Headmaster's Address Mr David McFadden CBC Fremantle has special reason to celebrate now, at the end of its 125th year of education on this site . And what a wonderful year, 2006 has been, with so many achievements and initiatives in all facets of school life. There is so much to say! In our academic performance, more students than ever are achieving Bronze Awards and Merit certificates in their studies. Under the direction of Mr Frank Norton and the Heads of Department, our year 12 academic results have reached new levels with the school achieving its best results ever in both TAFE and University entry courses.in 2005. All of our students studying for University, achieved a score that gained university entrance with 80% of them gaining entry to their first preference course. This made us third in the state for the second year in succession . Under the direction of Mr Brendan Mc Grath, more students are representing the College in sport than ever before. For the first time in many years we came close to winning both the A division all schools competitions in Athletics and Swimming . The extended day programme has now increased the number of extra curricular activities to over forty different clubs and societies on offer during the year. In the Arts as we have heard tonight music continues to excel under the wonderful guidance of Shane Mancuso. This year however we have begun to also see wonderful new developments in the areas of Visual Arts and Drama . Under the direction of Mr Darren O ' Neill and the Heads of House, the area of student leadership has begun to introduce significant new programmes and opportunities. The year 12- 5 day Kairos retreat programme has begun to see a greater reflective practice in our boys as has the Christian service programmes. Both have still a long way to go before they are fully established at the college however the early signs are encouraging . These developments have lead to an enormous growth in interest at the College. Enquiries for application to the college are now approaching three for every one place available and other schools are increasingly calling on us for information and support. As old boy Brian Cleary would say, these are indeed 'salad days' for the College. Staff At the end of my own commitment to the school, there are acknowledgements I particularly want to make for these and other successes. I speak of grateful acknowledgements owed to many. They are, first, to our staff, teaching , technical, secretarial, estate and domestic; we owe so much to them . It is hardly possible to speak of individuals among the Heads of House, Heads of Departments and teaching staff, because it is the collective high standard and unstinting devotion that has made a difference and will continue to make the difference between CBC Fremantle and others.
I also thank the Old Boys Committee of the school for the warmth and welcome you provided to me over the years. And I would like to especially thank the members of the College Board and the' Provincial Council, led by Mr Terry Waddell and Br Kevin Ryan respectively. In the years ahead of me, I shall miss all their friendships, particularly that of Terry and Br Kevin. In different ways, I can hardly speak highly enough of the support and friendship offered to me by the office staff and particularly the Leadership Team : Mr Frank Norton, Mr Darren O 'Neil, Mr Mark Tannock and Mr Tony Pitos. These men are more than work colleagues, they are friends who have shared a vision and offered me good judgement and commitment. To these four gentlemen in particular, I thank you for the time you have given me, for the people you are and the lives you lead. Headmasters are always said to be lonely figures. This one has been less lonely than most. '
To the Parents: I have often said that schools must work in partnership with parents, and at CBC Fremantle that sense of partnership has always been particularly strong. Not only do we have a shared concern for the well-being and future of your children - something that should be the mark of any good school - but we also have a foundation, a bed-rock of common beliefs and principles, of faith and moral aspirations which bind school, parents, pupils and old boys in a community of interest and support unlike any other school or educational establishment in this land.
To you, our parents, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your support, your interest, your engagement, and, when necessary, your understanding and sympathy thro""ghout my years as Headmaster and for the trust which has undoubtedly grown between us, and the friendship I have so often been offered. Of course there have been some hard and occasionally very difficult issues to address, and the support from parents during these times has time and again been a crucial element in finding satisfactory resolutions. And to the future: Over the past 125 years one of the marks of education at CBC Fremantle, has been our commitment to the development of the whole child , mind, soul and body. The Edmund Rice tradition of educating boys to men will remain as our bed rock, this will not change . However the school which you will see today will change significantly in the forthcoming years in other ways. CBC Fremantle is a school moving forward strongly, with confidence, hope and a real sense of mission. You will see the evidence of progress all around you: In a sweeping programme of refurbishment in the next three years three new buildings programmes are planned to commence: Starting with the refurbishments of the College Hall into a Catholic Leadership Centre including the establishment of our own College Chapel. This will be followed by the construction of a new three story Performing Arts Teaching Centre to accommodate future growth in the Arts and the introduction of year 7 students. Finally a new College Learning centre will be established to accommodate the growth of ICT in all learning areas of the timetable.
These refurbishments will allow for the school to adopt its new direction as a Catholic Leadership School and a University Preparatory College, with greater community links to local church and Universities. The college will offer a specialised Boy's Catholic education quite unique and different to anything yet on offer in Australia. Meaning: But what do all these achievements and future developments actually mean? Whilst achieving excellence in performance and provision is important Let us not be detracted from what is the core of a CBC education. God does not ask us to be successful but to be faithful. It is faithfulness that may lead in the end also to a different kind of success. And so it is with a CBC education that we aim to work c reatively and with energy to provide the opportunity for our students to develop and live a relationship with God, to learn about the Gospel and within the context of the Catholic church, to allow each boy to explore the Gospel in their lives by love and service to others. The Boys: To the young men of CBC Fremantle, Gentlemen may you each know that I applaud you and thank you for your wonderful contribution to the college. I wish you continued growth through challenge in the years ahead and may you always find God in the people you encounter.
Thank You and Goodbye. Mr David McFadden Headmaster
2002-2006
Chairman's report MrTerry Waddell In 1991 I was privileged to hear the wild Laurie Lawrence address a conference I was attending . Amid his customary high powered delivery, full of passion and amazing real life stories, he delivered some pearls of wisdom which he had gained at street level. One such piece of wisdom that has stuck with me is; 'never forget where you came from, never forget what made you good.' You see, currently the College is now enjoying success from numerous view points. While that is wonderful and I am sure from the position of parents , students and teachers, it brings its own rewards, life at this College was not always that way. For this reason , I w ill use this report to not only reflect on the past twelve months, but also the past five years. During the latter part of 2001 , the College was struggling . The major phases of the site development, including the gym, had just been completed and the burden of additional debt was upon us. Academically, we were closer to the bottom quartile of our competitor schools. Enrolments were down in all levels and the waiting lists were thin. Financially we were struggling to make the budget balance and at one stage wrote to the Brothers to advise them of our situation and our plan of action. The turn around has been tremendous, as you have all witnessed . Many people deserve to share in the credit for change, not least of all the Brothers, previous boards and management teams who had the faith to push on and take the risks that needed to be taken. Consequently we now enjoy top quartile academic results; we are achieving success across a whole raft of sporting areas; we have a young and vibrant staff with a very strong and capable leadership team; our enrolments are running at three applicants for each position; financially we are doing very well, still stuggling to make budget, but that's the nature of these things. There is no doubt that our immediate past Headmaster David McFadden played an enormous role in helping the College make this transition. For his efforts we will be eternally grateful. but we must never
become complacent. We must never lay back and wait for the next 'somebody' to come and solve all of our problems. This College is where it is today because of a number of things. First and foremost, hard work and lots of it mixed with a strong dose of commitment and dedication. Second, a clearly articulated vision, strategy and structure developed through consultation and strengthened through e6gagement. Finally a faith in what this campus is all about, what it means to each individual and what its long term capabilities are. I believe it is up to all of us to take heart and strength from the way this College has turned itself into a unique place of learning and development. I bel it is up to all of us to do what we can to continue the good work with faith and courage to ensure its growth. In this way we are able to acknowledge and respect the College 's past, learn and grow stronger from the experience and give the College and all associated with it the ability to be the best it can be. On a fi nal note, I repeat, and will probably do so many more times, my thanks and gratitude to David McFadden for all that he did for the College. We I him every success in all he does and look forward to the day he comes back to see how we have carried on his good work. My thanks also to Sharon Micenko who retires from the board . Sharon has served the College in many capacities over many years. Terry Waddell Chairman of College Board

Since 1878 in South Australia, and 1894 in Western Australia, the Congregation of Christian Brothers has been conducting schools. While the Christian Brothers will still continue to be involved in schools and other community based work throughout Australia and many other places in the world, from October 2007, the Congregation itself will no longer conduct or govern schools. The Congregation will continue to conduct other organizations in these two states and elsewhere in Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, East Timor and The Philippines
believe the life and work of Edmund Rice can continue to be an inspiration for many young men and women throughout Australia, can make a strong contribution to Catholic Education and can help Australia to be a more just, loving and compassionate country.
What will this mean for students, families and staff of our schools? Let me explore this a little.
I write this article as the Year 2006 draws to a close. This article is distributed to Christian Brothers College Adelaide, RostrevorColiege, St Paul's College and Flexible Accreditation Meaningful Education (FAME) in South Australia . It also goes to Christian Brothers Agricultural School Tardun, Catholic Agricultural College Bindoon, Trinity College, Aquinas College, Christian Brothers College Fremantle and Clontarf Aboriginal College in Western Australia. With that in mind, we offer thanks and congratulations to some of our current Principals who are moving on from their roles at the end of the year.
In 1802 a man called Edmund Rice, inspired by the Spirit of God, opened a school in a city called Waterford in Ireland. He wanted to provide education for the Catholic boys of Ireland who were not able to attend other schools in that country. He wished to help those boys 'to be good Catholics and good citizens'. In conducting schools in Western Australia and South Australia, Christian Brothers, inspired by the same Spirit of God and the life and work of Edmund Rice have been attempting to help young women and men to know and love God and to be able to have the skills, knowledge and values to live their lives in service to others in this country and elsewhere. This service was to be expressed in their families, their communities and in their work. For some, they have expressed their lives of service as priests or as members of Religious Congregations in the Catholic Church. Over many years, many people who are not Christian Brothers have also been inspired by the Spirit of God and the life and work of Edmund Rice. Some of those have been students in our schools, families associated with the schools, staff members or leaders in our schools and others have been board members. Working alongside Christian Brothers, they have kept our schools true to the story of Edmund.
Br Pat Cronin leaves Christian Brothers College Adelaide after 12 years of extraordinary and innovative leadership. Mr David McFadden moves from Christian Brothers College Fremantle to lead a school in London, Mr Brad Hall leaves Catholic Agricultural College Bindoon to take up the Principalship of St Joseph's College Albany and Mr Rob Henderson who has been Acting Principal of Trinity College takes up the Principalship of Christian Brothers College Fremantle. They have all done great work in very challenging roles. On behalf of all in the Edmund Rice Schools - I say thank you to each of them!
As well as welcoming Rob Henderson to the leadership of Christian Brothers College Fremantle, we welcome Mr Ivan Banks (formerly Principal of Bunbury Catholic College) to the Principalship of Trinity College and Ms Sue Alderman as Acting Principal of Catholic Agricultural College, Bindoon. We wish them well in their significant The story is now moving on to the next chapter. The . roles of leadership in 2007 and beyond . Frank Norton - Director of Studies The 2005 Report spoke of the tangible change in academic culture within the College. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Year 12 students of 2005, this tangible change was immediately realised through a significant improvement in the median Tertiary Entrance Score (TES) . The average median score improved by 6 points, placing the College in 6th position in relation to all other Catholic schools within the State.
This year also saw the introduction of upper school Courses of Study in English and Engineering. Both courses ran well and while the general education community continues to debate the merits of these latest modifications, our staff are well on top of all changes and are giving our boys the very best opportunities to succeed.
The table demonstrates the wonderful progress made by the College on this measure over the last 5 years. While we all know this is only one of many measures that constitute an excellent school, it is none the less a most significant result and one which the boys, staff and College community can feel justifiably proud .
2007 will see the College begin to implement the Catholic Leadership and University Preparatory Programs. Both programs have enormous promise and I am very much looking forward to working through the refinements and changes that will be required.

As always, the highlight of my year has been watching so many boys fully apply themselves in all aspects of College life and growing as young men. It is always enjoyable being part of their lives.

On 18 November, we again celebrated the academic success of our students. Merit Certificates which are presented to those boys who gain 80% or greater 'Excellent' or 'High' ratings in all their reports for the year, rose from 160 in 2005 to 182 this year. This constitutes over 30% of the student population and now makes 50% appear a realistic aim.

son's progress in relation to the cohort. We will continue to endeavour to deliver quality and relevant information.
2006 saw the introduction of our latest Outcomes Based reports in Terms 2 and 4. School reporting is being influenced heavily by Federal and State demands. Our report provides significantly more information than is mandated so that parents can determine the position of their
I continue to admire the efforts of the College staff continue to give way to much of themselves to this vocation. Finally, to David McFadden, I, like everyone associated with the College in the last five years, have benefited enormously from your leadership, guidance and friendship. No doubt, 2007 will hold new and exciting challenges for you and you family. I wish you the very best and trust and hope our paths will again cross in the future. Mr Frank Norton Deputy Headmaster - Studies
Darren O'Neill 2006 was an extremely busy one for the College. Every year seems to bring with it new educational programmes and initiatives all of which are dictated from some external authority. However, despite all of this, our College has continued to progress forward. Further, it has been successful in determining its own particular areas of growth and further development. Coupled with such positive change has been the continued expectation of boys to maintain standards and to strive for excellence in all they do. While the College understands that each boy is unique, there exists a clear expectation that all boys will strive for excellence, whatever their abilities. It is very pleasing to see the steady improvement of such standards within classes over the past few years. This is particularly evident in the report analysis data from the past few years. The analysis of all the term reports has allowed the College Pastoral team to examine the general work ethic and application of each student. Based on the Student Performance Indicators given for each subject, a percentage score of positive indicators (high or excellent) and a percentage score of negative indicators (inconsistent or needs attention) is calculated for each student. This ongoing report analysis has seen the formation of a comprehensive data base that has proved most useful in motivating the boys to achieve higher standards. An examination of the four year period of this report analysis shows a significant increase in the number of boys performing in a positive way and a corresponding decrease in the number of boys performing in a negative manner. This is shown in the table below which provides a snapshot of the Report Analysis Data for 'Term Two' from 2003 to 2006.
While a trend toward increased standards of application and attitude are pleasing, it is in the results of such positive change that the greatest sense of satisfaction can be gained. As if to prove the adage that "hard work leads to success", the past 12 months I"i'as provided many examples of students achieving excellence as a result of their consistent work and endeavour. In moving forward , the College needs to plan for further improvement in the future . The past twelve months has seen the planning for the future direction of the College. An important part of this planning has been the extensive work done on the creation of a Catholic Leadership Programme. Essentially the College will focus on the formation of young Catholic Leaders. Central to this is the role of the school in addressing the needs of the Church to connect with youth. The drive for Catholic Leadership is based on the social justice rationale to build a better world through
Director of Students young men who will be the agents of change through Christ. The programme itself will look to integrate the key areas of the College Curriculum: Pastoral, and Physical, Religious Academic. It will include a new look religious education course (Catholic Studies) , an expanded Service and Justice component and an expansion of the Life Skills course to include fitness and health issues, a focus on resiliency and some interpersonal and self management skills. Additionally, there will be an expansion of the College Awards structures and increased opportunities on self reflection and prayer. While the planning continues and some implementation will occur gradually over time, the Catholic Leadership Programme promises to offer both a unique and exciting range of educational opportunities for our students. While it is always good to celebrate achievements and ponder the future ahead, it is the effort and care of people within the College Community that is central. At the many College events throughout the year, we are able to witness the wonderful way in which staff, students and parents come together. At all such events, and in the genuine way in which the boys approach their school business, this sense of spirit is very real and must continue to develop further as the College moves into the future. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of the boys and sincerely thank the parents for their ongoing support of the College and what we are striving to achieve. Within education circles, the College has a wonderful . reputation for the level of pastoral care it provides. Such care is generated by the selfless and consistent work of all the Staff at the College . They show a genuine concern for the welfare of the boys in all aspects of College life. Mentor Teachers continue to play an important role in the lives of each boy, offering an ongoing link to families while their sons attend the College. I would also like to thank the Heads of House, other Pastoral Team members and the Office Staff for their continued efforts in assisting the boys. Their work is often behind the scenes but always very sincere and with wonderful effect. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to both acknowledge and thank David McFadden for his fantastic work as the Headmaster of CBC Fremantle for the past five years. I wish David and his wife Anna, all the best of wishes and God's blessings in the future . Mr Darren O'Neill Deputy Headmaster - Students

A summary of budgeted income and expenditure for 2006 is provided herewith from the Business and Administration Manager as information to the CBC Fremantle community. The College budget matches income and expenditure and does not provide for surplus or deficit in the formulation. The structure allows for the broad range of expenditure from fundamental expenses such as utilities and maintenance to the more variable expenses such as Professional Development. Foremost the allocation of expenditure allows for the resource funds necessary for the sound educational, cultural and personal development of our boys. 2006 fee increases have been kept to the minimum recommended level and although some charges may seem high it should be noted that the percentage increase for each is on a low base and CBC fees remain significantly lower than all other metropolitan boys' schools.

Tuition fees have been increased the minimal recommended amount (6%) and overall compulsory year level charges have increased an average of 9% due in the main to the new ICT Plan initiative. This plan provides an exciting phase of technological development at CBC and includes the installation of wireless technology Which, when incorporated with the new student laptop program will avail mobility and flexibility for their use across the curriculum of the College.
The continuation of capital works programmes in the College allowed for a Staff Room upgrade the renovation of the balcony of the Administration Block , the installation of new windows in the Computing labs and various other small projects around the College. Fundamental to all of our efforts at the College is the provision of the optimum opportunities available in the education of our boys by the prudent and efficient use of financial resources and the budgeting process.

Elaine Everett Music Parents' Committee The committee, this year, has seen a changing of the guard. This has meant that the new committee members have met each month with new ideas and their own suggestions on how to tackle events for the year and future years. As always Shane Mancuso has been pivotal with the direction of the committee and his guidance has been essential in the success of the past year. This year has been more challenging for Shane, due to the leaving of many of the senior Jazz Orchestra members at the end of last year and an influx of new, junior members. Shane remained positive and showed much fortitude in dealing with this challenge. This year has seen students performing at various events and venues. The three main events organized by the committee were: The Camp, Moondyne Joe's and the Visual Performing Arts night. All these events were successful in their own rights and funds raised from Moondyne Joe's and the Visual and Performing Arts (ViPAI night will be used appropriately for the up and coming tour in Mt Gambier, in 2007. Many people, both past and present members, are responsible for the success of such events. The first and biggest thank you is extended to Shane Mancuso who presents a stimulating and full on music program. Thank you to all the committee who attended meetings this year and assisted with the organisation of events. Your support for your son's music career here at CBC, is wonderful to see and is essential for the success of the program . We extend our thanks to Gina Thomson, outgoing president from 2005, who has been. a great support throughout this year. Finally, I wish to thank the students who show great dedication and enjoyment for their craft. I know that I enjoy the fruit of their toils. I wish them the best for next year, especially in Mt Gambier and hope that they can continue to benefit from the excellent program that we all strive to provide. Next Year we look forward to the Big Band and Jazz Orchestra touring to Mt Gambier for the "Generations in Jazz Festival". This Festival is sponsored by James Morrison and is attended by schools from over the country. Our bands attending this festival will be the first from Western Australia to attend . This experience will be invaluable and the boys will have memories of their time there for ever. Mrs Elaine Everett President
George Ayres Old Boys' Association When I sit down to write this report I am made aware how quickly time seems to be leaving us in it's wake. The year of 2006 has flown and planning is now well underway for the year of 2007. A very sad note for our Old Boys' Association will be the fact that both Mr David McFadden and Miss Claire Blatchford will be leaving for England next year. Claire has been a tower of strngth A big thank you to both David and Claire, not just from the Old Boys' Committee but from all those members who were lucky enough to get to know them, both will be hard to replace. Once again the teaching staff at the College deserve , enormous recognition for the terrific results they have achieved over the last academic year. Other results such as the sporting and art achievements we heard about are also to be applauded . Keep up the good work. During the year the boys celebrating 10 and 25-year reunions came together to reminisce over a few drinks. Both reunions were well attended, numbers for these events are growing each year, and we look forward to hearing from students from the classes of 1997 and 1982 in regards to their reunions in 2007. I would like to thank Mr Terry Waddell, Chairman of the College Board, for his great interest shown in the Old Boys' Association, as he, like David McFadden, believe that your association plays a vital role within the College Community. With another successful year of graduates leaving the College our Old Boys ' Association is only growing stronger. Welcome Gentlemen. In conclusion, thankyou to the Old Boy's Association members and their wives and families for the enormous contribution over many years in organising reunions, sundowners, memorabilia and funds for the Jim McGowan Bursary that the Association sponsors each year. May 2007 be filled in every way with special love, every joy and happiness, blessing and good health. George Ayres President
James O'Neill College Captain's Address Good evening parents, teachers, family members, Mr. Mc Fadden, distinguished guests and the graduating class of 2006. We gather here tonight to celebrate a most important chapter within our lives: a journey comprised of shared classes, laughs and fond memories. Over the last five years, CBC has developed into a home away from home. The uncertainty that we shared in year 8 has gradually been replaced with a sense of fulfillment in belonging to a unique College which we proudly call our own . As a year group we have gone through great change and just as buildings were renovated and replaced, mates left us and others joined. A combination of tradition and change, a blend that has seen us develop into an extraordinarily close and accepting year group. Over the years a brotherhood was formed , a period of discovery, development and unity - a most significant experience that has adequately prepared us for future dreams and ambitions. Orientation day 2002 witnessed enthusiasm, eagerness, competition and testosterone at its all time peak. I am confident that tonight we are more refined but the feelings of enthusiasm and anticipation remain remarkably similar to our first day together. There is an eagerness to confront the future without letting go of a past, a past that means so much to all of us. We have shared some most memorable, moving and enjoyable experiences throughout the five years . Rivalries and competitions were settled on the hand tennis court, where the stronger did prevail. This year 8 and 9 tradition was to be replaced by football competitions and Cad bury contenders on the oval in years 10 and 11. By year 12 with reducing sleep and a quality canteen that was most conveniently located only meters away, we lounged around sharing stories and music in the luxuries of the common room . Our 5 year journey has involved many different and exciting experiences. The Duke of Edinburgh camp was an unforgettable challenge . We shared stories, jokes and clothes and overcame capsized canoes by tackling the rapids again the very next morning . Geography and music camps provided great memories for those involved and again brought the year group closer together. The Kairos retreat was an extraordinary and touching experience where we shared some very personal things with each other. A time where we learnt more about ourselves and our peers and an opportunity in which we showed great respect and appreciation for one another. The memories and photos that the ball provided showed a great change in maturity and a vast development from those fresh and unshaven yr 8 faces. The combination of experiences reflected great personal and spiritual growth where the boys took enjoyment out of the simple company and presence of one another. The graduating class of 2006 is truly talented with each individual asserting particular strengths and talents resulting in remarkable achievements throughout our time together. Brent Noga, Daniel Symons-Clamp and Carl Harper provided years of musical excellence whilst the consistent academic achievements of Zac , Aaron and Tim were appreciated by all. Jim Walsh and Matty Francis entertained us in the world of art and Cory and Sean provided undisputed humor that went far beyond the stage. Then there are the likes of Jay Bergland and the swim team who showed great c ommitment and dedication matched with a very talented soccer team . Workforc e recognition was gained by many and Barnsy and
Calumnwere in particular recognized for their hard work. The charitable and actions Brendon Sardelic and Cameron Walker motivated and inspired our Christian values. The list goes far beyond this as each and every member of this graduating class made significant and unique contributions to the school and to each other. The decisions and contributions of our parents throughout this time have been so important and we shall always be indebted to you for this. You have showed unconditional love from the many lifts and ironed uniforms to organisational support and advice. This night is a reflection of what your sacrifices have achieved, so on behalf of the graduating class I would like to thank all the parents for the many and varied things you have done for us. Thank you to all the staff for an education that far extended past the many marked essays and formulas taught, an influence that heavily impacted our development into adulthood . You are not just our teachers but you are also our friends. From the leadership and assistance shown by Mr O'Neill and Mr Norton to the spiritual guidance that Father Sherman always provided over the years, your influence has shaped us into the young men we are. Thank you so much for the interest, perseverance and commitment you have shown through educating us and yes Mr Foote, it is finally over, and I assure you we will not be attending Discrete classes nor occupying the common room next year. Mr McFadden joined us in beginning his journey within the College in 2002. His contribution and leadership to the development of our year group and the College itself has been extraordinary. We were fortunate enough to share a very significant stage of lives with our Headmaster and so I would now like to take this opportunity to present Mr McFadden with a gift that the boys are extremely proud of. On behalf of all the graduating class of 2006 we have a leaver's jumper to present to Mr McFadden as a symbol of our journey together. We will leave here tonight and inevitably go our separate ways. Some will travel; others will explore the life of universities or will engage and prosper within trades and apprentiships. Though as we were never divided by such ambitions at school, I have no doubt that friendships and a bond will forever exist between the graduating class of 2006. We have witnessed great change and progression within the school and the future, as we have experienced looks only bright and promising for CBC Fremantle. In many years from now when exams have long been completed it is important that we always remember where we came from, what we did for each other, what we did for our College and in turn what our College did for us. Gentleman, it's been an honor and a privilege, the memories shall be held close to heart and I wish you along with your families all the very best in future ambitions, health and happiness. Good night and God bless.

The purpose of Religious Education is not simply abpit the transition of knowledge but it also explores the implications of the central claims for each individual. This can give an alternative perspective to materialism and help students to gain inner confidence. Religious Education particularly recognises the values of silence, gentleness, compassion, success for others and personal responsibility as well as achievement, success, recognition and reputation . "Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find
a home with you. Teach each other, and advise each other, in all wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs (Colossians 3:16) to God" Our intention in Divinity this year was to raise the students' awareness of the role of religion in their lives. It is aimed at giving the students a sound educational grounding in their faith experience. This was done by giving exams for all year levels every term. This practice has had a marked impact on the way the students have approached the subject this year. It has allowed the staff to deliver a curriculum that is faith filled and full of knowledge that the students will fall back on in life. All of this could not have been possible without the dedicated Divinity staff who has worked very hard to deliver this academic program . A great thankyou goes to Mr Sandri, Mr Tannock, Mrs Tandy, Mrs Quin, Br John Murray Mrs Pritchard, Mr Norton, Mr O 'Neill and Mr Walawski for all of their hard work during the year. A big thank you also goes to the parents of our students. Your role in your child's faith development is vital for their future success as genuine human beings. It can only be with your support that we can continue to offer a faithfilled curriculum that is aimed at the development of the whole student. We look forward to the challenges of next year in the hope that we can offer students a holistic education based on faith. I leave you with these words taken from the Edmund Rice charter. "The vision for Catholic Education is the facilitation of development based on the Christian life, expressed within the Catholic Tradition . Catholic Education is a ministry centred on Christ's vision for humanity, focused on authentic human growth and given expression through principals of faith tradition, quality service and developmental excellence." God Bless Mr Peter Baldry Head of Divinity

Our season started early with an invitation to play in the Wellborn Cup to be played at Subiaco as a curtain raiser to the Western Force. In our first game in early February we were successful over Mandurah Catholic College and went through to the semi finals, where we were narrowly beaten by All Saints College. It was a tremendous experience for our boys playing at a great facility such as Subiaco Oval. The first XV played some good rugby during the season and were ably lead by Captain Jordan Tirli. The Year 1O's also had a great season gaining a spot in the semi finals and narrowly missing out on a place in the grand final. Stand out players were: Caiden Wig ham, whose ability to make the hard yards was always evident; Lewis Sinclair and Nick Short, both very courageous tacklers, backed up by powerhouse running from Ben McKee and Mitch Vickridge. The Year 9's played in the W.A.J.R.U Competition on Saturday mornings during Term 2 and 3, and also participated in the C.S.C Competition after school on Wednesdays, having great success in both competitions and showing improvement in all areas. Stand out players were: big bustling Sam Quinn, hard tackling Cion Noonan and Chris Elms; hard running Dirk Black, Jack Barber and showing great courage Jake Zieglaar. This team will tour Queensland in 2007 and I am sure will represent the College with distinction. The Year 8 side also competed in the W.A.J .R.U competition on Saturday mornings during term 2 and 3, and also played in the C.s.C competition . Stand out players in Year 8 were: the human bulldozer, Big Seb, Stopper-Blockers, Johno and Josh, and the very skillful Gareth Murphy. We are expecting great things from this team. I would like to thank all the parents who supported the teams during the year and my fellow teachers who have put so much time and energy into the Boys and the Rugby program . Miss Tracey and Mr McGrath look forward to an even more successful season in 2007 when we will have 3 teams competing on a Saturday. If there are any boys out there who would like to join rugby we would be more than happy to have you. Mr Don McNamee Head Rugby Coach
or, Mitchell Lewis, Jordan Tirli (C)
boys. The CBC Sport Department and Fremantle Rowing Club work together to train the boys in both fitness and rowing skills. CBC Fremantle boys again enjoyed success during the 2006 Rowing Regatta . Boys from years 9 to 11 competed throughout the season and contested races against their peers in the State Championships in September. Some notable results are as follows : In the Sprint Championship Sub-Junior (16 years old or under) single sculls, lochran Huck was State Champion and Caine Bristow achieved a commendable third . In the Project Oarsome category (School age CBC boys dominated the field and were represented in the State Champion crews who got first, second and third positions. Congratulations to Jake Whiteford , Caine Bristow, lochran Huck, Deaglan Harney, Tim Everett, Glen Hallissey and Jordan Beacroft. In the Sub Junior doubles Huck and Bristow achieved a solid second place and in the mens ' Novice quads old boys Michael lyndon- James, Tom Deluca joined lochran Huck to achieve second place against older and more experienced rowers. A group of CBC boys will represent the school in the Australian National Championships to be held in Victoria in March. They 're undertaking a tough training regime and will be rowing against Australia's best schoolboy rowers. We wish Tim Everett, Jake Whiteford, lachran Huck, Caine Bristow and JeanMichel Lagesse every success. Rowing is open to all boys: it 's a demanding sport requiring fitness and application, but the rewards in terms of sporting achievement and character development are great. sWimming From the moment I commented to our coach Kareena Preston in February that we had had a trouble free run over the last two years, trouble started knocking on the door. 2006 has seen the squad prepare for the Championship in a manner that has made us all proud. Training saw record numbers consistently working hard. Our lead up meets were a great success. Our third in the Championship is a result we should be proud of. ¡ But what a year! We commenced training in October of 2005 and immediately there was a positive workman like approach adopted by all at training. In fact training this year was fantastic. We now have a culture where there is an expectation that the sets we do will test and stretch us, and that we need to approach our swimming in this way to put us in a position to achieve success. As usual our coach Kareena was an inspiration to a ll of us with her encouragement and advice. Our preparation meets were a great success. Time-trials against Hale and Santa Maria saw great resu lts and times. The House Carnival was the most competitive and well conducted event ever. This is in many ways due to the example set by the swimming squad. The Quad meet against Aquinas, Hale and Guildford Grammar established our position in this competition. The boys were very competitive against these strong PSA colleges and finished a credible third. Our final preparation was against All Saint's and Corpus Christi. Again we were very competitive but saw that All Saint's had significantly grown in strength. Again the highlight of our preparation was the dedication of the new Year 8 students. Their numbers along with the Year 9's continue to impress and set us up well for the future. And so to the ACC Championship . During the season we had a number of Year 12's leave the College and a major injury to one of our stars. On the morning of the meet. two more injuries and then during the day a couple of unfortunate events that, while not detracting from the fabulous effort from the boys, put backing up the successes of '04 and '05 beyond us. If none of these factors had occurred we would have won by about 50 points. But it was not to be. 3,d is a good result and one which gives us a clear target for 2007. There were many outstanding efforts on the day. Lex Kuster was the highest point scoring male in the Under 14s at the Championship with 37 points. James Fannon swam well all day having a 1SI , 2nd and a 1sl in a relay. Other individual winners were Jack Collier, David Bremer and Matthew Glaskin. Our Relay teams have always been our strength and although we had 2 DQ's from the remaining 10 events we had 3 x 1SI, 1 x 2nd , 3 X 3,d and 3 x 41h. This is a testimony to the hard work and depth of our team . Possibly the standout swimmer for our team was one of our Captains, Jay Berglund. Jay gained the maximum individual points for our team with 38, plus swam faster in three events than he had swam before. His leadership along with Sean Cully our other captain has been inspirational and Jay rightly is our 2006 Swimmer of the Year. Another highlight of our year was our parent support. Getting your son's to 6.30am training week in and week out, taking them to all our meets and finally always cheering and always encouraging through the highs and lows; this is a vital part of our team . A special mention must go to our coach Kareena Preston. She works wonderfully with the boys, the best in the business. Also thanks must go to Mr McGrath who drove us to meets and did much work behind the scenes. In the end we finished a very creditable third, 8 points behind All Saints and only two points behind John XXIII. Given all that has happened in 2006 and only falling this short of the mark, 2007 holds much promise. We have a very good team and with training starting at 6.30am on Tuesday 71h November, I can hardly wait. . Frank Norton Squad Manager
