PRESIDENT'S REPORT I was fortunate to be elected as the 1991 President of the P & F in that a marvellous group of people were also elected to work on our committee. Graham Passmore was Vice President, Marguerite MorganPotts was Secretary and Michelle O'Brien was the Treasurer. Although some money was raised through the P & F Levy, we ran several other financially successful activities, namely the new secondhand books ales , the Mother's Day raffle, the Mobile Cake Stall in St. John's Square, the Quiz Night and the Family Day Raffle, Burger Stand, and Cake stall. The fundraising committee are to be commended. We held off spending any funds early in the year whilst we investigated the effect of the recession and how the money could be used most effectively. Later we purchased resource materials for both libraries and for any subject teacher who had submitted a request. We bought shelving for the Ellen Street Library and two display cabinets for the College trophies and Memorabilia, which were placed in the foyer of the Administration Building. Two lathes and other tools were purchased from another Catholic College for the Manual Arts department and both Computer Hardware and Software for the Senior and Administration staff to facilitate efficient organisation. We carpeted the Tuckfield St. Campus and some of the rooms at Ellen St. Apart from all these fundraising activities, the committee organised several Busy Bees, the Family Day Mass, a Drug Squad Lecture, an Aids lecture, a talk on the Peer Support Scheme, an evening to put a case for increased Private School Funding, and catering for the Yr 12 Graduation. I would like to thank Br Kelly, who steered me along, Mrs Morgan-Potts who made sure important 'things' never got lost, Mrs O'Brien for her work on the fundraising committee and her professional manner, all our hardworking committee members, and my wife Lynette Evans who was a great support at all times. MrN. Evans President

Mr Nigel Evans, President of the P&F and his wife Lynette.

Everyone took the business of winning seriously.

Initiatives undertaken and seen through included: - lengthy negotiations with the Fremantle City Council and the Police for better control of traffic in Ellen St. Those authorities were alerted to the problem and some positive action resulted. - arranging for a guest speaker from Amnesty International to address a School Assembly and then raising almost $400 from the sale of Amnesty badges. - supporting people in distress through organising a Dollar Day (Flood Relief Appeal) and a minifete on Family Day (Mrican Famine Relief Appeal). HEAD BOY'S FAREWELL SPEECH I am glad I have this opportunity to speak to you all. The first thing I would like to say is that I'm proud to be a graduate of CBC. Besides teaching me to work hard, it has taught me to develop my leadership qualities, to stand up for what I believe in, and to care about and try to understand other people. Looking back over the year, the things that stand out for me, are the pride of winning the rugby Grand Final, the great satisfaction we all felt in seeing Kayne and Kurt make the Australian teams, designing the New Year 12 uniform, which we feel has helped us contribute to the history of CBC, and above all, the spirit of community that exists within our Year 12 group. Brother Kelly has encouraged us to contribute our ideas, and he has personally helped us to make them a reality. We feel that he has always been there for us when we've needed him, and on behalf of the students, I'd like to thank him. We understand he's going to Rome. We would like to wish him every success in his studies, and hope to meet him again in the future. I'd like to thank the staff for their dedication and perseverance, and for guiding us during our school years. I'd like to thank our parents, who have supported us and inspired us, with the confidence we needed to reach this point in time. Our Year 12 group is very special. They have accepted each other for what they are, they have really stood by each other, and I feel that they have always been there for me to turn to. We've seen some good times together and we've seen some sad times together, and I think it's appropriate on this occasion to remember Joe Palermo and Paul Regan, because they, too, ate part of us and our memories.

It's been a privilege to have known our Year 12 group and I wish them every success in their future careers, but more than that I wish them happiness in their lives, and that they may always be faithful to the principles they have learned at CBC. Nicholas Jenkins Head Boy

Front Row: David Moore, Jason Maher, William Blair (President), Gino Premici and Ryan Glamuzina. Second Row: Br Seaman, Jason Judge, Justin Grey, Emidio Ranalli, Justin Rae and Anthony Paratore. McCallum from Year 10 and Steven Andreazza of Year 9, all contributed well to the good work done.

1991 has been a very good year for our CBC Junior Conference of the Society with enthusiasm constantly evident. As a result many helpful initiatives were carried out. Amongst the best of these were the Sunday outings, each term, for the patients of Skye Hospital. The opportunity for a drive to Kings Park or around the river or along the coast was much appreciated. And of course, there were also the afternoon teas with bisucuits and cakes baked by Ryan and Greg! Other initiatives included a Clothing Drive to which there was a good response despite 1991 being a difficult year for many families, and gardening jobs in which we had generous help from some Year 11 students who were not members of the Society. The Cake stall and Christmas Cake raffle on Family Day raised almost $500. Our warm thanks to Mrs M. Miller who again baked and donated a very attractive Christmas Cake. Most of the proceeds went to the African Famine Relief Appeal; we also set aside $40 for a Christmas gift to our friends at Skye. Well-attended weekly meetings were efficiently conducted by our President William Blair, well suppOrted by a most reliable Secretary, Jason Maher. Along with their fellow Year 12 members, Justin Grey, Emidio Ranalli and Justin Rae they set a fine example of generous, enthusiastic involvement . Anthony Paratore gave us quality representation from Year 11 while David Moore, Gino Premici, Jason Judge, Ryan Glamuzina, Greg Davies, Jacob

In 1991 the Drama Students were involved in a number of public performances within the school. On Family Day they displayed their work and talents in the Library. Make¡up and lighting were demon¡ strated. For Br. Kelly's farewell Mass a number of Grade 10 boys performed a reading from Job. A workshop at school was conducted by Nicholas Flanagan, a well known Perth actor. Theatre Arts students and Year 12 boys were involved. As a result the students gained a tremendous insight into the need for concentration, commitment and self control in Theatre. The Theatre Arts students attended a number of professional plays during the year including "Top Silk" and "Twelfth Night". They were also involved in a video exchange with a Brisbane Catholic Girls School. V:jco tapes of performances were exchanged and criticdlly reviewed. This has proven very successful and will continue in 1992. English and Literature classes have also served as willing "live" audiences. At Tuckfield St. in December, a group of Grade 5, 6 and 7 students performed plays for the entire campus. Their performances were memorable and a fitting finale for the year. The school play for 1991 was "Falling Upward" an Irish comedy by Ray Bradbury. It was a tremendous success for the cast who not only enjoyed themselves but were educated in the rigours of putting on a production. In 1992 every student at C.B.C. will have the opportunity of doing Drama. At this stage we have over 300 boys involved, and for the first time, and thanks to the P & F, many students will have access to a Drama textbook. 1992 looks good.

REUNION The tradition of our College was never more evident on the evening of Thursday, 10th October at the South Frernantle Football Club when 600 past students, along with 20 Brothers who formerly taught at Fremantle, celebrated our 90th year. The Brothers were enthusastically received when introduced individually to their former pupils. Brother Pat Kelly gave a brief rundown on several aspects of the school and the School Board. Brian Lawrence spoke on the formation of an Association of Old Boys with a reunion to be held every two years, culminating in the year 2001 with our centenary celebration. A raffle was held during the evening raising $1640 to give us a base on which to plan ahead. Presentations were made to Tom Naylor for his contribution to the CBC Old Boys Football Club over 60 years and likewise to Tom Hegarty for his contribution to the Old Boys Cricket Club over 40 years. Mention must be made of the excellent hot meal enjoyed by all and catered for by Derek Phillips of Lincoln's Diner, Bannister Street, Fremantle. Special thanks to Brother Pat Kelly and Mr Kevin O'Brien, organiser, the school office staff, in particular Mrs Jackie Watton, and the reunion committee and ticket sellers, who all contributed a great deal of their time.

The year 12 workshop was once again held at Woodman's Point. It was organised as a day workshop as students arrived at Woodman's Point each morning and departed at 3.30 pm each afternoon. The programme of the workshop is based on the Beatitudes found in Matthew's Gospel. The format of the workshop involved group discussions, reflection, mediMatt Papaphotis, Rob Selman, Andrew Williams, Alex Morin, tation and prayer, and numerous other Damien Legg and Clinton Micale listen to Father's homily. group activities. These activities were used to carry the message of the Beatitudes into each person's life. Communication and listening skills, being in touch with ones feelings, prayer and meditation skills, handling confrontation, self image and self esteem were part of the content of the workshop. The highlight of the workshop was the Mass, organised by the students themselves. It reflected upon the growth experienced by all members of Year 12 . . Mr Theseira A. Mayhew, J. Day, P. The Australian Senior Surf Lifesaving Championships were held at Scarborough Beach between Thursday 21st and Sunday 24th March, 1991. Teams from Surf Lifesaving Clubs Australia wide were represented in a number of beach and water events during these four days. Clint Micale and Rob Selman from CBC were proud members of the Cottesloe team. Our main event was the 'under 18 beach relay. Through a series of heats we made the final on Sunday 24th and were classed as outsiders against stronger teams from the Eastern States. Much to our own amazement and delight we achieved silver medal status, one of the only 4 medals awarded to W.A. teams. Subsequently a member of the gold medal winning team was disqualified after testing positive for drugs and the Cottesloe team were promoted to Gold Medalists and National Champions. YEAR 11 R.E. WORKSHOP

Mr Robert Isaacs, J.P., shares his experiences as an Aboriginal Growing up in WA and something of his work with aboriginal health, housing and legal services.

Mr Peter Stewart, Chairman of the Catholic Social Justice Commission, addresses an attentive Year 11.

Our R.E. Workshop, held at CBC over four days, provided a new and different experience. Through various activities and sharing sessions, we came to discover more about ourselves and our relationships. The groups for these various activities were purposely arranged to include students not well known to one another. Despite having some initial misgivings about this arrangement we came to appreciate the benefits of coming to know our Year 11 group better. A feature of each day's programme was an address from a guest speaker. Our knowledge and understanding were enhanced through hearing from Mr Peter Stewart of the Catholic Social Justice Commission and from Mr Robert Isaacs who spoke as a representative of our Aboriginal people. A particularly valuable contribution was that of the Catholic Youth Apostolate Team who enthusiastically shared their vision of what it means to be a follower of Jesus in today's society. Each afternoon there were sporting activities that provided a welcome break and, with their emphasis on participation, generated much enthusiasm. Besides the outdoor activities each group also visited the Catherine McAuley Centre to learn, at first hand, something of the Church's response to people in need of help. The Workshop concluded with a well-prepared Mass celebrated by Fr Hannah who emphasised how special and valuable each of us is. This fitted in well with what our Workshop had been offering; better self-esteem as well as appreciation of and concern for others. Overall, we had the chance to profit from a valuable learning experien~e.

YOUTH SPEAKS How would you respond .to the topic Australia in the 21st Century? Would you take a scientific, environmental or humanitarian approach to envisaging life in the year 2000? Gino Premici, a Yr 10 student in 1991, skillfully combined all these aspects to deliver a high scoring speech in the annual Youth Speaks for Australia. Gino spoke with conviction on a cure for A.LD_S., the recycling of waste and the family unit. He hid his nerves well and provided the only male viewpoint amongst the other three female contestants. Indeed, Gino was the first boy in three years to compete in this region of the contest. Judges, who included Helen Cattalini and noted members of Rotary and the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce made special comment on Gino's participation and encouraged other boys to enter the competition. For the impromptu or unprepared section of the competition Gino spoke with originality on Television Violence. Unfortunately strong competition from an older and more experienced student from Santa Maria College had Gino as the runner-up for the night. Gino is to be congratulated for his outstanding efforts. Mrs Finch must also be thanked for her help in preparing Gino for this prestigious contest. It is hoped that other students will follow Gino's fine example and enter this worth while competition.

YEAR 10 CAMP REPORT As students gathered excitedly at the East Street Jetty in Fremantle on the 8th April, 1991, little did we know what to expect at Rottnest. The day seemed to be a good one, and the weather was on our side. The time approached rapidly, as the 'Explorer' slowly docked into theJetty. Luggage and bikes were loaded onto the boat and Mr Owens was as happy as a lark with his new toy, the video camera. We arrived at our destination "Tentland" which wasn't far from the town centre of Rottnest. We all stood gazing at the cabins. This was no ordinary holiday resort. We settled in and our inventory items were checked and our lunches were eaten. Time passed quickly, and our first activity, the Historical Walk was soon over. Night fell, and then we made dinner including Aussie barbie, baked beans, noodles and macaroni. Clean-up was next, then Activity 2. Our trip to the Museum and Garden Golf proved to be enjoyable. Quiz sheets were to be filled out at the Museum whilst we viewed the many exhibits. Mr Owens' camera then showed us how good a toy it was. He had captured many moments and highlights of the day. The Garden Golf was truly an excellent activity. The gardens surrounding the course were astonishing as it must have been the greenest area on Rottnest. The owner runs a desalination programme in one corner of the golf course and it seemed to be proven effective. As we all putted off, Mrs Scalise pulled off a few unbelievable 'holes in one', whilst poor Mr Owens kept on trying. I think he wasn't concentrating because his camera was nowhere to be seen. That night mayhem hit the campsite. Rain and very strong winds ripped through the area leaving the students cold, and some, very wet. The next day, Tuesday the 9th, seemed to have been a disastrous day. Our plans for the trip to the West End were to continue but it was to be in the rain. Only one minor accident occurred when a student, who shall remain nameless, tried to be the next Wayne Gardner. Then thanks to Mr Williams, he was fixed up in no time. When we arrived at the main lighthouse everyone was saturated and Mr Rose'Meyer gave us the option of riding back to Tentland or continuing the trek to the West End. What a mistake! The rain continued all night and the BBQ's were a little difficult to warm up, but one finally set alight. That night our activities were the Mass, which was celebrated by Father Shay, and then our trip to the guns. Again, another soggy story.

' Jacob McCallum: "I told you it was my turn to take the photos". Brett Sanderson and Ryan Murphy look on.

The final day proved to be as bad as Tuesday. Rain had settled in, which meant we had until about 2pm of free time, until we found our boat had been cancelled and wasn't leaving until 4.30pm. When Mr Rose'Meyer broke the news, there was a mad rush to the telephone. As time neared to depart we all boarded the boat and our luggage and bikes were loaded. On behalf of the students we would like to thank, Mr Rose'Meyer who organised everything so well, Mrs Scalise for also helping to organise the camp and the dreaded cabin inspections. We would also like to thank Mr Williams and his very smart wife, Mrs Williams, who decided not to ride to Tentland and who simply adored the quokkas. Also to Mr Owens¡ Spielberg, for all the wonderful footage. Adam Muir, David Moore, Mark Miller and Ben Jobey seem to have produced a smorgasbord.

YEAR 9 CAMP The Year 9 camp (Mon. 8th - Fri. 12th April) this year was held at Forrest Edge, Waroona. On the whole, the camp was a great success apart from some rain which spoiled most of the second day. It was an activities-based camp, and this year all four year 9 classes participated in lots of different activities over four days. Some of the activities that were available were archery, canoeing, water-skiing, boomerang making, a giant flying fox (which at its highest point, was about 25m from the ground), an incentive course, a confidence course, and between these activities we had roller skating and basketball at the centre. A special activity was that two classes, on two separate nights, had to hike out about 12km to a special campsite to spend the night. All they had with them was a backpack with a minimum of food but they managed to survive and they enjoyed the adventure. Before supper on the Tuesday night there was a talent quest. There was everything from Steven Brimblecombe playing the bagpipes to Peter DellaBona with his farm animal noises. This camp was a very successful one due to the hard work and effort put in by many people, and also the Yr 9's. Finally, special thanks must go to the camp co-ordinator, Mr Hewton for putting up with us, Mrs Cooney, for organising the camp - especially for her 'behind the scenes work', and to Miss Fowler, Miss Ivankovich, Mr Purcell, Mr Preshaw, Mr Smith, Miss Finch, Mr Garratt and Mr Rawstron (in his absence) for supervising all our activities, sometimes in very heavy rain.

YEAR 9 SOCIALS On May 17th the year 9's had a social with the year 9's of lona. Dancing started slowly as this was the first real Social we have ever had. The DJ, Cloud Nine, kicked off the night at 7.30pm with some great music. The dancing gradually started and by 8pm the Social was in full swing. Two people who wish to remain anonymous went up on stage and sang in front of everyone. On September the 20th the Year 9's had another Social at Santa Maria College. The night started at 7.30pm with everyone enthusiastic. The theme was a nautical one with appropriate music, dancing and activities. Dancing started much sooner than the earlier social with everyone much more confident. Many prizes were given out and the canteen was great. Mr Purcell seemed to be having just as much fun as the boys, dancing with every lady teacher in sight. Our thanks go to all organizers, supervisors and all other helpers who made the two evenings possible and most enjoyable. Steven Hoban Year 9

He was staying with his grandparents in Australia, and came to CBC to enrich his English. He made many good friends at our school, and learnt many new games. During the third term the Year 8 students had a English Speaking Board Examination, and Nuno went very well, and received a very good pass.

On our traditional Founders Day, the class which Nuno was staying with (8C) had a going away celebration held in his honour. All of Year 8 was sad to see him leave the school. Mr Sta Maria and parents organised a bush walk. After the fresh air, we all ate a hearty breakfast and played around the camp area. Following lunch we went to the Commando course. Mr Austin very kindly supplied some army gear to go with some of our activities. All the boys really enjoyed the Commando course. We had to go through tunnels and other obstacles. When we returned to base we showered and changed into our best clothes for an open air bush Mass. Soon after we had our dinner and went to bed feeling very tired. The next day we packed and left for school. We really enjoyed our Yr 5 camp thanks to Mr Sta Maria and the parents who helped.

BAJPEFUND

Tug-a-War. Oops, not as easy as you think.

Bajpe students demonstrate traditional Indian Dancing. They are from St Joseph's Pre-University College, whom we are assisting to buy a computer. The students at Tuckfield Street campus have been very busy during Semester 2 helping to raise money for a small school at Bajpe near Mangalore in India. The school is run by the Christian Brothers and caters for high school students. The Year 5-8

students at Tuckfield St. have organized money lines and class raffles (year 5s) and after lunch each day have given their.small donations to the Tuckshop to help this school buy a computer. Nearly $400 has been raised in this way, including the profits made by the Year 7 newspaper, which was sold on Family Day. Many thanks to all the people who so generously contributed to the Bajpe Fund. Arrangements are being made to have the money sent to the St. Josephs Pre-University early in 1992. Mrs S. Shirvani

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC MASTER 1991 has certainly been a year of transition for our Music Department. We have been working toward a much more structured system in lower school with the introduction of Advanced Music. The aim is give our students a better lead-up to the Year 11 and 12 TEE course and an accredited non TES music course. This course was developed and submitted by our own CBC Music D~partment and has now appeared in a draft form (with minor alterations) through the S.E.A. We are now looking forward to offering this desperately needed alternative course in 1993. This will, without a shadow of a doubt, boost our student numbers in upper school tremendously. Last year, was also the year of the Junior Band. They have been going out to our feeder schools, enthusiastically advertising our CBC Music Programme. The Junior Choir has come into its own by ably supporting the Junior Band with their performances. This in turn, is now leading to the establishment of a Senior Choir next year at Ellen Street. The Training Band has successfully performed three times towards the end of the year, and our CBC Jazz Orchestra lived up to its reputation with many performances, the highlight of which was the York Jazz Festival. None of this of course would be possible without our very dedicated Music Staff, whom I wish to thank for their hard work throughout the year. At this point, I would like to welcome Mr Valery Niyazov to the staff as our new Piano and Keyboard Teacher. It did not take him long at all to catch on to the spirit and put on a piano recital with his students at Tuckfield Street Campus. Most of you will be aware that we also have a very supportive group of music parents - namely the CBC Music Committee. They engage in various social and fundraising functions throughout the year, like the Music Luncheon, CBC Music Festival at the Fremantle Town Hall and the Musical Interlude, just to mention a few. I think few people realise how much time and effort goes into the organisation of these events. To the President, Mrs Liz Farr and her enthusiastic Committee, goes a sincere thank you from the Music Department. Last but certainly not least, I would have very little to write about, were it not for the support, encouragement and trust from our Principal of 10 years, Br Kelly. I find it difficult to say goodbye to such a good friend and ally. The Music Department wishes him well and may God's Blessings be with him where ever he may go.

1991-A CHAMPION YEAR

The victorious team: Nick Jenkins receiving the trophy after CBC won the Combined School's Championship. minutes. We were able to gain the upper hand to win a great game. The second fifteen was a team made up by many Yr 11 students, with significant numbers of boys playing for the first time. As is often the case with a second team, selection suffered from the difficulty of different players being available from week to week so a lack of consistency was always a problem. Bearing this in mind the boys played with real heart and were never short of effort. As is always the case, it takes a lot of hard work from many people for the season to be a success, and I'd like to thank Paul McCallum, Phil Lindsey, Bob Williams, Miss Bana and Mr McNamee.

What a year for Rugby was the 1991 season! Not only is it World Cup year but CBC fielded two senior teams and won the Combined Schools championship for the second time in three years. The first fifteen were always going to do well regardless of the final outcome of the season because of the exceptional spread of talent we had in the squad. With this in mind we still experienced the vagaries of form reversals, playing two dreadful games against Pad bury (losing 3-0) and Hollywood (losing 8-4). In contrast the game we played against John xxm was probably the best and most complete game of Rugby played by a CBC team. It was a tight hard 15 man game which was even until the last ten

YEAR 12's AND OLD BOYS RUGBY TOUR TO SINGAPORE on V.W.C's players to make our fifteen. However, before our second game we were treated to some spectacular displays of Rugby skills and camaradarie. We rubbed shoulders with famous internationals; had our photographs taken and witnessed a truly remarkable social event where celebrities let their hair down and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and provided entertainment for all at the official Singapore Seven's Wind-up. The highlight of the tour was our final game against St. Patricks played at the Pedang (the main pitch at the Singapore Cricket Club). At this test our supporters included many of the celebrities of the tournament such as the Samoans, the Kenyans, Palmyra (who incidently supported our previous game) and officials from the S.C.C. Again we played hard, attacking rugby. Our conscripts from V.W.C. played a very supportive role and in fact saved quite a few points. St. Patricks played a fast game but lacked the weight and aggression in the mauls. We had a comfortable win but the score did not reflect the closeness of the game. Our thanks go out to all the people who supported us and helped us to achieve a successful tour_ Our special thanks to our parents, Maca, Bob Williams, Peter Jones, Kevin Smith, Palmyra Rugby Club, The Singapore Cricket Club and our opposition without whom our tour would have just been a holiday and not an enjo~able Rugby tour.

Earlier this year, in February, a group of young Rugby Vnion Hopefuls, all CBC Fremantle First Fifteen players of the previous seasons, travelled to Singapore. The boys, M. McCallum, A. Nocciolino, M. Waters, D. Weldon, A. Williams, D. Thompson, M. Hildebrandt, K. Gomes, M. Egan and M. Handyside, had trained long and hard since the end of the season under the whip hand of Paul McCallum (Maca), their coach. Maca put in a Herculanean effort organising fund raising activities, training sessions, meetings, team uniforms and kits and the hardest task of all, organising the boys. The training was intense and was performed in very hot conditions but this prepared us, for the conditions we were to meet in Singapore. Our hosts, The Singapore Cricket Club (S.C.C.), had organised two games for us to be played against The Vnited World Colleges and St. Patricks College. The whistle blew and immediately all our gruelling training sessions paid off. V.W.C. contested valiantly but they had no defence for our hard drilled packs, nor did they have the 'Australian' determination to win. We played a very hard and attacking game in the first half and the heat and humidity took its toll in the second half keeping the score to a respectable level. The game was played in such a spirit that a rapport developed between V.W.C. and our team. This proved very beneficial when we played St. Patricks as they fielded a full fifteen and we drew
