A

from the President-Executive Director

s President-Executive Director of The First Tee Miami, it is my pleasure to invite you to the 35th consecutive year of the Doral-Publix Jr. Classic. It is the most successful international event of its kind. This year, we expect more than 600 participants representing countries from all corners of the world to enjoy the hospitality of Miami and the world-class Doral Golf Resort. The Board of Directors, sponsors, members, and volunteers have worked diligently to ensure that this year’s event will be the best in our history. Our Media Guide provides a wealth of information regarding past events and our plans for this year. Our main goal is “Helping Youth Through Golf” to become better golfers and become good citizens that refelect the wellness and fitness components of the Nine Core Values of the First Tee Miami program. We are continuously adding excellent training programs, golf workshops and clinics, and tournament events to provide opportunities to improve golf performance. However, The First Tee Miami has added mentoring programs, after-school tutoring sessions, and college preparatory classes to prepare our youngsters for advanced education and for the skills they need when they enter the real world. The Doral-Publix Jr. Classic provides the perfect opportunity for all participating youngsters to interact and gain these insights from their peers and to develop a world view no matter what country they represent. As I always say: The most effective way of getting involved in your commitment is to . . . get involved! Let the Doral-Publix Jr. Classic help you get started. ⌾ Sincerely, Charles DeLucca Jr. / Charles DeLucca III

Letter from the Executive Editor It is a special privilege to be the Executive Editor of the 35th Edition of the Official Media Guide for the Doral Publix Junior Golf Tournament. I have enjoyed working alongside a group of dedicated professionals that develops amazing initiatives for young golfers. Under the direction of Charlie DeLucca and Charlie DeLucca III, this event has grown over its history of success involving the participation of more than 650 youngsters and their families representing more than 55 countries who come to the beautiful Doral Golf Resort & Spa during the month of December. More than 16,000 players have participated during the tournament’s long career.

dedication and commitment and the ongoing efforts of the DeLuccas, we look forward to many more successful events which develop young golfers and well-prepared citizens of the world.

It takes the combined efforts of the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who work tirelessly alongside Charlie DeLucca in his continuing support of youth activities to ensure the success of this event so that the participants feel at home, enjoy a good time, and interact with their peers from many countries. One of the most important aspects of the event is the inspiration to develop the skills necessary to overcome obstacles in their personal development through the nine core values of the First Tee program.

Jose L. Barletta, M.S.

In designing this guide, we have included information about those who have participated in the tournament since its inception, sponsors, prior winners, notes, interviews, and testimonials to add to the importance of the event. This year’s guide includes a special section on new products and a focus on girls in golf. By incorporating the technological advances of the Internet and social networking, this guide is accessible to national and international media hoping to reach youngsters from all corners of the world to become part of this special annual activity. It provides the capabilities for everyone to feel as if they were here participating, meeting the players and their families, and knowing the proud history of the Doral Publix Junior Classic. Finally, I wish to thank the entire team led by Joel Furnari, Developer and Director of the Official Media Guide, The First Tee of Miami, and John Reed and Carole Miller who provided historical information of the event. Thanks to their

Good luck to the participants, and I look forward to seeing you soon. ⌾ Executive Editor and President of Barnews Research Group and Miami Opportunities

Nine

Healthy Habits The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits were created through a collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The healthy habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part of The First Tee. They are formatted for easy understanding and learning by elementary-age students and chapter participants.

Physical:

Emotional:

Social:

Energy

Vision

Friends

It is important to understand and make healthy choices about when to eat, how much to eat, and the types of food and drinks to provide the body with the most useful energy.

In order to make the most of one’s unique gifts -talents, characteristics and abilities- an individual needs to learn from the past, value the present, create their vision and future to ultimately “leave a footprint.”

Maintaining healthy relationships includes surrounding oneself with friends and supportive people, while effectively handling challenging situations, including bullying and navigating the digital age with social media.

Play A variety of energizing play can help the body stay strong, lean and fit, and be fun in the process. Sleep and other forms of “re-charging” allow one to engage in play on a daily basis.

Safety Physical safety includes playing in a safe environment and by the rules, protecting the body with proper equipment, warm-up and cool-down and wearing sun protection.

14

Mind The mind is a powerful tool for health. One’s mind influences his/her emotions and behaviors and can be utilized for self-improvement, building confidence and maintaining perspective.

School Success in school - learning, building relationships and contributing to the school environment - leads to success in other areas of life.

Family

Community

When family members participate in activities together – share meals, communicate and establish roles and responsibilities – they are more likely to be successful in achieving their healthrelated goals.

Like the health of one’s body, it is important to also explore the health of one’s community and discover how one can give back and care for its environment and safety.

Honesty

4

Respect

7

Perseverance

The quality or state of being truthful; not deceptive. Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves.

To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem. In golf it is important to show respect for oneself, playing partners, fellow competitors, the golf course, and for the honor and traditions of the game.

To persist in an idea, purpose or task despite obstacles. To succeed in golf, players must continue through bad breaks and their own mistakes, while learning from past experiences.

2

Integrity

5

Confidence

8

Courtesy

By participating in The First Tee, young people are introduced to core values which are reinforced throughout the program. Parents are encouraged to reinforce these behaviors by talking about them, what they mean and what these behaviors look like at home.

Strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct. Personal honesty and independence. Golf is a game of honesty, etiquette and composure. You are responsible for your actions and personal conduct on the golf course.

Reliance or trust. A feeling of self-assurance. Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that one achieves. Players can increase confidence in their abilities by being positive and focusing on something they are doing well regardless of the outcome.

Considerate behavior toward others; a polite remark or gesture. A round of golf should begin and end with a handshake between fellow competitors. Show courtesy toward others by remaining still and quiet while they prepare and execute a shot.

3

Sportmanship

6

Responsibility

9

Judgment

Observing the rules of play and winning or losing with grace. You must know and abide by the rules of golf and be able to conduct yourself in a respectful manner.

Accounting for one’s actions; dependable. Players are responsible for their actions on the golf course. It is up to them to keep score, repair divots, rake bunkers, repair ball marks on the green, and keep up with the pace of play.

The ability to make a decision or form an opinion. Using good judgment is very important in golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot players consider executing, as well as making healthy choices on and off the golf course.

Playing golf -and studying hard- may get girls a college scholarship BY BILL VAN SMITH Special to the Miami Herald

A gift doesn’t always have to be something that you tear the wrapping paper off and hold in your hands. Ask Chanel Gonzalez. At age 18, she received something much more valuable — the gift of education. “I’m so thankful for this,” Chanel said. Chanel is attending BirminghamSouthern College in Birmingham, Alabama, mainly because of her own determination but also thanks to The First Tee of Miami and the Orange Bowl Committee, two organizations that locked hands in a program to help female golfers attend college. The First Tee has been helping kids for half a century. The OBC wisely knew that history and enlisted an experienced partner to help achieve what it wanted to accomplish — to get more girls into college through scholarships. The reason that can be successfully done is simple: In the world of women’s college golf, about 30 percent of scholarships go unused. “The Orange Bowl has never before invested in an initiative focused solely on women’s athletics,” said former OBC chairperson Lee Stapleton, a Miami attorney who helped establish the golf program. “I’ve long envisioned something that would make a difference in the lives of young women, empowering them to achieve their greatest of dreams.” One of those lives would be Chanel, a standout student.

Chanel Gonzalez, a recipient of a golf scholarship thanks to The First Tee and the Orange Bowl Committee, practices her swing. Bill Van Smith

In high school, at Young Women’s Preparatory Academy in Miami, she earned a 3.5 unweighted grade-point average. She decided she wanted to attend Birmingham-Southern because she liked the golf program and the school’s academic reputation. “It’s one of the best schools in Alabama, right after the University of Alabama itself. I want to get a degree in biology and possibly become a dermatologist,” she said. The First Tee and OBC happily helped her in reaching her college goal because she was the type of individual they were looking to assist. Now, she is in college — far from the comforts of home. “Pretty much, if I’m not studying, I’m playing golf,” Chanel said with a laugh. She acknowledged that being on her own has been an adjustment. “Nobody wakes you up, nobody tells you to go to class, nobody tells you to meet with your professor,” she said. She has done all those things — and more. “I’ve grown academically,” Chanel said, “and I’ve grown as a person.” Those are the first two assessments she makes of college life. Her third? “My golf game has also gotten better,” she says. Chanel hasn’t forgotten what people have done for her, particularly The First Tee, which she has attended since she

was 11. She is one of many young people whom The First Tee has encouraged, nurtured and told they have no limits. Charlie DeLucca Jr. created the program at Melreese/International Links Golf Course back in 1963. Since then, he and The First Tee have helped thousands of kids stay on track academically through tutoring, homework help and guidance. Says Chanel: “The First Tee is not about your golf game. It’s about home and community and learning and other people. After that, golf comes along. The First Tee has always given me emotional support.” Indeed, she calls The First Tee and International Links “my other home.” Chanel grew up a block or two from the golf course. Once she got home from school, she would sling her golf bag and school backpack over her shoulder and walk to the course. She would then spend the first hour or two at The First Tee studying, doing homework and being tutored in a classroom with computers, books and other learning aids. “They say ‘Let us help you become a better person, rather than just become a better golfer,’” Chanel said. When she returns home to Miami during college breaks, Chanel said she will head straight to The First Tee building at International Links. She will tutor kids just like she was tutored as a child. “When I arrived at Birmingham-Southern, people told me I was home,” she said. “That is true, but my heart is in both places, there and Miami.”

TESTIMONIALS

TESTIMONIALS In 2003, The First Tee Miami became a reality as a growth product of The Dade Amateur Golf Association. By participating in The First Tee, young people are introduced to core values and healthy habits, which are reinforced throughout the program. Parents are encouraged to support these behaviors by talking about them, what they mean and what these behaviors look like at home. Below are some reflections from our present First Tee participants as to their personal growth through The First Tee.

When I was eleven years old, my Dad and I walked onto Melreese Golf Course.

TESTIMONIALS

The First Tee of Miami is an enormous part of my life. It helps me in many different ways. They offer me different resources that allow me to apply the nine core values in my daily life. The friends and coaches that I have met through the First Tee of Miami program, encourage me every step of the way.

Ana Carolina Ojeda

It all started when I was 5 years old. I was watching television one day, and all of a sudden an ad on the First Tee of Miami popped up. It talked about the core values, and rules of golf. I turned to my dad and said that’s where I want to go.

Without the First Tee, I probably wouldn’t be the same person I am today. I owe a lot of thanks to Charlie DeLucca and the staff for helping me persevere when I felt I couldn’t.

The First Tee has done a lot for me, not only has it got me to where I am in golf, but it has also taught me life and leadership qualities.

Thank you DAGA and the First Tee Miami for all you do for us junior golfers.

I remember when I first started out in the First Tee Miami; I would attend the Joe Roach clinic with my sister. We would show up in jeans and not talk too much, but the program allowed us to develop. It provided a safe and comfortable environment where I wasn’t afraid to come out of my shell and talk to people.

Education: Stephen Stern I am Stephen Stern, Owner and Manager of Stern Learning LLC, which is the official education company of The First Tee Miami. My contribution to The First Tee is to assist in the the educational development of participants of all grade levels, income levels and education backgrounds. This is done through activities such as daily tutoring, standardized testing boot camps, and college résumé building. 48

My history at The First Tee began when I was old enough to hold a golf club, playing in DAGA tournaments before International Links adopted The First Tee name. I became a mathematics tutor in Orlando, and upon moving back to Miami started a program that allowed me to give back to the community that had given me so much: The First Tee Miami.

The René Lacoste Foundation opened the door for many young women to benefit, especially the skilled teen player. After implementing this program, we formed a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to create a weekly clinic that became the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy. This clinic today has evolved into our Drive for Excellence Program with the Orange Bowl.

MENTOR-MENTEE PROGRAM

Four of the largest law firms in Miami-Dade County sent their interns to the First Tee Learning Center to mentor our older First Tee participants on the realities of life and sharing their stories of success and potential pitfalls.

58

Since they were young enough to relate well to the kids and old enough to know about life’s challenges, their participation was well received. Our young men and women gained insight into the realities of climbing the ladder of success. In return, our First Tee golfers gave back to the interns by offering them golf instruction. The interaction increased the effectiveness between mentor and mentee.

EDUCATING THE PUBLIC Rules Seminar In our efforts to grow the game of golf, we host regular rules seminars from the Florida State Golf Association. This particular event was held in February of 2016, with the intention of increasing the number of local rules officials. By doing so, we enhance our opportunities to help and prepare young golfers for their future golf endeavors. Over 25 people took part in the session which covered all aspects of golf rules and regulations.

We provided the bases for standard bearers and shot link personnel. With our assistance, the tournament was able to give millions of dollars to local charities. With the Doral tournament no longer part of the PGA tour and no longer an annual event in our town, we have experienced a significant loss in founding. Fortunately the First Tee Miami has turned its focus to the Latin American Tour Championships.

Erik Compton is a PGA professional who received his start at International Links Miami Melreese Country Club. He did this as a recreational pursuit after his heart complications as a 12-year-old boy. He has since developed into a young man who appreciates what golf has done for him and gives back to his transplant foundation in many ways. One way is by hosting the Erik Compton golf classic at Melreese

Country Club to help fund his foundation and draw awareness to the importance of transplant procedures. This past year’s event found Sergio Garcia, British Open Champion Henrik Stenson, Jim Furyk, Chi Chi Rodriquez and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano playing a four-hole exhibition prior to the four-man scramble format. A portion of the proceeds from this tournament also goes to the First Tee Miami.

& DAGA

PARTNERSHIP The Dade Amateur Golf Association (DAGA) was founded in 1963 and has been instrumental in the continuing development of junior golf in South Florida. Through various programming and fundraising activities DAGA has been an agent of support and positive change for the entire community which has impacted all individuals including those with and without disabilities. DAGA began working directly with Special Olympics in 1991 to bring golf to the world of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Annually, they host 2,916 athletes with disabilities throughout Miami Dade County. In 1990, the City of Miami Programs for Persons with Disabilities coordinated and implemented the inaugural Edward James Olmos Golf Classic which was later known as the City of Miami Golf Classic, to raise money for its programs. From its inception DAGA participated (and won the first year) in the tournament which was held at the Miami Springs Country Club and assisted the program with its fundraising effort. In 1994, DAGA became the driving force and spearheaded the organizing, fundraising, logistics and operations of the Golf Tournament for the City of Miami. This meant a significant milestone for this grassroots fundraiser bringing it to the next level with its expertise and resources. It has continued to be a premiere event for the city. DAGA under the leadership of The De Lucca Family has been instrumental in being an agent of relentless support and advocacy for our programs for persons with disabilities. So much so, that the City of Miami on October 12, 2001 inaugurated the Sandra DeLucca Developmental Center

which is the only facility of its kind in the City of Miami that’s dedicated exclusively and services to all the individuals with developmental disabilities that participate in the center. Throughout the years the funds raised have purchased vehicles, materials, supplies, furnishings, field trips and it also underwrites and sponsors special events and has directly procured the operation of our summer camp and GET FIT program. These recreation and sports programs have brought the art of fitness training to youngsters with developmental disabilities to an award winning level. In 2014 our GET FIT Softball Team represented Special Olympics Florida in the Special Olympics National Games in Princeton, NJ where our team won the National Silver Medal. The Sandra De Lucca Developmental Center’s success would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the DeLucca Family and DAGA’s unyielding commitment to Miami’s children and adults with physical and developmental challenges. A quarter century of love and devotion to making life a little better for those who need it the most and are often forgotten. To another 25 years of this successful partnership!
