This Annual celebrates the life of Christian Brothers' College Fremantle, during the year 2004 - in this, the College's 123rd year. A quick glance at the contents page reveals the great diversity of educational opportunities that we now provide its boys. These pages also chronicle the wonderful events and achievements that have occurred during the year. We have much to be grateful for; dedicated parents, an experienced and professional staff and fantastic facilities, all of which have enabled us to create the outstanding boy's learning environment that now exists at CBC Fremantle. At a time when we are continually reading in the press about boys failing academically, our results and programmes continue to indicate, that here at CBC Fremantle, all boys can, and do, achieve academically. The good news however, is I believe we can improve further. This year has seen the College adopt a second wave of changes, which are highlighted in the report by our Deputy Headmaster, Mr Frank Norton. These changes are the result of the 2001 College Strategic Plan and will be supplemented by a third wave of changes in 2005. Despite these numerous advances I want to stress our College's continued commitment to remaining an Edmund Rice Character school, with traditional values and boy friendly learning. Central to our College will remain a continued commitment to community and the creation of a balanced

day in which work, prayer, study, family and private recreation time all find their place. Central to our College ethos will also remain a continued special commitment to prayer as an easy and natural part of daily life: Prayer underpins the busy school life and brings a sense of order to it. It gives an awareness of others near and far, known or unknown, important in a modern secular culture that promotes "each for themselves." May I conclude by thanking our editor Miss Claire Blatchford, for the co ordination and production of this annual. I would also like to thank the boys and the young men of the school, for their outstanding achievements and for the many times when they make what we try to do worthwhile. They are the reason I look forward to the 2005 school year, and for that I am grateful.

province leader - br 'kevin ryan n July of this year the Holy Spirit Province of th~ Christian Brothers launched a new Charter for Its schools. The document is called 'The Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition'. This Charter is the key document for the operation of all Christian Brother schools in Australia and has also been launched in the other three Christian Brother Provinces in Australia.

I

I share with you some of the key elements of my speeches to the board members. staff members and Christian Brothers at the various launch ceremonies. 'I acknowledge that all of you will have brought with you different experiences and feelings to this day. Some of you will have come with a sense of energy and excitement as you begin a new term. Some will have come with the experience of a wonderful holiday with family or friends. Others will not be feeling so fired up about returning to work. and some may even be dealing with unexpected disruption to their lives. personally. in a relationship or within their families. As you listen to what I have to say. and as you read the Charter which I am about to proclaim to you, DO NOT set these feelings and experiences aside. Let what I say speak to you as you are, let the Charter speak to you as you are, today, in this moment in time. That is where God is at work in your life. This is a very significant day in the life of any Christian Brother in this room. This occasion, and several more around Australia like this, is a momentous occasion for what is now coming to be known as Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition, which operates in 38 schools around Australia . It is a significant moment of growth in the schools of Holy Spirit Province in South Australia and Western Australia . And it is a special day for your school. There is rightly and understandably a lot of discussion about the future governance of Christian Brother schools in Australia. Some of you have been , some of you are, and some in the future will be involved in discussions and planning about that matter. DO NOT LET THAT MAnER DISTRACT YOU! You have more important things to do! That more important thing to do is to be a very significant part of the living expression of this Charter today, tomorrow and in the months ahead. Today I am joining with all the members of the Province Leadership Team in South and Western Australia, and joining with the three other Christian Brother

Province Leaders in Australia . We are mandating Christian Brother Schools in Australia to express and develop their life and mission in the way that is described in this Charter. There will be one Charter. There will be a great diversity of expression due to local circumstances. Let us ponder that. In Australia there are 38 schools being formally committed to this Charter. In four or five years time this Charter too will be updated. While I am unlikely to be involved with that process I would quite confidently predict that the Charter will express a sharper edge, a more Gospel edge, an even more challenging mission when that process comes to fruition . So let's begin ¡the journey, with this Charter as our space-craft. Let 's fly above the world and look at it through the eyes of our loving, energetic, creative Trinity God, and through the eyes of Edmund. Let's imagine ourselves as the most loving, just, Spirit filled people that you and I can be. Let's imagine ourselves as taken over by this Charter and its energy and spirit. As your leader from now until 2008 I ask you, I challenge, I beg you to let that spark of spirituality grow in you. and I am talking to all of you whether you are Catholic or not, whether you are Christian or not. Let this Charter speak to your attitudes, to your skills, talk to your heart, to your inner self and let yourself be open to the Spirit people, to the Spirit places and to the Spirit events in your life. And let your heart be open to the Spirit of Edmund who can lead you to the Gospel of Love and Justice, to the Gospel of Jesus. It is with great exci~ement that I launch this Charter in this Province and in all your schools. I and all the members of the Province Leadership Team and the Province Formation Team humbly offer to walk beside you in the coming years to explore its implications and implementation .

And ma y the Spirit of Je sus, the man of love and justice, and the spirit of Edmund, live in our hearts. ' I am sure that over the next year or so that your school will share more with you about this Charter. However. if you would like a copy now do not hesitate to contact your school or the Province office of the Christian Brothers in Perth . I thank you for your wonderful support of Catholic education in the Edmund Rice tradition and wish you well for 2005.

deputy headmaster - darren o'neill I

n sitting down to write this report, I was relieved to be able to take some time out in order to reflect on the busy year past. All too often it seems, we can become entrenched in the daily business of school life and miss the opportunities to notice the many exciting things that are happening around us. This year has been very busy, but there is a real sense that our College is moving forward in a positive manner. The grounds and buildings continue to improve, but more importantly, the standards that our boys consistently achieve are now noticeably higher. The College has made a concerted effort to increase the standards expected of our boys. By 'raising the bar' we are challenging the boys to strive for excellence. It is pleasing to see that the vast majority of our boys are meeting such challenges, continually working to improve and getting 'reward for effort' in the process. Recently, in some articles from the UK there has been much debate o n the standards applied to students in various schools. While some schools have increased the expectations p laced on their students, others have allowed certain standards to drop. At CBC Fremantle, we make no apologies in stating that we will continue to raise the standards expected of our boys. In the areas of uniform, grooming and punctuality, the boys are required to maintain high standards. The College feels that these aspects reflect se lf-respect, a sense o f belonging to community and indicate a willingness to apply themselves fully to the College. Similarly, the Student Performance Indicators on all term reports are monitored so as to analyse the attitude, participation, home studies and behaviour of each boy across every subject. Any boy that is identified as being below sta ndard in this regard receives a letter home and is spoken to by Senior Staff at the College. There is a very clear expectation on all boys to apply themselves to their studies and not disrupt the learning of others. In 2005, the standard expected of the boys with regard to their performance and application in class will be increased. We must continue to challenge our young men, expect more of them and then support them in achieving their real potential. I am always impressed by the level of parental support in this regard . It emphasises that by working in partnership, the school and home can create consistent and firm standards, which both challenge and encourage the boys. I.

The College has continued to recognise and affirm positive student behaviour by awarding c ertificates at a Bronze, Silver and Gold level. The Bronze certificates are well received by the boys. Both parents and staff continually comment on the positive effect they have on a boy 's attitude and ongoing application. A number of boys have received Silver and Gold certificates in recognition of their consistent efforts in many areas this year. They set a wonderful example for their peers. Next year, the College is introducing another level of C ollege Awards. This will aim to recognise all dimensions of student life by presenting awards in the areas of Divinity (Religious formation) , Academic, Sport, Culture and Leadership. They will ~e highly prestigious awards, presented by the Colleg~ In recognition of outstanding performance and consistent application in the respective areas of College life. It is important that we continue to recognise and celebrate those students in our school who are striving to achieve excellence. Leadership opportunities for our boys continue to evol.ve. At all year levels boys can nominate to be House Councillors, and throughout the College, the large number of teams,

clubs, bands, etc. all provide leadership opportunities. For boys who may be considering the role of College Prefect, there is a definite requirement to demonstrate qualities of leadership throughout their time at school. The College in continuing to establish a leadership pathway for boys by setting selection criteria, statiog specific roles, outlining clear expectations and providing regular feedback on their performance. The Prefect group for this year have benefited from such a structure, and committed themselves to a Leadership Training Programme in preparation for their important roles. They have already 'raised the bar', setting an excellent example for other students to follow. We look forward to their continued good work throughout next year. The Duke of Edinburgh Award has been a focus for our Year 9 and 10 boys this year. The award requires the boys to complete an expedition, a service component, develop a particular skill and commit to a regular form of recreation . The College believes that these are important elements in the overall development and growth of our young men. Amidst all of the changes and exciting developments in Curriculum and programmes offered at the College, the special spirit of CBC Fremantle remains. At the start of the year, a Father of one of our Year 8 boys rang to thank the College for making his son feel 'genuinely welcome' at our school. At the recent Graduation Ceremony, another Father approached me to thank the College for 'everything' we have done for his son. I believe that both were referring to the special sense of spirit and community that is so evident at CBC Fremantle. It is often seen at special College events where staff. parents and students come together. It was evident; in the reverence of our Opening Mass, at the reflection and celebration of Edmund Rice Day, in the excitement of the Senior Ball, in the warmth of the Mothers Day Mass and morning tea, in the gathering of Son, Fathers and Grandfathers at the Fathers Day breakfast and in the joy, tears and obvious pride displayed at the Graduation Mass and Ceremony. At such events, and in the day to day processes of our school, this sense of spirit is very real and will continue to develop as our College grows. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work of the College staff throughout the year. In the community it is widely recognised that the College has a good system of Pastoral Care. Such a system exists because of the genuine care shown by the staff for the welfare of the boys in all aspects of the College. All staff members are encouraged to communicate regularly with parents in order to discuss the progress of the boys. The Mentor Teachers in particular, provide an important and consistent link between school and home. Their concern for the boys is an integral part of the Pastoral Care system . The Heads of House, other Pastoral Team Members and the Administrative staff work tirelessly in helping the boys. I would like to thank them all for their invaluable contribution and genuine care for our boys. It is these people and their dedication that forms the spirit of CBC Fremantle.

deputy headmaster - frank norton director of studies s I was preparing to write this report, I quickly looked over last year's Annual and noted the myriad of changes implemented in 2003. It is a wonder our staff and students survived the year thol,.Jgh the excellent results that followed the changes in many ways justified the effort they required . Thankfully 2004 has seen the need for fewer changes though it is worth noting a few:

A

• Change to a 26 period week to ensure sport does not compromise the academic day • Employment of a Literacy Support Teacher in Margaret Crommy • Adoption of our Mentoring structure for staff to improve teaching outcomes. • Establishment of the Homework Centre for students • Introduction of Rowing and Chess Club • Introduction of the Prefect System • Introducing the Outdoor Education Option to Year 9's .

demand for places in the College. While our best advertisement is our young men, I do wish to pay a tribute to our staff. Few, or any of them , would have been asked to face the changes they have been asked to face in the last three years; for there have been few facets of College life left unchanged. In spite of this they have continued to give of their best while all the while maintaining the community spirit that is so much part of CBC Fremantle. But hold onto yo.ur hats because 2005 will see further development. The College will have over 600 students, and be at full capacity. The week will change to 27 periods to accommodate the introduction of Health Education and Life Skills in Years 8 to 10 and CEO Religious Education requirements in Upper School. Reporting and Assessment structures in years 8 and 9 will change to accommodate Outcomes '. Ba~ed Edu::ati.on and t~e Impending Introduction

Reading Program will be initiated and a U Boy's Literacy Centre will be commissioned. The Fitness Centre in the Gym will be substantially enlarged and relocated to accommodate a Sports Science Program in Year 9 and Outdoor Education in Year 10. All of the above are a consequence of the College Leadership Team 's review of the latest educational literature on Boys ' Education and the College 's Strategic Plan 2002-2006. These are exciting times.

dey,elopment.,

While many of our structure and procedures have tightened , 2004 has been a year of consolidation. Unquestionably the expectations on our boys has increased and accordingly they have risen to the challenge . One can feel the change in academic climate by simply wandering around the College . The conduct of our young men at occasions such as the Graduation and Awards Night leave us unashamedly proud . In a few short years we have come from a position of falling enrolments to being unable to accommodate an ever increasing

To all the parents who constantly express support and encouragement, my sincerest thanks. We believe we are moving in the right direction but we do it in partnership with you . We feel blessed to have your confidence in the education of your young men and look forward to the challenges ahead. To our wonderful staff, have a great break, you deserve it.

old boys' association

2004 has been a very busy year for the Music Parents' Committee.

his year the Visual and Performing Arts Festival held once again at the Fremantle Town Hall was a huge success. We witnessed the great Art display, the Drama Production featuring students ranging from Years 8 to 10 with the assistance of some of the girls from lona, the Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Combo, the Intermediate Band, the Junior band , the Senior and Junior Guitar Ensembles the Choir and of course all the acts put together by the students themselves. The students had put in a large amount of effort and preparation which was reflected in the quality of the nights entertainment. Of special note was the truly unbelievable piano solo by 2004 graduate and member of the JO, David Calusinski.

T

We had a fundraiser at Moondyne Joes in Beaconsfield and our aim was to raise funds to replenish the bank account after the successful Jazz Orchestra Tour to Adelaide . We received donations of cheese, crackers and wine as well as the venue . We had hoped for a good crowdbut were not prepared for the crowd that appeared . It was standing room only! The atmosphere was electric and as usual the boys played very well to an extremely appreciative audience . The afternoon proved to be very lucrative! I would like to say farewell to our Year 12 students, David Calusinski and Michael Draper who have

been members of the JO for many years, and Karl Bodenstedt and Jason Phillips for their commitment to the College's music program. The devotion and hard work these four students displayed towards the music department is something they should be commended for. I also wish them well in the future and good luck in their future endeavours. I would like to thank Shane Mancuso for all the time and dedication that you have given to the music department. your commitment is very much appreciated by all. Thank you must also go to Mr Sandro Sandri who has given his time freely to drive the boys to and from gigs; without your help we would truly be lost. I would also like to thank Mr Uwe Stengel. It is always great to have you along when the boys play. Thank you for being there to lend a hand, ear or shoulder. Lastly, I would like to thank the Music Parents' Committee for their help and for making this a wonderful year. With out your tireless efforts none of this would have been possible. Each of you have made this a rewarding experience for the boys and their parents. Thank you also to the people that have helped us when we have needed help. With such great support from parents and the College I am sure the Music Department will continue to flourish .

evening Mr McFadden, Sherman, MrTerry Waddell, Mr George Ayers, Special Guests, Staff, Parents and the Graduating Class of 2004. Tonight. we the leaving class of 2004, gather to mark a very significant stage of our lives: a stage where decisions are made, new paths are chosen and new relationships formed. It is a time to forge fresh ambitions and aspire towards new dreams. Tonight signifies a rite of passage from boyhood to manhood. Yet in facing this challenge we are also conscious of the past: the friendships we have made and the people who have been there for us over our years at CBC. Hopefully, as we move on we will take with us some of the friendships we have made in the classroom, on the sports field or just through shared interests. We are also conscious of our parents, whose love and constant support was an ever present reminder of their desire to see us evolve into respectable, well adjusted young men . I'm sure that if you cast your eyes across this group of graduates you will see it has all been worthwhile. Our time at CBC has seen much change. Those of us who entered in Year 8 have seen the addition of the gymnasium, the upgrade of the Bill Hughes Technology Centre, the extensions of the science labs, the addition of the leaver's common room and the upgrades of the cloisters area. All of these improvements have further enhanced our learning experience at CBC Fremantle and all of the students truly appreciate the hard work that has gone into the upgrades. Our time has also been enriched by the amazing and dedicated staff. I would particularly like to thank Mr McFadden, Mr O'Neill and Mr Norton . Together with the contributions of the administration team and our teachers they have all helped us face any difficulties, while their passion and consideration has been an inspiration that has made CBC such a great place to be. As well as being a class that has benefited from the recent building programs we have also been a class that has contributed to the life of the College. This year for the first time ever CBC won the interschool swimming carnival. Along with Mr Norton's hard work, a hand full of Year 12 students made this historical achievement possible. Other Year 12's have been involved in the senior school Jazz Band, in particular Michael Draper and David Calusinski. In this our final year Peter Klauz has represented the state in triathlons as well as cross country. His contribution to the swimming and athletics team has been invaluable. Wayne Balding represented WA in the School Boy's Rugby team and he then went on to make the combined states rugby team. A great effort.

I represented the state In basketball. Greg Beresi has represented WA in cricket and various other prestigious teams. The school senior Football team went through the season undefeated. It is not just these individuals but all of the other boys who have participated in a variety of college events that has made a huge difference. As a group in the past and into the future we will continue to contribute to the life of CBC. It is said that young people are impatient and in many ways that is true. We all go through high school yearning for freedom: freedom from curfews, freedom to go where we want and most importantly freedom to be ourselves. Tonight we take one step towards that goal. One step towards a future that we hope will be full of choices, opportunities and endless possibilities. Yet we understand this step towards independence can also be a step towards loneliness. For tonight we leave behind the safety and security of CBC Fremantle and venture into a brave new world. What we take with us however is the determination to learn from our mistakes and the positive, Christian values we have learned at school. The ancient Greek philosophers reminded us that patriotism is not just about success or about totalling up our gold medals. "We love our country," they said, "not because it is great but because it is ours." Of course, in the future, we will make new friends and achieve fresh goals, but in doing so I hope we will never forget our CBC friends, our teachers and above all the priceless experience of being a student at CBC Fremantle. For as the ancient Greeks reminded us: "we love our school not because it is necessarily great. but because it is more importantly ours." On behalf of the graduating class of 2004 I would like to present the College Chairman of the Board, Mr Terry Waddell with a gift in appreciation of what the College has done for us over the years. Thank you all for your support and comradeship over the years. Finally best of wishes to all of the graduates of 2004 and good luck for the future.

am no expert, but let me remark by way aside how impressed I have been since returning to CBC Fremantle, the energy that all sections of the school - teachers, support staff administrators and parents - show in fostering the educational opportunities CBC offers.

I

Tonight we gather in the Bob Rose' Meyer Gymnasium, but let me take you back to the time when there was no such building and CBC Fremantle consisted of three buildings: the old hall that is now the music department and the two classrooms in the building in the administration centre. That was November 1901, when CBC opened. What a very different school it was back then. It had three teachers and about 29 pupils in the primary school and about the same number in the se<?ondary school. The people who started this school did not have much by way of money, social influence or indeed education. For in those days education was a privilege, as it is today, for many children. According to data released from the United Nations in the year 2000 there were 877 million illiterate adults in the world and over 113 million children not attending school. In developing countries like Africa, Asia and South America over half their population are still illiterate. Even in Australia, according to a recent report quoted by the Federal Minister for education, Dr. Nelson, there are places here where less than 20 percent of the children are able to pass a basic reading test. I mention these statistics to remind us all that education is still a privilege and we, through a pure accident of history are among the world's privileged. The people who started this school understood that and they valued education all the more because of it. They believed that the quality of education was intimately connected with the quality of life. Of course the nature of education has changed since those days, as has the nature of literacy. Author of the book, Future Shock, Alvin Toffler, in a later work, comments on what literacy means in this century. He writes: "The illiterate of the 21 st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn." In other words, our education is not completed when we finish school, TAFE or University, we need to learn and relearn continually through out life. But there is a danger in this, for it is easy to crush the spirit of learning. The artist Pablo Picasso once remarked: "All children are artists. The problem is to remain an artist when you grow up." The point is being, it is so easy in the face of complexity of modern life just to give up: to turn away from learning, to stop developing. How then do we keep that spirit alive? In this regard writer Robert Kegan, an American educationalist and therapist, gives us a glimpse of the answer when he writes: "Who comes into a person 's life may be the single greatest factor of influence of what life becomes." Let me give you give an example of what Kegan means. At around the turn of last century, a teacher at the Paling School for the Blind in Boston , USA, was appointed to help a young, seven year old girl in Tuscaumbia, Alabama. This girl, as a result of an illness she had contracted when she was one and a half years old, lost both her sight and hearing. From that moment she became a disturbed demon, living like an animal, screaming in frustration at the cold, silent and dark world into which she had fallen. The young teacher, Anne Sullivan, first taught her young charge, Helen Keller, how to spell words with her hands, with a type of manual alphabet. But Helen did not understand what the words meant. One day Anne held her hand in some water and spelled W-A-T-E-R for her. It was electric. The feeling became a word. Immediately, Helen bent down and tapped the ground, and Anne spelt E-A-R-T-H. Helen's brain flew; she kept running around and touching all she could. Anne recorded in her diary what the following day was like. She writes: 'Helen got up this morning like a radiant fairy. She flitted from object to object, asking me the name of everything and kissing me for very gladness ... 1thought my heart would burst so full it was of joy.'

This story captures for me the essence of education. It is a journey from ignorance to knowledge, from lethargy to enthusiasm, from fear to love and from darkness to light. It illustrates, education is more than just the assignments we do in maths, science or society and environment. It is the beginning of a journey. It helps us out of the cocoon of self so that we can relate to others. It is a way of being at home in the world . The early Greek philosophers maintained that the goal of education was wisdom, by which they meant it was more than the intelligence we are born with, it is something we acquire. It is intelligence shaped by experience and information softened by understanding. Wisdom, they believed , began in awareness. Helen Keller in her later life wrote about how such awareness can shape our lives. She reflected: " We differ, blind and seeing, from one another - not in our senses, but in the use we make of them ... I have walked with people whose eyes are full of light, but who see nothing in wood , sea or sky, nothing in the city streets nothing in books. What a witless masquerade is this seeing! It were better far to sail forever in the night of b lindness, Than to be thus content with the mere act of seeing. They have the sunset, the morning skies, the purple of the distant hills - yet their souls voyage through this enchanted world with barren stare ." As Helen Keller so well points out, there is a peril in a dullness of being . We gather tonight, in a vastly different school than the one first founded by the Christian brothers and in a vastly different world; but a common tradition links us: the value we place on education and the belief that we need to "learn unlearn and relearn " throughout life: as the for Haitian proverb reminds us: " Beyond mountains there are no mountains."

Reflection by Damian Gill (Year 8) "I did a lot of my service on the weekends so I could manage my other commitments like sport. recreation. fishing and study. I thought that the values that I got from my service were good for me and I helped my family a lot. During my Religious Education lessons I learnt 'Jesus walked through the town and he helped those in need. "'

Nicholas Iannello (Year 8) "It wasn 't hard doing 15 hours of Christian Service. even though I gave up my Saturdays. I still had lots of fun with my family ."

Tyrone Thwaites (Year 8) "I believe that the tasks I have completed have really helped me over the last few months. They have helped me to gain more. trust. respect. responsibility and a greater understanding of the world around me. I hope next year that I can improve in the quality of my tasks and be more involved in community based activities."

we have long been participating changed its name to Oracy. This did not prevent our students in Years 8 and 10 again performing extremely well to gain fifteen Outstanding awards in Year 10 along with another 50 in the Very High category. In Year 8 we gained seven Outstanding awards and a further 48 in the Very High category. We look forward to another year of excellence and participation from our boys in 2005. Mr Tom Rees - Head of Languages and Communications Learning Area

This year we welcomed two exchange students frol'Tlltaly, Marco Fregni and Marco Piolante to the College. Both students came from Bologna and were hosted by the Pallister and Turco families. Another twenty exchange students from Italy attended Prendiville Catholic College at the same time. The group visited CBC Fremantle for afternoon tea and a game of Biffo Ball in the College Gym. The Italian team took on some Year Ten students. (No one kept score but apparently the Italian team won!) High School exchange programs are always very worthwhile for the visitors as well as the host families. It is a great opportunity to share languages, culture and food! On food, the Year 10 Italian class had a few excursions this year including a visit to an Italian restaurant for dinner and to the International Film Festival. These types of activities are a great opportunity for students to further their understanding of a different culture and practise and to improve their language skills. The College hopes to combine with lona Presentation College in 2005 and take a group of Italian students to Italy for an educational tour. Watch out Italy! Mrs Nella McCann - Italian Teacher

We say farewell to Mr Gerry Simpson, Ms Justine Cole and Mr Tony Summers. We will especially miss Mr Simpson and would like to thank him for his excellent teaching in upper school Physics and Chemistry whenever called upon. Thanks also to Mr Sandri, Mr Grose and Mr Mervin for teaching in the Science area this year. Finally, a big thank you to Mrs Geoghegan, Mr Binet, Mr Maroudas and Mr Thompson, for their continued excellent service to the College. Mr Mike Masterton - Head of Science

Year 9 Society & Environment students were involved in two incursions in 2004. In Term Two they were the audience for a play on the importance of Gallipoli and the ANZAC legend as a part of their study of Australian Identity. In Term Three the students were given a demonstration of Indonesian puppeteering as a part of their investigation of Australia's northern neighbour. Additionally, Year 9 students were the first to encounter a new topic at CBC Fremantle on Enterprise and Consumerism in which they were given the skills and understandings vital for young people in today's commercial world .

2004 has been a very busy but rewarding year for the Mathematics department at CBC. Students have been involved in a myriad of activities throughout the year, utilising their mathematics knowledge in both classroom and real life situations. Year 8's have been seen exploring the world of transformations, translations and reflections in the new Cloisters area while the Year 9s used their wisdom of bearings and compass directions to navigate around the school. The extension class of 9's have had many opportunities to broaden their mathematics skills by utilizing and exploring new technological advances in graphics calculators, Excel worksheets and Internet activities. The Year lOs have had a busy year preparing for the upper school studies, but have had some time to enjoy activities based around analyzing, and rebuilding parts of a car engine. As usual, both the TEE mathematics and the CAF students in upper school have had a demanding and hectic year with some very good results being seen. Particular highlights included seeing the Year 1 1 Foundations interpreting their ideas on quadratic functions through dance, and the Maths in Practice students enjoying their studies on navigation in the outdoor environment.

lub 2004 has been a very active year for the library. The Archicad program was added to the already impressive array of programmes available for student use (such as Paint Shop Pro, Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Powerpoint and Office). We purchased Cubase and Reasons which allow budding musicians to record and produce their own demo cd's, and acquired iMovie so students can produce their own videoclips and movies. Considerable thanks must go to Suncica BeslacSeinemeier for the beautiful web pages she has produced for us. The students love them and they show the ever expanding role of the modern library. Students have been most diligent this year at recommending the latest titles, and our books on display in "Hermione's Window" have been snapped up almost as soon as they go in, with several reservations on each. It's the place for students to gather at Monday recess to check out what's new and to get in first. Finally, the Santa Maria/CBC Fremantle Bookclub has been most successful this year, with numbers averaging between twenty and forty students. There have been many book promotions and fun activities when we've met at Santa Maria during the year (a big thanks to Librarian Janine Boyle and the girls for the afternoon teas and great hospitality). We finished the term with a social barbeque at CBC. Another very big thank you goes to Literacy Specialist Margaret Crommy whose innovative contribution has been great fun. Stay tuned for our library innovations next year as we build the Lexile Reading Programme and our new DVD collection! Ms Trevanna Cooper - Head of Library

training in Term 4 of 2003 saw the development of a far more rigourous and dedicated program . The squad were stronger and ready more than ever before! The general consensus was that regardless of the outcome at the ACe 'A' Division Carnival, the season had been a success .

From the outset we seemed to be competitive. We were winning a handful of races and rarely finishing ~ outside fourth position however despite the boys best ..J efforts, our overall position rarely ranked better than ~ sixth . However, under the captaincy of Robbie Guerini, the boys continued to swim well to the last race, with many excellent performances.

James Fannon, Jacob Tobin and Sean Noone set a blistering time of 2:03:48. It was only at the end of the day when the final results were published it was noticed some 75 points given to Santa Maria, who share our lane, should have been allocated to us. In fact the results should have shown that from approximately event 15, we led the competition! Of particular note was our performance in both A and B division relays where we gained some 15 points on our opposition . No doubt this was largely due to the emphasis Karina placed on sound technique and discipline.

the initial disappointment that greeted us with each successive score posting . With all this, this historic win was indeed a great one. The boys should be justifiably proud of their efforts as I am. While we may not always be able to win the big one, this was a season full of positives. I am writing this article a week out from our next training season . Despite needing to get to the pool at 6.30am, at each training swim 1.5 kilometres further than we have in past years and beginning training in Term 4, I am continually being asked by keen swimmers when training is beginning. It is no wonder this squad is performing so well. We are losing some outstanding Year 12 swimmers this year, none better than James Ellis who has won swimmer of the year for the past two years. The challenge on us to repeat this year's championship win is s already expressed by the 2005 squad is any indication we will give it a - Deputy Headmaster and College Swimming Co-ordinator
