Robocup challenge On Friday 5 August Mr John Hortense and the enthusiastic group of Robotics Club boys took their robots to Curtin University to take part in the SciTech Robocup. The annual competition showcases students’ talents at designing, programming and building robotics to perform certain set tasks. The challenges vary from a choreographed dance sequence to a search and rescue mission where a robot has to find an identified object, pick it up and then take it to another designated area. The boys did very well and Charlie Bell, Michael Hudson and Patrick McClelland went through to the finals which took place on Saturday. Congratulations to these boys and a special thank you to Mr Hortense who guides and facilitates this group of boys every Tuesday afternoon as part of the Academic Excellence Programme. Karnarj Wong – an outback fusion fundraising gala Headspace Fremantle presents Karnarj Wongin (Talking Truth) an outback fusion fundraising gala event. While many efforts have been made to reduce the health gap between Aboriginal youth and non-Aboriginal youth, there continues to be a large disparity in all health outcomes, including mental health. From 2001 to 2010, the highest suicide rate was reported for Indigenous males aged 25 to 29 years. While traditional counselling can be helpful for many, a holistic view of mental health exists in Aboriginal culture, with an emphasis on connection to land, spirituality, ancestry, family, culture and community. Headspace Fremantle has developed an innovative program to address the disconnect between traditional service delivery and cultural appropriateness. The Wellness through Connection to Country program will provide Aboriginal youth with an opportunity to explore their identity, culture, language and country to help foster wellness. All funds raised from the gala will contribute to the program. For more information on this special evening, visit www.fremantleheadspacegala.com.au/#home.
