What is
EVS?
European Voluntary Service (EVS) is one of the programmes funded by European Commission, within Youth in Action Programme. The aim is to develop solidarity and promote tolerance, mutual understanding and active citizenship (particularly European citizenship). The aim of the European Voluntary Service (EVS) is to develop solidarity and promote active citizenship and mutual understanding among young people. The European Voluntary Service enables young people to carry out voluntary service for up to 12 months in a country other than their country of residence. It fosters solidarity among young people and is a true “learning service. Beyond benefiting local communities, volunteers learn new skills and languages, and discover other cultures. Non-formal learning principles and practice are reflected throughout the project. 3
ESIA Voluntary Service Volunteerism for Global Education and Understanding
The “ESIA Voluntary Service – Volunteerism for Global Education and Understanding” project aims to develop a sustainable partnership mechanism between Asia and European youth organizations working on volunteerism as an entry point to ensure young people’s participation, empowerment and commitment to address different social challenges that affects them. 4
This project is designed to use Global Education as a transformative learning tool which will lead all the partners to deeply understand each unique culture and transforming the culture of individualism towards a culture of partnership based on dialogue and cooperation. Building from the global education initiatives will ensure a partnership model that can lead into an international understanding and cooperation between nations and peoples. 5

Volunteering for CiA is not just a way through which young people can discover new cultures and countries. It is a process of deep self-discovery and self-development, an efficient way of active participation and awareness of the role that active citizens can play in the global arena. We believe and we have experienced this first hand, that through volunteering, an international community of friendship is created, a community based on mutual respect, understanding and caring. A community that the more it expands, the more our dream of a peaceful and just world comes closer to reality.

In institutionalizing youth volunteerism and movement, the European Voluntary Service (EVS) has paved the way for fostering solidarity and mutual understanding, and promoting active citizenship among young people around the world. Young people, who are often in the path of selfdiscovery, find themselves being empowered by the unique volunteering experiences provided by the program through a variety of alternative learning methods and intercultural activities. YSDA has always believed in volunteerism as a way to uplift communities and promote nation-building little by little. It gives us pride to be keenly involved in this project and witness young people from different countries join together to exchange cultures, learn about each other and work for a common goal. While there is much to still be done, we believe providing young people the opportunity to volunteer, see the world and expand their horizons motivate them further to fulfill their role in all aspects of decision-making, at home and abroad.
