Headmaster's Report -
"Give me the boy and I will show you the man" (Jesuit maxim) This year has been exceptionally busy with our boys thoroughly engaged in spiritual, academic , music and sporting programs. The role of parents as the prime educators of their sons cannot be over emphasised. We are fortunate at CBC to have such overwhelming parental support and guidance. As I reflect upon 2008, I am confidenfthat CBC is also playing its part in assisting with the development of our young men. It has been an historic year. We have just concluded the first twelve months of a new governance structure at CBC Fremantle. Edmund Rice Education Australia now has direct responsibility for the operation of CBC and forty other Catholic schools from around the nation. As a new body, attempts are being made to create a greater sense of cohesion amongst all of our schools. The new moves are not without their challenges but it has certainly ushered in an exciting new era for our schools. A sense of history also occurred during May with the journey of the World youth Day Cross & Icon to CBC. To witness our young men proclaiming and acknowledging the Good News of Christ's love was a memorable and faith-filled occasion. It was complemented by a group of our students and teachers venturing to Sydney for the WYD celebrations. There is an old African saying . "It takes a whole village to raise a child " . Similarly, it takes a whole school community to contribute to the development of a CBC young man. The boys, the families, the teaching and the non- teaching staff must all contribute! And in the end, individuals make their own decisions. We stand or fall together. Like an orchestra, a good Catholic education, in its broadest sense, makes music most when all the instruments contribute harmoniously. The boys themselves continue to be thoroughly good company. We expect a lot from our students and they continue to be excellent contributors to all facets of school life. Our young men are our best advertisement as they build upon the character and traditions of the school. We tread a fine line when we educate boys. We are aiming to develop Catholic leaders at a time when the world is crying out for strong leadership. We want our boys to make a difference in society and a sound education is essential to achieve that end . Similarly, we want them to have a sense of fun . "Every boy needs a little madness, otherwise he can't cut the rope to set himself free". A CBC education is also about gauging the time to show a more formal side. We want our boys to be industrious and to continue to create a culture of high academic expectations. In other spheres, our students continue to shine. Our musicians have performed superbly at numerous events. Our drama program continues to evolve and our art students are producing work of the highest quality. In the sporting arenas, we won the 'big 3' this year; the A division ACC swimming, cross country and athletics. We believe it is the first time that any school has won all events and it is a strong endorsement of our students and the quality of the leadership from Mr. McGrath and numerous other teachers. The College 's building program will help to address some obvious physical deficiencies at CBC. Mr. Mancuso, Miss Francis and Ms Newton lead our talented boys in the various creative arts. We look forward to having facilities that are more in keeping with the quality of the work being completed by our boys. Similarly, innovative library facilities proposed by Ms Cooper and new classrooms to accommodate Year 7 students will add to our physical resources. I am tremendously impressed with the capacity of our staff and students to absorb the difficulties associated with a new building program and I thank them for their patience. The word in the community is that good things are happening at CBC! One of our immediate challenges is to try to accommodate excess enrolment applications. Every year, for 120 available places at year seven level, we have over 200 applicants. It is interesting to track our student numbers into the future : STUDENT NUMBER PROJECTIONS Student Numbers (Based on intake in January)

Ideally our campus is suited for approximately seven hundred students but we have planned to cater for increased numbers over the next few years. Our staff is fantastic and has been largely responsible for the significant educatio[1al progress occurring at our school. I am delighted that teachers are soon to be rewarded with higher rates of pay. The previous reluctance of governments to reward and acknowledge good teaching was an absolute disgrace. We must continue to insist that good teaching is recognised and endorsed in all aspects of Australian society. The orchestra will only play in harmony if there are quality conductors calling the tune! Parents, encourage your sons to become teachers; there is always room at CBC for good Old Boys and it is a noble profession. At the end of each year it is always sad to farewell members of staff as they move onto other challenges. I would like to especially acknowledge two members of staff. Mr Norton's strong sense of faith and his passion for CBC is extraordinary. Much of the College's improved academic record (and our swimming successes) is due to his expertise. Our systems of tracking and monitoring boys are far superior to what I have seen in other schools. I congratulate Mr Norton and wish him well at Aquinas College. In addition, I thank and congratulate Mr Sandro Sandri on the wonderful recognition of thirty years of service to Catholic Education. Mr Sandri is a man of great integrity who provides outstanding witness to his faith and is thoroughly dedicated to our students. Please wish Mr Sandri well as he commences a period of twelve months leave. During the year, the College worked through a process of School Renewal. I found it particularly rewarding given it is my second year at CBC. What came out of the process was a heightened commitment to all aspects of a CBC education. We are keen to promote links to the tertiary sector through an alignment with universities such as Notre Dame; we are keen to provide increased vocational opportunities for boys seeking more immediate access to the workforce and we are keen to fine-tune our teaching and learning processes across all year levels and all subjects. Congratulations and thank you to our parent bodies this year. The School Board, led by Mr Murray Alessandrini, continues to provide sound governance, and our newly instituted Parent Council is providing an excellent mechanism for parental engagement through the enthusiastic leadership of Mr Rob Leicester. Our Music Parents are also to be commended on organizing a car raffle and a superb Parent Ball. We are keen to have the Ball as an annual event. I encourage parents to seek opportunities to become fully engaged with their children's schooling. The words of the world's most powerful man ring true: "There is no substitute for a parent who will make sure that their children are in school on time and help them with their homework after dinner and attend parent teacher conferences, like so many parents do" (Barack Obama 4 June 2008) The fact that so many parents are present here tonight is an indication of the great interest that you have in your sons' schooling . The role of parent is more important that any other role that we undertake in life. It is always a challenge to give our children the time that they deserve. An interesting perspective is provided by Steve Biddulph: "What children get from a career father is not happiness, nor his teaching , nor his substance, but only his mood. And at 7 o'clock at night that mood is often irritable and fatigued. Men show their love by working hard and long. They do not get appreciated for it - since it is their presence not their bounty that is hungered for by their children." Finally, I would like to especially thank all students for their contributions to CBC Fremantle. It is my pleasure to work with you all and I congratulate all the young men being recognised this evening. I look forward to journeying in the tradition of Edmund Rice and hopefully plenty of Dockers premierships in the years to come! Mr Robert Henderson Headmaster

Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that I contribute this piece to your College annual on behalf of the whole Edmund Rice Education family throughout Australia. Edmund Rice Education Australia has only been in existence for just over twelve months. However your College has a long and proud tradition of excellence in Catholic education and the formation of young men) . To be an excellent Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, this College is challenged to make the Christian Gospel visible and active not only in mission statements, policies and RE classes, but in all aspects of school life and culture. To achieve this, your College struggles with important questions like: What is celebrated in this school? What is not celebrated? How are resources spent? Which voices are listened to? Who is welcomed? Who is excluded? How are we defining success for our students? How is injustice challenged in this school? How are the less able, the less articulate, and the less presentable cared for? Much has been achieved this year in the life of your College and we can be justifiably proud of our progress in so many areas. But let us be careful not to measure the excellence of our school only by its facilities , reputation or academic results. What really matters is you, the community of this College, your hearts, God's grace giving you truth and life, and this being given as gift to the world! Students leaving this College must clearly know that the road to happiness lies not through the continual promotion of our own self interest but through living a life of service for others. As the poet Yeats once said: "Education is n9t filling a bucket but lighting a fire." Surely this fire should translate into a passion for life, meaning and purpose! Parents sacrifice much to send their children to Catholic schools. I believe we do this because we want our children to receive an 'education' , not merely attain a 'qualification'. Our kids will be only half educated unless they have acquired a sense of human dignity and worth, an appreciation of their full potential, and the determination to leave the world a better place for their having been in it. I congratulate you all on your efforts to live up to these ideals. The future of our Church and our world depend on your continued commitment and faithfulness. I ask God to bless this College community in its efforts to be 'excellent' in the fullest sense of the word . With every best wish, Dr Wayne Tinsey Executive Director

College Board Review 2008 Anyone who has been involved in education for any length of time will tell you that there is no such thing as an 'ordinary' school year. Each year brings unique challenges for staff, students, parents and the wider College community. For the CBC Fremantle College Board, 2008 was no exception:¡ As many of you would know, in October 2007, the Christian Brothers passed on responsibility for CBC Fremantle and their other forty-one Australian schools to Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA). While the core values of the Christian Brothers are well established and will continue to flourish under the new EREA governance structure, we are aware that the change process is far from complete and that a great deal of work will be required over the next few years before we see the final benefits of this new relationship. The Board will continue to work with EREA to ensure that CBC Fremantle becomes an integral part of the new national structure. (If you would like to know more about EREA please visit the following site http://www.erea.edu.au) When looking at the highlights of 2008 it is hard to go past two particularly exciting developments. The most obvious physical change to the College has been the commencement of a new stage of building and refurbishment. The construction of a new multi-million dollar teaching block is now well underway and is expected to be completed in early 2009. Once completed it will provide the College with 'state of the art' teaching and performance areas. This, together with the refurbishment of the existing White Building and the relocation of the library, will further modernise the College and greatly assist in providing outstanding new facilities for our staff and students. I would like to thank all stakeholders who have assisted in bringing this project to fruition, in particular the Catholic Education Office (CEO) for their crucial support of this work. Furthermore, we should not forget that our ability to undertake this project has been greatly assisted by the College's current sound financial position, which is due in large part to the work of the College Business Manager, Mr. Tony Pitos, and the Board 's Finance sub-committee, headed by Mr. Vince Turco . From my perspective, the other major achievement for 2008 has been the increase in parental involvement in the College community. Through the work of the Board's 'Marketing and Community Relationships' subcommittee, we are now seeing a greater degree of engagement by parents in the broader 'non academic' activities of College life. In particular, I would like to thank Kathy Sinclair, Rob Leicester and Fiona Williams for their outstanding efforts in this area .
,.
As mentioned at the beginning of this review, there are no 'ordinary' years in schools and this will certainly be the ,case in 2009. For the first time in CBC's recent history, we will have Year 7 students on site next year. This will be the culmination of a great deal of preparation by the Board, the CEO and the staff of CBC. As with any major change, the enrolment of an additional cohort of students w ill bring with it many challenges for the College. While the impact of this change will be tempered by the fact that only half of the full four stream Year 7 enrolments will come on board in 2009 (full enrolments will start in 2010) , I'm sure that our College Headmaster and his staff are well prepared to maximise the opportunities that present themselves when such challenges occur. I would like to pass on the Board 's strong support of their work during this exciting time. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the running of the College Board during 2008 - unfortunately there are too many names to mention here. It is a great privilege to be a part of the CBC Board and to develop a deeper understanding of the College, its history and its future. I would especially like to acknowledging the efforts of Mr Rob Henderson and Mr Tony Pitos in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the Board throughout this year. Finally, on behalf of the Board , I would like to acknowledge the work of our entire College staff (teaching and administration) - our sons are fortunate to have such wonderful support as they develop into outstanding men that in the future will proudly represent the College as CBC graduates and 'Old Boys'.
Mr Murray Alessandrini Chairman CBC Fremantle Board

By their very nature, all schools develop a certain rhythm in their operations. am referring to the cyclical nature of particular classes following on from other classes, weeks merging into terms, the annual celebration of College events and the process of a graduating class exiting out the gates as a new group of students anxiously prepare to enter. There is little doubt that the rhythm of school life at CBC Fremantle has become appreciably quicker over the years. New educational outcomes, government initiatives and innovative ideas all add to the demands on everyone within our College community. Importantly though, CBC Fremantle h~s adjusted well to this increased pace. Our school continues to progress in a positive manner while maintaining the wonderful aspect of being a caring community. Much credit must go to our boys for the way they continually rise to meet the challenges put before them. This year has seen yet another increase in the number of boys receiving 'Bronze Certificates' in recognition of their positive contributions to College life. Within the wider community, the boys are consistently praised for their ongoing and meaningful work with a variety of service agencies. In the area of the Arts, the boys continually perform at an outstanding level with their music. The recent Visual Art Exhibition showcased amazing works and Drama performances continue to go from strength to strength. Academic results continue to improve and this year, history was created when the College won the treble in the A Division Carnivals for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics, capping off an exceptional year in the area of Sport. While it is important to celebrate all such achievements, it is equally important to recognise that such performances are reached only through consistent effort and application. The College has high expectations of our boys to maintain established standards and to strive to achieve excellence in all they do. While recognising that every boy is unique, the expectation remains on every boy to apply himself in all classes, whatever his abilities. It is very pleasing to see the steady improvement of such standards within classes over the past few years. The ongoing analysis of all the term reports has allowed the College Pastoral Team to examine the general work ethic and application of each student. Based on the Student Performance Indicators given for each subject, a percentage score of positive indicators ('high" or "excellent") and a percentage score of negative indicators ("inconsistent" or "needs attention") is calculated for each student. This student report analysis has seen the formation of a comprehensive data base that has proved most useful in motivating the boys to achieve higher standards. An examination of the five year period of this report analysis shows a significant increase in the number of boys performing in a 'positive manner' and a decrease in the number of boys performing in a 'negative manner'. This is shown in the table below which provides a snapshot of the Report Analysis Data for Term Two from 2004 to 2008.

Leadership opportunities for our boys continue to evolve. At all Year levels boys can nominate to be House Councillors, and throughout the College the large number of teams, clubs, bands, etc. all provide opportunities for leadership. The College has established a leadership pathway for boys by setting selection criteria, stating specific roles, outlining clear expectations and providing regular feedback on their performance. For boys who may be considering the role of College Prefect, there is a definite requirement to demonstrate qualities of leadership throughout their time at school and complete their Duke of Edinburgh requirements for the Bronze level. The 2009 Prefect group has benefited from such a structure, and committed themselves to a Leadership Training Program in preparation for their important leadership roles . They have made an impressive start, demonstrating that with leadership comes responsibility and a need to be of service to others. They are setting an excellent example for other students to follow. We look forward to their continued good work throughout next year.

Significant changes are planned for next year as we welcome our first group of Year 7 students into our Secondary College. Exciting programs are planned for their development and we anticipate that they will enjoy the diverse range of opportunities that will be available for them as they journey through our school. Our new building phase will be completed next year and this will include an area for performing arts and music practice rooms, a newly designed library ('Ideas Shop') and new classrooms. A refurbishment of existing rooms will also be completed to accommodate our Year 7 boys. The Catholic Leadership Program will be expanded across all Year levels with a focus on areas of Catholic manhood , life-skills, resiliency, leadership, organisation, study and health . This will be a developmental program across the College, directed by all of the staff. As our College progresses, new curriculum programs will be introduced and opportunities for student involvement in various teams and groups will continue to expand. However, it is vital that the partnership of family, school and student remains as central in all such endeavours. I am always impressed by the level of parent and student support for the College. At the start of the year, a mother of one of our Year 8 boys rang to thank the College for making her son feel 'so genuinely welcome' at our school. Again , at the recent Graduation Ceremony, a justifiably proud father approached me to thank the College for 'everything' we had done for his son. I believe that both were referring to the special sense of spirit and community that is so evident at CBC Fremantle. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of the boys and sincerely thank the parents for their ongoing support of the College and for what we are striving to achieve. The College has a wonderful reputation for the level of Pastoral Care it provides . Such care is generated by the selfless and consistent work of all the Staff at the College . They show a genuine concern for the welfare of the boys in all aspects of College life. The Mentor Teachers continue to play an important role in the lives of each boy, offering an ongoing link to families while their sons attend the College. I would also like to thank the Heads of House, other Pastoral Team members and the Office Staff for their continued efforts in assisting the boys. Their work is often behind the scenes but always very sincere and with wonderful effect. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic work of Frank Norton for the past seven years. As a Deputy Headmaster of CBC Fremantle, he has provided wonderful vision and played a vital role in directing the growth of our College in recent years. His work ethic is outstanding and he is a great model for our young men. On a personal note, I have enjoyed his humour, professionalism and most importantly his friendship. I wish Frank all the best of wishes and God's blessings in the next phase of his career. Mr Darren O'Neill Deputy Headmaster (Director of Students)

2008 has seen the curriculum initiatives of the past few years continue to bear fruit and significant work undertaken in developing the major new programs for 2009. The first of these programs is the roll out of the Catholic Leadership Program throughout Years 7 to 12 and the second is the arrival of our first classes of Year 7 students at CBC. The first steps towards the implementation of the Catholic Leadership Program commenced with the Year 11 and 12 students. A broad range of topics are covered, all focused on developing our young men to be inspirational leaders and contributors to society. 2009 will see the school timetable alter to place a clear focus on this program for all Years, 7 to 12. 165 Year 7 and 8 students will begin at the College in 2009. This represents the largest-ever intake of students in the College's history and significant planning and preparation have bee'n undertaken to ensure each and every boy feels welcome and part of the College community. Significant curriculum and staffing development has been completed to take advantage of the opportunities to engage Year 7 students in the life of the College. The Year 7 program integrates what we believe are the best of both primary and secondary education including the provision of key teachers in numeracy and literacy and a home base classroom, while taking advantage of the specialist staff and facilities the College can provide. I'm sure the boys will greatly enjoy their time at CBC Fremantle. The 2007 Year 12 students again performed well on both University bound and Vocationally bound indicators. The percentage of students undertaking University bound studies rose from a consistent 50% to 55% in recent years to 69% in 2007. Presumably this is the result of an increased availability of University positions and the lowering of entry requirements - consequences of the State's economic position and the significant decrease in mature aged students undertaking study. Not surprisingly, the College's TER dropped slightly as significantly more students availed themselves of university positions. The College still finished within the top 30% of schools within the State, and as in 2006, 16 boys achieved a TER in excess of 90. Sean Perer received a Certificate of Excellence for at least ten As in Years 11 and 12, and Domenic Chiellini and Ryan Frost received Certificates of Distinction for being in the top 0.5% of students in Senior Science. Additionally our Vocational results placed the College within the top 7% of schools within the State. The boys can be justifiably proud of their results. The College Awards Night held on the 15th ' November celebrated the continuing outstanding achievements of the young men of the College. Close to 40% of students received either or both a Certificate of Merit or First in Subject Award. Given the difficulty in achieving these awards with only one boy receiving a First in Subject and the need to achieve 80% or greater Excellent or High ratings in all their reports for the year to gain a Certificate of Merit, this is a fabulous result. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful students, staff and parents who have made my seven years at the College so rewarding . It has been a privilege to work at the College and I am sure you would agree that the progress we have made together has been beyond all expectations. While I look forward to the challenges my new position will bring, I realise I am leaving an outstanding College that will only continue to go from strength to strength in the coming years. Again, many thanks. Mr Frank Norton Deputy Headmaster (Director of Studies)

Budget formulation forms the template for CBC Fremantle's financial and educational activities during the academic year. Budgeted income and expenditure for 2008 is provided herewith from the Business and Administration Manager as information to the CBC Fremantle community. The budget is developed as a model with no surplus or deficit in its construction identifying anticipated receipts via the billing process and applying these funds to expenditure necessary to the overall operational expenditure required to maintain and develop the College campus. Expenditure ranges from operational expenses fundamental to the physical operations of the College such as power and other utilities; and buildings, grounds and other maintenance; to the academic expenses for staff and student development including Professional Development, keeping staff well informed on current educational requirements and developments. Teacher salaries constitute the largest single item of expenditure in the College. CBC FREMANTLE 2008 BUDGET RECURRENT Educational capacity within the College relates to the ability to purchase goods and services and thus there is a heavy reliance on the receipt of tuition fees to allow sound sustainable educational, cultural and personal development for our boys. Tuition Fees and subject levies have been increased the minimal recommended amount 7% for 2008. Levies such as the ICT Levy and the Building Levy remain unc, hanged with CBC fees and charges significantly lower than any other boys' school in the metropolitan area.
EXPENDITURE $7.07 MILLON RECURRENT DEBT SERVICING 1%
OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE 29%
SALARIES & WAGES 70%
CBC¡ FREMANTLE 2008 BUDGET RECURRENT INCOME $7.2 MILLION
2008/2009 sees a new Facilities and dynamic phase of Fees 3% development of the physical site with construction of four 31 % new classrooms and an Arts Learning Area togetherwith the relocation and refurbishment of the Library and four classrooms. These developments will not only enhance the existing educational capacity of the College but also provide rooms for Year Seven students on campus in 2009.
Grants 66%
Thus CBC Fremantle continues to grow not only in the physical sense but also in its educational capacities by effective and careful optimal use of available funds and monitoring actual spending comparative to the template provided via the budget. Mr Tony Pitos Business & Administration Manager

It has been-a b usy but rewardi ng firstyear for the Parent Council a~d I than k the CBC community for the very warm and positive way that the Parent Council has been accepted and supported . The Parent Council was formed early this year by our Headmaster, Rob Henderson, to provide a forum to facilitate parent participation in the College. It was certainly evident to me that in recent years there had been limited opportunities for many parents to be engaged with their sons ' schooling at CBC and I congratulate Rob on taking the initiative to establish the Parent Council. In general, the Parent Council aims to: • offer advice and provide feedback to Rob and his Leadership Team when requested; • organise socia l and other functions; and • foster school community development. The four objectives of the Parent Council are: • Consultative • Educational • Social • Fundraising A copy of the Guidelines for the Parent Council can be found on the Parent Council page of the College website. The early meetings of the Parent Council focused on "setting ground rules ", getting to know each other, understanding the Guidelines and engaging in discussions about possible actions to progress our Objectives. Some of the Parent Council actions during the year include: • Establishing Parent Council information on the College website. • Establishing Year group co-coordinators for Years 8, 9 and 10 and successfully hosting Year group moming teas . • Helping with the Fathers ' Day breakfast. • Helping with the Mothers ' Day morning ,tea. • Helping with the catering at the College Art Exhibition . • Participating in the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) renewal process - a review of the College . There are a range of experiences and skills amongst the Parent Council members and, importantly, all are committed to making the Council a success and are enthusiastic and understand the role of the Council. I acknowledge and thank Council members for their efforts and dedication during the year. I also want to take the opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate the CBC Music Parents ' Group for their

work during the year. In particular, the Music Parents' Group did a fantastic job of organising and hosting the inaugural CBC Fremantle College Ball during the year. This was a fantastic event and the Council is very keen to build on this significant achievement in hosting next year's Ball. "
The CBC Music Parents ' Group also ran the College raffle during the year, which raised funds for equipment for the four new classrooms and the Performing Arts Teaching facility. The Parent Council has received fantastic support and encouragement from the College and its Leadership Team . I want to especially thank our Headmaster, Rob Henderson, for the enthusiastic way he engages with the Parent Council. I also want to acknowledge and thank Fiona Williams not only for her work with the Parent Council, but for the many things she "quietly" does to build the CBC Fremantle community. Finally, it has been a pleasure and privilege to be a member of the CBC Fremantle Parent Council during 2008 and I again thank the CBC Fremantle community for supporting the Parent Council and I look forward to your continued support in 2009. roup Report Firstly I would like to thank our dedicated committee members who have worked tirelessly this year for several events above and beyond the usual committee roles of the Music Parents' Group. Being my first year as President of the MPG I was supported by some very enthusiastic committee members who already had in place two new fundraising ventures in the inaugural CBC Black & White Ball and the CBC Car Raffle. Although these ventures were initiated and organised by the Music Parents Group, they were for the benefit of the whole CBC school community. The Black & White Ball was held at the Fremantle Sailing Club, and excellent entertainment was provided by Adam Hall & the Velvet Playboys. Adam Hall of course, is the much esteemed brass teacher and certainly knows how to play and perform, and is a great role model for our sons. Due to the success of this event and a desire for the school to create more parent involvement, the newly formed Parent Council will ensure this event continues in future years. John Hughes, a CBC Old Boy, very generously donated a car to the MPG as the major prize to the already very musically themed array of prizes, which were all donated by Music Parents' Group affiliates. A huge amount of work and effort was carried out by members of this committee and even the boys were involved in selling tickets at local shopping centres by performing to shoppers during their school holidays. Thanks must also go to all the CBC community who assisted in selling raffle tickets to make this raffle the success it was. The annual Band Camp was again held at Araluen over the Mothers' Day weekend and the music workshops proved very valuable to the boys' musical development. Due to the successful fundraising of the previous year the MPG was able to subsidise the camp fees for every music student by almost a third. Other items the MPG contributed to this year, from previous fundraising efforts, were an air conditioner for the music classroom, new percussion instruments, an electric piano and an acoustic double bass. Jazz on the Swan was again a very popular event at the Swan Yacht Club in June, with families enjoying performances by the Junior Jazz Band, the Big Band and the Jazz Orchestra. Persuaded by parents, both Mr Hall and Mr Mancuso gave us a sample of their talents (teachers of the trumpet and saxophone) and as a result of this, a couple of great impromptu teacher/student jamming sessions were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! The Visual & Performing Arts evening was again a resounding success with the introduction of a special guest performer, Fremantle's own Lady of the Blues, Lee Sappho, who performed with the Jazz Orchestra. This night also saw displays of art works and drama performances by the students along with the drawing of the long awaited CBC Car Raffle. Throughout the year the CBC bands also performed at various public events, such as welcoming the QEII Cruise ship into Fremantle, the Village Art Markets in Fremantle's Kings Square, Clancy's Fish Pub, Government House, a Melbourne Cup luncheon at the PECE and several primary school performances, to name just a few. Competing at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, receiving an Honourable Mention for the Jazz Orchestra, Certificates of Merit for both the Big Band and the Junior Jazz Bands along with many individual awards, is an indication of how successful the CBC musicians are. Again, high results were also achieved at the WA Schools Jazz Festival in September. An extremely busy year for the Bands, the Committee and one very dedicated Head of Arts, Mr Shane Mancuso, who works tirelessly for the Music Department and for the personal development of the boys. Shane has done extremely well to achieve such high results in the music department, along with all the instrumental staff who train the boys in their weekly lessons. Besides our wealth of thanks to Shane, thanks are also extended to Robert Henderson whose support is pivotal, Fiona Williams for all her assistance with our events, and to the Old Boys' Association who have donated generously to our fundraisers, and also to Shirley Allan who leaves us after serving three years as our Treasurer as her son completes his final year at CBC. It really has been a very busy year and we are looking forward to new challenges in 2009, in particular, the Jazz Orchestra undertaking a tour to Singapore in July. Mrs Claire Cranswick Music Parents' Group President

Oltf Boys' Association President's Report I am very happy and proud to be the president of your Old Boys' Association. It is very easy when you have a first class committee of willing workers. We are very fortunate that CBC Fremantle has once Glgain become a family name in the Fremantle area. Their achievements academically and in the sporting field are tremendous and second to none. The results of the Athletic Carnival. the Swimming results and the Cross Country allowed them to claim the big three results. It is a sad loss that Mr Frank Norton has accepted a new position at Aquinas College as his appetite for work and his ability with his leadership amongst the students will be greatly missed. However when one door closes another door opens and I am sure that his replacement will develop in a similar manner. Our reunions were well attended both the ten-year and the twenty-five-year. I would like to thank Fiona Williams for her great work in making these happen and for her efforts on both occasions. "What are our membership funds used for?" is a question often asked of us, so I am including a list of items to advise you all . 1. A bursary for a needy student. (Around $3000 per year.) 2. Support of the Edmund Rice Camps ($200 per year.) 3.
The reunions held each year
4. This year support of the Music Parents' Group third prize ($580.) 5.
Sundry items for use in the school.
This year we will gain around forty new members of the Old Boys' Association as they complete their Year 12 exams and accept their Old Boys' ties as recognition of this membership. Please wear them with pride. I would also like to thank John Hughes for his generous donation of a new motor car as the first prize for the Music Group raffle. John, as I am sure you are all aware, is an Old Boy of the school. Don't buy a new or second hand car without consulting John - you won't be disappointed. Planned events for the remainder of this year and 2009 are 1.
Golf day for Old Boys' versus the staff
2.
Over 65 's Old Boys and their partners morning tea in 2009.
3. Reunions of ten and twenty five year students . I would like thank my committee for their wonderful help also like to see if we might be able to obtain one or two for 2009. Mr George Ayres Old Boys' Association President.

College Captain's Report Good Evening, Mr Henderson, Father Sherman, staff, family, distinguished guests, and the Graduating Class of 2008. A Journey. A Process of development: a gradual passing from one state to another regarded as more advanced. When I sat down last weekend and began to think and refled on what I should be speaking about tonight, that one word was continually at the forefront of my mind. Journey. So I typed it into Google. I did so, not because I was unaware of its definition, but to remind myself that I am a part of something larger. Tonight marks the end of the road for the Graduating Class of 2008. This road does not lead to a dead end . It is an on-ramp to the freeway of adulthood, where each man will take a particular lane, some the same, many different. There will be a choice, on many occasions, to take the next off-ramp, and begin the next phase of your life. For each gent, this may be the same, or different, to all of your friends. So tonight, we refled on what has been an amazing five years. Whilst tonight will be a memory to be cherished by the ninety boys here, I believe each parent sitting with their son feel that they are also a part of something incredibly special. And they most deservedly are. Thankyou, to each and every parent who has pushed, driven, and enthused their son for the last five years. Your love, unconditional, and the desire for your son to live to his fullest, unwavering. I can only imagine how much of your love was spent on fees, lunches, excursions, fuel, uniforms - the list goes on. Each and every single one of us truly appreciate it, although we may not always show it at times, I am sure that our letter to you will only exemplify our appreciation. Five years is a very long time, and because of that, all of us have established many memories that we will not forget. Chris Atturo's ability to get anyone, at any time, to sing the Edmund Rice Anthem is a great example of school passion. This was most evident at the recent ACC Interschool Athletics carnival, when Chris led the whole squad in a fantastic rendition of the anthem. Another such example is Nigel Smith. His participation in nine events at the swimming carnival for his house, despite having a limited idea on how to swim butterfly, was outstanding and a sight to see. Not only does the graduating class have memories, we also have some very capable individuals, whose talents will be honed further as they grow into terrific young men. Joel Nibali's moves on the dance floor, James Fannon's talent as a water based mammal, Alesio Lanzara's commitment to study and academics, Jake Galiano and Lawrence DaLuz's passion for music, Elliot Greaney's passion for the Belt Up Cup football team, Deaglan Harney and Daniel Manganaro's love for drama, Barton Thompson's knack for making people laugh uncontrollably, Jack DiNunzio's ability to run 1OOkms without taking a breath, Matthew Brennan's ability to be a truly remarkable peer and friend, and Michael Sandford's passion for anything CBC, are only a few examples of the love that each gentlemen shares for CBC life. The culmination of such talents has led to great success for our College. This year, on the sporting field, CBC completed the 'treble', winning the 'A' division for the ACC Interschool Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics, something that has not been completed for, well, we think forever. As well, our First XVIII Football team and Senior Basketball team both went back-to-back in their respective state schoolboy competitions. The introduction of a school production this year was another major success, as well as the wonderful awards and achievements of the graduates involved in the wide variety of music and arts program. Though I think more than anything, it is the little things that we will all miss the most about CBC, I, for one, am going to miss sitting in the cloisters each recess and lunch, the Italian boys eating our pasta, and all of us enjoying our daily conversations about our weekends, girlfriends and sport. I'm sure most of the boys will feel much the same way about each of their various friendship groups. This is what is so unique about CBC Fremantle. There are small groups within year groups, but each one interacts so positively with the others. It is as though we are all part of something much larger. And indeed we are . CBC is both a College, and a community. When we walk
-14-
out the doors this evening, we leave as Graduates of a College that we are 'oh ' so proud to have been a part of. Ten years down the track, long after the memories of Mr Burgio's belief that we should all wear cashmere blazers, and long after the memories of our grade in Chemistry or History, we WILL remember the relationships we have developed, with the eighty-nine other boys surrounding us this
~vening
These relationships and bonds, I believe, would not have come about if it were not for the staff of CBC Fremantle. Their job, essentially, is to provide us with an education. Though, at CBC, they are much more than this. The staff of CBC act as mentors, whether it be in form group, or the classroom, and it is all greatly appreciated . The relationships built with staff are so unique to our College. I do not know another schooL where each student has developed such a wonderful relationship with the gardener. Each member of staff is an individual, and each brings his or her own 'touch ' in defining our College as a whole. Mr Carter is a very good example. His joking personality, and threats to throw tomatoes at me on stage this evening, in combination with his talent as a quality educator, generates a community feel to the College that is rare elsewhere. Dedication is a characteristic common among the staff of this college, and this evening, as we all take a look around, would not be possible without the hard work of our teachers and all other members of staff. A big thankyou to the College Leadership Team, past and present, including Mr Henderson, Mr 0' Neill, Mr Norton, Mr Burgio, Mr Tannock and Mr McFadden. Their commitment, dedication, and perseverance, have been impossible to miss, and as the Graduating Class, we thank them for it. To the rest of the staff, thankyou for your hard work also, for every minute you have spent outside regular hours helping boys out. It has only amplified our respect towards you all. Also to Father Sherman, thankyou so very much for your guidance and devotion over the past five years, in developing our faith , and turning us into young Catholic leaders. Not many schools would have such a commited priest on board , and I think that the thirty or so Father Sherman homilies that we have heard will continue to resonate within us for quite sometime . Finally. To the ninety gentlemen here tonight. This is it. Two weeks ago, I described the last two weeks as a step out of your comfort zone; well, tonight is yet another step. The real world awaits, and whether we move onto University, TAFE, an Apprenticeship, the workforce or travel, NEVER cease to remember who you are . We are the men of CBC Fremantle . The College has been our sanctuary for the past five years, and just as you walked into this gym in 2004 with a smile on your face, leave the front doors tonight, with not only a smile, but a mindset and attitude a confidence that you are ready to face the big wide world . Thankyou gentlemen, it has been a privilege and an honour. I wish each and every single one of you, and your family, the best of luck in the future. May you achieve your dreams, and face the world with the PASSION that only a CBC gentleman can. , In conclusion , on behalf of the Graduating Class of 2008, I will take great honour in presenting the College with a gift, which will be accepted by Father Sherman on the College 's behalf. Thankyou, and God Bless . Tyrone Thwaites College Captain

Divinity The purpose of Religious Education is not simply the transmission of knowledge to the student; it also explores the implications of the central claims for each individual. This can give an alternative perspective to materialism and help students to gain inner confidence. It happens to recognise the value of silence, gentleness, compassion, success for others and personal responsibility as well as achievement, success, recognition and reputation.
Mr Clayden for their willingness to step in and fill the void . A great thankyou goes also to those staff that have formed the Divinity Department over the past years. These are Mr Sandri, Ms Quin, Ms Lenzo, Mr Norton, Mr O'Neill and Mr Walawski. Thankyou for all your hard work during the year.

Living the Vision The College's Strategic launched in 2006, defined Fremantle's new mission - that of the formation of young Catholic leaders. Central to this is the focus on the role of the school as a carriage of Catholicism and addressing the needs of the Church to connect with youth. Our vision as a community is young men who have an active faith and who, as Catholic leaders, are agents of change in creating a more just society. While still embryonic, the Catholic Leadership program has resulted in the extension of existing faith formation initiatives and the establishment of new innovative programs designed to encourage a personal sense of God in each boy's life. experts in the field. This year the school joined with lona to travel to the remote community of Kiwirrkurra. This trip is part of the College's ongoing immersion program that aims at raising awareness of the Indigenous people and their circumstances. The Kiwirrkurra Immersion for 2008 was an incredible eye-opener for the group. It showed a different side to the aboriginal culture that challenges all stereotypes that are formed over the many years of listening to the news and other influences. When entering the school it suddenly strikes you that the whole community is surviving out in a remote and isolated corner of the world some 800km from the nearest town. It really brought a kind of respect for the people who live in this area and try to preserve what culture they have left and to educate the younger generations of their heritage. One of the suprising aspects of the trip is the realisation that the students from Kiwirrkurra were just the same as all of the kids that were living in our community. They had their interests and what they loved and we were able to share stories and tell them what we loved. The community took us hunting: we found and tasted the Maku or witchetty grubs, looked for goanna and wild cats. Overall all the students and the teachers who went to Kiwirrkurra this year came back with a new vision of the plight of the Indigenous people in remote communities. They gained a greater understanding of how deep their beliefs and culture go. It is a wholesome and worthwhile trip which is recommended to all. Mr Peter Baldry , Head of Catholic Leadership

at Kairos, because 'what happens on Kairos, stays on Kairos'. Has there ever been a time in your life when you can look at yourself, your peers and your teachers, and simply reflect, without fear of judgement or criticism. I doubt it very much. Kairos gave me the opportunity to show others a little more about myself, and in the process, learn bits about others and myself I had never encountered before. It is not an easy process, it requires a positive attitude, an open mind, and an open heart.

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Berthold Auerbach The CBC Fremantle Arts Department was kept very busy in 2008. I would like to begin by thanking my hard working staff. Miss Zoe Francis (Art) and Miss Vanessa Newton (Drama). You continue to get the best out of the boys and I appreciate your support. Special highlights of the year included our annual music camp, The Catholic Performing Arts Festival, Angelico, ViPA, CBC Art exhibition and "House of Stairs" Drama Production. "The House of Stairs" was the first college
school and outside of class time so I thank Miss Francis for her expertise and support. James D'Alesio in Year 12 received the Kevin Jackson Special Award for his outstanding printmaking piece titled, 'Modern Mustang' in this year's Angelico Art Exhibition. It is results like this that inspire our younger students to work hard and thrive, producing works that are of quality for us all to enjoy and admire. Wow! What a year it has been and how fast has it gone! The boys continue to surprise me with their artistic talent and inspiring ideas, with this year's Art Exhibition really showcasing these qualities! The Year 8 'taster' courses saw the boys explore a range of different themes and media; from robot sculptures developed from random materials, 'rock n roll' bug character clay pieces, Bogan design eskies to grophic re-designing of the good old Heinz Baked Bean can label. The boys produced a range of different and inspiring pieces which were displayed at the exhibition.

The Year 9 and 10 groups have done exceptionally well from start to finish. With exquisite lino and woodcut prints of the highest standard, music rock posters of the extreme, funky wine label design creations, super sized and super yummy lolly sculptures in all colours of the rainbow and the FUNNEST project of all (well, I think so!) ...the OP Shop Object painting project. The boys were to create a successful design to encase the surface of their chosen found object ... TVs, phones, surfboards, lamps, speakers, records, skateboards, shoes, a toaster ... you name it, they embellished it! The Art and Design Boys were given the tricky task of designing and painting the backdrops for this
year's Drama School Production, 'THE HOUSE OF STAIRS' performed in Term 3. The group project allowed the boys to combine their talents as a team, with some groups more team- like than others! The end result was impressive, with five large scale stylised designs being produced and helping to make the playa success. To my TEE Art boys, thank you for a very FUN year! It was a big learning process for the Year 11 s and to the 12s: it has been a pleasure to work with you . Elliott, James and Patty, I wish you all the best for the future; you are honest, genuine, individuals who will be sadly missed in the art room. James D'Alesio is also to be commended for winning an award at this year's Catholic Schools 'Angelico Exhibition' held at the Forrest Centre, Perth . His print 'Modern Mustang' was picked for its innovative design and control of media. The annual Visual Art Exhibition which opened on the 22 nd October went off with a bang! With a record crOWd, the inside of the common room was adorned with the finest of artworks and the festival like atmosphere outside rocked with the tunes of the music boys under the direction of Mr Mancuso. Nothing could have upset the positive energy ...well, maybe the rain half way through the speeches

Drama at CBC this year was a major event. There were numerous exceptional performances throughout the year. In Term One the Year 9s put on an impressive performance of the Passion Sunday play for our Easter Mass. Term Two saw the first of the two annual Arts Performance Evenings which included a very funny, clever and self-devised melodrama performance from Year 9s; an outstanding interpretation of Peter Handke's contemporary play Offending the Audience by the Year 10s;an absurdist piece by Year 11 s; and for the first time a performance by a group of Year 8s. All students gave committed and highly expressive performances and are to be congratulated on their after schooL recess produced by Miss Francis' Year 11 and lunch time rehearsal attendance. and 12 Art and Design classes for Terms Two and Three also saw the auditions, rehearsals and performance the theatrical flats. The production of CBC's first school production for many years. CBC Fremantle P.ut on back stage crew run by Sam Mcleod, Jack Cranswick and Claire Jay were also thoroughly proficient and organized. Meeting Mr Button Most notable at the beginning of this year was the influx of 'new blood' into the English staff. In something of a revolutionary move, the College decided to appoint Larrisa Dodsworth and Tom Rees as co-heads of department in a job-sharing capacity. We were joined by new staff members James Schubert and Shayni Nelson as full time members and Claudia Feldman and Rose Lenzo on a part time basis. We have again this year been immersed in several programs in and out of school to extend and interest the students as well as instil in them a love of English for its intrinsic value as a powerful language tool in an ever-changing whirl of technology. Our association and relationship with The Fremantle Children's Literature Centre continues to grow and develop. Groups from Year Nine to Twelve, drawn initially from the extension programs, attend the Centre four times a year to participate in workshops with authors and to write their own material which is published by the Centre . Harbour will be continuing to bring us the classics next year with a production of Jane Eyre. We also saw a production of "Macbeth" , a modern post apocalyptic drama "Far Away " at the Playhouse and a modern take on eighteenth century English Restoration Comedy in "A Laughing Matter". Library see, we try to live up to the name. In 2008, the big demand for the latest book and film releases has continued. We find students are counting down to the release of some books and we rush to get them on that day. We're forever posting notices on the door about upcoming series or unpublished extracts we have managed to get hold of. One thing's for sure, with all the exciting developments in the New Year, we will be staying at the forefront of innovations in the world of libraries. , Ms Trevanna Cooper Teacher Librarian
Idea Shop It's been an amazing year for the Library (shortly to change its name to the Idea Shop), We had the opportunity to be featured in the May Educational Supplement of the "West Australian" where the article talked about our empowerment philosophy and the variety of exciting services we offer. Thanks to the diligence of two Year 10 students, Harrison McClelland and Jason Maskos, we have been developing an on-line touch screen newsletter, as well as publishing the student newspaper "Spectrum". We even had a try at hologram-making, wrote another code-breaker challenge, and had the idea for a new library sign made from leds, (which was brilliantly put together by Mr Hortense and the electronics
students).
probably our project was to come up some innovative ideas for our library, giving it the 21 st look of new London libraries, as they are called nowadays "Idea Centres". As you

The World of Mathematics 2008 wos a very busy and productive year in the world of Mathematics at CBC Fremantle. Laptops, overhead projectors and new smartboard technologies were incorporated into the curriculum, enabling the staff to integrate a variety of learning experiences into the boys' math classes. Maths Club, run by Mr Leicester and Mr Smith, wos well attended in 2008: on an average twenty to thirty boys attend every Monday afternoon for the year, either for extra help or to extend themselves in small group activities. Year 8s have had, os usual, a very busy and challenging year. Mr Jones extended a talented group of Mathematicians in his extension class. The Year lOs enjoyed exploring and using their new Cosio Closs pad calculators os they prepared themselves for entering the Upper School. New courses will be introduced in 2009, which require use of this new technology. As usual, both the TEE mathematics and the CAF students in upper school have had a continually demanding and

Society ana Environment
Geography, Political and Legal5tudies, History, and Economics The Society and Environment Department had a very successful year in 2008. Whilst strong Year 12 results from the Class of 2007 provided a great kick-start to the year, the undoubted highlight was the Gallipoli Tour which did a great deal to promote the subject and to remind people of the importance that the subject has in the lives and identity of all Australians .

The CSC Fremantle Gallipoli Tour involved twenty seven students and three staff journeying to Turkey to visit the Gallipoli battlefields and to experience the unique cultural blend that Turkey has developed. Whilst not journeying to the ANZAC Day celebrations, the tour lasted for the whole April holidays and gave our students an amazing four days at Gallipoli where they were able to tour the monuments and gravesites and visit many of the famous places that are etched into our nation's identity. For all, the tour was a unique opportunity but for some it may prove to be a life-changing event.
From a curriculum perspective, many of the existing courses continued on with improvements, we were excited about the introduction of a unit on Indigenous Culture and History. 2008 was a great year for its introduction - the Federal Government's Apology early in the year provided a sharp focus on the history and status of Indigenous people in Australia which we used as a starting point in our course.

I
I,
"Lest we forget" In April this year, staff and students from CBC Fremantle were involved in the College ' s inaugural tour of Turkey and the Gallipoli battlefields. The tour saw twenty seven students along with Mr Carter, Mr Foote and myself travel around western Turkey, from Istanbul to the ancient city of Ephesus and back again, but as expected the highlight of the tour was the four days that the group spent on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The idea for the tour dated back to 2002 when I visited Gallipoli and was inspired to return there w ith a group of students to enable them to experience what I just had. These plans for a tour received a shot in the the arm when Mr Carter ¡
Society and Environment staff and told me of his aim to take students to Gallipoli one day. So with two eager staff and the approval of the College Leadership Team, the CBC Fremantle Gallipoli Tour of 2008 was on its way. Early in Term Two last year, an information night was organised to judge the level of enthusiasm from the students and families of the College. Our initial fears that no one would attend the information night were soon dispelled with the attendance of approximately thirty six families on the night. Within a week more than fifteen students had paid their deposit, which meant that the tour would definitely go ahead . By the end of the application process, twenty seven students had signed up (although I am sure several parents were keen to add to the numbers). The succ ess of the numbers meant that the tour required a third staff member, whic h brought Mr Foote into the touring party. Although the tour was an initiative of the Society and Environment Department,
-67-
Over the next year, the preparations for the tour gained momentum. These preparations ranged from arranging passports and receiving our tour vaccines through to arranging tutorials and guest speakers to provide us all with a better understanding of the Gallipoli campaign . The decision to fundraise for the tour resulted in delivery of several thousand phone books and the organisation of a highly entertaining quiz night that was held in Term Four last year. It needs to be said that much of the tour's success was due to the close involvement of the students ' families. Without the support and positive attitude of the families, the tour would have been a lot less successful.
Finally, after all the planning and preparation, the day of departure came around and so on the final day of Term One this year, the thirty -strong party assembled at Perth International Airport for the first leg of the tour. After a few speeches and motherly tears, the group headed off to Kuala Lumpur before transferring to a flight bound for Istanbul. For several students, this was their first time out of Australia and for Jake Walker it was the first

Technology and Enterprise
Learning with their hands I am indebted to the great staff of this Learning Area, most especially Mr Geoff Buss, who covered for me as Head of Learning Area whilst I served overseas with the Defence Force. Things have certainly moved along in a very exciting direction in the Department. 2008 saw the introduction of the Materials and Design plus the Career and Enterprise courses of study and the consolidation of Engineering Studies . We also saw the return of Mr Garry Hart this year and Garry's enthusiasm and idea-generation are a breath of fresh air. Garry has taken up the challenge of the Materials and Design course and has been involved with Catholic Education Office and Curriculum Council planning to ensure that our boys have the latest and the best curriculum available in Western Australia. Garry has really moved the boys along with their achievements this year. Mr Don McNamee has been responsible for the Career and Enterprise course and this has
been popular with the boys, who also found their knowledge of Rugby improved as a spin off! Don has also taught one class of girls from lona, who come to CBC on a Monday morning for this course. Engineering Studies have continued to develop with the purchaseofacomputer-controlled milling machine, allowing the boys iii:~:::---~~eIliiP~"T1-=-"'" to design and prototype using skills that are very relevant to industry today. Geoff Buss, Garry Hart and myself have also attended a course on a 3D Engineering Design Package used by BAE systems, NASA and the US Dept of Defence to name but a few. All our Year 8 boys do basic electronics and then may choose to return in Year 9 or 10 and some enrol for the Robotics Club or the CISCO course run by Mr John Hortense. John has worked hard for both the Science Department and for us, ensuring the boys' knowledge of Electronics is giving them a good foundation to move on to higher studies in this field. Of course all this would not be possible without the help of our technician , Mr Bob Kestel. Bob supports the Department in many ways that are often 'unsung'. I am not sure that we would be in the great position we are if it were not for Bob's maintenance and repairs, which free up the teaching staff to get on with planning and developing curriculum and learning experiences for the boys. Next year will see the final Course of Study come on line, Design Studies. This will take the place of Technical Graphics and will allow the boys to explore Design in a technical context. I believe we have a few budding Architects and Industrial Designers in our midst. We will also be introducing Vocational Education and Training (VET) studies, that wili be integrated into all of our • Courses of Study. This will commence with the boys who are enrolled for Engineering Studies 1All B and they will complete Units of Competency toward a Certificate I in Engineering . This they will achieve as well as their normal WACE certification, after successful completion of Year 12. Thanks to all and especially the boys for their enthusiasm and hard work that has made this a really exciting place to be in 2008. Mr Stephen Coggin Head of Technology and Enterprise

Morgan House "

Morgan House 2008 started off fantastically well when Morgan House broke through for its first Swimming title in quite some time. It was a fantastic day for both staff and students seeing Rice knocked off perch!
House Councillors and Prefects did a wonderful job organising House events such as footy tipping and intra-house basketball competitions as well as providing invaluable support for both myself and the Mentor teachers. In Morgan House we were fortunate enough to have the College Captain, Tyrone Thwaites, who was a positive influence for the rest of the House and could be relied upon at all times to offer a helping hand when required .
men they are, as well as having the opportunity to present the certificates to the graduating Year 12s. It is amazing to see the physical, spiritual and emotional journey these boys go on during their time at CBC Fremantle. I would like to thank our wonderful mentor teachers Ms Vanessa Newton, Mr Adrian Correia, Mr Jason Matthews, Miss Claudia Feldman, Mr Julian Smith, Mr Geoff Buss and Ms Angela Calanni for their outstanding work and support they provide the students of Morgan. With these types of teachers it is no wonder CBC Fremantle produces such outstanding young Catholic leaders. I am very confident that in 2009 Morgan will continue to retain their current tradition of excellence. We have an amazing cohort of young men and I look forward to seeing what they may achieve in 2009. Mr Ben Grose Head of House
The students of Morgan House performed outstandingly well in all areas throughout 2008. It was not uncommon for me to have to sign up to ten Bronze Certificates every morning , and this was reflected when report time came around with a huge amount of students receiving over 80% positive indicators and no students having over 20% negative indicators in Term Three. The opportunity to be the Head of Morgan has provided me with numerous opportunities, including seeing the new Year 8s develop into the young confident

Patrick House "The difference between the impossible and possible is a man's determination" Tommy Lasorda Determination is the Patrick House motto. However, when I look at the gentlemen and staff who comprise Patrick House, words such as dedication, persistence, service, commitment and faith all spring to the forefront of my mind. I have witnessed all of these attributes in the boys this year. year r ted the coming of e new Year boys into College Patrick The 12group
participation and House Spirit. Patrick achieved a third placing in the Swimming and a close second in the Athletics. Commendations must go to Year 12 who showed outstanding leadership and enthusiasm. Boys had barely finished a race before they were lining up for the next one. Well Done, Men! It was on these days that I felt extreme pride in seeing young men push themselves beyond their expectations and continuousl volunteerto re t

a day of orientation and a fun afternoon activity of bowling in order to get to know them. The 2008 House Swimming and Athletics Carnivals were days of high
commitment and humour Mentor Teachers have provided to their respective groups. Miss Balkau, Mr Leicester, Mrs Nelson, Miss Ricciardi, Mr Hanna and Mr Butcher have all been a valuable asset to Patrick House. I would also like to thank the Patrick House Council for the fresh ideas, service and commitment to fund raising.
Edmund Rice Day is always a day of enjoyment and reflection. The boys behaved maturely and respectfully as the College reflected on the life of Edmund Rice and celebrated the day with a full College Mass. The fun comes in the afternoon, when boys and their Mentor Teachers get to go off to various activities like ice skating, Qazar, beach volley ball, bowling and more. Patrick House did not win the Wedd Cup this year, however their efforts throughout the year in all areas were exceptional. In particular Christian Service and the Arts. Many of the boys have volunteered their time and talents for Community and College events . I and the students would like to acknowledge all the extra hours,

Rice House
Rice House "Success only ever comes before Work once, . .. that once is in the Dictionary." 2008wasamemorableyearforRice House. Through much hard work, it was a year that saw us regain the Wedd Cup, after Morgan House had held it for the past three years . It must be said that the Year 12 Rice House Graduates of 2008 played a significant role in steering 'Rice House ' in the right direction in each of the four components that make up the Wedd Cup: Academics, Sports, Christian Service and the Arts. The same can be said about this year's Rice House Council members.Although as a group they probably made a slow start to the year, as the year wore on
members grew into their roles and their levels of involvement in House activities increased. Rice House finished first for Academics in 2008. Well done to all ' boys, a tremendous improvement on last year's fourth place. From last to first in the space of just one year was a mighty effort. A great number of boys in Rice House this year received recognitions for terrific academic work. For most this was through Bronze Certificates wheneve reports went out, well as Certificates Distinction for various subjects as well as competitions. Sports for 2008 sa Rice House finish overall in second place. Early in the year a second in the House swimming
stranglehold on the event in recent years. Special mention must go to Gabriel Wright who broke the U15 Butterfly Record, and also won the U15 Champion Swimmer. In Cross Country we placed first overall (first in Year 8 and Year 9, second in Year 11 and Year 12 and third in Year 10). Special mention must go to Kai Eardley who won the Year 8 event. As for Athletics, we had a year we would like to forget, finishing first at the wrong end. Congratulations however must go to Taylor Merrutia who was named champion boy of Year 9. As for Christian Service, we finished third this year. We started out very strongly in this category. For us this was in the form of the 2007 Christmas Appeal. The Rice House contribution to this event was significant and truly special. Thanks to all Rice House families this! Unfortunately a group we did not anage to maintain level through remainder of the Christian Service events for the year. Hopefully next year will be a different story. final category is Arts, and this was
-87-
a category that for Rice House saw us sharing the same fate as our Athletics result. This is an area our Rice House Council members have identified as an area we as a house can significantly build on next year and as a group they have committed themselves to doing exactly that. As I mentioned earlier, Rice House has had a successful as well as enjoyable year which partly can be attributed to the students, particularly the senior leaders of the house, but recognition must also go to the wonderfully dedicated and caring Rice House Mentors: Mr Frank Williams, Miss Lisa Nagle, Miss Meagan Curry, Ms Trevanna Cooper, Mr Garry Hart and Miss Zoe Francis. In closing, on behalf of all the Rice House staff and students who will be returning to CBC Fremantle next year, can I say to all this year's 2008 Year 12 'Rice Bubbles' it has been a pleasure. In the years that follow I look forward to hearing how you're progressing though life. "Difficult things take time to achieve ... impossible things take a IiHle longer." Ramon Anderson. performance, we at least had the spirit. A second in the Cross Country and third in the Athletics gave us some hope, but our House Sport endeavours were sadly lacking, ultimately costing us much needed Wedd Cup points. The major focus of the year, however, was Catholic Leadership. In the past. our fundraising has been remarkably poor, so with the help of the House Prefects, we formed a Samson House Footy Tipping competition , which would
have always been Samson strong performers in the Arts and Academic areas of the Wedd Cup, but have been dismal in the areas of Service (now Catholic Leadership) and Sport. So it was w ith great anticipation that we ' entered the Swimming Carnival in Term 1 with hopes of glory and achievement. Alas, it was not to be . Despite a very bright start by the Year 8s, the rest of the house
component of the Wedd Cup. Combined with a second placing in both the Arts and Academic areas, Samson wound up coming a narrow second in the overall standings of the Wedd Cup - a magnificent effort considering our poor performances of previous years.
see 75% of funds injected into the competition donated to charity. Thanks largely to Deaglan Hamey and a host of House Councillors, not to mention the commitment and dedication of all participants, the competition was able to raise over $600 for the Motor Neurone Disease Society of Western Australia . This was a huge effort by the boys, and considering it was only the first year the competition was run on such a large scale, I fully expect this amount to increase coming

The Division Two relay swimmers gained seventy from a maximum possible eighty points. In almost all cases, Division Two swimmers train all season for their one fifty metre Division Two relay swim, and what a difference it makes. This win was truly a Team effort.
CBC Wins Fourth ACe A Grade Swimming Championship in Five Years It was at 6.30am on Tuesday 25 th March at Fremantle Pool when thirty two boys arrived for training on a public holiday with the rest of the College population still tucked up in bed that confirmed that this CBC Fremantle Swimming Squad was a winning squad in every sense of the word. This Tuesday morning, the three holiday trainings three months earlier and the consistently outstanding manner in which the squad went about its training all season stamped this squad as the best the College had ever produced regardless of the result that was to be determined the next day.

Term Four 2007 training sessions had greater numbers than we have ever had. Twelve incoming Year 8 swimmers trained magnificently and were again the biggest numbers we have ever had. The holiday trainings were wonderfully attended. The squad led the way at the House Carnival with Gabriel Wright and Jamie Sturgeon breaking College Records in butterfly and backstroke respectively. The time-trials at Hale and Santa Maria were great successes, as was the Quad Meet where we finished third behind, Aquinas and Hale but infront of Guildford Grammar. Throughout the year we had wonderful ¡ leadership from our Captain, James Fannon, and our Vice Captains, Michael Sandford and Mitchell Vickridge, who presented the team most creditably at the College Assembly. Kyle Hodson, Aaron Minervini and Chris McDonald swam up an age group and did an outstanding job. Thanks must go to Mr McGrath who drove us to meets and did much work behind the scenes.

Cross Country Re The final race of the day, the Under 19s event, really showed that CBC meant business. Chris Atturo ran an outstanding race to place third, Jack DiNunzio placed fourth and Anthony . Sciano showed fighting spirit to place seventh. This gave us a clear win in this age group. So by the end of the day we had three Year group victories, the Junior Boys' Shield, the Senior Boys' Shield and the Overall Boys' Aggregate Shield. A huge thanks must go to Mr Jason , Matthews and Mr Adrian Correia for their commitment to the team and all the early mornings they put in to ensure the team had every chance of success.
CBC Fremantle Win ACC Cross Country It was obvious from the first training session that this year's Cross Country team would accept nothing but success. Training was not for the faint-hearted,with most sessions involving about six kilometres incorporating endurance, interval and speed work. In the past this level of training may have scared students away, but in fact it had the opposite effect with all sessions having at least thirty starters. With the likes of Jack DiNunzio, Sam Monaghan and the Edwards brothers pushing the group, training was done at break-neck speed, with all students working hard. It was not uncommon to see a few boys fertilising the oval. Our first event was the State Championships at McGillivray Oval. Our boys performed outstandingly well, with our Under 15 boys winning their division and the team coming a close second to Trinity. Some great individual performances were Lex Kuster placing fifth, Sam Menegola ninth and Anthony Sciano eleventh
The main event for us was the ACC Cross Country Carnival at Perry Lakes . The training had been done, but would the team perform? The day started well with Gabriel Cipriano finishing fourth, Kai Eardley seventh and Ben Gaffney eleventh . This placed us second in the Under 14 age group. The second race of the day was the Under 15s. Hugo MacKenzieRae was our best performer in this age group, racing a fantastic event to place twelfth¡ The next race of the day was the Under 16s. On paper this looked like our strongest Year group and they lived up to expectation, with Cameron Eardley finishing fifth, Ryan Edwards sixth and Sam Monaghan eighth. We were the clear winners of the age group The Under 17s race gave us another three top ten finishers. With Sam Menegola placing sixth , Cameron Edwards ninth, and Aaron Minervini tenth , this gave us another first place for the Year group.

The Cross Country team should be congratulated for their efforts. We are now the hunted and will have to work twice as hard next year, and with continued efforts we can build a culture of Cross Country success at CBC Fremantle!

, Quinn in a distance of 12,62m Finally, I would again like to congratulate all boys in the 2008 Athletics' team, It was truly an amazing result and I was very proud to watch the young men from CBC Fremantle prove themselves in so many ways on and off the track, The spirit that was shown from all boys, Years 8 to 12, puts us in good stead for the future. The challenge next year lies in continuing our success.
Althetic5 team make record win. The CBC Fremantle athletics team proved its overall strength at this year's Athletics carnival with a dominant team effort. It was the first time in ten years that Sacred Heart College had been beaten in the Boys' Aggregate and this came after a term of hard training and dedication. It was a day where we were greeted with perfect weather and our team shone from the start. Led by Athletics Captain Christopher Atturo, the team looked like one strong and committed unit from our warm up laps to our victory song. The depth of team spirit could be seen through the great support the boys provided for each other. There were some fantastic individual results throughout the day, with many boys performing personal bests. CBC held a narrow eleven point lead going into the relays. The pressure was on for smooth change over and no mistakes to ensure we gained maximum scores. With a first, two seconds and a third CBC stretched its lead and won comfortably.
The individual Champion Athlete is awarded for each age group to the boy who wins the most points for his school. We had some excellent results in 2008: Champion Boy Under 14 - Jordan Paynter 67 points Champion Boy Open - Andrew Emsavana 60 points. These boys are to be congratulated on their efforts throughout the day. Both boys were competing all day, without breaks, showing the level of commitment and determination they have to do their best for CBC Fremantle. Records were also broken on the day CBC Under 15 - 1500m, Christopher Carlson in a time of 4:37:02 CBC Under 15 - High Jump, Lance Brockway in a height of 1.70m CBC Under 16 - 400m, Alexander Kuster in a time of 54.06 Records were set in the new Athletics weights for 2008: ACC Open D 1 - Shot Put, Garron Derrington in a distance of 12.61m ACC Open D2 - Shot Put, Samuel

Thank you and congratulations for developing the skills our athletes required to win. Mr Brendan McGrath Head of Sport

BeltUpCup The CBC Football Team went into the 2008 Belt Up Cup and SAS football competitions as the team to beat due to their undefeated run the previous year which saw them take out both competitions. The team was selected from a number of trainings and scratch matches and was made up of the best footballers in the College, some of who were members of the previous year's team. The boys made a promising start , to the season, accounting for the always-strong Willetton SHS and worthy competitors Winthrop Baptist College. These two wins progressed the boys onto the first stage of the finals leg. The first final was a tough game against the fierce Leeming SHS who threw everything they had at the game but eventually our boys kicked away to register a 9.6.60 to 3.3.21 win with B.Binning and T.Thwaites kicking three each and B.Thompson and N.Tarquinio starring in the middle. The next final was against a much bigger Kolbe Catholic College, with the winner progressing through to the Grand Final. The
game was tight all day with some inaccurate kicking restricting our boys from running away with the game in the closing stages. To the boys' credit they were able to stay strong and book their place in the Grand Final with a 7.13.55 to 7.2.44 win over Kolbe with N.Carlson kicking 4 and L.Cronan and E.Greaney unstoppable over the ground. Grand Final Day saw a rematch of last year's Grand Final against the physical Woodvale SHS who we beat by a point in a thriller. We got off to a flying start with L.Cronan starting in the middle of the ground, our midfield looking unstoppable, our backs impenetrable and our forwards untouchable. After half time Woodvale mounted their attack and came back to be level mid way through the last, though with some desperate efforts from G.Derrington, B.Thompson and E.Greaney our boys were able to hold on and claim back to back flags winning 8.10.58 to 6.10.46. Goals scorers for the day included T.Thwaites, A La nzara , J.Peek and L.Turner, all kicking two each, while best on ground went to G.Derrington and L.Cronan.

Smarter Than Smoking- Cup. The Smarter than Smoking Cup is a State-wide football competition involving both metro and country schools. This year saw CBC assemble a very talented and strong outfit. Led strongly by captains Kieran Thompson and Declan Spencer and vice captains Kaiden Matera and Jake Foster, the boys went into the season with high expectations and nothing but a finals appearance was going to be acceptable. This year the South Fremantle zone was divided into two pools of six, with the top team of each pool going into the zone final for a chance to represent South Fremantle for the remainder of the competition. The boys breezed through the pool stages making light work of their opposition, with comprehensive wins against Emmanuel, Sommerville, Winthrop, Lakelands and Seton. This saw them finish top of their pool and straight into the Zone final against a highly rated Gilmore College. Both teams had gone through the pool stages undefeated and were ready for a tough and physical encounter. The start of the match saw Gilmore come out firing , kicking a couple , of early goals and this put CBC straight on the back foot. The boys looked flat and they were playing the worst football they had played all year. Bad decisionmaking, poor skill errors and a lack of accountability were costing the boys heavily, and with only a few boys prepared to put their bodies on the line for the team, defeat was looking inevitable. However the boys were kept in the game through a couple of great individual efforts: Jordie Fienberg was magnificent working tirelessly in the middle, while cocaptain Declan Spencer led from the front giving us a target all over the ground . Brad Taylor and Sam Cassells were solid down back
while Ben Sokol continued to give us a target up forward. The second half saw a different CBC side come out to play with a new-found belief, and a willingness to go in for the hardball saw the boys run allover Gilmore. Unfortunately Gilmore scored the first goal of the half against the run of play which was going to make the task a whole lot more difficult but still achievable with CBC dominance. Declan Spencer come out firing and seemed to be everywhere as he combined with Turner, D' Andrea , Fienberg and Matera to keep clearing the ball into our forward fifty. Our backline was impenetrable with Cassells, Taylor and Timewell really stepping up. Our forward pressure, created by the hard tackling of a relentless Justin Rullo, saw the ball locked in our forward line creating a number of goal scoring opportunities. Kieran Thompson's move to full forward saw him boot two goals and put CBC within two points with thirty seconds to spare, but it was all too little too late with the boys just falling short. The loss was devastating, especially considering the talent the team had available. However that is football , and the boys will learn so much from that loss. It is just unfortunate it was a knock-out final as the boys had the potential to go all the way. Two weeks later the boys were given a chance to redeem themselves in the Oblate Cup. Mazenod had made the Smarter than Smoking quarter finals so it was our chance to prove that we were still good enough to be in the competition. It was another tough encounter but unlike the final, the boys were not going to buckle ,putting in a full team effort. Yr Mitchell Emery and Aiden Dell 'olio gave plenty of promise for the future with a dominant performance through the middle,

while Brad Taylor and Nick D' Andrea showed their class to lead CBC to a come-from-behind victory ' and help the school take home the inaugural cup. Ben Sokol capped off a great year to take out the Best and Fairest, becoming the first Year 8 to do so. Co-captain Declan Spencer was runner-up in his first year of footy, which was a tremendous effort. Sam Cassells and Brad Taylor both had te~fic seasons and finished third, and Kaiden Matera won our leading goal kicker, booting, thirteen goals. Although the season did not pan out the way we had hoped, the boys showed a lot of promise and the future of CBC football looks to be in great hands. Many thanks have to be given to Mr Clayden who moulded the team together over the past couple of years and who had to relinquish the coaching position due to family commitments. Also to Harley Van Der Wielen, Michael Dundon, Cameron Eardley, Dean Van Schalkwyk, Callam Cox and Nick Tarquinio, who assisted me through out the competition, as well as all the parents who came out and watched our games - your support was greatly appreciated. It was a pleasure coaching the boys and I will be looking forward to next year with great anticipation. Mr Adrian Correia Coach

Oblate Cup First XV Rugby started at CBC in February with the Wellborn Cup for our First XV and carried on through Term Two with our Year 9 and First XV playing in the combined schools and college competition. The firsts won a few and lost a few. Stand out contributors were Seamus Pegum , Nicholas Short and Lewis Sinclair. Some of the Year 11 s improved over the year, Liam Phipps, front rower, and Kieran Broadbent in particular. The Year 9s were well led by Oliver Tinley, who played well all year and showed great leadership. Other players who deserve a mention are Luke Biondillo, Jesse Sinclair and Jordan Pittorini. The Year 9s narrowly missed out on a place in the finals.

CBC boys from Year 9 to 12, rowing at Fremantle Rowing Club, completed the WA Regatta in September after a successful that commenced in season May. Balancing other sporting commitments and study, this group d isplayed the tenacity and toughness to end up winning most State Championship events contested and many other races during the season. The club's winning the Novice Pennant , (junior and first year rowers) for the second year running owed a lot to their consistent performance. The State Championships saw nearly every CBC boy with a win and a medal, with a few obtaining multiple wins. This was due entirely to the attitude they took to the sport and the consistent application to the training regime. In addition to the on-the-water work, school-based fitness sessions played a major part in maintaining the edge over other clubs.
interstate regattas. Several of the older boys have contested places in state crews and the school and club support their endeavours. We look forward to seeing CBC students occuping seats in future Kings Cup, youth Olympics and Lightweight crews as Western Australia representatives. In 2009 we wish to continue raising the profile of our rowing and invite future participation from Term One for Year 9 students and above. Well done, Rowers. Mr Damien Flynn Coach

Junior Basketball The junior basketball team comprising a mixture of Year 8 and 9 students participated in the Harbour Section of the competition on Thursday 3rd of July. The boys were keen and motivated to do well and their enthusiasm was evident in their first game against Rockingham . The team played to the best of their ability, running hard and shooting some amazing baskets. Unfortunately they fell just short and went down to the Rockingham side in a close result. Emmanuel were their next opponents and were physically much taller and stronger but this was no deterrent and the boys played an exciting and fast brand of basketball. Emmanuel were run off their feet and CBC were victorious by twelve points made possible by a great team effort. The last game saw the boys face the undefeated Seton who quickly broke away to a ten to nothing lead . However the never give up attitude of the CBC team surfaced again and they rallied to close within four points with only 'nutes remaining . The boys went down in a close finish but are to be commended on their spirit and tenacity. Overall the team played with great determination and sportsmanship, best players during the carnival were Jacob Hill, Kieran Thompson, Sam Cassells and Jordan Garic.

Basketball Report The second half was always going to be a challenge without star rebounder Jake 'JT' Thornton, but the boys were ready. Two of Nick Ruljancich-King's eight- or- so pin-point assists, resulted in three free throws to Thwaites, and the CBC boys were away. This was followed by an ELECTRIFYING dunk by Igor Nujic. Callum Knowles and James Fannon were a dominant combination on the boards, tearing the defensive end apart with sheer brute strength . The quarter finished with a beautiful layup by Michael Sandford, and the 'slowest ever' two points had the boys up 36-34 with a quarter remaining .
CBC BASKETBALL TEAM GOES BACK-TO-BACK IN WILDCATS BASKETBALL COMPETITION The CBC Basketball team has had a very successful season this year. In Term 1they participated in the ACC competition and went through the competition undefeated until the final round. Here they met Clontarf in a mini Grand Final. In what was the toughest game all season, the team was defeated in the last quarter, which cost the team the title and placed them in second position one point's difference. Best players for the six game season were Tyrone Thwaites and Michael Sandford, with Jake Thornton being named the most consistent player. The team then participated in the Open lightning carnival at Rockingham where they met Rockingham High School in the final to progress to the next round. Rockingham is a specialist basketball school and in what proved to be a tough-fought match the team ran away with the game in the last few minutes to advance to the knock out phase. The team then defeated Kolbe College in double overtime and pinched a win over Lumen Christi College to advance to
the championship game for the second year in a row. Igor Nujic and Nicholas Ruljancich-King were both instrumental in getting the team into the final. Then ,on Tuesday 26 August, the CBC Basketball team ventured to 'ye olde' Perry Lakes basketball stadium in an attempt to create history. It was the team's defence of its 2007 title on the line against Leeming SHS, our opponents from the previous year. A twelve point first quarter to Igor Nujic saw the team take a steady first quarter lead, 14- 13. It seemed Leeming had come to play, despite the defeat we provided them in 2007. Tyrone Thwaites had the tough assignment of defending Fraser McDougall, and kept their 'star' to just the two points at the first change. The second quarter provided a change of pace, with Sam Menegola's efforts and Sandford's gravity defying rebounds providing the spark the boys needed. Despite having a poor offensive quarter, the boys were still in the hunt and were down by one at the main change (23-24).
-132 -
The last quarter was simply amazing. Chris Johnson dazzled adoring fans with two quick three pointers, and CBC never looked back. The game was finished in emphatic style, with some Mitch Mudie magic setting up Nujic nicely to seal the win . The final score, 48-42, with CBC taking out the All Schools' Basketball competition for the second year running. Coach Mark Clayden described being a back-to-back champion as "simply wonderful ". Big thanks go to Coach Clayden for another successful campaign. CBC : 14-23-36-48 LEEMING: 13-24-34-42 CBC:
