A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

It’s no wonder that Muskoka and summer have always been intertwined in people’s minds, for this region has been a summer playground for cottagers from all over the world for well over a century. There’s so much to do in summer: swimming and boating on pristine lakes; fishing, hiking and appreciating unspoiled nature; heading into town to catch great music or theatre. It’s no wonder that Muskoka is unequalled as one of the top cottaging areas in North America.

We’re currently enjoying one of the busiest real estate seasons in many years, even in the face of an uncertain economy and an ongoing health crisis. When you think about it, that makes sense too, for in uncertain times, we tend to focus in on what really matters – spending time with family, enjoying life, finding a place where we can truly relax. Friends and clients often tell me that as soon as they arrive at the cottage, they finally feel they can breathe again. That’s Muskoka – and never more than in summertime.

As spring comes to an end, summer welcomes us with open arms, encouraging us to take every advantage the season has to offer.

Chris-Craft took these global events and turned them into opportunities, I encourage you to do the same.

In our June digital issue, we are reminded of the rich history of ChrisCraft boats, and how this company overcame trying times, including two world wars and the Great Depression. They upgraded designs, altered production methods, and advertised and expanded in unusual times, all measures that have brought them the success they have today. Just as

I want us to take this time to embrace this situation we are all in, and find ways to better the world around us – and this can start at the cottage. Take this time to fix those dock stairs that are rotting, redesign your bunkie, pave that driveway for added space to play basketball and draw with sidewalk chalk. Whatever it is, never stop dreaming, never stop growing, never stop loving.

Leonardo had his Mona Lisa and Virgin of the Rocks. Dr. John Weinstein speaks with the same pride and delight about the almost impossible installations on cliffs and scrabbly hillsides. Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. Long, frequent stair climbs will inevitably become an obstacle to all of us. Those long stair climbs are also an obstacle to real estate sales. John’s lifts have been the clincher in many deals. He has been called to scale cliffs and quote on a lift before clients even consider a purchase.

hile most of his installations cluster in the Muskoka region, they range from Sudbury, Goderich and Fort Erie in Ontario to the Gatineau and Lake Memphremagog in Quebec. He guards customer privacy and has the quiet satisfaction of knowing that he has changed lake experiences for countless satisfied customers – from clients living with disability who need a functional lift, to more elaborate, multi-stationed lifts for larger lake houses. Happy-client testimonials on the company website convey how liberating it can be to have a device, costing $100,000 on average, that transports family, guests, food and drink from cottage to dockside. “With the lift, all the disadvantages of living high off the water become the advantages of living high off the water.” “With the lift, the dock’s another room at the cottage.” “Before the lift went in we’d see them two or three weekends a year. Now the cottage is never empty.” With a lift, you can “buy high.” Steep properties have desirable aspects that shoreline properties may not share: panoramic views, greater privacy, less noise, fresh breezes that keep the bugs away, and, often, lower purchase prices because of the difficult access. A marginal property can become not merely viable, but exceptional, once it has convenient waterfront access. Weinstein and I drive to Lift 62, adjoining a cottage perched dramatically above Lake Muskoka, with 180 feet of track inclined at 23 degrees. The motor house, embellished with a whimsical “Grand Trunk Railway” sign, resembles a quaint brick shed.

Opening the door, Weinstein points out the twohorsepower three phase brake-motor, industrial duty reducer, the 10” diameter winch drum, and the 3/8” compacted aircraft cable that lifts the car. “We don’t buy offshore cable; it doesn’t age well. Compacted cable is run through a machine to remove all the imperfections so that the strands nest perfectly with each other. The 3/8th-inch cable has a breaking strength of over 10 tons and the 10” drum, which requires a larger size reducer than the industry standard 6” drum, is better for enhancing cable life.” The car is fitted out with a two-person bench seat at each end that can be pivoted up to keep them dry or pack more luggage. As he pushes the button to descend, I instinctively hunch my shoulders and brace myself for a sudden, bonerattling jolt. My intuition is wrong; there is no jolt. The start, and subsequent acceleration to a stately 0.8 miles per hour, is smooth and serene enough not to disturb the glass of Chardonnay I had left on the car railing. “We only use three-phase motors,” Weinstein says, explaining that they’re more expensive to use than a standard singlespeed single-phase motor, but worth the extra expense because they ensure jerk-free starts and stops. I enjoy the Chardonnay while silently singing Funiculi, Funicula, the famous Neapolitan pop song composed in 1880 by Luigi Denza to advertise the launch of the Mount Vesuvius funicular cable car that brought tourists up Mount Vesuvius. (A funicular uses twinned cable cars that act as mutual counterweights. They run on parallel tracks, one ascending as the other descends.)

D

espite its unobtrusive presence, the steel track is a rigid, shake-free structure, thanks to the X-, Y-, and Z-bracing creating rigid triangles in all three spatial dimensions. The legs splay inward slightly, 1/8” per vertical foot, for added stability. The track support structures have a footprint of only 1 to 7 square feet for each 20-foot section of track. The leg design eliminates torque forces on the base of the legs and allows for light footings without the need to dig and pour concrete footings. Their footprint is much less than flights of stairs separated by landing platforms. The track also lets lots of light through, so vegetation can grow under the track. This is particularly important on sandy hillsides where the vegetation is critical to the stability of the slope.

Even when high off the ground, exposed and traversing a hillside, following a rock face, or peeking through the foliage, an Inclined Elevation lift can be hard to spot from a boat or seaplane. Wooden stairs also typically rot after 15 years. If maintained properly, an Inclined Elevation lift should last a century. Weinstein and his team stay fit as they serve as their own construction and maintenance crew, clambering up the rocky outcrops of the Canadian Shield while dangling from safety harnesses. Weinstein was born in Sydney, Australia, moved soon after to Fiji, then to Canada. Growing up in Ottawa, he attended Ridley College, St. Catharines, where he rowed on their Heavy Eight Crew that won the American Schoolboy, the Canadian Schoolboy, and the Princess Elizabeth Cup at England’s famed Henley Royal Regatta.

After high school, he earned degrees in physics at Carlton University and the University of Toronto, writing his dissertation on the arcana of the S* and delta resonances, which he discovered were not mesons but rather bound states of two mesons analogous to the deuteron and live about 10 times longer than it takes light to cross the proton. After six years as assistant visiting professor at the University of Mississippi, he recalls, “I made it to one rung below tenure track but I was tired of spending years studying these esoteric short-lived systems and was not interested in playing academic politics.” He moved back to Ontario and eventually stepped into the lift business. After our tour of Lift 62, Weinstein leaves to make a sales call, leaving me in the capable hands of his build-team welder. We drive 10 minutes to Gravenhurst so that I can ride on Lift 47 to learn about a JUNE 2020 17 ■

I confess to an initial moment of panic upon entering the car, which boasts a vertigo-inducing view that would make a rollercoaster fanatic envious. Again, during the ride, there’s no jolt when one expects it, during the change of pitch. The car’s wheeled dolly hugs the track’s sudden curve. However, the

Lift 47 is the firm’s steepest lift to date, but as it turns out, I ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Back in the shop, which is an industrial loft measuring 30 feet high, 30 feet wide and 100 feet long, I see a track assembly welded together during the winter with an 67-degree pitch. Now installed, Lift 81 has turned a 15-minute ATV and boat ride to the dock to a 60-second smooth ride down a rock face.

This physicist has transformed his gift for problem solving into beautiful, life-altering elevators that help people enjoy their cottages indefinitely. inclinedelevation.com

A History

of Speed and Elegance Chris-Craft Boats

It’s a story that’s familiar to every fan of historic Muskoka boats, a tale of a 19th-century boatbuilder who went on to lead an industry. In his teens he began crafting skiffs to explore his local waterways. As the power boat age dawned, he began building faster and faster vessels. His talents eventually brought commissions building luxurious yachts for the world’s wealthiest customers. The story could be told about Ditchburn or Minett, but this version has a couple of twists. For one, the local waterway that inspired the boatbuilder wasn’t Lake Muskoka or Rosseau, but the deltas of the St. Clair River in Michigan. And, unlike the Muskoka boat shops, Chris-Craft Boats is still thriving. Greavette and Minett-Shields, Ditchburn and Duke have all folded, killed off by the Depression, or an inability to adapt to changing tastes, or the advent of fibreglass. But Chris-Craft, after a tumultuous 140-some years, is still delivering luxurious boats to customers around the world, including quite a few in Muskoka.

return by building boats for his friends and for the visiting duck hunters. (He also earned renown as a decoy carver – decoys with his CC insignia on them are still highly coveted by collectors.) When Chris was twenty, he went into boatbuilding full time. It would be nearly 40 years before his company became Chris-Craft, but for the rest of his life he would be known as a superb boatbuilder, someone who knew and understood how to make boats go fast, and also loved to add luxurious touches. The speed was the element that drove much of his early success. The luxury came later. It’s difficult for modern boaters to understand just how popular boat racing was in the early 20th century. Races on the Detroit River or the Toronto waterfront drew massive crowds – tens or even hundreds of thousands of spectators who came to watch death-defying drivers like Gar Wood pilot their boats at breathtaking speeds.

The firm got its start in 1873, when the improbably named Christopher Columbus Smith built his first skiff. Like his older brother Henry, 13-year-old Chris grew up surrounded by water. His home town of Algonac is located on one of the world’s largest freshwater deltas; the town’s many canals have led some overenthusiastic boosters to call it “The Venice of Michigan.” The Smith brothers and their friends used the river for playing and to earn money, hunting ducks for market, and guiding visiting hunters. But Chris soon found he could get a better and more enjoyable

JUNE 2020 23 ■

Part of the thrill came from the rapid advances in technology. Chris started by putting car engines into rowboats, pushing them along at speeds of seven or eight miles an hour. As the motors got better, he and a handful of other builders began to experiment with a new type of hull. Displacement hulls – in which the boat was pushed through the water – soon gave way to hydroplanes, in which the boat rode on top of the water, the way modern boats come up on a plane. Steps in the hull helped break the boat free of the water even more, and boats reached previously unimaginable speeds. In 1910, Chris built a boat that went over 30 mph; just three years later, one of his boats ran well over 50 mph. It wasn’t long before airplane motors began providing even more horsepower, particularly after the First World War, when surplus motors were abundant. Speed records were shattered year after year. Aside from the thrill of the speed, boat builders saw two great benefits in racing: it was a place to test new technology, and it was a way to market their brand. For the same reason that Ferrari and Porsche build Formula One cars today, Chris Smith built boats for Gar Wood a century ago. The most famous racer of his day, Wood helped raise Chris Smith’s name to prominence, while Chris and his sons Jay and Bernard, helped Wood win races. Those prestigious race wins drew clients to Chris and his sons, who were happy to supply luxurious – and fast – boats to an elite clientele. In Algonac, as in Muskoka, most high-end boats were custom orders. Builders like the Smiths might publish a catalogue of models, but their customers knew that they could customize the boat in any way they wished, even altering the hull design by requesting something longer or shorter or wider. But by 1921, Jay and Bernard had other ideas. Building custom boats was rewarding work – the company would continue doing it for years, crafting for customers like Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. But the younger generation suspected that the real money was to be found in production work. They had seen how Henry Ford and others had used assembly lines to speed production of cars, and they knew the same approach would work with boats. The partnership with Gar Wood was amicably dissolved, and Chris-Craft Boats was finally born. Other boat builders were doing the same thing, or would follow

24 JUNE 2020 ■

suit. In Muskoka, for example, Greavette Boats was launched when Tom Greavette decided to leave his employer, Herb Ditchburn, and set up a modern, production-line boat factory just across the road. But timing is everything. Where Greavette had the misfortune to launch just before the Depression hit, a move that nearly killed the new company as quickly as it had begun, Chris-Craft sprang into existence at a boom time. Pleasure boating was becoming accessible to the middle classes, and production steadily increased through the 1920s. The company’s designers and builders drew on Chris-Craft’s heritage of fast boats and luxurious custom builds to create the best of both: boats that would cut through the water at speed, while featuring luxurious touches and superb craftsmanship. The Depression hit all boat builders hard, but Chris-Craft weathered it better than most. There were layoffs and work slowed, but even by 1936 the company was starting to buy new property and build an expanded plant as sales started to pick up. By the end of the decade, Chris-Craft was offering a bewildering range of boats – building 100 different models, from skiffs and 15-foot runabouts to 55-foot cruisers – and building up to 1,000 boats a year.

“When the war ended and soldiers came pouring back home, the company entered the biggest boom period it had ever seen.” When the U.S. entered the Second World War, production rapidly switched to military vessels. Chris-Craft built landing crafts – over 10,000 by the end of the war – as well as patrol boats, rescue boats, and even target vessels for training navy gunners. Profits during the war years were limited by legislation, but military contracts gave the company a chance to explore new techniques and materials. Plywood and industrial sealants were used for the first time, approaches that presaged the move to plywood boats and later fibreglass. Chris-Craft also kept up its marketing budget, with slogans like “Buy war bonds today, command your own vessel tomorrow.” Promoting war bonds was good for the country; after the war, it would turn out to be good for Chris-Craft. When the war ended and soldiers came pouring back home, the company entered the biggest boom period it had ever seen. Owning a boat became part of the American dream, and Chris-Craft was a top choice for many of those returning servicemen. The company had also got a jump on many of its competitors, preparing for peacetime production even before Japan surrendered and the war ended.

The Smith family sold the company in 1960, and the firm changed hands several times over the next few decades. (At one time there were actually two separate companies – Chris-Craft Industries owned TV stations and chemical plants, but sold the boat-making division and leased the name to another company. The two parts were reunited in 2000.) The company built its last wooden boat in 1972, but the material remained an essential part of the boats. To this day, mahogany, teak and other woods are still used extensively in decks and swim platforms, as well as on dashboards and other decorative locations. Modern Chris-Craft boats retain more than just a history of wood detailing. The number of models has diminished considerably. Pride Marine Group is Ontario’s exclusive Chris-Craft dealer. Carrying a variety of new and pre-owned Chris-Craft inventory.

BETTER LIVING, BY MARTHA UNIACKE BREEN

AUTOMATICALLY CHUCK McNAIR ELECTRIC BRINGS TECH TO THE COTTAGE

28 JUNE 2020 â–

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “home automation,” you might conjure up a daunting, futuristic image – perhaps a pair of disembodied, Rube Goldberg-esque arms preparing and delivering up dinner on a conveyor belt, or the Jetsons’ robot maid, Rosie. But the reality is actually both more familiar, and more impressive. If you have an electronic home security system, or even just a programmable thermostat, you’re already using a form of home automation. And according to brothers Steve and Mitch McNair, principals of the Bracebridgearea firm Chuck McNair Electric, it’s particularly well suited to cottage life – not just new builds, but existing houses as well, regardless of age.

A fully kitted-out home automation system can allow you to precisely control lighting inside and out, along with home comfort, security, heat recovery systems, window shades and ceiling fans, water service, even audio-visual and Internet functions, all from beautifully designed wall switches or a customized app.

You can program the system to power down part of the house – perhaps a guest wing, if it’s just the two of you up for the weekend. You can control alarm and security functions remotely from your home in the city. And you can maintain complete control and be immediately aware of emergencies, 24 hours a day. “Think about when you first arrive at the cottage from the city; you go around turning on lights, turning on the water, heating or AC, and it takes a while before it’s completely comfortable,” observes Steve. “With automation you can get it all powered up from the road just by pressing a button, and by the time you walk in it’s all set up.” That’s more precious time to relax and enjoy your weekend. If all this sounds complicated – and expensive – that’s another myth the McNair brothers want to explode. As Mitch explains, “Often when we first sit down with a client, the aim is to find out exactly what their objective is – whether they want it very automated, or just more efficient, and what their budget is. Usually once you understand what the benefits are, you can see better what will work with your ideas.”

Each home has its own individual automation “personality,” says Steve, which the partners fine-tune with a combination of lighting design, CAD and custom programming, and set up to operate through a phone app that is unique to your house. Some of the tech relies on conventional wiring, but many of the functions actually operate wirelessly, which means it rarely requires extensive retrofitting or complex installation procedures. That makes it quite feasible even for older cottages; in many cases, you don’t even need to open the walls.

Mitch recalls a recent new-build project where the owner requested that they design the lighting so precisely that the light levels could be set for the old-timey ambience she remembered from her childhood. “When a house is being wired for home automation, it’s actually very easy to customize it for what you want to do,” he says. “With a new build, of course, it’s great the earlier we’re brought in, but even if we come in at the final stages, we can still install a full system. But even older cottages can be

retrofitted – it’s not even particularly difficult, compared to upgrading conventional wiring.” The two-person team of Steve and Mitch, aided by company founder and father Chuck McNair and a qualified team of about 15 installers and other support professionals, are uniquely suited to their specialty. As kids, both started working summers for the company, which the elder McNair founded in 1987 as a general electrical service. Each of the sons earned their electrical

JUNE 2020 31 ■

apprenticeships at George Brown College in Toronto, ultimately earning their 309A electrical licenses (Steve later went on to earn his master’s license), and joined the family firm as licenced electricians after graduation. “Our dad did some home automation installs just when the technology first became available,” recalls Steve, adding with a laugh, “Kind of the equivalent of the first cellphone brick!” But just as the younger McNairs began working fulltime with their dad, the technology advanced to the point where it could be programmed into cellphones, and began to take off. When an architect hired them for a complete home automation job about seven years ago, the junior McNairs were intrigued and accepted the job immediately, figuring they’d learn the ropes later. But Mitch had developed an affinity for computer programming, and Steve had discovered a keen eye for design. Something chimed, and from that point on the company has focused on this unique and rapidly advancing specialty.

32 JUNE 2020 ■

Lighting is the most popular application of home automation, and a great place to start if you’re considering installing the technology. “One way to look at it is that you might hire a lighting designer to tailor the lighting to your needs and layout, so this takes it to the next level and makes the actual operation of the lights easier and more efficient,” explains Mitch. You might want to gang a group of lights to activate with a single switch, or set levels to change automatically over the course of the day; you can set it up so that you can operate individual lights or shut them all off with a touch. You can program it to work with voice recognition or motion sensors; or if you like, set it up with the cottage’s GPS coordinates so that landscape lighting activates precisely when the sun goes down. And you can control all this either through the app or discreetly labelled wall switches. (There’s even a little extra nicety for detail lovers: you can choose any font you like for the lettering.)

But the system, of course, can automate much more than lighting, which is where its true innovation shines. Along with standard household functions such as HVAC and security, it can be programmed to monitor vital components such as ambient temperature – warning you, for example, if the temperature drops below a certain level, which might indicate a furnace failure or damage while you are away. You can disarm the security system remotely to let in a local contractor to do work on the cottage, or give them their own temporary entry code. And when you leave on Sunday night, it can put the whole house to sleep at a touch of a button. “The system is so customizable that we can program it to control all or just some of your home’s functions,” says Steve. “You can have an array that just labels your switches so you can see what’s on and off, add another layer for security or home comfort, or you can make every function separate or tie it all in together. That’s the beauty of it; it can be tailored exactly to your needs.”

Keep your power on even when the power’s out.

Chef René’s

Spiced Rhubarb Compote This simple and versatile recipe is a great new take on a treasured springtime ingredient, perfectly timed as leafy rhubarb plants are ready to harvest in backyards across Muskoka. Many flavours come together in this compote–the fresh tartness of rhubarb, natural sweetness from local honey and an unexpected hit of cinnamon.

INGREDIENTS Rhubarb and strawberries: Both are easy to come by this time of year. Whether they’re from your own garden or a farmer’s market, the best bet is always to get them fresh, but you can also enjoy this recipe in every season by using frozen rhubarb and strawberries. Honey: One of my favourite items to buy locally is honey. There are so many nuances to honey; some are sweeter, some are even a bit sour, depending on the flowers the bees have access to. In Muskoka, we have many quality producers who you can find at farmer’s markets or shops. Ask them about their different products and, if you can, try a few different varieties. For this recipe, you’ll want to limit excess flavours, so consider opting for a wildflower honey over a dark buckwheat. Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds a fragrant twist to this compote, but you don’t want it to be overpowering. Use cinnamon sticks instead of powder to bring a more delicate, subtle flavour, which combines magically with the rhubarb and honey. The cinnamon element allows this compote to pair beautifully with a variety of flavours and dishes, both savoury and sweet.

RECIPE Wine Pairing: Les Oliviers Grenache Cinsault Rosé

Chop 3 cups of rhubarb into small pieces and add to a pot with ½ cup of water and 2 tablespoons of honey. Simmer and reduce on medium heat for 35 minutes until the rhubarb has broken down. Add a generous 3 inches of cinnamon stick and 1 cup of chopped strawberries. Cook for no more than 10 minutes, after which much of the liquid will have boiled off. Cover and let rest for half an hour.

MEAL IDEAS Try this spiced rhubarb compote on seared Georgian Bay pickerel, any poultry dish like wild quail or chicken or on top of fresh gelato. It even works as a base for a smoothie or frozen daiquiri.

OWN YOUR OWN PIECE OF

MUSKOKA HISTORY The first thing that greets you when your boat lands at the dock at Sly Fox Golf Club, at the southern entrance to the narrows separating the two bodies of Wahwashkesh Lake, is a plaque mounted on MacRae Rock, a sizable chunk of glacier-polished granite located on the shoreline. The plaque tells the story of two boys who lived, played and worked there more than 80 years ago. Their young lives ended tragically in August 1944, at the height of the fighting during World War II, when the two brothers died in action just one day apart.

CAYMAN MARSHALL – INTERNATIONAL LUXURY & LIFESTYLE SEARCHMUSKOKAREALESTATE.COM

SLY FOX GOLF CLUB

The younger brother, George Dougald MacRae, had joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, graduating as a pilot with the rank of flying officer. His older brother, Jamie Duncan MacRae, was a lance corporal in the Hamilton-based Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders infantry regiment. The Argyles landed in Normandy just in time to join an

Allied pincer movement, the “Falaise Gap” operation, mounted in mid-August 1944, which was designed to entrap a retreating German army. But in the heat of battle, Jamie MacRae was killed by enemy artillery fire – less than 24 hours after his brother went down in flames over Warsaw, a thousand miles away. Their home, the main lodge of the sportsmen’s resort, has stayed remarkably unchanged since the late 1930s and early 1940s, when as teenagers the two MacRae brothers guided the resort’s clientele to the best hunting in the nearby woods, and fishing in Wahwashkesh Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the Parry Sound district. While the resort still caters to hunting and fishing, the current owner, Herb Schmidt, has built a unique nine-hole executive golf course called the Sly Fox Golf Club. Sly Fox is the third golf course Schmidt has designed and built, and took more than six years to complete. It features two

miles of underground irrigation, capable of pumping 100 gallons per minute to service the sprinkler systems. The property, first developed in 1903, now consists of the 4,000-sq.ft. main lodge with a large wraparound porch, nine individual cottages, eight finger docks, and roughly 2,400 feet of water frontage, encompassing nearly 40 acres on a peninsula, surrounded by Crown land and water. As the plaque says, “This memorial is located at the site of the MacRae Family Hunting and Fishing Lodge, known as ‘The Linger Long Lodge.’” The brothers made the ultimate sacrifice for peace and freedom. And today, we honour their memory. The plaque concludes: “This memorial is placed here by those for whom this lake is a very special place and who enjoy Lake Wahwashkesh Lake ‘in peace and freedom.’”

106 JUNE 2020 â–

Does the sun rise and set around your dream cottage? And do you even want it to? Rethinking your wish list Picture this: you’ve settled down to dinner in your new cottage, ready to soak in the sublime lake views. As you slice into your perfectly cooked beef tenderloin, the setting sun blinds you – you reach for your Ray-Bans and drop the window blinds, completely covering up those amazing views. Wait, isn’t that what you paid all that money for?

JUNE 2020 107 ■

You may imagine your dream retreat optimally positioned for the rising and setting sun, but a southwest-facing cottage can have a dark side. Full-on sun can spoil dinner as well as speed up wear and tear to the cottage itself – if, in fact, you do end up with extended sun. Nevertheless, it’s a point that many purchasers get easily hung up on, and it boggles Todd Adair’s mind. The president of Cayman Marshall International Realty, who grew up in Muskoka, says it’s an absolute fallacy that the best cottages face southwest. “People have this preconceived notion that they need to have southwest exposure, but yet they don’t really know why,” says Adair. “It really narrows down your purchasing options – you can totally miss out on the perfect cottage.” Time and again, he meets first-time cottage buyers whose friends tell them they have to look for that sought-after southwest exposure. “Our team always asks, ‘Why do you have to be facing southwest?’” They typically respond that they want more sunshine-y hours during the day, and spectacular sunsets at night. While the docks at southwest-facing cottages generally do net the most sun, Adair says, once you factor in trees, hilly or rocky areas and elevation, those flashy rays may be eclipsed. Another caution: sun damage isn’t limited to human bodies – it affects buildings, too. Sun-splashed cottages are more costly to maintain, as the siding, shingles, seals and seams on all the doors and windows age twice as fast when pounded with all-day sun, says Adair.

The boathouse and dock get a savage beating too from waves, wind, changing water levels and ice chunks. “I prefer a calm, sunny day with no wind on a property facing northeast any day,” Adair says. But isn’t it all worth it for those gorgeously fiery #sunsetpic posts on Instagram? “The likelihood of getting one if you’re facing southwest is pretty slim,” says Adair. “People are shocked to find out that summer sunsets are actually in the northern hemisphere, not the southern hemisphere. They almost don’t believe us.”

SUN AT BOATHOUSE July Schedule Boathouse July Sunrise July Sunset

But it’s easy to verify: the summer solstice is on June 21st – the longest day of the year – when the sun sets due northwest. In reverse, the shortest day of the year is December 21st, when the sun sets in the southwest. That means the sunrise/sunset game at northeast-facing properties is pretty strong. Adair loves touring clients through such properties to prove it.

Need that #sunset pic for the ’gram? “The likelihood of getting one if you’re facing southwest is pretty slim. People are shocked to find out that summer sunsets are actually in the northern hemisphere, not the southern hemisphere.” #CaymanMarshallTip Moral of the story? Expand your mind (and horizons). Check out places and exposures you typically wouldn’t. You might surprise yourself and get a deal in the process. Even if you’re not a seasoned buyer, think like one. “Don’t get hung up on the specs of a property,” says Adair. “Get out there and experience how each property behaves and feels.” You might even end up enjoying that beef tenderloin, minus the Ray-Bans and window blinds. Oh, and don’t forget that perfect glass of your favourite red. Now that’s an Instagram-worthy pic! #nailedit.

CAYMAN MARSHALL ADVANTAGE “Become so skilled, so vigilant, so flat-out fantastic at what you do that your talent cannot be dismissed.” – Oprah Winfrey When we opened the doors of Cayman Marshall International Realty Inc. as a small boutique brokerage firm to serve the Muskoka real estate market in 2012, we did so with the intention of redefining the level of service that clients could expect from our real estate professionals. Since then, we have grown into an impressive team of top-producing realtors and brokers committed to ensuring our clients receive the highest level of service when buying or selling property in one of Canada’s most sought-after luxury destinations. We at Cayman Marshall have been entrusted with the most prestigious waterfront properties in Muskoka. As leaders in luxury and waterfront real estate, we have had record sales on many of Muskoka’s finest lakes with sales now surpassing the billion-dollar mark we’ve secured our position as a leader in luxury real estate. We have offices in Port Carling, Huntsville/Lake Of Bays and Toronto. Our in-house IT professionals have developed proprietary online tools and software, interactive and intuitive websites, lifestyle tours, stunning photography and an astonishing network of over 400 local and international referral partners to ensure our clients’ listings get the exposure they need to attract the most discerning local and international buyers.

We now print four issues per year, with an annual distribution of 200,000. Each magazine is delivered to the front door of homes and cottages of highnet-worth clientele throughout Ontario.

Founded on the principles of teamwork, service and value, Cayman Marshall is the best advantage for buyers and sellers alike in Ontario. If you’re looking for a real estate solution that’s undeniably different, please reach out to myself or one of my teammates and start experiencing the advantage!

We are proud to mention that the Cayman Marshall Port Carling brokerage was just voted (by a large panel of international judges) to be the “Best Real Estate Agency in Canada”, two years in a row – a title that we cherish!
