A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS If you ask me, October in Muskoka is underrated. Summer’s pleasures may be ending – the lake’s getting a little too cold even for a quick dip, and my wife always brings an extra blanket when we go out in the boat. But there are still plenty of fun things to do.

are five that we like, including my personal favourite, Two Sisters.

It’s a time of hayrides and harvest festivals; of farmer’s markets brimming with justpicked vegetables; of hiking through woods ablaze with colour – and of socializing with friends and family by a big bonfire at the close of a glorious fall day.

In this issue, we invite you to get out and enjoy this time of year. Some of the world’s best wineries are right here in Ontario, and many of them are open to the public for guided tours, talks with expert sommeliers, fine dining and of course, tastings. Here

Meanwhile, there’s plenty of good weather and fun still to enjoy before the first snowflakes bring us back inside to cozy up by the fireplace. Enjoy!

Fall is really my favourite season in Muskoka. As the streets in town become less crowded, the whole area seems to take on a more laidback, relaxed air. I especially love walking in the woods; the soft chill in the air seems to sharpen the senses. With the leaves off the trees, you can see through the clear branches for miles and miles. The cries of birds seem more distinct – especially crows, blue jays and cardinals. And there’s nothing quite like the clean, earthy smell of the forest after a light autumn rain.

The cooler weather hasn’t cooled the real estate market – it continues to be very active. One of the biggest drivers continues to be a shortage of supply. It will be very interesting to see of the lifting of travel restrictions brings back overseas buyers in a big way; I suspect it will, adding to the pressure. If you are thinking of either buying or selling, don’t take risks with your representation. Call for a consult with a member of our team; Cayman Marshall specializes in Muskoka, and we have the expertise you need in these unusual times.

In this issue, we profile a community initiative for Camp Ooch, Camp Ooch was founded to give kids living with cancer an opportunity to experience the joy of a traditional Muskoka camp vacation. Recently, a number of Muskoka businesses came together to support a large renovation

of the camp – helping to make that experience available to a wider number of campers than ever before. And as you may know, we like to do things our own way up here in Muskoka. And that’s particularly true in the way we design. Cassis Design Studio senior designer, Meredith Parsons gives us a lesson on the three main categories of home design, then offers tips on how to adapt these styles for a uniquely Muskoka-centric look. From traditional to ultra-modern, here’s how to make your cottage interior your own! Enjoy autumn in Muskoka, and we hope you’ll have a chance to get outside for a few more walks in the fresh air before winter returns – and a whole new way to experience this beautiful part of the country begins!

Labour of Love CAMP OOCH BUILDS ON GREATNESS BY LESLIE C. SMITH

I It started out as a good idea. It has grown into a great one.

n 1983, a small group of Muskoka-loving volunteers formed Camp Ooch, a nocharge, home-away-fromhospital camp for children with cancer. Decades later, their concept has grown to comprise not just the camp itself and nearby family accommodations, but a special recreation centre

in Toronto plus an activitiesbased programme attached to paediatric oncology centres across Ontario. Ooch’s wilderness location has changed over the years, too. Thanks to generous donor support, it now has a permanent, private base on the shores of Donner Lake, close to Rosseau. OCTOBER 2021 9 ■

O

och Muskoka is the only overnight camp in Canada with IV chemotherapy and blood transfusion capability, meaning that even campers with complex care needs can enjoy a traditional camp experience. Kids just being kids is the whole rationale: everyone is encouraged to concentrate on fun. Camp programs “celebrate kids for who they are, not what they have.” No one points you out or whispers behind your back. “[It] was probably the first place where I didn’t feel so different anymore,” says one camper. Recently, the privately funded volunteer organization has pressed itself even further, seeking not only to comply with the new Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act 10 OCTOBER 2021 ■

but also to accommodate 50% more campers. Project developer and manager Miles Cope, working with lead architect Rob Knight from Barrie’s Ted Handy and Associates, oversaw the camp’s remodelling from beginning till end, ensuring the feasibility of ideas and creating a super-enthusiastic team fuelled by his own passion. Improvements included everything from new sewage and water processing systems to rebuilds of camper housing and the central lodge, to a new medical facility and flex housing for families and other visitors. The work was hard – literally, in the case of laying pipe infrastructure through thick granite 1.2 metres below the frost line – and it took a long time, given that Camp Ooch was still operating during summer months. However, one blessing was that Covid, when it came along, didn’t interfere too much with the final phase of the process, which was a complete reno of all outdoor amenities.

Everyone is encouraged to concentrate on fun

“The goal was not necessarily to beautify,” Miles Cope says, “but to make the camp more accessible, while bringing back the Muskoka feel to the landscape.” Quickto-rot wooden borders were replaced by sturdy native granite. Stone pavers and asphalt for steeper inclines replaced the wood chips and loose gravel that sometimes made walking and wheelchair pushing difficult. Wherever possible, Cope’s team dealt with Muskoka’s uneven terrain and varying elevations by smoothing and extending some slopes and zigzagging others. This switchback technique proved most effective for the

jewel in Camp Ooch’s remodelled grounds: A completely new Campitheatre, providing stage access to wheelchair users, night sky-friendly lighting, two circular firepits, and, best of all, stepped seating built entirely from precision-cut Muskoka granite. The latter is a product of Muskoka Rock Company, headquartered in Gravenhurst and Huntsville. President Seth Rudin says working with so many dedicated people was amazing. “For us, this was a special project to be part of – the creativity, the collaboration, the teamwork… Above all, we thought of the kids who’d be benefitting.” OCTOBER 2021 11 ■

T

he Campitheatre seating uses a unique flagstone application that gives the benches a natural look while being comfortable on a multitude of bottoms. The task of putting it all together fell to Kirby Hall, owner of Parry Sound’s Hall Construction. His input proved invaluable in face of the challenge of dry-laying – that is, setting without mortar – heavy granite blocks into a barrier-free, semi-circular shape. “It was just like building the pyramids,” says Hall. “Everything had to be precisely fitted.” This engineering feat, so tough to achieve and yet so easy on the eyes, had the stated goal of lasting for a hundred years or more. “It won’t disintegrate and it will never need repair. We kept thinking of the enjoyment it would give these kids for years to come.”

Miles Cope says he’s proud of bringing off the entire project on time, despite tight deadlines, Covid, and having to do most of the building during winter. He talks of the enduring joy and laughter at Camp Ooch and of the “culture of contagious enthusiasm” engendered by CEO Alex Robertson. Looking forward, he can see even greater things to come. A Muskoka Classic,

BY MARTHA UNIACKE BREEN

N

estled into a granite slope high above the water, this sprawling cottage, with architecture by Richard Wengle and interior design by John David Edison, gives little hint on first glance of just how big it really is. Yet every detail has been carefully considered to make the big, beautiful view of Lake Joseph – and the utmost in comfort while enjoying that view – the main object. The topography of the site, in keeping with a lot of prime Muskoka waterfront property, features a steep slope that rambles down to some 470 feet of frontage. To make the best use

of the big six-plus-acre property’s breathtaking views, Wengle’s guiding principle was to spread the building out over a series of “pods” or pavilions, joined by bridges and stairways. “The building really reacts to the site,” Wengle says. “The view itself really helped us establish the parameters of the cottage.” When you first alight by the garage – a considerable structure in its own right, with three bays, two storeys and room for a gym, sports court and roomy guest quarters – a stone path leads through the woods to a relatively modest entry “pod.” In what will prove

To make the best use of the big six-plus-acre property’s breathtaking views, Wengle’s guiding principle was to spread the building out over a series of “pods” or pavilions, joined by bridges and stairways. to be a repeating motif in both the exterior cladding and Edison’s subtle but engaging interiors, the entry pavilion is clad in grey cut-stone boards and black metal trim, providing a contemporary complement to the rugged Muskoka landscape. It also provides a clean backdrop to the landscape through huge, floor-toceiling curtain walls throughout. From here, the cottage swells to stairs that lead down to the full two-storey expanse that is the main “pod” of the building, with great room at one side, kitchen and dining areas and beyond, through subtly slatted doors, the Muskoka room at the cottage’s far end. A huge swath of windows stretches from one end of the room to the other, yet each area gains unexpected warmth – even a surprising coziness, for such a large space – from natural, softly toned materials and details. For example, a swooping ceiling treatment of downward-curving panels evokes billowing sails, while the Jean-Paul Gaultier-designed modular sofa in the sunken living area invites cuddling up en famille to watch TV or just gaze out at the water. The Muskoka room itself deserves special mention, for its gleeful

reinvention of this Muskoka cottage mainstay: windows on two sides fold back completely to let in the breeze, while barnboard wall cladding gives it a certain rusticity. From that point on it’s pure modern luxury, with a big wood-burning fireplace and strikingly patterned granite floor tiles. A stairway discreetly panelled in

translucent onyx next to the living area leads to the third and most private “pod,” the principal bedroom wing. A double-sided fireplace warms both bedroom and ensuite, while exquisite details add more coziness: wall cladding of four-inch-by-eight-foot stone tiles that resemble barnboard in the ensuite, and a built-in slatted canopy over the bed.

For designer Edison, what makes the space special is the care taken in its construction, and the combination of contemporary finishes and references to classic Muskoka style. At water’s edge, the boathouse is designed as much for entertaining as for housing boats. “Boathouses these days are no longer just utilitarian spaces,” says Taylor Moore, president of Sherwood North, which built the cottage. “In the old days in Muskoka, they were purely work/ storage and utility spaces, but now they double as entertainment and leisure space.” Along with another comfortable guest space, it’s equipped with bar, bath, sound and entertainment systems, and a unique platform-lift boat storage facility: boats are lowered into the water at the push of a button, allowing for the full boat deck level to be used as an entertainment or play space. For designer Edison, what makes the space special is the care taken in its construction, and the combination of contemporary finishes and references to classic Muskoka style. “Every design process is an exploration,” he says, “and it will be interesting to see how this project will age well as the years go by.”

BUILDING A DREAM PART 6

The Muskoka Look: Luxury Lake Home Design Trends By Martha Uniacke Breen

Ever wondered exactly what’s involved with designing a brandnew cottage from scratch? Our ongoing series, Building A Dream, follows along as a family undergoes the complicated, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding process of designing and building their dream Muskoka cottage, and what we can learn from their experience. In this instalment, designer Meredith Parsons takes a look at the three most popular style categories in lakehouse interior design, and how these styles can be seen through a distinctly Muskoka lens.

20 OCTOBER 2021 ■

assis Design Studio’s senior designer, Meredith Parsons, points out that while your style is uniquely your own, most interior design falls into three general categories. When she works with clients like the family whose cottage build we’ve been following in this series, she says this is an excellent place to start to narrow down your choices. Also, she observes, “Muskoka has a unique style all its own, incorporating the landscape, the

way we enjoy the space, and the history of the area. When I work with clients, often one of our goals is helping you incorporate your own style, perhaps adapted from your year-round home, into the Muskoka vibe/landscape.” Meredith broke down for us the three main design styles that are most popular in Muskoka luxury lakeside living – and what comprises a uniquely Muskoka take on these styles. It’s a great place to start to narrow down your own unique style!

Traditional design draws on the past for inspiration, including British, New England and Old World building and decorating styles. Muskoka Traditional takes inspiration from the natural world all around us, and incorporates it into these traditions: unfinished wood furnishings, wall paneling and structural elements such as log or timber framing; natural textures like wool, birchbark, rope; complex patterns in fabrics and rugs. Granite is a classic component with flooring and of course, fireplaces, but usually as raw rather than cut stone. Walls are decorated with cottagey elements like canoe paddles, animal heads, or maps. The emphasis is on home, comfort, unpretentiousness.

The principle behind modern design is that “form follows function,” which means you think about how you live in a space and design to that purpose. Generally, modern interiors are clean, sleek, free of clutter and excess. Colour is usually low key, letting the natural colours of building materials (or the view!) do the talking, whether wood, steel, glass or cut stone. Muskoka’s beautiful vistas and relaxed lifestyle makes it very well suited to modern design. Lots of floor-to ceiling glass and open-plan interiors, the better to enjoy the view and the sunshine, are supplemented with regional touches: granite slabs with sleek straight lines (used indoors and out); natural landscape features like driftwood, which can look stunning in a simple Modernist setting.

22 OCTOBER 2021 ■

Transitional Transitional style offers the best of both worlds, and is a very easy, adaptable style to live with, particularly at the cottage. A transitional interior might combine deeply upholstered, comfortable furnishings with a modern glassand-steel coffee table, or sleek, clean-lined sofas with patterned rugs. A typical transitional colour palette tends towards neutral, muted colours, and understated design schemes with a few textures and accessories. We see mixing textures more than colours in this style. The Muskoka version of transitional style adds a relaxed, laid-back vibe rather than trying to adhere to any one design principle. Plaid, striped, even coastal patterns in fabrics and a breezy approach to decor take precedence. The design is clean, but has a lived-in feel.

WHAT’S

NEXT? BY TODD ADAIR

I’ve been noticing a strange phenomenon as the pandemic drags well into its second year. It’s hard to describe, but it seems to have seeped into almost every part of life these days. It’s this pervasive sense of… I guess the best word for it is uncertainty. OCTOBER 2021 37 ■

BUY (OR SELL) BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY NOW, NOT BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU MIGHT DO BETTER A FEW MONTHS OR A YEAR FROM NOW.

A

lot of things that we took for granted would always be available, simply aren’t. I’ll give you an example: the other day I went shopping for a bike for my ten-year-old (he’s outgrown his old one, and it’s a matter of pride for him). We drove to every bike shop in the region, and no luck: not a single bike suitable for a ten-year-old was to be found anywhere in Muskoka. Same thing when I went with a client to buy a boat to go with their new property; no boats available for sale, new or used. Tradespeople whom I could always count on to be as good as their word seem to be a lot less certain these days, too. With some of them, it used to be when they said they’d be there on Wednesday, you knew they would be. Now you might get a call early Wednesday morning, saying something’s come up and it’ll be this afternoon or tomorrow. Or maybe they don’t call at all.

38 OCTOBER 2021 ■

There are rational explanations for these things, and I am not really blaming the bike store, the boat dealer, or even my friends in the trades. It’s just part and parcel of the brave new world of Covid. Supply chains, and all kinds of normal processes, have been hugely disrupted by the pandemic and it’s had ripple effects all through the economy. But I think that’s only part of the reason this is happening.

of the world has changed, and it’s had a profound psychological effect. In the worst case, it may have involved the sudden death or illness of a loved one, or even contracting the disease yourself. But even if, so far, you’ve been blessed enough to escape its direct effects, there’s a weariness that comes with protracted vigilance.

For many of us, everything we relied on as part of the normal

For many of us, everything we relied on as part of the normal workings

workings of the world has changed, and it’s had a profound psychological effect.

Here’s my point. What’s next? Where will the uncertainty and tentativeness we’re feeling right now lead? Is this really just an unpleasant but temporary symptom of the pandemic, and once it passes, we’ll all go back to the way things were?

Or are we on the vanguard of a complete paradigm shift? I’m not suggesting I have an answer or even a strong opinion, but it’s hard to imagine that none of these changes are permanent. After all, I know people who never thought they could work out of their homes, and discovered that not only was it possible, it led to a better work/ family balance. For others, it’s led to a re-evaluation of their career choices, and some have quit their jobs (or lost them, and been forced to start new careers). The point is that everything we thought was settled fact is due for reconsideration. Now, it’s an old cliché that uncertainty is the enemy of markets, especially the stock market and the real estate market. (The fact that the stock market has continued to climb as the pandemic has worn It’s always on is another of the been notoriously ironies of the current difficult to predict where situation, but that’s another prices will go in high-demand article.) markets like the Big Three But I do Muskoka lakes; every think it’s time we thought that interesting to think about they couldn’t get how real estate any higher, could be affected.

we’ve been confounded.

It’s always been notoriously difficult to predict where prices will go in high-demand markets like the Big Three Muskoka lakes; every time we thought that they couldn’t get any higher, we’ve been confounded. But I think it’s possible that this time, it’s different. For one thing, as prices lurch into the stratosphere at least for the primary markets, the pool of increasingly wellto-do buyers that form the audience for these properties will shrink, and along with it demand, and therefore prices. (I’m not talking here about what we call the sub, or niche, markets – the smaller lakes and surrounding areas of cottage country, such as Georgian Bay.)

OCTOBER 2021 39 ■

I’m not sure if we’ve reached that upper limit yet, or whether prices will stabilize or even fall, but I suspect we are close.

Whether you’re thinking of buying or selling, you should forget everything you’ve heard about “timing” the market. There’s no such thing even in a less volatile market than this one, and it’s particularly true now.

That’s why I’ve been telling my clients that, whether you’re thinking of buying or selling, you should forget everything you’ve heard about “timing” the market. There’s no such thing even in a less volatile market than this one, and it’s particularly true now.

40 OCTOBER 2021 ■

Buy (or sell) because it’s right for you and your family now, not because you think you might do better a few months or a year from now. There truly is no way to know what’s next, especially in times like these – but that’s one piece of advice I feel confident about sharing.

THE FIRST BRAND TO COME TO MARKET FOCUSED SOLELY ON HEMP-DERIVED CBD PRODUCTS IS WHOLEHEMP.

42 OCTOBER 2021 ■

WHOLEHEMP:

High Quality & Naturally Grown Canada legalized cannabis in 2018 and since, the conversation around cannabis has predominantly focused on marijuana. Less talked about is that two decades earlier and with a whole lot less fanfare, Canada legalized hemp. Yes, hemp is cannabis. However, by legal definition it must contain less than 0.3% THC (the ingredient that marijuana is so famous for) and as such, is non-intoxicating. Few plants can boast as many uses and beneficial properties as hemp. Historically, it was the world’s dominant fibre crop and Canadian hemp is mostly grown for its nutritious seed, to name a few. One of the most remarkable aspects of hemp, however, is that it is naturally high in CBD (cannabidiol). As a safe, non-addictive and non-intoxicating substance, CBD is one of more than a hundred "phytocannabinoids," which are unique to cannabis and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile. It is these properties that have made hemp so attractive to a new cohort of cannabis businesses

now bringing high quality, value priced, hempbased CBD products to Canadian consumers. The first brand to come to market focused solely on hemp-derived CBD products is WholeHemp. All of WholeHemp’s products are made with high CBD hemp flower grown outdoors by Ontario craft farmers, all of whom are women. Their products are all full spectrum CBD, meaning they contain CBD as well as other trace cannabinoids and terpenes (aromatic molecules found in the essential oils of plants). Together, these properties have a synergistic effect commonly known as the entourage effect. Their flagship product and the first to market is their all-botanical, artisanally produced WholeHemp CBD Cream. This cream achieves it’s great feel by whipping full spectrum WholeHemp CBD oil into pure Shea Butter, giving it a high viscosity and light texture. It is packaged in a beautiful, reusable amble glass bottle, characteristic of the company’s commitment to sustainability.

ost brokerages advise you to put your property into the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system, in order to get it in front of the greatest number of prospective buyers possible. But when it comes to Muskoka property – especially in the current market – that may not be the best, or even most desirable, route for you. Cayman Marshall has a better way to market your property, which not only ensures that only serious, wellqualified buyers view your property, but allows you to maintain your privacy and avoid the stress and hustle of listing with MLS. With a Cayman Marshall exclusive listing, your property will only be visible to members of our proprietary database. Personal viewing appointments are only scheduled after our agents have taken prospective buyers through a careful pre-screening process.

True, this sensory overload (in the best possible way) may be slightly elevated by my impulsive Bath and Bodyworks Candle haul. But even undeterred by overpriced 3-wick bliss, parented by Mother Nature herself, the natural, autumnal aroma has arrived. And I am here for it. Goodbye, smoggy heatwaves. So long, malevolent wasp nests. ’Til next year, sugary seltzers. For we are entering a season of sophistication. A season

By Brooke Madden

of colourful landscapes, a season of butternut squash and other savoury soups, a season of children returning to the classroom, a season of giving thanks for (among other things) children returning to the classroom. Perhaps, most notably, a season of boozy elevation. Say farewell to your seltzers, radlers, coolers and frozen fiascos, and indulge with me in some of the best wines Ontario has to offer this season. I’ve yet to discover an autumnal pairing more calming, more well-deserved, more joyful, more emblematic of tranquility, peace, and a long, long exhale, more poetic even, more harmonious than a crisp fall day, and a large glass of wine. And while, with no judgement (though perhaps mild envy) from me, your favourite bottle can be enjoyed on the couch in front

of a Harry Potter marathon; sometimes, it’s best to go all out. And with the virus that shall not be named subsiding, certain Ontario wineries have begun offering exciting, educational, tasteful (no pun intended) experiences this Fall/Winter season. Gather your partner, your girlfriends, your sister, or any other sommelier-intraining you may be acquainted with. Adorn yourselves with blanket scarves, flannels, and beanies. Enjoy the scenic drive to wine country. Support your local vineyards. Educate yourself about your favourite beverages, and maybe get a little tipsy along the way. Soak up that remarkably fresh autumnal aroma that pairs so decadently with a glass of vino. Because the vineyards I’m going to introduce you to are colourful, creative, and thriving at this time of year.

ine can be fun, wine can be tongue in cheek, and we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously!” says Erin Mitchell of Megalomaniac wines. This self-aware, clever winery offers premium wines and experiences, but with less of the ego that can sometimes be associated with wine making. “We’re all about a dichotomy of formality and fun!” Erin continues. Located on the Bench of the Niagara Escarpment, Megalomaniac is home to a 90acre vineyard. “It’s one of the highest spots on the Niagara Escarpment, which makes it an absolutely stunning, beautiful property to visit. The winery is in the middle of this expensive, rolling vineyard, and surrounded by the trees of the Escarpment, the Bruce Trail, and looks down with a view on to Lake Ontario,” Erin explains. Since the pandemic, Megalomaniac’s visitor experience has changed in

a permanent way. After undergoing a complete cosmetic refresh, the team at Megalomaniac now offers a dining area - Megalomaniac Food & Drink. “Up until the end of October, we’ll be offering our sparkling brunch, and light fare and small plates for lunch and dinner. We have an all-weather patio. It’s glassed in, with a roof with open elements - a rain or shine patio. And it will be heated too!” says Erin. Up until the end of October, Megalomaniac will also be offering their “Insta-worthy” vineyard walks. Sip and stroll with a glass of Megalomaniac wine, while being led to some of the best photo opportunities available on the property. You’ll learn a thing or two about the winemaking process as well!

73

IT’S ONE OF THE HIGHEST SPOTS ON THE NIAGARA ESCARPMENT, WHICH MAKES IT AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY TO VISIT. From November onward, Megalomaniac is excited to be offering a Winter Wine Bar. Though not an indoor, fully-heated experience, a cozy, wine-bar patio option will be available, overlooking the vineyard’s stunning views. In addition, Megalomaniac is excited to introduce their new tasting rooms. “We’ve taken multiple spaces within the winery and turned them into private (or small group setting) tasting rooms. Guests have a selection of four different tastings to choose from. Each of the tasting rooms is designed with breathtaking views in mind,” explains Erin.

P

erhaps one of the most iconic vineyards in the province, Peller Estates has historically offered exclusive experiences for wine lovers. Located in Niagara on the Lake, this winery and restaurant has creatively adapted to this last couple of years’ one and only* constant: change. *It should be noted that the quality and superb deliciousness of a glass of Peller Estates wine is also one of life’s constants. Year round, Peller Estates proudly offers their “Greatest Winery Tour.” Peller invites you to “immerse

yourself in everything our world class winery has to offer from vine to cellar on this leisurely and engaging tour experience.” The tour begins with a glass of sparkling wine, taking you through the underground barrel cellar, exposing you to Niagara's only igloo-like lounge, the 10Below Icewine Lounge, and concluding in Peller’s stunning boutique - the tour is dubbed the “greatest” for a reason. Further experiences that are not limited to the summer months include a Seated Tasting Experience, where you’ll be able to select three wines and engage for 40 minutes with a wine consultant to learn more about your favourite glasses, and aid you in realizing your at-home wine rack dreams.

WINERY FEATURE | OCTOBER 2021

If you’re feeling festive, it should be noted that Megalomaniac is planning on curating a robust, impressive offering of items for Christmas shoppers this year. “How great would it be to come to Niagara, do your shopping, and then while you’re here, hang out at the Winter Wine Bar and enjoy a beautiful glass of wine looking over the vineyard?” Erin suggests. To me, that sounds infinitely better than a trip to a crowded Eaton Centre during the holiday season!

If you’re looking to gift an experience this holiday season, a trip to the Peller Estates Winery & Restaurant is sure to impress. “We will most likely offer specialty dining events during the fall/winter months too, depending on COVID restrictions. We have created wine experiences at our newly built ‘Veranda’ overlooking the vineyards that run about 45 minutes and allow our wine consultants a deeper conversation and tasting experiences of back vintages and current portfolio with each guest.” Architecturally influenced by Italian Renaissance design, a visit to Two Sisters Vineyards is a visit to a European oasis, in the heart of wine country. “It was a pure passion project for our family that has evolved into a very special, personal and rewarding endeavour,” say the sisters.

Melissa and Angela proudly maintain a personal connection with each element of the vineyard - part of what makes an experience at Two Sisters particularly special. “When guests come to spend their time with us, it is like us inviting them into our home and all of our team members understand the importance and dedication to the customer experience.” From the way the winemaker crafts their wines, to the ingredients in the dishes, to how the candles are arranged in their barrel cellar, the sisters are involved to create sensory, educational experiences.

In addition to the Veranda experiences, the sisters are working diligently to perfect their tour program, launching late fall. “We have a private and corporate events program that includes both wine and culinary experiences and can be customizable to the wants and needs of the host. We have planned exciting masterclasses that will have guests tasting through cellar wines together with our TSV esteemed estate sommeliers in our intimate barrel cellar. These experiences are very wine focused and educational. Winemaker dinners have been scheduled to take place this fall and winter which will showcase our culinary creations from our popular winery restaurant, Kitchen76, carefully paired with our range of library and current wines by our winemaker, Adam Pearce, who will host the dinner.”

An Exclusive Experience A

s one of Canada’s most awarded wineries, Jackson-Triggs has made a real impact on the Canadian wine scene. With an emphasis on inclusivity, diversity, and fostering a brand that includes all Canadians, Jackson-Triggs is one of my personal favourite wineries to support – not only for their commitments to better the Canadian wine community, but for their seriously delicious products! I had the opportunity to speak with Abby Wood of the Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate to learn a little more about what the winery has to offer this upcoming Fall/Winter season. Abby told

me about their Wine Club subscription, and how it can elevate your upcoming visitor experience. “We offer really great experiences for our Wine Club members. It’s like a magazine subscription, but instead of a magazine, you get wine delivered to your door, and complimentary experiences throughout the year,” says Abby. Wine club members experience exclusive perks like holiday dinners as well. “We always do a holiday party for members - a seven-course dinner, all complimentary. Members get the winery to themselves, and can explore different food stations,” she explains. If you’re not a Wine Club member, there is still plenty to enjoy at Jackson-Triggs. aren’t confirmed at the moment due to COVID, stay tuned to see who will be playing at the estate’s iconic venue. Jackson-Triggs is also hoping to offer workshops this year - a Thanksgiving floral centrepiece workshop, and a wreath-making workshop for the holidays. According to Abby, the “Explore Your Senses” experience is not one to miss. “We do these quite a lot for corporate bookings. It’s a stationed dinner event. You’ll get a map of the winery when you arrive, the full menu, and there’s a wine bar at each food station so you can try multiple pairings throughout the evening. The decor is always unique. You really get a lot of flexibility here with such a large facility to be able to accommodate individual wants!” says Abby.

This just in: “Jackson-Triggs is also very known for our sparkling wine portfolio. Keep your eyes peeled, because we’re hoping to release an all-new sparkling wine in January!” Abby disclosed. Stay tuned! jacksontriggswinery.com

I

f you’re anything like me, you’re a huge fan of Wayne Gretzky Estates’ wines, beers, and whiskies. I’ll admit, I’m not a hockey person (I know, I know, revoke my citizenship). But if I can get my hands on a decanted glass of Wayne Gretzky Whisky Oak Aged Red (a seamless blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cab Sauv) while the game is on - I’m going to have a very nice time indeed. While my hockey-playing boyfriend and I appreciate the acclaimed legend for different reasons, a date to Wayne Gretzky Estates is always a hit for the both of us. “There’s always something happening at Wayne Gretzky

Estates in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Choose from wine and whisky tastings with a twist, interactive classes, memorable meals, festive fetes, icy winter fun on our skating rink and so much more!” says Wayne Gretzky Estates. In addition to the aforementioned awesomeness, Wayne Gretzky Estates is also home to a whisky bar, where patrons can enjoy their experience “from the stands” - an excellent way to warm up after winter fun outdoors.

WINERY FEATURE | OCTOBER 2021

Another exciting event JacksonTriggs enjoys is the “Mom Market,” a large event with multiple pop-up vendors. Abby is looking forward to their Halloween-themed adaptation of the traditional Mom Market on October 23rd. Kid friendly, with a screen projecting Halloween films, it's geared so that parents can relax with their favourite glass of Jackson-Triggs wine and browse the local vendors.

More Than Just A Winery

78 This year, Wayne Gretzky Estates is excited to offer an elevated seated tasting experience in their cozy tasting hall. Choose four options from their wine, whisky and beer portfolio. Uniquely, Wayne Gretzky Estates offers guests the opportunity to fill out the back of their tasting menus and hand them over to an expert. The team member will then do your shopping for you based on your preferences, and you’ll be able to pick it up in the retail store.

WAYNE GRETZKY ESTATES TRULY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE - HOCKEY AND WINE FANS ALIKE.

“Wine, whisky and beer production may be a world away from the hockey rink, but there are some surprising similarities between the way Wayne Gretzky played and coached the game and the experience you will have at Wayne Gretzky Estates. There is the same commitment to greatness,” the estate says. Learn more about your favourite wines, beers, and whiskies, and get a behind-the-scenes look at production on a 30-minute guided tour of the estate offered daily.

WINERY FEATURE | OCTOBER 2021

Finally, perhaps most uniquely, lace up your skates and hit the ice! Open mid December until mid March (weather permitting), the Wayne Gretzky Estates’ signature Skating Rink provides fun for the whole family. Wayne Gretzky Estates truly has something for everyone hockey and wine fans alike. Bonus points if you’re both!

Enjoy the Season I hope I’ve been able to aid you in realizing your boozy autumnal dreams. Regularly check the websites of the wineries listed to ensure you’re staying up to date with the experiences these
