Headmaster's AddressMr David McFadden Our Honoured Guest Brother Kevin Ryan, students, parents, staff, and Board members. On behalf of the Christian Brothers' College Fremantle community, I would like to welcome you all. We have gathered here today to celebrate the vitality of life in the journey of Fremantle Christian Brothers' College during the year 2005 - in this the school's 124th year. In this brief address I want to talk about just three themes: about Christian Brothers' College Fremantle as an academic school, as an Edmund Rice school, and as a developing school.
Brothers' College Fremantle as an Academic School I want to reaffirm the commitment of my predecessors to provide at Brothers' College Fremantle a first-class academic education in which students can fulfil their potential. I know that you expect no less for your son. I make no apology, therefore, for talking about public examination results. Despite the wide range of ability that has always been a tradition of CBC Fremantle, the public examination results in 2004 and 2005 show that students of all abilities continue to do well. In the graph concerning Vocational Studies, Tafe entry points are gained by students achieving an A B or C grade, with a maximum of 20 points possible from their 4 best subjects. In this graph, the green bars represent the percentage of CBC Tafe bound students who scored 20 pts then 18, then 16 and so on. The yellow bar is the cumulative score, adding the scores of each green bar - a sort of running total as it is. From this graph we can see that in 2004, over 90% of our vocational students achieved the 50% or more of the Maximum score. The average
score for 2005 was 12.5 points out of the maximum of 20 points. This has increased from 9.2 points some four years ago. In the graph concerning University entrance scores, the first green bar represents the percentage of CBC students who scored a TER in the 90s, the second green bar represents the percentage of CBC students who scored a TER in the 80s, then 70s and so on. The yellow bar is the cumulative score, adding the scores of each green bar. From this graph we can see that in 2004, over 97% of our TEE students achieved a TER of 60 or more. All but two students gained a possible entry into university. In fact over 80% of our TEE students achieved their first preference score. This put us fourth in the state. In the area of University Studies, in the past four years our College has increased the average score of students attempting entry into University from a TER 70.25 to 81 .5. 97% of our students achieved a TER of 60 and above and 86% of our students achieved a TER of 70 and above. These results and other indicators such as the increased number of Merit Awards being presented tonight, reveal the positive academic growth of the College. At a time when we are continually reading in the press about boys failing academically these results I believe indicate that here at CBC Fremantle all boys can and do achieve academically. I do not forget however, that CBC Fremantle is a school with a real breadth in academic ability and many of us who teach here know the challenge and the reward in helping a struggler to understand an obscure or elusive point. A good number of scholars and others who might be
Awards Night 05 described as strugglers have been awarded Bronze certificates for effort in the course of this academic year. It is right that we gather today to celebrate the achievements of all students. May I congratulate the boys here tonight who have helped contribute to this growth and you the parents for your support of this growth. But let me not forget the importance a great teacher in learning. Please join with me in recognising Mr Norton, Mr O'Neill, Mr Tannock and all our teaching staff for their great work in achieving these wonderful results.
CBC Fremantle as an Edmund Rice school Education has today become increasingly narrow in its purpose, driven by examinations, league tables and the demand for qualifications. I have just spent time presenting such data. As a result the spiritual and moral development of the whole person is often unattended aF\d ignored: faith seems to have given way more often than not to moral relativism and rights are spoken of more than duty. An education from CBC Fremantle is not just an academic education . Our aim is to provide a complete education of mind, body and spirit. shaped by the love of Christ and in the tradition of an Edmund Rice School. Edmund Rice lived of course in a different, distant, long gone age. As Edmund Rice believed, the gift of faith and a relationship with God is offered to each one of us every day. We aim at CBC Fremantle to create an environment in which it is possible to respond to this offer. We hope to communicate and share gently a faith that is lively, articulate and critically aware, a faith that is celebrated in our prayer and worship, and most importantly, lived out in our daily lives.

Fremantle Christian Brothers' School - A New Paradigm A University Preparatory Catholic College So how have we fared in 2005? Well if you think our academic results have improved significantly, well the news is that the other dimensions of our Edmund Rice education have, I believe, matched them . Our pastoral care community programmes continue to be recognised by other schools as of best practice and focus upon recognising the positive and supporting those at the margins with justice and compassion. The future looks towards introducing a programme of restorative justice. The establishment of a Staff Professional Development Committee have created a peer-mentoring programme that promotes best practice and reflective practice in our teaching of students. The new appointments of Mr Baldry as Head of Religious Education, Mr Walawski as Head of Justice and Service and Mr Sandri as Head of Ministry have allowed growth of new initiatives and programmes in all three areas. For example the College this yeor restructured its retreat programmes and included for the first time a fourday residential Kairos retreat program, which was made by24 Year 12 students. The students' depth of participation, openness to talk freely, the willingness to pray and talk about their personal journey with God surprised many including themselves. The Kairos programme will be extended next year and be available for up to 50 Year 12 students, whilst all Year 11 students will be involved in a new joint CBC - Santa Maria retreat programme, whilst the year 9 students will be offered a bush retreat for the first time . CBC Fremantle is a deeply traditional school with a long history as a Christian Brothers' School. With the decline of the number of Christian Brothers working in the school it is important that we seek not just to maintain but deepen its Edmund Rice character. This is my central commitment . Last year our College Board signed, together with representatives from all the other Australian Christian Brothers'
schools, the Charter for Edmund Rice Schools. With that signature, we made a commitment to remain true to the ethos of an Edmund Rice education. Over the next two years a new national governance structure will be formed; "Edmund Rice Education Australia ". This will replace the current WA and SA Province structure and ensure future growth of existing and possibly in the future new Edmund Rice schools. Brothers' College Fremantle as a Developing School The past five years have seen vast changes to CBC Fremantle but these have been in the buildings, the programmes on offer and the staff. I am proud to announce that the next five years will see a continuation of this development but in a completely new direction to other Catholic Schools in Western Australia. CBC Fremantle will provide a new paradigm of a Catholic Boys'School.
The College has been given "Pilot Status" by its Trustees to develop as a new model of Catholic school. This change has also been supported by the Catholic Education Office. The new developments are based upon the past two years ' research of best practice and will eventually dominate our education and school structure in the years to come. At the core of this change is the formation of the Catholic Leadership Programme. The aim is not to produce a generation of business CEOs or Artist or Sporting heroes. The drive is based on social justice, to develop a generation of young men who will fill normal working roles and do so in a caring and compassionate manner, looking after those around them and not just themselves. We live in a difficult time of many challenges for our boys. The willingness to step out of fashion is one of the most important and difficult tasks youth face, especially in relation to their contemporaries. So it is with our Catholic Leadership Programme, which will help provide all students with a deep faith and good courage in virtue .

Planning on this future develonn-,,,,r,,,.e about to commence; draft PlanES be made available by mid June 2for community comment. These changes will impact on ho~ school Learning Environment operat!is and is structured. The ICT Plan is Tfi"e first of many changes. The Board has been reviewing proposed plans to build in the near future a Learning Centre to replace the Library and accommodate ICT integration as well as an Arts Performing Area to enable the Hall to be converted to the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel. 2007 will see the first of three new waves of change that will see the College grow and develop more drastically than the previous five years. How the College is structured and operates its buildings and programmes will all see further growth. Whilst change will be difficult let me assure you that our present focus on providing excellence through the traditions and philosophy of an Edmund Rice education will remain. May I close by congratulating each individual student who will receive an award today. This award recognises your performance within a subject or an activity but that is not all. What it really indicates is your willingness to strive for excellence, to build towards your future . Gentlemen I applaud you. Well done.
Chairman's Address Mr Terry Waddell I am pleased to report on the activities of the board for 2005. The Board currently has a good mix of genders, professions and people with and without sons attending the College, enabling broad and informed debate on the many issues we face . This has proven to be most valuable in the decision making process when many interests need to be explored and considered .
mix of the arts. Add to this a population of well over 600 students, plus we are yet to see the inclusion of year seven students in the coming few years and you can see the challenges are many.
During 2005, the School Board accepted the new 2006-2010 strategic plan and passed it to the College Leadership team to begin implementation in 2006. Ttnis ends a process that has continued throughout the past four years and has involved many hours of work and indeed consultation with staff, parents and students as well as our trustees, the Christian Brothers.
The Board was presented with two innovations by tt(E{) College Leadership Team clearly demonstrating a understanding and acceptance of the future College direction. The first was a move to incorporate the current religious education program into an over-arching Catholic Leadership Program. This will be something of a pilot, but has the backing of the Brothers and the Catholic Education Office as well as the board .
Planning of this nature is paramount to the future sustainability of the College and to its Edmund Rice ethos. I would like to single out Mr Michael Bourke (who retires from the Board this year, being the end of his tenure) for his leadership in creating a strategic framework that allowed us to identify, define and move on the appropriate path. I also congratulate Mr David McFadden and his leadership team , Mr Darren O'Neill, Mr Frank Norton, Mr Mark Tannock and Mr Tony Pitos for accepting the task, the many hours of work and dedication to the vision and seeing it through to fruition.
The second innovation to be implemented is a program monitoring on a continuing basis, each student 's performance, behaviourally and as academically. This will allow the students to understand precisely where they are in relation to everyone else and what they need to do about it if they are not. As well as being most valuable for students at the extremes of the scale, I think it gives ongoing recognition to the majority who just get on what they have to do. Both these programs draw on best practice modelling, and aim to deliver real time outcomes.
Obviously with all strategic planning comes some change and we have and will see out share, but I like to see it not so much as change, but more realisation of latent potential. Nonetheless, pressure is once again placed on the facilities of our College site. Planning is well underway for the next building phase with considerable concentration on electronic learning as well as a healthy
Finally, I thank and congratulate everyone who has contributed to making CBC Fremantle the great environment it can be and ihvite you to continue -the journey in some way.

At the time I write this article there is much controversy and debate in some parts of Australia about 'outcomes based education'. There is also strong discussion in some educational circles about the ability of school leavers to read and write properly. Similarly there is debate about what literature (novels, drama, poetry) is read and studied in our primary and secondary schools in Australia and even how students are taught to read and respond to literature. It is good that these matters are being talked about. Perhaps also there is a need in Catholic Education circles to continue a deeper conversation about Catholic Schools and what kind of education is needed in Australia and in our part of the world in 2006 and the years ahead. For over forty years the Catholic Church has often talked about the fact that it needs to 'respond to the signs of the times' . In other words, the Church (and therefore Catholic schools) need to be aware of the context in which it is endeavouring to work. Why does it need to do this? Simply because its 'work' is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ into reality in the world in which we live. Different people will use different parts of the Gospel to illustrate what they believe to be the heart of the Gospel. However, one section that clearly suggests itself is from the Gospel of Luke (4:16-20) when Jesus says of himself: "The spirit of the Lord is on me for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted . He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord " Another key passage of course is the last judgement story in the Gospel of Matthew (25:31-46) which asks us: Did we feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger and visit those in prison? These are Jesus ' criteria for judging whether we have lived a good life, whether we have made the ' Kingdom of God ' a reality in the world around us. If that is the Gospel we need to teach, what is the context in which we work, what is happening in Australia today, what are the 'signs of the times'? The document, 'Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition ', highlights several issues in
which there seems to be polarisation or tension in Australian society at this time. It suggests that there is: • The proclamation of a 'fair go' alongside a rI) inclination to exclude people in need and a growing gap between rich and poor. • A growing sense of environmental degradation alongside a growing consumerism which creates greater degradation. • An explosion of technological advances which has improved the quality of life of some but for others has increased hours of work and/or social isolation. • A wish to rid the world of terrorism while some advocate an increase in aggressive actions against individuals and countries . • An interest and search for spirituality among many young people and yet a decline in a communal religious involvement. With the last point mentioned comes a tendency to 'pick and choose ' what aspects of morality are absorbed or lived . Within Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice tradition we work with creativity and energy to provide the opportunity for our students to develop and live a relationship with God, to learn about the Gospel within the Catholic Church context, and to assist them to 'practise' certain behaviours to express the Gospel in their lives by love and service of others. As we assist the students to learn about God, to have a living relationship with God and to celebrate God's presence among us in the sacraments, we are helping them to have the love, energy and skills to be Jesus Christ present in the world and To To To To
bring the good news to the afflicted, proclaim liberty to the captives, give sight to the blind, help the oppressed go free
In other words we are helping them to be young people who create a more just world - to help the 'Kingdom of God ' or the 'Dream of God' to come true, to become a reality in our world. It is a dream - and I still believe in dreams coming true!

Without question, the most satisfying development in 2005 for me was the tangible increase in academic climate about the College. This was lead by our Year 12 students who showed significant leadership in their approach to their studies. As mentioned at the Awards Night. the increase from 83 to 160 Certificates of Merit is a credit to our boys and a trend I look forward to seeing continue. With over 25% of the student body reaching this milestone, an issue for us now is do we raise the benchmark? I noted with interest in a weekend paper the Minister applauding the state wide improvement in an educational measure that was the result of a lowering of an educational target. Amongst the year long debate on the merits of Outcomes Based Education, the issue of dumbing down the curriculum continues to receive attention. While we see the concern, we believe we are putting measures in place to address this. Examinations will be expanded in 2006, Common Assessment Tasks will continue and a Colours and Honours Award system will be introduced. We plan to welcome our incoming Year 8 students with an examination schedule mid year. Commencing this structure in Year 8, we believe further focuses our boys ' attention, provides tangible goals and accustoms them to a University preparation structure that shows no sign of disappearing. Year 8 and 9 parents will be familiar with the Outcomes Reports sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Feedback has been positive on the information supplied. This report will continue into Year 10 next year and will most likely follow into upper school with the imminent introduction of the Courses of Study. Like all schools, we are currently trying to fulfil the reporting requirements of both the state authority, the Curriculum
Council, and impending Federal demands while keeping true to what we believe constitutes quality information to parents. , 2005 has seen the introduction of the changes flagged in last year's report. As is usual at CBC Fremantle, 2006 will bring further development. The College will continue to strengthen ties with the University of Notre Dame' and develop a university preparation program . The timetable has been changed to allow all Physical Education staff to conduct sport periods for Years 8 to 10 and extend Outdoor Education into Year 11 . Like other schools, the two new Courses of Study, English and Engineering, will be introduced into Year 11 . To all the parents who constantly express support and encouragement. my sincerest thanks. We believe we are moving in the right direction but we do it in partnership with you. To our wonderful staff who continue to give their all in terms of effort and time, the continuing successes of the College are a testament to your dedication. Finally to our young men who make our efforts at the College so worthwhile, have a great holiday, you will need it. In 2006 we will ask more of you in all facets of College life.

As another year passes the opportunity to take time out for reflection is always welcome. It not only allows us to look back over the year gone, but just as importantly, it allows us to look forward to the years ahead. The past few years at CBC Fremantle have been busy and rewarding years. The many and varied changes have been well received and promoted real and significant growth in all aspects of College life. There is a real sense of belonging to a community that is moving forward and planned developments over the next few years suggest that the journey forward is set to continue. Central in any development of the College is the students themselves. As the Director of Students, my role requires me to work closely with the boys and their families on a daily basis. In so doing, I am able to closely monitor the boys and their progress to gauge how they are responding to the increased standards expected of them. It is with a great deal of pride that I can state that the boys continually show their willingness and ability to strive to higher standards in all areas of College life. This is reflected outwardly in higher exams results, continued success in music and sport, a greater participation in extra-curricular activities and service programmes and inwardly in their behaviour, work ethic and self pride. In essence, I believe that the boys are developing a real sense of purpose and a willingness to strive for continual improvement - important qualities for young men to possess. The College believes that the consistent affirmation and praise of students both at home and at school has a beneficial long term effect on their behaviour and progress. The College continues to recognise positive student behaviour in a number of different ways. Regular assemblies, newsletter items, prefect articles, certificates, prizes and the College Awards Evening are some of the ways in which a boys effort and/or achievement can be acknowledged by his peers. Supporting this was a recent analysis of all Year 9 boys in which it was found that the number of Bronze Certificates (positive behaviour) sent home by the College out numbered any Letters of Concern (unacceptable behaviour) sent home by five to one. The introduction of a new College Awards structure next year will further recognise student achievement at a higher level in the areas of leadership, sport, the arts, and academic success. This further emphasises the Colleges commitment to develop, promote and celebrate the many wonderful efforts of our boys. In a society that all too often focuses on negative behaviour and failure, it is important that the College and families continue to praise our young men for the many positive aspects of their behaviour and work. In a recent article by Michael Grose (author of Happy Kids) entitled ' 10 phases of Encouragement ', he refers to the "importance of praise and genuine recognition in raising confident and resilient teenagers (particularly
0' N
boys.)" It is in striving to do their best and in being recognised for such efforts that boys will continue to work hard towards further improvements and subsequent higher levels of achievement. Opportunities leadership have continued to grow throughout the year. As part of our Catholic ethos, and inspired by the Edmund Rice Tradition, the development of young men as leaders who are of service to others is an important aim . Leadership roles such as team/group captains, House councillors and College Prefects are available for boys who consistently display positive behaviour, are regularly involved in College activities, commit to the College Service Program and complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award throughout Year 9 and 10. Such a structure allows boys to develop both the skills and confidence to be a leader amongst their peers . The recently elected College Prefects have benefited from this development and have already been busy in being of service to others and representing the College . They have set some high goals for next year and I look forward with confidence to their continued good work. Among the many new initiatives this year, I was fortunate enough to be on the inaugural Kairos Retreat for year 12 students. This was a four-day intensive retreat programme that allowed boys to closely analyse their own faith journey. It was a real pleasure working with the boys concerned and being part of such a wonderful experience. From both a personal and professional aspect, it was a particular highlight of the year. The opportunity for boys to get involved in such things as the Kairos Retreat, Duke of Edinburgh expedition , music groups and sporting teams is ever expanding, Such involvement, in activities outside of the 'normal classroom ', allows boys to develop important skills and qualities for their future . In closing , I would like to recognise both the boys for their honest and genuine approach, and their parents for the ongoing support of the programmes that exist at our College. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work and care shown by the College staff for the welfare of the boys. In particular, the Mentor Teachers continue to playan important role in the daily lives of the boys and provide an important and real link between the College and the home. The Heads of House, other Pastrol team members and the Administrative staff continue to work hard for the benefit of the boys- their energy, ideas, enthusiasm, and genuine concern for the welfare of each individual student is very special. It is comforting to know that regardless of future changes and new initiatives, such levels of care and commitment will still exist.

2005 has been another great year for the Music Department, after all the years I have been involved with the Music Department I am still amazed at th'e talent at CBC. This year saw a number of awards go to the boys ' both individually and as groups. Moondyne Joes was a success and raised a lot of money which was used to cover the cost of transporting all of our equipment to and from Melbourne as part of the Jazz Orchestra Tour. The Visual and Performing Arts Festival was a successful night which displayed the talent in our Art and Drama Departments along with the many and varied ensembles in the music department. The JO took on a different turn this year as we had vocals, and it was nice to see some boys branching out and trying something different with their musical talents. Once again I thank Shane for the time and effort that he puts into the Music Department. I must thank the Music Committee: what a wonderful team we have been, you should all be very proud. The hours that you dedicate to the Music Department, the fundraising , the organizing of different performances, the support to the boys, Shane and myself, for all this I truly thank you. I w ish the Music Department all the best for 2006 .

President's Report 05
Once again I believe we have had a very good year as the CBC Old Boys' Association. The functions organised this year were all well attended and enjoyed by those who did. We unfortunately had several of our active Old Boys pass away over the year including Mr Peter Casserly, Mr John Cattalini, Mr Darrell Cant and my own brother Fred Ayres. They will be dearly missed. I firmly believe that the teaching staff at CBC Fremantle deserve a big pat on the back for their outstanding results in both academic, sporting and cultural achievements. It is a pleasure to read the papers and feel so proud of the results emanating from CBC Fremantle .. Our Annual Old Boy's Golf Day was held and thoroughly enjoyed by the CBC Staff and several Old Boys who spent a lovely afternoon on the Fremantle Public Golf Course followed by nibbles and drinks. This year the Golf Day will be held on Monday 1 May at 3pm. Get a team together and contact the College to register. We ran two school reunions for those who left the CBC grounds 10 years ago and 25 years ago. The nights were held at the College and included tours of the grounds, which had changed drastically since their school days. The Annual Sundowner which was held on the first Wednesday of November got over a slow start to have a great crowd which spanned over many years of past students. It was great to get some more recent Old Boys' along. Thanks to Mr Frank Williams and his two sons who catered and waited the event. The other very important goal that was set for 2005 was to begin coordinating resources in an effort to collate information for the writing of CBC Fremantle's history. Br Kevin Paull, who successfully wrote and launched the history of CBC Kalgoolie has offered to help do the same for Fremantle. We thank Mr John Katnic for his contributions both written and artefacts. We would love to hear some more memories from Fathers, Grandfathers and even Great Grandfathers of current students. We hope to continue with this project over 2006. Thank you so much to the group of volunteers who are the Old Boys ' Association who work tirelessly to preserve the CBC Fremantle spirit and memories. Thank you to Mr Terry Waddell, Chairman of the Board, for his support and interest in the Old Boys' Association . Finally a big thank you to Mr David McFadden and his dedicated staff for their guidance and education of past, present and future students of CBC Fremantle .

Graduation 05
Five years ago we entered these gates for the first time with the world at our feet. At the time we were fresh faces, clean slates, minds to be moulded, shy and nervous about making friends in a group of 100 other boys. No one yet knew where we would end up in five years' time. And now, here we are, five years later, and definitely no longer clean slates. We've seen some classmates depart, some fresh faces have joined us and we've shared the roller coaster ride that is high school at CBC Fremantle. Looking around at the faces of these boys, there is not one face that doesn't conjure up at least one fond memory of good times we've shared . As I'm sure you'll all agree from looking at some of the photos here tonight, we 're vastly different from the little boys we were in Year Eight. We 've grown into young men, and we've done it together, every day, for five years . Together we 've laughed, fought, learnt, loved, made friends and we lost one friend forever. I would like us all to take a moment to remember Alex McMillan, a young man who brought with him a brightness that today lives on in the hearts of those who remember him. It is somewhat ironic that through such a tragic event, the way in which we relied on each other, after only knowing each other for three terms, brought us closer than ever. Alex, tonight is for you too: you will never be forgotten. Tonight is special in so many ways for all of us. Of course, it is very special for our parents, without whom obviously none of us would be here. As Gary Bolding once said, "At the moment your parents are extremely proud of you. You cannot imagine the sense of relief they are feeling . So now would be the best time to ask them for some money." But on a serious note, to all the mums and dads, on behalf of all the graduating class I would like to thank you for the endless hours you have devoted to ensuring our school life ran as smoothly as possible. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars spent on torn uniforms and petrol to drive us around. In fact, we cannot overestimate the sacrifices made not only by ourselves, but also by our parents, family, teachers, friends and girlfriends that have got us to where we are today. Thank you all very much. Most importantly, tonight is about us as a graduating class, closing a chapter of our lives. But whilst one door closes, another opens and our departure from formal education marks our arrival into the greater world. I use the word 'education ' lightly because our education never truly ends. Whilst we graduate tonight and our schooling has ended, we never truly stop learning . Whilst being at school can be a means of getting to university, tafe or apprenticeships, we have learnt much more than that. There is one passage that always sticks in my mind from the Graduation Mass. "Long after we 've forgotten the marks of our exams, we will remember our friendships. The fun, the quarrels, the laughter, the jokes, we ' ll remember how we helped each other grow as men. " Being at school has educated us, but not just about the subjects we studied . Our education is what survives after all the things we 've tried to remember have been forgotten . In ten years I might not be able to write a perfect essay, but I will remember the way in which Blair Cunningham and Jonah Manganaro look at their reflections in the windows every time they walk past the library just to check that their hair is looking good. I will remember the competitions to see who could get Mr Holtham to put their name on the board the most. I will remember the sayings invented by the
creative genius of Sam Paino, that would become the cool thing to say for the next few weeks. But it is these memories that will be the lessons we learn from, those experiences through which we have grown as people . And the most important exams we ever face will test how we use these experiences once we have left this school. The defining moments in our lives are not overwhelming or advertised events like birthdays or even exams. The real milestones are more subtle. They are the small things, the memories of playing cricket in the common room , the memory of a personal joke that is shared with a friend. It is these lingering experiences that define us, and by which we have learnt and grown. To the teachers, on behalf of all the students, I would like to thank you for your obvious passion and commitment to our education, which as I said extends far beyond that of the curriculum into our personal development as men. It is definitely not the easiest job in the world, and whilst none of us are entirely sure why you chose or how you manage to do this job, we're certainly all glad that you have, because you all do a fantastic job. With the leadership of Mr McFadden, Mr O 'Neill and Mr Norton, the spiritual guidance of Fr Sherman, Ms Cooper and Br Kevin Paull and the expertise of every member of staff, our college can go nowhere but forward and it is no wonder that enrolments are reaching all time highs. To the students, I guess in the words of Ron Burgundy, "I'm just gonna throw something out there and you can take it in or send it right back." I will remember forever the times that we have shared, as I hope you all will. We were always told that we were the "it" year, that we were the year that would make a difference by the time we graduated. It seemed for so long that that time would never arrive, but I guess there are no shortcuts to any place worth going. Now that we've finally arrived, I believe that we more than lived up to expectations, even though we mightn't have yet realised it. We might not be remembered for being the graduating class that defended the swimming championship, or got the highest TEE scores or best apprenticeships, but, hopefully, we'll be remembered for being the graduating class that led the way simply by being there day after day, paving the way so that those that follow may reap the rewards. As was said in tonight 's Mass, "may what we have done in this place be given to many others in our lives" . Metaphorically, we have planted trees under whose shadows we may never sit, but I guess in that lies the greatest glory. Boys, tonight will be the last time some of us will ever see each other. But wherever you go from here, never forget where you came from and what you learnt here. It has been a pleasure to be a part of such a talented and cohesive group of young men, and it has been an absolute honour to know each and every one of you. Good luck in the future, whatever it may hold, and may none of us ever forget graduating from CBC Fremantle. And on this note, thank you for your support tonight and over the last five years. Thank you so much. Good night and God Bless.

arts & music The Arts at CBC Fremantle have had a very rewarding 2005. I would like to begin by thanking my hard working staff, Ms Elena Lalli, Mr Jamie Cant, Mr Cameron Allen and Mr Matt Tehan. I would also like to thank Mrs Emma Tandy who is currently on maternity leave. Emma and her daughter Grace are doing well.
Some highlights for 2005 have been the Jazz Orchestra Tour to Melbourne, the Year 12 Art Exhibition, Year 11 Drama, the Music Camp and lastly the Departments ViPA Festival at the Fremantle Town Hall. In the Music Department our Junior Jazz Band continued this year for our boys new to the music program. The boys were able to be part of a special fund raiser for Bicton Primary School after a mini tornado destroyed the whole school. The newly formed CBC Big Band had a very busy schedule with performances in every term. The boys gained valuable experience playing to a many and varied audience. The CBC Jazz Orchestra as always was kept very busy, performing at various events around the metropolitan area. The boys were involved in the Mandurah Crab Festival, Boys' Gymnastics WA Fundraiser, Catholic Schools' Performing Arts Festival, WA Schools Jazz Festival and performances at the Perth Jazz Society and Jazz Fremantle . They completed a very successful tour of Melbourne
last December. Whilst on tour the boys performed at Federation Square, CBD Nightclub, Melbourne Zoo, Queen Victoria Night Markets and various shopping centres and jam sessions. Our College Choir continues to develop and impress with every outing. The boys involved help celebrate CBC Mass at St Pats and also lead the whole school in special masses for Edmund Rice Day, Year 12 Graduation and the College Awards Evening. Thanks to Mr Duncan Rock who directed the choir this year. Our Junior and Senior Guitar ensembles have been kept busy by their director, Mr Kim Anning. All of the music they perform has been written or arranged by Kim . This gives our guitar ensembles a unique edge to other ensembles in other schools. They have performed for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival and the CBC ViPA Festival. All guitar students are eligible to participate so I encourage them to discuss this with Mr Anning during their lessons. I would like to thank my hard working instrumental staff, Kim Anning, Tim Woolley, Adam Hall, Luciano Trebse, Melissa Skinner, Manoli Vouyoucalos and Rudy Yusof. Your experience, dedication and commitment to the CBC Music Program is invaluable. Lastly, thank you to Mr David McFadden whose enthusiasm and interest in the boys gaining cultural experience in the Arts is valued and greatly appreciated.
Our Drama boys have recently taken part in performances, excursions and workshops and have experienced a wide range of creative opportunities.
"Make it serious ... don't muck around." - Igor Nujic
Our Drama Club students performed their own interpretation of Douglas Adams' 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' as part of Book Week, 2005. I More recently the Drama Club was visited by 'Wordplay Theatre for Young People' who will be holding 'The Young Playmakers ' kNOw nonSENSE Festival' at CBC Fremantle in late November of this year. The Drama Club boys performed their own original, devised performances at this event. The Year 9 Drama students have been exploring the world of children ' stories and storytelling and intend to share their devised performances with local primary students in the n future.
"The team spirit has developed for most of us well, as we get alon well." - Peter Allan
The boys recently attended the 'STEPS Dance Company' production 'Check ... l, 2' , part of the company 'Boys Can Dance ' initiative. This is the second excursion for the Year 9's in 2005. CBC's professional relationship with the WA Academy of Performing Arts at ECU continues with two guest practitioners working with the Year 9 Drama classes during the last two weeks of Term 3. This is the second time that the boys have had the opportunity to work with graduate students from WAAPA in 2005. The Year 11 Drama students completed a very successful One Act Play Season in the Hall which was enjoyed by students, families and staff members. The boys gave highly commendable performances in challenging roles and learned a great deal about the realities of live theatre and the rigorous rehearsal process involved in bringing a production to life.

he Service program started in earnest at the beginning of this year. All students at all year levels had to make a commitment to the service of others and in so doing showed what it was to be really Christian through their trying to promote a more just society. Here at esc I believe the boys have begun to really present a view of Catholic faith which is a really lived reality rather than a mere set of beliefs. From years 8 and 9, the boys were encouraged to serve others in their local and school communities as well as their parishes. The year la, 11 and 12 boys service was directed more toward one organization.
T
The boys of CSC can be very proud of their achievements this year. Examples of the many service projects completed were; the working and caring of the elderly; St Pat's Day Centre; buddies for children inflicted with cerebral palsy; mentoring of students here at esc; Red Cross Soup Patrol; environmental and animal welfare; the construction of toys for children who would go without at Christmas; many street appeals and helping and forming relations with country communities. These by no means exhaust what our boys have done this year, however, they are examples of selflessness and solidarity with the marginalized. What is also important is the realization that the utilization of their own skills and talents are able to be given for service to the wider community The boys have begun their journey from the perspective of charity to that of justice and it is hoped that with this continuance will come the realization and knowledge of the causes of poverty, suffering and powerlessness which called them to be charitable. With your help we can educate our boys towards involvement, partnership and responsibility for society as distinct from mere personal success and in so doing, encourage them to accept uncritically the divisions in our society between rich and poor, black and white, old and young, powerful and powerless through non-critical eyes.

he year 2005 has been an exceptionally busy and somewhat controversial one as English teachers immersed themselves wholeheartedly in the preparation for the introduction of the new Courses of Study, replacing the TEE. Five staff members attended the professional development programme offered by the Curriculum Council which proved invaluable in preparing the new courses.

On the student front we continued to enter competitions and examinations and distinguish ourselves with honours. Both years eight and ten groups participated in the Oracy programme with outstanding results. The extension groups in year eight to ten were highly successful in The Australasian Schools Writing Competition. Two highly talented year students excelled in the creative writing arena; James Jordan won his category of The Tim Winton Award for young writers and Matthew Johns was successful in having his poem published in Primo Lux, a Western Australian poetry anthology for young writers. Another exceptional group of year nine, ten and eleven students continued with the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre programme of youth Literature Days meeting authors and learning writing techniques and they have all expressed a desire to continue with the programme next year. In the LOTE section of our department there have been two wonderful overseas trips to Japan and Italy ever broadening and enriching the experiences of the boys and furthering their cultural links with our brothers in other parts of the world. I would like to personally thank the members of my staff who have worked tirelessly and long with Courses of Study preparation and the myriad other tasks required of them. Without such a dedicated, versatile and talented group of people the Languages and Communications department would be much impoverished. Tom Rees - Head of Languages and Communications

2005 has been a very busy but rewarding year for the Mathematics department at CBC. Students have been involved in a myriad of activities throughout the year, utilising their mathematics knowledge in both classroom and real life situations. Year 8' s have been seen exploring the world of transformations, translations and reflections in the new Cloisters area while the Year 9s used their wisdom of bearings and compass directions to navigate around the school. The extension class of 9's have had many opportunities to broaden their mathematics skills by utilizing and exploring new technological advances in graphics calculators. The 10's have had a busy year preparing for the upper school studies and being involved in IGCSE Examinations . As usual, both the TEE mathematics and the CAF students in upper school have had a demanding and hectic year with some very good results being achieved. Fun Team
The Technology and Enterprise department is moving into a new era, with a growing emphasis on design and materials technology; developing the problem solving and thinking skills of boys; as well as a sound skills base development. In 2006 we will introduce the new Engineering course of study for boys in Year 11 and this is an exciting prospect for the Department. Some work shown here are examples of a design task that Year 9 Technical Graphics Boys have undertaken. They were asked to design an outdoor cooking feature to be used by a prominent Perth home builder in their display homes. Shown here are those designed and 3D modelled by Fionn Breen and Michele Baccala. The Electronics Group werelucky enough to head to Sydney for the National Robocup Championships. the Team, above left. Mr Steve Coggin Head of Technology and Enterprise
