Last Friday evening the College conducted its Graduation Mass and Ceremony for the Class of 2016. This was a very poignant occasion which provided each of our graduates and their families with the opportunity to reflect upon the journey they had undertaken while members of the CBC Fremantle community. During my address on the evening I spoke about the importance of our graduates recognising that they lead very privileged lives and accepting the responsibilities that come with this circumstance. I also encouraged them to be accepting of the challenges in their futures knowing that they are well prepared to face them. The following short excerpt captures the aspirations which were expressed for them in this regard:
So be brave. You have been brought up at home and received an education at school which has equipped you to be change agents in our society. Be proud of your status as gentlemen and seize every wonderful and exciting challenge which exists in your future. Always be a humble man committed to the welfare of others and be grateful for all of the talents that you possess and the gifts you will inevitably receive in the future. As part of the ceremony, the College Captain, Riley Faulds, was joined by Harry Bird and Keane Bourke in providing reflections on their time at CBC and these were certainly a feature of the evening. In a sign of great maturity these boys were able to look back on their experiences at

school and discern those which were most powerful and pertinent to their formation as good young men. On Sunday evening, our College Awards Night was particularly well attended and provided the opportunity for more than 300 students to be publicly acknowledged for their achievements during this year. Congratulations to all of the boys who received subject awards on the evening. Being the top performing student in a subject is a special honour and indicates outstanding ability and commitment. Some boys received multiple awards in this category and were appropriately recognised. An even larger group of boys were awarded Certificates of Merit or Certificates of Excellence during the ceremony. These awards are available to all students regardless of innate ability and are truly reflective of the emphasis on personal excellence promoted at CBC Fremantle.
The criterion for the Certificate of Merit is a minimum of 90% positive indicators on each of the first three school reports issued during the year. While this standard is very high, it is achievable for each student. The Certificate of Excellence is available to any boy achieving 100% positive indicators for each report during the year. The broad cross-section of students receiving this award reinforces the place of clearly defined criteria and concrete targets in the effective education of boys. To conclude this hectic period on the school calendar, the College Visual Art Exhibition was opened in the presence of a large and appreciative audience on Wednesday evening this week. Year 11 students Thomas Gleeson and Toby Tomlinson opened this year’s exhibition, which contained an extraordinarily diverse collection of quality art pieces. Congratulations to Ms Stephanie Hantzis,
Ms Zoe Francis, Ms Leanne Ogden and Mr Shane Mancuso for their encouragement of our young artists and for their hard work in preparing and presenting the exhibition.
The Rite Journey I’m sure that all families have been able to follow the progress of our innovative Year 9 programme, The Rite Journey, through the regular updates which have been provided in this newsletter throughout the year. Next week is designated as Rite Journey Week and marks one of the major activities associated with this programme. All boys will spend some time camping in Bindoon, on Retreat and engaged in challenging activities. We wish all of the students and staff involved a safe and enjoyable time away from school. Achievements Nathaniel Bond-Williams (Year 11) competed at the Western Australian All Schools Athletics Competition on Saturday night, winning a silver medal in the Under 18 110m Hurdles. This now qualifies Nathan to compete in the Australian Athletics All Schools event in Canberra in early December.
Fundraising one painted nail at a time This week CBC Fremantle students and staff participated in the Polished Man fundraising campaign with flying colours. The innovative programme challenges men to raise awareness about violence against children by painting one fingernail to represent the one in five children affected by violence before the age of 18. CBC students and staff didn’t hesitate to get on board and support such a great cause, with hundreds of fingers painted in solidarity. Even before our official launch of the campaign, donations had already been received from parents, students, staff and Old Boys. All funds raised

Top award for students One of the most anticipated moments at the annual Awards Evening is the announcement of the pinnacle of achievement at CBC Fremantle, the Edmund Rice Awards. This year, seven outstanding Year 12 students received the Edmund Rice Award: Keane Bourke, Alec Da Silva, Riley Faulds, Bevan Grant, Yusef Hourani, Emmanuel Terzoudis-Lumsden and Tony Ziegelaar. Each of these young men have consistently captured the spirit of the legacy of the Christian Brothers’ founder and modelled the teachings of Christ, and have been shining examples for their fellow students. You can read the award citations for each 2016 Edmund Rice Award winner below.
Keane Bourke Keane has made many contributions to the College, using his talents generously through academics, support of the arts and through the use of his media skills. It is the mature approach which Keane adopts when undertaking all of these endeavours that makes him a leader. His passion, love and respect for CBC Fremantle and the Edmund RIce tradition is exceptional and he has a deep understanding of the plight of the marginalised while displaying great courage and compassion when standing up and speaking out for others.
Alec Da Silva The ways that Alec has shown leadership are many. As a Eucharistic Minister he has shown a deep commitment to his faith and the liturgical life of the College. With his unceasingly positive and encouraging manner he has been an integral part of the Senior Soccer team. Alec has cheered on, challenged and led his peers while always maintaining their dignity. He has spoken out when he has seen injustice and is often the first to act. Alec has reflected Gospel values to all.
Riley Faulds Riley is an outstanding leader and has continued to develop as an exceptional representative of the College while being an excellent role model to his peers. His commitment and genuine expression of the College values is demonstrated in every action and word, and has been inspirational for all. Committed to personal excellence, Riley has achieved many honours, always with humility and an eye on how he might serve others. Riley has been a shining example of Catholic leadership.

Bevan Grant It is the quality of Bevan’s relationships with others that has impressed people. Mature, humble, responsible and positive, Bevan has shown the face of Christ to those he has met along the way. Bevan was described by one of peers as ‘making everyone feel special and important, and who would help you no matter what’. This was a sentiment expressed by many. Bevan is a gentle soul who has loved tenderly, acted justly and walked humbly with God and this community.
Yusef Hourani Yusef’s quiet and just manner has impressed all who know him. A talented musician, artist and academic, he has given many hours to the arts, while demonstrating personal excellence in all aspects of College life. Yusef’s commitment to his faith is exceptional, and with a humble heart he has served this community with kindness and demonstrated an inspiring commitment to justice and goodness.
Emmanuel Terzoudis-Lumsden Manos joined CBC part way through the journey, but has been an exceptional contributor to every aspect of College life. Personal excellence is seen in everything that he has undertaken; academics, music, sport, drama … the list goes on. Manos exhibits total commitment and the mature and caring manner that he brings to these endeavours is inspiring. Often the one who sees a need, Manos is quick to volunteer and the service he gives in support of his peers and the staff has been a gift to them all.
Tony Ziegelaar Tony’s happy and positive rapport with his peers and staff is genuinely warm and caring. He has lived a true life of Servant Leadership, and his care for others has been valued by everyone. Tony’s commitment to the Music and Drama programme has seen him put many hours into ensuring that others are assisted and supported. At the centre of this has been a strong sense of faith and a life based on the values CBC holds dear.

Master Mind Australia January Preparation Programme The January Preparation Programme aims to prepare students for Term 1 (2017) before the academic year begins. The classes will revise those important components from the 2016 syllabus that are vital for success in the new-year. The programme will also preview what students can expect in their courses in 2017. Courses will be conducted at Leeming Senior High School from 18 to 25 January, 2017. Ignite Live Catholic Youth Event Ignite Live is a unique Catholic youth event which is much like the large concerts and festivals, featuring live bands and DJs. Ignite Live brings together hundreds of teenagers and young adults from across Perth and the final event for 2016 is being held at the amazing Quarry Amphitheatre on Friday 18 November. The main event is 7pm to 9pm with additional entertainment before and afterwards. Attend as a group or attend on your own. Spring Prayer Day Spring Prayer Day is to be held at the Mary MacKillop Centre, 16 York Street, South Perth on Wednesday 16 November 10am to 1pm (9.30am morning tea and lunch provided). Taizé Meditative Prayer You are invited to join the South Perth Taizé praying community at St Joseph’s Chapel, 16 York St, South Perth, on Sunday 20 November from 7pm to 8pm (Chapel doors open 6.30pm). Theme: Praying for all those who have died especially our families and those who have died in tragic circumstances. Bring a small torch, a friend and a small plate to share for supper. The Italian assistant is a university student from Italy, and the minimum duration for their stay is 11 weeks, which can be shared between two families. Host families provide free accommodation, collect and return the assistant to the airport; assist in locating and accessing day-to-day services and show the assistant some of the sights of Perth and its surroundings. The assistant is expected to help around the home for four hours a week with duties such as babysitting, cooking, tutoring of the host families’ children, gardening, etc. If you are interested in being a host, please contact silviar@cbcfremantle.wa.edu.au.
