In an effort to develop 19+ initiatives through their Steps of Pride program and raise awareness surrounding the cause, Somersby Canada and Get REAL have created the University Chapter program, the “Steps of Pride” virtual speaker series and Somersby will be releasing limited-edition cans, available this summer during Copenhagen 2021 WorldPride. With their first initiative, Somersby Canada and Get REAL are teaming up for their University Chapter program to inspire students across Canadian universities to initiate positive changes in their local communities. With resources and programs constructed specifically to empower students to build new skills, Canadian youth are presented with opportunities to expand their networks and their references for postgraduate studies and employment. Resources offered in the University Chapter program include creative, meaningful advocacy campaigns and events, and encouragement to

raise funds and give back to local 2SLGBTQ+ charities (over $10,000 raised to date). The University Chapter Conference is scheduled to launch this fall, where Get REAL will be selecting their very first Chapter-wide advocacy campaign, made possible with Somersby’s continuous support and monetary contributions. At Get REAL, the importance of public speaking is held in high regard, hence the inspiration behind their new annual virtual speaker series, “Steps of Pride.” Having already spoken to over half a million students, teachers, parents, and corporate audiences across Canada, this speaker series is an exceptional opportunity for Get REAL to pass along their learnings and amplify 2SLGBTQ+ voices through assisting speakers with developing and delivering inspiring yet educational speeches. METHOD: 1)

Put the ribs bone side up and separate the tips from the rest with a boning knife. Remove excess fat and turn to the meat side. Cut between the membrane and the bone and grab a piece of the membrane. Slowly pull it away from the ribs.

2) Mix salt, pepper, garlic and two teaspoons of thyme to obtain a homogeneous compound. 3) Mix the mustard, apple vinegar, lemon juice and the remaining two teaspoons of thyme in a small bowl then whisk it to make a vinaigrette. Season to taste and pour in a squeeze bottle. 4) Pour the vinaigrette all over the ribs. 5) Place the ribs vertically in a rib rack and into a roasting pan and bake at 170°C (340°F) near the fire.

SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS:

• 2+2 tsps. thyme

• 2 whole racks of pork ribs

• 4 tbsps. mustard

• 1 tbsp. salt

• 4 tbsps. apple vinegar

• 1 tbsp. black pepper

• ½ lemon

• 1 tbsp. garlic powder

• ½ glass of lemon juice

6) When the ribs are golden, rotate the pan for even cooking. When they are golden all over, take the pan out of the oven. 7) When the meat is tender enough to almost fall off the bones, now it’s time for lunch! 8) Cut into 3-4 rib portions, dress with vinaigrette and garnish with chopped parsley.

AGENT STEVE HADDOCK GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND ON RESALE OF VINTAGE LAKE-HOUSE PROPERTY Steve Haddock had a big problem on his hands. Usually, a custom-designed, 5,200sf cottage on a prime piece of lakefront property kind of sells itself. In fact, the Cayman Marshall agent had already sold the place on Lake Rosseau just the year previously. But now the new owner’s plans had changed and he wanted to put the cottage back on the market. Far from indulging in land speculation, the client figured he’d be taking a bath on the resale. “It’s a remarkable place,” says Haddock. “The former owner had put his heart and soul into it.” But an interior design that offered a turn-of-the-20thCentury hunting lodge aesthetic turned many potential buyers off. Dark wooden panelling, flooring and furniture, heavy wrought-iron lighting fixtures and the occasional display of deer antlers don’t quite speak to today’s vacation market. Indeed, the Arts & Craft cottage’s affectionate neighbourhood nickname was “the steakhouse.” Haddock, after seven years as a real estate agent and with a background in engineering, knew the place’s bones were good. Because of his keen interest in

construction and design and, more to the point, the effort he was willing to put into staging and selling the cottage, the prospect for his client might not prove so bleak. “I love real estate,” Haddock comments. “My dad was an agent, and I always had the bug to do it myself. I think I bring value to my clients with a thorough understanding of structural integrity, local building bylaws and so on, but as I progressed in my field I developed a stronger sense of style and taste in cottage design and furnishing.” He is also a fan of the lifestyle: He and his wife, Maggie, currently share a Lake of Bays cottage with Sadie, their eight-year-old Golden Retriever. In order to coordinate the Rosseau property reboot in time for a spring sale, Haddock

moved into the seller’s boathouse on the property for three weeks, supervising the painting, light construction and changing out of the furniture. Due to Covid restrictions, rental furniture had impossibly long lead-times, so Haddock resorted to cherry-picking home goods off the Wayfair.ca site. He also had everything sent to his house in Toronto, since delivery to the lake district proved difficult to arrange. From there, he drove two large trailerloads up north – and helped assemble the goods when they were unloaded – while at the same time shipping the old furniture off to an auction house.

Haddock has learned over the years that the trick to cottage interiors is signalling a connection with nature: “A place can be very modern, very sleek. However, builders and owners should always include some rustic elements to tie it into the landscape.” A year before, Haddock had tried explaining to potential buyers how a few, relatively simple surface changes could vastly improve the cottage’s appeal. “But they couldn’t see it. So I guess we had to show them.” All in all, he spent $40,000 of his client’s money. The newly refurbished cottage generated a lot of interest and sold in under a month for $1M more than the client had paid for it the previous year. The client, Haddock says, was very happy.

fter a year indoors, it’s no surprise that Canadians are beyond ready to get outside. Whether you’re a Bear Grylls-esque hiker, or glass of wine on the patio in your yoga pants kind of outdoorsy, all of us are craving some of that, sweet, fresh summer air. Naturally, we flock to cottage country. Regularly, summer nights up north are spent with friends - dinner parties, camp fires, boating. Hosting at the cottage is

truly an art to be mastered. But in a world of restrictions, lockdowns, and ever-changing rules, how do we do so safely? Well, we get creative! This year, entertaining is going to require a little more preparation than usual. But, you’re already a stellar host, and with our help, you’ll truly become the hostess with the mostest. Welcome to our guide to entertaining safely this summer.

Keeping It Clean The first thing to keep in mind when planning a small gathering is cleanliness. No, I don’t mean precise vacuum lines satisfyingly engrained in the carpets, sparkling kitchen countertops, or meticulously karate-chopped throw pillows. Those are all bonus points, but your guests can’t appreciate them from the outdoors. This summer, cleanliness is all about hand washing. Setting up a hand washing station outdoors is imperative for safe entertaining. An area reserved for hand sanitizer, paper towels, soap, and a garden hose is really all you need to cover your bases. When your guests feel clean and germ-free, you’ll all be able to relax and safely enjoy each other’s company.

Drinks & Apps With everyone clean and healthy, drinks and apps on the dock are a favourable way to start your afternoon. It’s one of those summer essentials that are still doable this year, so long as we do the proper prep. Your guests will be blown away by the thoughtfulness and creativity you’ve (figuratively and literally) brought to the table. The secret to keeping this gathering safe? Individuality! Everyone gets their own servings, and they’re all served contactless. The night before your guests arrive, ensure you’re stocked up on skewers,

glassware, and plates. Appetizers like individual shrimp cocktails in a jar, skewers of veggies, and little baggies of popcorn are all options of snacks to serve your guests, that prevent sharing and cross-contamination. If you have little ones around, you can include them in the fun by investing in disposable cups and markers. Kids can write individual names or fun designs distinguishing each cup for the guests. Even sans kiddos, decorating and labelling plates and cups is a fun way to satisfy your inner child.

The important thing to keep in mind is ensuring your guests all live in the same household. You don’t want to be gathering multiple households quite yet - hopefully by next summer! Having one other household in your bubble can be safe, so long as social distancing is maintained. When your guest list is sorted, simply set up two tables. If available, place a smaller table between the two to allow for more space. Then, get creative in the kitchen! If wanting to serve dishes on a platter, make one per household. Desserts can be served in fun individual portions - cupcakes, fruit skewers, or even a mini chocolate mousse will safely satisfy your tastebuds.

Begging For S’more No cottage trip is complete without a campfire. Ditch the big communal bag of marshmallows for smaller, individually portioned s’mores kits! S’mores kits can be crafted affordably, and are seriously adorable treats for you, your family, and your guests. Include chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows. Label or decorate the box for each guest, and tie to a roasting stick. You can make similar boxes filled with other goodies like popcorn, veggies, and chips, so your guests have a variety of options to choose from. Your guests will be begging for s’more!

Kareina spent summers of her childhood at cottages in the Mactier and Nobel Area. She lived in Alberta for a couple years and loved the mountain views but really missed the lakes and maple trees and could not wait to get back to the peace that is Muskoka. She has been an educator for several years and has worked in customer service. Kareina is excited to be a part of the Cayman Marshall team.

Steve is a strong relationship builder, honest and dedicated to Customer Service. This combined with his intimate knowledge of Muskoka lakes and area has made him a consistent top producer.
