Economics Programs M.A. in Applied Economics
Concentrations
The M.A. in Applied Economics is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in economic analysis combined with an ability to apply the tools of economic analysis to contemporary problems faced by businesses and governments. While students in this program are expected to master the core theoretical principles, the main emphasis is upon developing skills that will allow the graduate to be able to employ those theoretical and quantitative methods of analysis in a variety of applied settings. Particular emphasis is therefore placed on the development of quantitative and analytical skills. While this program is designed primarily for those seeking a terminal degree, the level of theoretical training provided also provides those who would like to pursue a doctoral degree in economics with the theoretical background necessary to do so.
Students may choose to pursue a formal concentration in Econometrics and Statistics or Economic Development. • The concentration in Econometrics and Statistics requires at least 6 hours of coursework in econometrics and statistics beyond the required courses in econometrics and statistics. • The concentration in Economic Development requires at least 6 hours of coursework in economic development. • The concentration in General Economics requires 9 hours of economics or related courses beyond the 21 core required courses. • Courses are offered in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics and Statistics, Economic Development, Labor Economics, International Economics, and Economic Statistics.

The M.A. in Geography will assist students in acquiring the skills needed for independent geographic research, including organizational and communication skills. It will enable students to develop a concentration in a particular aspect of the field. At the same time, each program is individually designed to suit career or personal objectives. Students may prepare for a geographic career in government, business and industry, or for pursuit of a higher degree.

M.A. in Sociology The M.A. in Sociology will develop an advanced understanding of the significant features and processes of human society through a focus on both research and teaching. The program prepares competent professionals for careers in research, education, government, and private enterprise. This is a six credit hour sequence in linear regression and design of experiments. This sequence gives a thorough study of many of the most widely used topics in regression analysis and design of experiments. The emphasis is on applications and the computation of these procedures. At the end of the first year, M.S. students must pass the Statistics Department Graduate Examinations (DGE), a written exam on the material covered in the two firstyear sequences.
