EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to 2023, and our first digital edition of the New Year. We hope you’ll enjoy cozying up by a roaring fire with our stories and our newest listings.
For this month’s cover story, “Muskoka Winter Getaways” (p. 64), we’ve rounded up a special selection of private, luxury rentals that are every bit as enjoyable this time of year, when the towns and trails are less crowded, and the crisp winter air seems to make the forest seem “too silent to be real,” as Gordon Lightfoot said long ago. Whether it’s snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or simply cuddling up by a roaring fire as the snow gently falls outside, you haven’t truly experienced our region till you’ve stayed here in wintertime.
Our in-house design team at Cassis Design Studio, Tary Roossien and Meredith Parsons, knows that lighting is one of the most important aspects of decorating – and also one of the most difficult to get right. Turn to page 38, where they’ve put together a no-nonsense set of rules of thumb for perfectly lighting any room, followed up by a run-down of what’s trending in lighting right now. If you’re planning any kind of redecorating project, you should bookmark that page right now.
My thanks as always to our editorial team for another colourful digital issue. And to all of our readers, here’s to the start of another great year in Muskoka!

STOOL CONSOLE TABLEMillion The Dollar
By DC RutherfordIt’s impossible to come away from a conversation with Russell A. Glotfelty and Marco Hussen without feeling the love the two share for art. Recently, I’ve become the proprietor of two properties filled with empty walls and promise - a rural home in Vermont and a family cottage in Ontario.
In conversation with friends in similar positions we share a commonality: What
can we do with our walls to make our house feel like home while impressing ourselves and our guests?
Many of us are terrified both of empty walls and the complicated aesthetic and financial world of art. It’s easy for new collectors to go wrong – what’s real? What's fake? Why is this worth $10,000 and that worth $1,000,000? This is where Axiom comes in.
The main error that people make is assuming that they can't collect art because they are unaware or unsure of the amount of money that they're going to need to spend," says Glotfelty.Russell A. Glotfelty Marco Hussen
the buying process as seamless as possible, and they’re uniquely positioned to fill that role. Hussen’s background is in wealth management and asset management, offering insight into the luxury world, while Glotfelty comes from a long background in the art business, previously owning a prominent art consulting firm for the hospitality trade. But for both, their true love (besides each other) is art. They wanted to bring the sensibilities of a large corporate firm to the residential world and share their affection and expertise to lessen the intimidation that prevents too many from engaging with the communities they love.
“It's a process,” explains Glotfelty. “We sit down with you as our client and learn more about your goals. Are you simply looking to fill walls to ensure you have
something nice to look at? Are you looking to start building a collection or an investment portfolio? Are you looking to trade the work after a certain period? The art world is very similar to the real estate world: you buy, you hold, you sell. And those are the techniques where a market skill set comes in.”
Axiom is a full-service firm, that preaches education, patience, and a collaborative spirit.
“One of the main concepts within our firm (particularly if we're staging your entire house with 30-70 pieces of artwork) is that it doesn't have to be done overnight. It's not like you go to the mall, and you buy it, and they deliver it. We do a lot of wholehouse installations because people like things to be buttoned up quickly and easily.”
Taste doesn't have to be expensive at all times.
Mel Bochner helped pioneer Conceptual Art.
Robert Rauschenberg is world-renowned with works selling for tens of millions.
Alex Katz has worked for almost eight decades pioneering repetitive figures with a flat backdrop.
Mel Bochner • Language is Not Transparent • $50K Alex Katz • Halsey 6 • $1MBut how does a new collector assign value to a market they don’t entirely understand?
“It's about elevation to the lifestyle and education regarding investment,” says Hussen. “Taste doesn't have to be expensive at all times. At different layers of understanding and appreciation, we could make the house look elevated and amazing with pieces from $5,000 to $5 million,” adding that their job is to convey the difference between the price tags.
Take, for example, three pieces currently in the Axiom collection from American artists Mel Bochner, Robert Rauschenberg, and Alex Katz. Conceptual artist Bochner’s “Language is Not Transparent” is priced at $50K, the late Rauschenberg’s “Matinee” for $500K, and figurative artist Katz’s “Halsey 6” is $1M. All three are exceptional works from seminal artists with different appeals based on a collector’s desires and how much they want to invest. But, also, a collection doesn’t exist within the price constraints. Consider Glotfelty and Hussen’s New York apartment, where their own collection ranges in value from $2,500 up to $15 million, all of which hang together in a seamless representation of their tastes, their aesthetics, and their acumen.

A TASTE OF
HOW (AND WHY) TO TRY THE 2023 COLOUR
arguably the most influential, tool in the design toolbox. Colour has the power to change a mood, redefine the function of a room, and even alter our visual perception of the space itself. What else can effectively make your home look and feel bigger and brighter (or warmer and cozier), without you having to suffer through a time-consuming and costly home renovation? Colour is the ticket.
If you’re intimidated by colour, you’re not alone. Some background information on what inspired a trending colour palette and tips on how to use it can help ease the stress.
■
THE “IT” COLOUR
Since it’s one of the world’s leading colour experts, people’s ears perk up when Benjamin Moore announces its much-anticipated “Colour of the Year.” In its annual exercise of choosing a colour of the year selection, the team at Benjamin Moore draws inspiration from both home-grown and global design influences. Furniture, fabrics, fashion, nature, culture, are all trends viewed through a coloured lens. In 2023, it’s all about Raspberry Blush, an alluring and optimistic take on classic red that pulls in touches of coral in a vibrant and joyous expression.
Raspberry Blush reflects a collective desire to re-emerge after a long hiatus holed up at home. This colour is all about getting back out there, feeling good and showing it. It’s confidence personified. Benjamin Moore couldn’t have said it any better in describing their selection as “bold, bolder, boldest” and “the definition of charismatic colour.”
You might say this trend has been building up for some time.
COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS
Every colour needs a consummate companion – something that will make it “pop” in a room and bring out its best. In terms of trends, a complementary colour palette can even help extend its stay on the style stage beyond just one year.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS RASPBERRY
Monochromatic Scheme: A bold choice like this is great as a dominant colour if you want to make a statement in your space. Why not take it a step further, and take it to the walls, trim and furniture, too?
Be forewarned – a monochromatic look requires you to give your full commitment. For those who want to try this look but might be a little wary, give it a go in a smaller room, like a powder room, study or entrance foyer – what a way to say “welcome!” Create interest by layering in lots of texture and a variety of contrasting finishes, such as matte alongside glossy surfaces. Ensure you have enough lighting to highlight focal points and bring dimension to the room.
Neutral Pairings: Neutrals are an effective way to tone down a really bold colour like Raspberry Blush. On the flip side, a vibrant hue can be used to liven up a room when you are using a lot of neutrals, so this match is a win-win. Interestingly, in a perfect pairing to the colour of the year, some other trending hues in Benjamin Moore’s 2023 palette include Tofino Sunset, a dusty neutral pink, and New Age, a light grey shade that’s a fresh take on the classic neutral. These provide a great base for pops of colour and unique design details.
Black & White: This classic combination literally “goes” with everything – including our reddishorange star colour, or in fact whatever the colour of the year happens to be at any given time. If your space is already
decorated in black and white, then layering in any trending colour should be relatively easy and effective for instantly ushering in 2023. Benjamin Moore’s palette includes a selection of off-whites, each with warm, cool and neutral undertones, as well as Onyx, a soft black shade, and Wenge, a dark brown with hints of black and purple. You’ll just have to decide which colour will be your dominant colour, which will be used as the secondary hue, and an accent colour. A good rule of thumb to achieve balance is to stick to a 6030-10 ratio: 60 per cent of the room should be the dominant colour, 30 per cent should be the secondary colour or texture, and the last 10 per cent should be an accent.
BLUSH IS APPEARING IN THE HOME, WHETHER GOING SOLO OR IN SYNC WITH OTHERS.
Colour has the power to change a mood, redefine the function of a room, and even alter our visual perception of the space itself.
In Contrast: Choosing colours that are on opposite sides of the colour wheel, known as contrasting colours, creates an eye-catching conflict that instantly attracts the eye and creates a focal point. This is a great strategy to use for accessories, accent furniture or art. In the case of Raspberry Blush, some contrasting hues may include greens and blues. The trick to hitting the right balance is to choose colours that are similar in intensity. For a saturated hue like Raspberry Blush, steer clear of pastels and try matching it with something that’s equally bold and bright. This ensures each colour in your palette stands out appropriately, versus being washed out.
A little colour can go a long way – so just imagine what a lot of colour can do! Whether you choose to dive into the deep end of this coralcoloured pool or you’re just testing the waters, follow your gut instincts and don’t take it too seriously. Remember: in your home, you’re the boss, and colour is definitely a matter of personal preference and perception. A professional stylist can guide your choices and help you create a colour plan that works in your space and complements your style, but feel free to choose what speaks to you, colour-wise: ultimately, it’s your space and your call.
SURPRISE AND DELIGHT BY ADDING STRATEGIC POPS OF COLOUR IN UNCONVENTIONAL AREAS.
PAINTED PANELS, TRIM OR A CEILING IN RASPBERRY BLUSH ARE A BOLD ADDITION, YET LOW-COMMITMENT AND LOW INVESTMENT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO THE PAINTING YOURSELF.

IDYLWOOD: 7 BEDS, 7 BATHS – LAKE MUSKOKA SUNSET BEACH: 5 BEDS, 5 BATHS – GEORGIAN BAYLighting is arguably the single most impactful and functional component of designing any space. We often see wall sconces that are hung too high, pendant lights that are too low, or chandeliers that are too small and unimpressive for a space.
We decided it was time to set the record straight with our designer-approved guide to hanging light fixtures.
LIGHTING PLACEMENT: RULES OF THUMB
A dining room chandelier should have roughly a 32-to-36-inch clearance between the tabletop and the bottom of the light fixture. The widest part of the chandelier should be about 2/3 the table width.
Island pendants should have roughly a 30-to-36-inch clearance between the countertop and bottom of the pendant. With multiple pendants, allow a minimum of 24 inches in between the base of each fixture.
To determine the ideal fixture for a room in inches, simply add the room’s length and width. (For example, in a 20’ x 20’ room, the fixture should be at least 40 inches wide.) Hang the fixture so the bottom is at least seven feet off the floor; in an entry, hang the fixture at least six inches higher than the door opening.
Bedside wall sconces should be hung roughly 60 inches off the floor. For task lighting, leave roughly six inches between the edge of the bed’s headboard and the edge of the mounting plate.
Bathroom sconces should always be hung at eye level, roughly 60 to 66 inches off the floor. For sconces placed on either side of a mirror, leave roughly four to six inches of space between the mounting plate and mirror. Accent lighting above a bathtub requires at least 8 feet of clearance above the tub rim.
MINIMALIST SHAPES
Look for simple shapes that are subtle yet substantial, great for modern spaces. Lighting like this is particularly effective when used in repetition, allowing you to get creative! The Banda large light complements natural elements like reclaimed wood, stone and neutral tones.
SHAPELY BULBS
Where bulbs used to be hidden, now the shape of the bulb is designed to be seen and incorporated as an important part of the design. Choose lightbulbs that echo the fixture's shape for extra impact.
MATTE BLACK FINISH
Matte black brings sleek sophistication to light fixtures, in styles ranging from retro-inspired to ultramodern. This lighting trend often takes advantage of crisp contrast to create an effect, such as pairing glossy or satiny metals with matte black finishes.
SCULPTURAL SPHERES
Sculptural hanging fixtures like the Modern Rail can fill a large space. This design can be hung as a pendant or chandelier, and looks equally great above a dining table. Sculptural lights create visual interest while adding balance and symmetry.
TRENDS Lighting
BOLD IN GOLD
A satin gold light fixture works as the new neutral, complementing warm wood accents, but can be a statement light in any space. The Esfera is a mid-century-modern chandelier that is sure to light up any space.
OUTDOOR SPACES
Outdoor lighting is no longer an afterthought; outdoor spaces today are designed for living as comfortably as we do indoors. LED path strips, uplighting for stairways, chandeliers, and specialty outdoor fixtures are built with style and safety, creating great entertaining spaces.
NATURAL MATERIALS
Natural textiles like rattan, wood or rope add warmth and an organic feel to a room. The Theta chandelier features whitewashed wood beads that inject a room with relaxed elegance.

Most brokerages advise you to put your property into the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system, in order to get it in front of the greatest number of prospective buyers possible. But when it comes to Muskoka property – especially in the current market – that may not be the best, or even most desirable, route for you.
Cayman Marshall has a better way to market your property, which not only ensures that only serious, wellqualified buyers view your property, but allows you to maintain your privacy and avoid the stress and hustle of listing with MLS.
With a Cayman Marshall exclusive listing, your property will only be visible to members of our proprietary database. Personal viewing appointments are only scheduled after our agents have taken prospective buyers through a careful pre-screening process.
Our system works equally well for buyers. Rather than enduring the “feeding frenzy,” panic-bidding and sometimes, disappointment that accompanies desirable MLS properties, you have the assurance of knowing the property is only being seen by serious, well-qualified prospects like you, and managed exclusively through Cayman Marshall’s offices.
The success of our system speaks for itself: since last August, we’ve sold well over $133 million in exclusive sales alone. Allow us to show you the better way to sell your Muskoka property!
