Welcome Letter from the Executive Editor

I

t is a special privilege to be the Executive Editor of the 37th Edition of the Official Media Guide for the Doral Publix Junior Golf Tournament.

I have enjoyed working alongside a group of dedicated professionals that develops amazing initiatives for young golfers. Under the direction of Charlie DeLucca and Charlie DeLucca III, this event has grown over its history of success involving the participation of more than 650 youngsters and their families representing more than 55 countries who come to the beautiful Doral Golf Resort & Spa during the month of December. More than 16,000 players have participated during the tournament’s long career. It takes the combined efforts of the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who work tirelessly alongside Charlie DeLucca in his continuing support of youth activities to ensure the success of this event so that the participants feel at home, enjoy a good time, and interact with their peers from many countries. One of the most important aspects of the event is the inspiration to develop the skills necessary to overcome obstacles in their personal development through the nine core values of the First Tee program. In designing this guide, we have included information about

those who have participated in the tournament since its inception, sponsors, prior winners, notes, interviews, and testimonials to add to the importance of the event. This year’s guide includes a special section on new products and a focus on girls in golf. Good luck to the participants, and I look forward to seeing you soon. ⌾ Jose L. Barletta, M.S. What elementary school physical education experts say about The First Tee National School Program.

While teaching [this program], the confidence level of students improves from beginning to end of the lesson.

Impact Outcomes and Educators’ responses from 2008 and 2012 surveys:

–Physical educator, Kingwood, TX

I am particularly excited that we’ve been able to tie skills to the larger picture of what we want a student to grow up and look like and sound like as an adult. We are very grateful for this program. – Principal, Jacksonville, FL

100 98 79 66 % 100% reported that the lessons helped students learn basic golf motor skills

% 98% rated the curriculum as “excellent” or “good”

% 66% incorporated the Nine Core Values in their other sports and activities

% 79% incorporated the Nine Core Values during lessons

SHAPE America National Standards

Our curriculum addresses all five national physical education standards developed by the Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Results from an independent review commissioned by the PGA of America 1

• The program is very well laid out and presented in a way that even the non-golf inclined teacher can comprehend and teach. • Safety is evident throughout the program and will allow for optimum activity and safety of participants. • Curriculum does an excellent job of including lessons on sportsmanship and the importance of personal and social responsibility. • Overall Evaluation: Strong and engaging program that if properly implemented will teach far more than golf to elementary students. 1

Effect of The First Tee on Students

The First Tee National School Program

The First Tee Life Skills Experience

In 2013, The First Tee authorized a case study to examine the National School Program in a district that included a chapter of The First Tee. 2

Findings There was a positive, or additive effect for students receiving The First Tee program material at school and at the chapter. Case study participants who attended The First Tee Life Skills Experience at the chapter in addition to the experience in the school setting showed the most beneďŹ ts from the National School Program. Students participating in lessons at school and at the chapter self-reported engaging in more of the following desirable behaviors compared to students only receiving lessons from one of the programs: 1) 2) 3) 4)

knowing how to behave knowing how to work with others taking care of equipment playing for fun

Findings from the 2013 case study of The First Tee National School Program support a long-standing belief in the power of the additive effect in promoting positive youth development. Healthy Habits The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits were created through a collaboration among The First Tee and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The healthy habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part of The First Tee. They are formatted for easy understanding and learning by elementary-age students and chapter participants.

PHYSICAL Energy

Play

Safety

It is important to understand and make healthy choices about when to eat, how much to eat, and the types of food and drinks to provide the body with the most useful energy.

A variety of energizing play can help the body stay strong, lean and fit, and be fun in the process. Sleep and other forms of “re-charging” allow one to engage in play on a daily basis.

Physical safety includes playing in a safe environment and by the rules, protecting the body with proper equipment, warm-up and cool-down and wearing sun protection.

EMOTIONAL Vision

Mind

Family

In order to make the most of one’s unique gifts -talents, characteristics and abilities- an individual needs to learn from the past, value the present, create their vision and future to ultimately “leave a footprint.”

The mind is a powerful tool for health. One’s mind influences his/her emotions and behaviors and can be utilized for self-improvement, building confidence and maintaining perspective.

When family members participate in activities together – share meals, communicate and establish roles and responsibilities – they are more likely to be successful in achieving their health-related goals.

SOCIAL

14

Friends

School

Community

Maintaining healthy relationships includes surrounding oneself with friends and supportive people, while effectively handling challenging situations, including bullying and navigating the digital age with social media.

Success in school - learning, building relationships and contributing to the school environment - leads to success in other areas of life.

Like the health of one’s body, it is important to also explore the health of one’s community and discover how one can give back and care for its environment and safety.

Nine Core Values

By participating in The First Tee, young people are introduced to core values which are reinforced throughout the program. Parents are encouraged to reinforce these behaviors by talking about them, what they mean and what these behaviors look like at home.

1

Honesty The quality or state of being

truthful; not deceptive. Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves.

4

Respect

To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem. In golf it is important to show respect for oneself, playing partners, fellow competitors, the golf course, and for the honor and traditions of the game.

7

Perseverance

To persist in an idea, purpose or task despite obstacles. To succeed in golf, players must continue through bad breaks and their own mistakes, while learning from past experiences.

2

Integrity

5

Confidence

Strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct. Personal honesty and independence. Golf is a game of honesty, etiquette and composure. You are responsible for your actions and personal conduct on the golf course.

Reliance or trust. A feeling

of self-assurance. Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that one achieves. Players can increase confidence in their abilities by being positive and focusing on something they are doing well regardless of the outcome.

8

Courtesy Considerate behavior toward

others; a polite remark or gesture. A round of golf should begin and end with a handshake between fellow competitors. Show courtesy toward others by remaining still and quiet while they prepare and execute a shot.

Sportmanship

6

Responsibility

9

Judgment

Observing the rules of play and winning or losing with grace. You must know and abide by the rules of golf and be able to conduct yourself in a respectful manner.

Accounting for one’s actions; dependable. Players are responsible for their actions on the golf course. It is up to them to keep score, repair divots, rake bunkers, repair ball marks on the green, and keep up with the pace of play.

The ability to make a decision or form an opinion. Using good judgment is very important in golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot players consider executing, as well as making healthy choices on and off the golf course.

SPECIAL NEEDS GOLF TRAINING

The First Tee Miami has launched an exciting new networking, mentorship, and fundraising initiative for individuals in our community who are passionate about “helping youth through golf”. The Young Ambassadors Board (YAB) was established in 2017 to raise awareness and programmatic support for the First Tee Miami. The YAB initiative will provide opportunities to enhance your personal and professional growth while impacting the lives of children in our community. YAB members are a diverse group with a shared passion for giving back to the community with their time, talents and financial resources.

The group attracts young professionals, avid golfers and community leaders with an array of social and business networking opportunities. Multiple golf events are held throughout the year and provide an avenue to give back to a charity while ensuring the success of the organization for future generations. With an annual pledge of 600 dollars, young philanthropic leaders are welcome as members of this organization. General members are supported by a leadership committee and an honorary chairman. Our wish is that members advocate for the vital programs provided by the First Tee while fundraising within your spheres of influence.
