economic implications that will extend long after the crisis is over. That strikes me as one way to make lemonade out of this lemon we’re all living through. If you and your family are able to leave the city while you adhere to stay-at-home orders, why not open the cottage early and head up to Muskoka for some precious family time? It might help in turning this frightening situation into a great opportunity to reconnect with each other and reflect on what really matters in your life. We Muskokans have the luxury of space, fresh air, and a relatively sparse population (especially compared to larger urban

centres, which are vulnerable to the possible spread of the virus). On the streets of town, I’ve started to run into friends and clients whom I almost never see outside of the summer months, who have come up here to ride out the crisis. We welcome our summer residents at any time of year, even now. But there are a few things we’d like to ask you. First, please continue to observe the same social distancing guidelines you’ve been following at home. That means staying two metres (or the length of one hockeystick) away from anyone you don’t live with. That’s especially important in public areas such as beaches, parks, sidewalks and inside stores.

With

a few sensible precautions, you and your family will be safe.

We also ask that if possible, you could bring provisions and other necessities from home, before you leave for the cottage. Some tourist areas have been reporting local shortages of groceries and other goods, and we don’t have the easy access to suppliers that many urban areas have. Over time, this could 106 SPRING 2020 ■

become a pressing problem for local residents, and for tourists and summer residents too.

family will be safe. Keep in mind that the COVID-19 panic, like all panics, will pass eventually.

Above all, the most important advice I’ve heard is simply not to panic. The overwhelming odds are that with a few sensible precautions, you and your

Here’s hoping that you and your loved ones will come through it all safe, and will continue to enjoy the beauty of Muskoka for many years to come.

Cayman Marshall Conquers

MONTTREMBLANT

By Kallan Koch, Editor-in-Chief, Collections Magazine

Every year, the entire team here at Cayman Marshall closes the door on our offices for a week and heads out together for a group holiday hosted by the company. Sure, it has practical business advantages, our president, Todd Adair, admits. “Seeing another, more relaxed side to the people you work with every day is great for team-building and creates a better, friendlier work environment.” But he feels it’s also a way he can give something back to the people who have worked hard to make Cayman Marshall a success. At the end of January, the team headed to Le Westin Resort & Spa in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, for a week-long winter adventure. Our destination was something of a secret, right up until we pulled up in front of the hotel. All we were told was to pack snow gear, skis and skates if we had them. They also told us to pack a ’70s outfit, but they didn’t tell us why. Shortly after we arrived at Mont-Tremblant, in the heart of the Laurentians, we were given a day and a half to explore the town, get in some skiing, or just relax at the hotel spa. CM Sales Representative and Editor Laura Morrison fell in love with the pretty, Swiss-inspired village. “It was magical, even for a non-skier!” she says. “I loved wandering the shops and restaurants, and enjoyed lots of fun times with my team après-ski.”

Then it was on to several days of serious fun. Spouses of Cayman Marshall employees have long been invited to share in the annual company getaway, but this year, kids were invited along too, making it truly a family event. “I like to think of our team as a family,” says Todd. “Spouses and children endure the long hours that the parents are away selling property in our very short season, so I wanted them to be included in celebrating our success!” In the morning, the group was divided into two teams, the Cayman Marshall team and the spouses-and-kids team, and the Cayman Marshall Olympic Games were on. 108 SPRING 2020 ■

The first challenge was a hockey game at a local rink. Despite fierce competition by the spouses-and-kids team, captained by Todd’s son Cayman, it was the Cayman Marshall team who took the gold. The next day, we all met on the slopes for the slalom meet, where both boarders and skiers competed for the best time. Once again, after a fierce battle, it was the Cayman Marshall team that was victorious.

“My goal when planning this trip was to get the team excited about winter.” – Todd Adair

The final – and for some of us, the most difficult – challenge was the Escape Rooms. While most of the four- to six-person teams managed to get out of their rooms within half an hour or so, others were stumped and had to be rescued. I have to admit, it was a bit embarrassing that some of the kids figured out their rooms right away, while my group struggled!

There were also plenty of special activities just for the kids, from tubing to Virtual Reality experiences, guaranteeing they’d end the week with new friends, just like their parents. And mid-week, kids and grown-ups alike enjoyed a special perspective into the spectacular scenery of the area, with a hike up Mont-Catherine Forest to the 100m high ziplines at Tyroparc. “My goal when planning this trip was to get the team excited about winter. We all tend to think negatively about the snow and cold, but there’s so much fun to be had and I think they all really embraced it and surprised themselves,” says Todd of this year’s getaway. “Many of the group confessed it was the best group trip we’ve done.”

The trip wasn’t all about hard-nosed competition, though. Early in the week, we gathered at a historic old wooden lodge for a plaid-themed Christmas party, where everyone exchanged gifts and danced the night away. Later on in the week, the reason for the ’70s clothes became clear. In a private VIP room in the Resort’s casino, we were treated to a ’70s-themed bash, complete with groovy ’70s decor and disco music, and spent a high-energy night channelling our inner Travoltas.
